When Kat Royle’s boss, Roy King, is murdered, she has no choice but to take over the P.I. agency.Kick-ass tough, Kat is nobody's fool, but does she have what it takes to find Roy’s murderer and keep the agency afloat? She is about to find out.
This book has a lot going on but the story moves quickly and doesn't get muddled.
Kat Royle works with Roy at RK Investigations. At the beginning you get a clear picture of what the characters are like. Roy is not the easiest one to get along with. His only cares are his Rolex watches, cigars and his agency. He loves his daughter as well. Roy is pushing for Kat to string out her cases.
Kat is not happy with fleecing the clients and gets into an argument. Her sister is due from up north and he wants her to work. His opinion is to threaten her with firing her.
When she comes back into work on Monday, the Police are in the offices and informed her that her boss is dead.
Anne his daughter wants Kat to find who did it. She also gives her blessing for Kat to continue the business.
Sheila leaves who did the admin and books so Kat brings in Zero to take on that area.
Another murder, a hit and run, cases to be completed, a new man, a man searching for Kat and a share of a very large dog all add colour to the story.
The ending was a surprise but I am eager to get to the next book. Couldn't put it down. Got some fun bits to it.
Wonderful - think Sam Spade brought up to date and female
A great read. Much more grown up then the Witch PI series and it not only has a great plot but it has a little dark humour thrown in. Terrific characters especially the main one. Reminds me of Sam Spade with a dash of Stephanie Plum mixed with Mike Hammer. It has a distinctive noir feel to it even though it is set in the present day. She has worked at the agency for over 6 years but when her boss is murdered she doesn't look forward to look for another job. It is only when the daughter of the former boss asks her to find her father's killer that she even considers taking over. From straying spouses to money laundering and murder her clientele slows builds up. With the help of the young computer nerd (who turns his hand to anything she can throw at him) the two start to clear up the cases they have and take on new ones. But do they actually find out who killed her boss .......?
Adele Abbott Single Handedly got me thru the Pandemic
I have read all things Adele. I kid you not. The entire past half of 2020 was me reading Witch was when... books. I look forward the new ones every quarter.
They're not deep. They're not complex. But they're so damn good. She has such a strong plot, and sure she has a method and they're all the same but she has such a strong writing talent that she infuses every story with unique characters and solid relationships.
Murder on Account is funny and the story has many twists and turns. Expected, some of it, but certainly not all of it. She keeps you on your toes. I was constantly laughing and couldn't wait to read more.
If you're looking for a new take on mystery books, give Adele a try. Any of her books are a good read. You'll be just as hooked as I am. Especially you're looking for something quick and fun. I finish her books in a few days generally. Try it. You'll like it!
Longtime reader of the "Witch is When..." series, I read this new book featuring Kat Royale, P.I. Fast paced and easy to read, with snappy comebacks and plenty of snark from Kat. When the Kat's boss (a rather nasty piece of work) is murdered, Kat takes over the PI firm and investigates the murder, along with her other cases. Soon she's run off her feet between investigating, setting up the office and walking her neighbor's dog. Kat is a treasure, along with her Grandma Vi, new employee Zero and potential boyfriend. Enjoyed the nonstop action--whether in the line of duty or in her private life--Kat rarely slows down. Highly recommend to mystery readers and those who like the Jill Gooder witch p.i. books. Look forward to more of Kat from this talented author!
I usually love Adele's work, but this was a little to rushed at the end. I figured out who killed the main character early on. But it was still entertaining to read up until chapter 17. It felt rushed for some reason and no consistency. I thought I missed a chapter when the main character met up with two people she was looking for. Graham was not fleshed out and neither was the relationship of lack of one. And why was the dog named THE BRICK? Anyway ~ I gave it 3 stars.
A British ' cosy mystery or rather mini mysteries' but so much more.
I absolutely love all of Adele Abbott's books and cannot wait until the next one comes out. This has the same humour and style of writing as her 'witch ' series with an equally strong main character. I really hope this is the first of another long series of books. This is an easy read but I still couldn't put it down. If you loved her previous books you will love this.
Murder on Account is a pretty fair cozy mystery. The protagonist is an interesting, young woman who takes over the office after her P.I. boss is murdered. She decides to track down her boss's murderer after the police declare it a suicide while handling various other cases to keep the business afloat. I probably tend to hand out five-star awards too easily, but I had a good time reading this conventional mystery.
Abbot is probably best known for her Witch P.I. series. I read the entire series (45 books) almost in a row, though I swore off it when the main character got pregnant. Fortunately, the next book skipped six years ahead, avoiding all the BS of earliest childhood. Plus, the books felt too silly to occupy the time of a grown man. But by then I was rather addicted. The books include a large variety of supernatural beings as well as a supernatural world where normal humans can't go. At first, the books require a huge suspension of disbelief, but once surrendered to they move right along. All of the main characters have irritating issues that nearly make them unbearable, but that's life whether you live in a magical or normal world. Winkie the Cat is a ridiculous character, a nonmagical feline capable of almost any human ability. Abbot never attempts to explain why or how Winkie and his friends can do what they do. Cat lovers will enjoy them without asking for explanations. These books are definitely a guilty pleasure but, frankly, I'm rather impatient for the next volume.
Abbot's "Whoops" series, about an investigative reporter who rooms with supernaturals without realizing it, is a drab carry-over of the Witch P.I. books. It's hard to imagine how the two sets could have the same author. Fortunately, there are only four volumes in the set. They lack the silly charm of the larger series and I gave each one a descending rating. Not recommended.
Great book! Good, rapidly moving story with witty, humerous writing. The book follows several interesting angles but isnt confusing. Realistic characters with interesting personalities and none of the "sugary' artificial sweetness I have seen in lots of books. Will be looking fot more from this author.
This looks like a good start to a new series. I haven't read her other series, but I like this main character who finds herself running the agency when her boss is found dead. She is a good strong character with a good heart and a snarky delivery. If there are more books with her coming, I'll definitely give them a shot. 3.5 stars
I have read all the Witch PI books and thoroughly enjoy them albeit that they are a light hearted read.
This book is simply a whole different thing - it is a more serious, adult orientated (and I don't mean smutty either), very engrossing, well written, interesting book.
I am truly waiting for the next one - should there be one.
I loved this book. The characters were good, the storylines were good. You can see it as an opening book that will lead to more. Zero is my favourite character. He has lots of skills and works quickly. He's a good guy. Kat's a bit unbelievably brave in circumstances; but the whole thing hangs together well. Can't wait for the next one.
My BIG criticism is that the sequel has not been published yet (preferably, several). I thoroughly enjoyed this. It had everything; humour, suspense, colourful characters and a cracking plot. Now, Adele, it has been nearly four years since Kat and I first met. Isn't it time for a second date? I thought we were rather well suited.
I have been reading the witch series and can't wait until the next one comes out. She is an easy read and I like that the answer to the crime is in the last chapter. She also finds herself I trouble and that makes her send human.
I do believe I read this book before. And guess what?!?! I enjoyed it even more this time around. Anyway, one thing I know for sure, Ms. Adele Abbott has a way with words and p i 's.
Am really liking this new series of adele abbott’s; have enjoyed her others immensely. Kat is feisty and the pace keeps you interested, the mystery weaving around a few other side stories. I think she has another successful series in the works!
I really enjoyed this book. I have read all of this authors other books when I noticed she had changed her writing genre I knew I had to give it a try.
Believable, entertaining characters, decent albeit slightly convoluted plot lines. But a really enjoyable immersive way to escape reality for a few hours!
