The dead never stayed buried in New Orleans. After Us, The Flood is a nightmare tale set among the drowned buildings of Hurricane Katrina. Can Low Jenkins and his small band of jazz fiends and party animals survive the flood? Something is stirring in the water...
With bonus story Mama's Here. Which is stronger? A mother's love, or the hatred that burns at 3am?
I love stories set in New Orleans- it's a city I've visited more than any other, so I was eager to read this tale and surprised to discover, as mentioned in the afterword, that Dehaney had never visited NOLA because I think she nailed it. In the aftermath of a hurricane, a group of couples and friends are left to survive atop a flooded ninth ward bar. Without giving away any spoilers, what follows is a desperate struggle against not only mother nature but also horrifically unnatural things. It's a well-paced short story with just the right amount of tension and gore. The characters, especially Low Jenkins and his wife, Maybelle, are engaging, and their dialogue effectively brings them to life- you want them to make it out alive. The bonus story, "Here," is a gut-wrenching tale that masterfully blurs the lines between the psychological and the supernatural.
This book is awesome and just like any good story by any good author it drags you in and you get as soaked as the characters within its flood watered pages.
I don't know about other seasoned zombie book lovers but I always go into a zombie book expecting authentic dialogue, character development and something that grips me from the get-go. This book hits all those marks.
Pros:
Short, quick read
Main Character name: Low Jenkins (just about the best main character name you could possibly think of)
Best opening/ending line: ‘The dead never stay buried in New Orleans.’
Imagery: really fantastic and straightforward description – you feel like you’re there with the characters experiencing things as they happen. Even the actions of the main characters are authentic and feel like they could really happen.
Personal favorites: the only thing better than zombies are alligators
May just be me but I always like when someone gets hurt before the zombie apocalypse starts because you’re guaranteed that the injured party won’t make it. Tickles the morbid in me.
Cons: none of which detract from the plot
-Sometimes (not often) the characters feel two dimensional
-the dialogue tends to tell the reader what to think instead of having us determine things for ourselves - usually this would deter me from reading but somehow this book gets away with it.
-the vocabulary isn't fancy or extravagant and tends to feel repetitive
Overall this was a tight, quick, fun read and I would suggest it to other zombie lovers.
Em Dehaney delivers an impactful, nightmarish duology with After Us.
In the story “After Us, The Flood,” natural disaster and unnatural horrors combine with the human condition to create a tale of both psychological dread and active terror. The characters and sequences are vivid and compelling. The storyline has excellent concept and progression. I cannot recommend this enough. But realize the unexpected awaits you at every turn of the page.
The bonus story “Mama’s Here” is dark and haunting. The dread and suspense build to a horrifying conclusion. It is a mind-twister that may just give you nightmares.
While not extreme horror, these stories are conceptually horrifying and impactful with a touch of gore and a heaping dose of psychological horror. Both have excellent characterization and are well-paced. This duology is an excellent read for all horror fans.
Set in New Orleans, the story initially introduces us to some characters in a bar. As the night progresses, the storm raging outside leads to them being trapped on the roof, surrounded by floodwater. To make matters worse, there's something sinister and dangerous lurking in the water. Inspired by Hurricane Katrina and the abandonment of those people in the aftermath, the story follows the characters' struggle to survive when all hope of help coming seems to be lost. There's also a great bonus story with a ghostly theme.
This is not like any apocalyptic fiction I’ve read before. It’s unique and as humorous and enjoyable as it is terrifying and visceral. I love the characters who are vivid and relatable from the very first page. The story is action-packed and flows along at a rapid pace. I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished it - I read it in one day! This is the first book I’ve read by Em Dehaney and I loved it. I love her writing style and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books.
