Ted Yoder’s grandfather, Daniel Yoder, bought a parlor organ for his daughter, Louella, and was quickly silenced in the Mennonite pulpit. As a result Ted’s family grew up with little knowledge of the Mennonites. When the Yoders move back to the Mennonite community, Ted persuades his family to attend the revival service. Heading toward the church, the Yoder family is stunned by the singing. However, it was more than the singing that moves Ted to join the Sycamore Grove Church, it was also the practice of simplicity and peaceful nonresistance that drew him.
