Gia Santella is back for book #8 in Border Line, and it is another thrilling page-turner that leads this series' many fans on a trip through dangerous and intense territory. There is nothing easy about the situations in which Gia finds herself (or involves herself), both the story-lines and Gia are full-force, take no prisoners and fight to the death. Passionate about her life, her friends, and her projects, Gia is the person you want by your side and on your side. I love her strength and generosity, and now, in Border Line, readers are getting to see some softness in Gia, too. It's not a weakness. It's a softness in caring about how her actions and words affect others, not just spinning through life with her own agenda.
Part of Gia's new maturity is due to her relationship with James and their adjustment to his injuries from the last story. Living together and admitting that she loves James and wants it to be long term has resulted in Gia being more mindful of what's important to her. Of course, Gia's aunt, the Queen of Spades, helped Gia get her drinking and other bad habits under control the last time the two of them met, with healthier eating and a physically challenging regimen that Gia still adheres to. Life with James and her dog Django is going well, and they are getting ready to enter one of their favorite Mexican restaurants in the Mission area of San Francisco when they have a young girl thrust in their arms by a frantic woman pleading with them to take the girl and get her to safety. The woman claims that the ICE agents chasing them will mean death for the child if she is caught. Well, Gia has a major protective streak in her, so she and James whisk the child away in Gia's jeep, narrowly escaping the clutches of ICE.
Back at Gia's loft, seven-year-old Rosalie confirms something else that the woman with her had said, that Gia was not just some random person they chose to help. Rosalie tells of a woman in black that had given them Gia's and James' names as those to seek in saving the child. Gia knows at once that the woman in black is her Aunt Eva, the Queen of Spades. Gia feels that the only thing she can do is to keep the child at her loft and try to find the woman who fled the scene after forcing Rosalie on them. While Gia's goal is to reunite Rosalie with her family, there is a surprising easiness with which she and James (and Django) settle into having this child in their lives. And, it's quite evident that Rosalie enjoys being with them. But, Gia has to shake herself and focus on finding family with whom to give Rosalie over to.
Of course, this is Gia Santella, and nothing is ever simple. There is so much more to Rosalie's story than just avoiding ICE agents and a disadvantaged life in Guatemala. There is the deepest, darkest, most evil kind of danger that awaits Rosalie outside of Gia's and James' protection. While James is no longer a part of the police force, he is busy trying to prove the deep-seated corruption of the force, a corruption that almost killed him. So, it is up to Gia to figure out who the players are and why they so desperately are trying to grab Rosalie and make her disappear. Nothing upsets Gia more than evil being visited upon innocent people, and she must call upon her most bad-ass self to fight a force that hides itself behind the riches money can buy and takes what it wants however it needs to. Gia has been up against ruthless before, but with children's lives involved, the stakes are the highest they've ever been.
Kristi Belcamino has once again given readers a high octane tale with one of crime fiction's most fascinating characters. It is little wonder that Gia Santella has captured the minds and hearts of so many readers, with her steely determination to fight the greatest odds to right a wrong. It's always a good reading day when Gia is the story. And, like Gia, Kristi Belcamino, never shies away from tackling the difficult subjects.
Belcamino's latest in the Gia Santella series is the best one yet! Gia is growing emotionally and making wiser choices. She still has a heart of gold and will go to any lengths to help or rescue those in need, especially girls and women. She continues to stay in excellent physical shape and is as fierce as ever when the need arises. Her other extreme skills (guns and knives) also serve her well. This plot could be straight out of today's news headlines. Immigration, border detention and splitting up children from their families, coyotes, and the cartel all enter the picture. As usual, Gia doesn't go looking for trouble, but it manages to find her anyway. She has limited assistance from her lover James this time, but he does play a major part in the story nonetheless. This writing was excellent, the story flowed so smoothly, and it was so engrossing; the pages just seemed to turn themselves! A most satisfying read!
OMG! This author has done it again, providing us with an edge of your seat thriller that will keep you up way past your bedtime. No spoilers in my reviews, but here's what you need to know: Gia is a badass trouble magnet who always manages to come out on top, even in the throes of the worst situations, this time it is human trafficking. This amazing book does not have to be read in the order of the series, does just fine as a standalone if this is your introduction to Gia Santella. Be warned, however, you WILL want to go back and read the rest as the characters are certain to grow on you (in a good way). All of the Gia books are great, this one was no exception! Gia Rocks! Get this book (and all the others) now!
She's done it again. And maybe the best yet. Found myself reading faster to keep up. Had to move from my Kindle to 10 inch tablet to get more on the page. Love how it can be a standalone but has the familiar characters ...in addition to the main badass Gia, who we recognize and feel so connected to as well. Don't miss this authors other works. Ciao!
Border Line from Kristi Belcamino is the latest in the Gia Santella series. This volume not only makes a wonderful addition to the series it also marks even more growth in Gia as a person.
This story touches on some contemporary issues in society yet does so from a very personal level, not a in preachy or didactic manner. Like all large illegal operations, there is plenty of responsibility to go around for it being powerful, much of that responsibility being outside the organization.
If you've read previous Gia stories, you know she is a strong and independent woman. She has grown in every novel, usually incremental steps as she moves further in time from the events that helped harden her. This time she exhibits some major growth in areas that would naturally require time to happen. So while the change (or prospective change) is large it still falls into the realm of natural and believable. It also take her from a well-rounded but somewhat stunted character (I mean that in a good way, trauma stunts us whether permanently or temporarily) to a far more reflective person open to at least considering change. To quote a favorite movie: baby steps, baby steps.
The action, the characters, the writing, the intersecting plotlines, this novel satisfies on so many levels. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a kickass protagonist who is also a lot of fun. If you're new to the series, maybe consider starting from the beginning, but you can probably read this as a standalone, you'll just have to fill in a couple things from comments the characters make. Quite possible, I think, but if you don't like doing so, start with the first volume and work through this one by the time the next one comes out.
On the border, an immigration detention camp, a young girl and her twin brother, and a mysterious woman. And so it begins, the latest adventure of Gia Santella.
Kristi Belcamino has done it again, bringing readers another mesmerizing saga of Gia Santella and her quest for truth, justice, and the Italian way. Gia is a tough-as-nails, sexy, free spirited woman, with a heart of gold and a solid sense of loyalty. In this eighth book of the series, Gia confronts a disturbing contemporary issue in her own Gia style, with very surprising results that could dramatically change the rest of her life. Filled with intrigue, suspense, and action, this book grabs you and doesn’t let go. The author’s attention to detail and colorful characters support the riveting story line very well, making for a very compelling read.
In short, I loved reading this book and once started, it was captivating. I highly recommend starting with the first book in the series and reading the books sequentially for the best reading experience, although Belamino has written each book such that it can be read as a standalone without any loss of enjoyment. Very well done!
This is the first Gia Santella book that I have read. I did discover it is book eight in the series. What a wonderful strong female lead Krista Belcamino has created. I will certainly go back to the start of the series. I actually caught on to the story line very quickly. Gia might take action into her own hands to accomplish the impossible. She often might be accused of skirting the legality issue sometimes with the help of her partner,ex-cop James. Gia is sent Rosalie, a young girl wanted by the cartel. Rosalie, the young girl, is almost intercepted by crooked people at the drop site. Gia comes to the rescue and realizes what is going on even she is hunting for the girl’s mother who has previously died along with solving a puzzel. This book could almost be a news companion since it deals with immigration, detention camps, cartels and even rape trees. Towards the ending of the book, another intriging character, the Queen of Spades is referred to. I understand this is another series that I am looking forward to exploring. I really enjoyed the pace of action, authentic dialogue and descriptive scenes as well as the interesting characters.
The 8th installment in the Gia Santella series weaves a story that intrigues the reader and pulls them into the crime world of a Mexican cartel and exploitation of immigrants. One is pulled into Gia’s life and the evolution of her relationship with James as he continues to investigate corruption in the police force and Gia dives head first into solving the mystery behind a young girl her aunt leaves in her care. A story of exploitation, human trafficking and the take down of criminal forces. Gia never disappoints in her role as our heroine and protector of the innocent. Kristi Belcamino is a master at character development. She has a way of creating strong female characters and a posse of supporting characters that lead toward an intriguing and suspenseful plot. I am always left wanting more; to know what happens next, and where Gia’s adventures will take her.
As a resident of Salinas, where immigrants fear ICE and struggle to put food on the table picking the fields, this one hits close to home and is very timely. Children are separated from families as they cross the borders, the government making sure they are with family and not traffickers. Gia happens across a little girl she needs to protect, maybe kidnapped or running from someone. Turns out the girl's story involves very bad men and she's just one of many victims. James is still investigating the Chief and getting along fantastically in his new wheels. Gia is her usual tough girl self but she's evolving and maturing as her life requires. Her path has been long and challenging but a thrill for readers. I received an early copy, review written voluntarily.
Each and Every Book in this Series gets better and better and that is hard to do! This 8th book knocked it out of the ballpark. It was the fast paced and intense writing that I have come to expect from Belcamino, but this book I could not put down. Gia and James' relationship has grown, as has Gia's relationship with the other characters in this series. But in this book, Gia herself, has grown into a real life superwoman. The topic is a relevant one in todays complex world and was dealt with in a manner that no matter what you believe, on either side of the coin, it worked. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Thank you Kristi, for sharing your gift with us. I received this book as an ARC reader, but the review is my own opinion.
Wow, got to be one of the best in the series. Gia is as always awesome kicking ass & righting wrongs but this time she finds herself looking after a young girl who has escaped from a people smuggler. The story pulls you in right from the start & you find yourself hooked not wanting to put the book down let alone end. The depth of the characters is brilliant be it the main ones or those on the sides you really get to know each & everyone of them. Whilst it's the latest in the series it can easily be read a s a stand alone but beware once you've read one you will be hooked. Thoroughly enjoyed this book & highly recommend.
The lastest Gia Santella book does not disappoint. As usual, Gia finds herself in trouble this time in the form of a girl who has escaped Guatemala. We see a different side to Gia as she takes care of the girl buying her clothes, a backpack, etc. While Gia is trying to find the girl's mother, James is dealing with corruption in the police department. Both are in danger. The ending is not to be missed. What I love most about this book, is all of my favorite characters are there. Even though this is number 8 in the series, it can be read as a standalone. If you're a fan of Gia - you'll love it. If you're new to Gia - you'll love it.
Once again, I've enjoyed Gia's story. It has been fun to read all the books and watch her mature. She is still the tough, headstrong woman she has always been, but now she's setting priorities and understanding how her actions affect others. It's interesting to see the dynamic between Gia and James as well as the love that is growing for Rosalie. I can't wait to read the next one ... and I'm also excited to learn more about her aunt Eva, as it APPEARS that she MIGHT begin to play a larger role in Gia's life.
Amazing read as usual from Kristi! Im never disappointed! She took Gia to new levels this this time and we received a glimpse of another side of her. She is still the badass lady we love, but we see the tender, loving side of Gia. She is one lady you can count on in times of need. The problems or mysteries that fall into her lap, she just takes in stride like she always does! Murders, politicians, smugglers, child trafficking, it doesn't matter! She takes them all on & we are never disappointed!
Every Gia Santella book is a thrill ride, but "Border Line" is standout awesome. Fast paced, well written, and loaded with action, this book is impossible to put down. Gia Santella is an interesting character, and Belcamino does a great job of providing readers insight into Gia's life. This book in particular shows a maternal side as Gia battles corrupt ICE agents and human traffickers to protect a child. I highly recommend this series and hope Gia is back again soon. I requested and received an Advance Reader Copy of this book. My review is voluntarily and reflects my honest opinion.
This was my second step into Kristi Belcamino’s universe. This was my first foray into Gia’s.
Ms Belcamino stories paint pictures that take you into the world of her characters. I felt the heat of the border and saw and smelled the death that Gia witnessed. Using her adrenalin, I raced through the book. It felt nice to relax with Gia at the end. Despite herself and while continuing to fight her own demons, Gia continues to be the bad-ass savior that her neighbors and less fortunate need. Buy it, read it, you will absolutely enjoy it.
Gia is one of the multi faceted characters I have come across and I love it and her. This story shows another side to Gia and finds her balancing her kicka** ways with the emotional family/domestic/nurturer side. Human trafficking and cartels, along with illegal boarder crossings, have a strong role in this story and some of the descriptions and actions are heartbreaking. Along with the main story James is continuing his quest to bring the corrupt police down and the family group has a few not quite new, but stronger additions! What can I say, Gias’ speech to the queen made an impact 😜

This is a great read! Gia and James have been adjusting to the changes in their lives after James' injury, when Gia is thrown into a situation she never expected - looking after a young girl. Gia is determined to find out what happened to the girl's mother, and why men are trying so hard to take her.
I really enjoyed reading this one. We get both sides of the story - Gia's, and the bad guy's - which is always fun to read, and Gia is her usual kickass self!
This is the best book about Gia yet. While it appears that Gia is getting domesticated, she still kicks ass. Plenty of action. The characters continue to grow and develop nicely. With this book Kristi has taken something from the headlines and humanized it. We see the results of human trafficking and how it affects people. The relationship between Gia and James continues to grow. And I loved what the Queen of Spades does at the end of the book. Highly recommended.
I loved Border Line! This is the 8th installment in the Gia Santella series. The story was right from If you just picked this up as your first Gia story, it can be read as a stand alone. Any references to prior books are briefly explained and doesn't detract from the story. I love how the characters keep growing and evolving in each new story. I think this is the best Gia book yet! I can't wait to see where she goes from here!
I received an ARC of this book from the author, no strings attached. Here’s what I thought: WOW! Belcamino really knows how to keep her fans interested! Tough but flawed bad**s Gia is somehow singled out to help and protect a young girl. Turns out the girl was to be brokered out in a very real trafficking ring. This story is current; it’s happening, folks! I’ve read a couple of stories about human trafficking, and this one tells it well. I really loved the ending in this one; peaceful time!
The story in this book is surely being played out in real life - between illegal immigration and human trafficking. Gia is a strong female character who is still dealing with James being wheelchair bound but at the same time not treating him as an invalid. The characters seemed very realistic. Since this is the first book in the series, I'm interested in going back to learn more of the backstory of the characters.
While walking to her car a woman tells Gia to help her. She gives her a little 7 year old girl and runs. Gia sees two men coming after her and gets out of there fast. What is going on and why give the girl to her? Kristin has written another gripping story that will keep you reading all night. Her characters are strong and believable. Must read. Can't wait to read Queen of Spades.
If you love Gia you will love Border line! Gia and James are finally taking the opportunity to settle down and adjust to the changes in their lives following James injury when the little girl is handed to Gia! This book shows the good the bad and the vengeance of both Gia and James and the people that surround them.
I love the Gia books and this one is no exception! This time a young girl suddenly placed in her charge is nearly her undoing. James continues to search for evidence about the person(s) who sold him out and Eva (the Queen of Spades) pops in too.
The ending ... well, let's say I hope you are not one of those folks who reads the end first!
WOW what a book! lots of action and suspense. The characters are very complex and this storyline is very intense. Kristi Belcamino took on a subject that is very controversial and gave a good view of both sides of the picture. I love how you can feel you are in this story, actually know the characters. I especially loved the ending. A must read!!!
Gia to the recuse of a little girl.A little girl is forced on her to save. She goes to the limited with the help of her friends, lover and her sometimes seen Aunt,Queen of Spades. In a great thriller from beginning to end she fights for those who can't fight for themselves. Another great book in this series.Cant hardly wait for the next book
A nothing entertaining and action packed book, I love that His may consider adopting Rosalie. I also liked the idea that her Aunt Eva, the Queen of Spades may become.more of a feature i Gia's !ife. I really hope there will be another book in this series, there is so much more that can be told about Gia's story. Great book.
