Overall a good story but I feel like the editor slacked a little bit. I found myself stumbling over a repeated sentence and several typos.

The spooks were good and I liked the overall idea of the story, it just didn’t work as a book / novella for me. I think if you took the beats of this story, it would be a pretty solid screenplay, but the dialogue was also very one dimensional so I’m not so sure. Honestly, it could’ve taken 3 or 4 more drafts for it to have been really solid and for the characters to have been more fleshed out.
Also, I don’t know if something happened with the document that was uploaded, but the formatting was all over the place. There were numerous spots where new paragraphs would randomly start in the middle of a thought or sentence, most especially mid-dialogue. There were also so many typos and incorrect grammar usage, that it just stood out the entire time I was reading.
However, even if you overlook these issues, the narrative itself was lacking in connection to me. None of the characters stood out as special or 3-dimensional, and their personality traits were just told to us instead of shown. The only character I felt any sort of connection to was the dog, Mia (seriously she’s so precious, I love her).
I can’t say I would recommend this particular book, but the ideas were solid enough that I think I would check out a future, hopefully more polished, project.

This was a very quick read, scary scenes, a haunted house and a cute pupper.

Hannah and her dog Mia buy a house on auction unseen and as is. She is pleasantly surprised to find the home is gorgeous and huge, but it has a mysterious past of the inhabitants disappearing, like all of them.

The editing is not great and really lets this book down, but otherwise a great story with creepy imagery and story.

By pure luck, I happened to pick up a copy of The Haunting of Clandestine House by Celine Myers. Never let anyone tell you the dark gods of horror nerdery aren’t real and don’t bring us good things. Because that what Celine Myers’ book is - a good thing.
.
Celine Myers is a relatively newly published author. She was totally new to me when I picked up The Haunting of Clandestine House. (Apparently she has some notoriety for funny videos on TikTok, but I’m old, out of touch, and have little understanding of such newfangled things used by “these kids today”. Behold as I shake my fist and scowl disapprovingly!)

As you can tell from the title, it's a haunted house tale. I am a huge fan of haunted house stories. I know! I know! It’s one of the oldest, most tired, and beat-to-death subgenres in all horror fiction. And I agree: most of the stories tend to come off as old, tired, and beat-to-death. But Celine Myers’ 150 page novella is a rare treat. It was delightful, creepy fun. In spite of the genre’s limitations, Myers managed to conjure up a compelling story and genuinely freaky antagonists that kept me looking over my shoulder at home.

In the early 1900s, the Clandestine family built a large, beautiful home away from the heart of town. While they mostly kept to themselves, they weren’t strangers to the townsfolk either. One morning, their twin daughters (Eva and Edith) showed up downtown, naked, back to back, laying on their sides, and staring out unfixedly. Remaining unresponsive, they were put into a local asylum. Their parents never visited them. Meanwhile the local priest resigned and began to mutter incomprehensibly about how the universe sometimes swallows part of itself up. Then, one year later, the girls go missing from the asylum. When the local constable goes to inform parents and see if they know anything, they have also gone missing. None of them are ever seen again.

Fast forward to today. Hannah Watts is a recently unemployed journalist, who has saved her nickels and dimes and is looking to give freelance fiction writing one last try. While searching through the classifieds, she comes across a listing for an old house that has relapsed into the ownership of the town where it is located. For only $16,000 she can buy a home, move to the country, and have more than enough to renovate and start the novel she’s been dreaming about for years. Sight unseen and without research, she puts in a bid that’s accepted. A week later, she finds herself moving into Clandestine House.

What ensues are the usual haunted house tropes you know are coming. There are weird sounds and things seen out of the corner of the eye. All the local townspeople are hesitant to speak about the history of the house. Hannah slowly uncovers the house’s long history of disappearances and other unfortunate happenings. Workmen have strange experiences.

What really makes this short novella stand out is the quality of the antagonists and the way she ends the story. Straight up, the antagonist freaked me out. I am not sure what archetypal switches they were flipping in my psyche, but they worked. Also, while Myers uses a relatively tried and true device for allowing the evil which haunts Clandestine House to “come through” to our world, it is a less frequently used one. And I think she manages to use it very effectively. I’ll put it this way, Myers managed to bug me out and made me look suspiciously around my home more than a few times. To me, that’s a sign of good writing. The ending is also on point, deeply unsettling, and works really well. That’s about all I can say about it. You’re just gonna have to read it for yourself.

Grammar fascists will occasionally have things to complain about. The book could’ve been gone over an extra time for punctuation and spelling, although I didn’t find the few errors too distracting.

The Haunting of Clandestine House gets a strong thumbs up for me, mostly on the strength of the antagonists and the ending. If Myers were to write sequels, I would read them. Lastly, if any readers have sensitivity to hurt animals, this one’s a bit borderline, but it’s probably a skip for you.

I wanted to love it, I really did but it was not meant to be. I adore Celina Myers, finding her hilarious TikTok videos on accident. Then I found out she was an author and I raced to buy one of her books. This looked promising. When it arrived in the mail, I was a bit turned off by the size but I thought "great things come in small packages!"
An hour later, after dealing with SLOPPY editing and a weird printing that place dots instead of "d" in italicized text, I finished this book with disappointment. It has potential but felt like it was rushed, like "I need to turn something in for my creative writing class so I don't fail" rushed. Hopefully there will be a revision of this in the future that redeems it.

I want to start off by saying I am a huge Celina Myers fan. I love her and think she is hilarious, so I was really excited to read her work. However, this book was sadly disappointing. I think the largest issue for me was that there was a lack of suspense and there was a lot of telling rather than showing the reader what was going on. I feel like the story has lots of potential and could have been much better if it was longer. However, I am a very particular person especially when it comes to horror books.

I did find it refreshing that Hannah (the protagonist) was a no nonsense girl. She didn't take too long before she decided it was time for her to leave, like many other people in the horror genre who stay in their problem situations way too long before trying to get out.

Overall, I didn't fully enjoy this, but it wasn't terrible. I am still going to give her other books a try though.

This book is great for those who want a quick read and something that isn't too scary. It is definitely for those who are trying out or are new to the horror genre. If you are into very scary stories (like me) then I would skip this one.

I would’ve rated this book much higher if not for all the grammar mistakes. Little mistakes never bother me much but in the journal entries there were several words missing tons of letters and it made it difficult to read. Not sure what happened there exactly but the story itself was great. I love haunted house stories.

The Haunting of Clandestine House follows Hannah as she’s just recently got the highest bid on this infamous house at an auction. This house holds a dark history and it’s full of secrets. If you’re not a local then most don’t know the true nature of this house, including Hannah. Hannah starts to notice some strange occurrences since the day of her arrival and then a shocking twist is revealed and she learns EVERYTHING.

Celina Myers known as “Celina spooky boo” is huge on TikTok. I love her sleep walking videos LOL. Iykyk. Whenever I found out she was also an author, I had to check out some of her work. I’ll definitely be reading her other stories after having enjoyed this one so much!

Coming upon this book randomly I thought it was perfect for my long car ride. I quickly came to the conclusion that I made a horrible mistake when I continued reading.

I prefer face paced books over 900+ pages, but this was simply just bad.
1. Why was the interaction between Hannah and her parents so painfully awkward, so cut short and weird?

2. Why is Hannah so rude to the two women in the laundry mat? I feel like any random person would want to know more about the house they hadn’t even seen a photo of upon buying it, rather than just basically telling them off as if they were telling lies about a house she already knew was weird when she saw the mirror man! (Point 4)

3. Adam did not need to be a love interest, and the way he was introduced into one made no sense. Hannah had known him for like two days and then decides to call him because she’s scared, then he shows up, offers her to stay at his apartment for the night, (no regular person would offer up their place to a women they had only met 2 days ago) and then asks her out to lunch? (Shyly)…it was cringy and I had to stop reading.

4. Once again in reference to this being a fast paced book, I know it’s hard to fit everything into such a short amount of pages, but I feel like the haunting aspect of the house was introduced too quickly. The moment she steps into the house she sees a man in the mirror? I feel like whispering or knocking, or even footsteps around the house would have been a better first introduction.

This is my opinion unfortunately.

"Clandestine House still sits cold and empty at the end of a long, treed road, full of memories of the family who once lived there. Not many visit, and no one stays. It is said that Clandestine House sits in wait for its next victims. Clandestine House sits and waits to swallow you whole."

This was a little bit of a strange one, for a lot of reasons.

The Haunting of Clandestine House feels, for all intents and purposes, like a self-published book - ie, one that hasn't been through the editing process, one that hasn't been so much as glanced at by an editor, and was published solely by the author. What makes this weird is that this short story is published by Indigo- as in, Chapters Indigo, the booksellers. It felt like Indigo was trying really hard to dip its toes into publishing with The Haunting of Clandestine House, but clearly, they don't have the expertise to do it properly. The cover is stunning, and it's a nice, hard-bound little book - but this is one of those 'don't judge a book by its cover' situations, because the cover misleads the reader into thinking this is a proper book.

Now, that might sound mean, but when I say 'proper book,' I don't mean it in terms of actual content and writing on Celina Myers' part. The Haunting of Clandestine House is a pretty decent ghost story, and I like the author's writing style well enough, but nothing about this story feels complete or ready for publication. There are some missed editing errors (spelling, grammar, etc.), but I really actually didn't find those made much of a difference for me in reading the story. What did make a difference for me was page 107, where there is an entire paragraph of narrative text accidentally formatted to look like the journal entries above and below it. It took me a few re-reads of the page to realize what was happening, and yes, there was just a paragraph of text that was accidentally italicized when it shouldn't have been, and not a single person caught that before publication. That's the sort of thing I expect coming out of a self-published book, not one produced, distributed, and marketed by Indigo - I say marketed because the only reason I picked this book up in the first place was because The Haunting of Clandestine House was actively on a short list of promotional books that you could get for cheap for a weekend a few months ago. Indigo is really trying to push this book they've published, despite the fact it's riddled with errors.

Aside from that, if we're just looking at Myers' writing, The Haunting of Clandestine House is... fine. I call it a 'short story' rather than a 'novella' because, rather than reading like What Moves the Dead or The Salt Grows Heavy (some of my all-time favourite horror books are novellas!), The Haunting of Clandestine House feels more like the kind of required-reading, short-story analysis portion of a high school exam. This book has zero depth, and really, only acts as a baseline for a real story. The Haunting of Clandestine House feels exactly like a book proposal rather than an actual book, or Myers' planning stages for an actual book that she wound up publishing instead of actually going into detail and depth with any of the characters, scenes, or horror.

Did I completely hate The Haunting of Clandestine House? No. I think that there is some genuinely good stuff here. But she needed to dig a lot deeper, because this story is terribly basic and surface-level - which is also something an editor could have (and should have) helped with. At this point, though, I can't really blame Myers, and blame Indigo entirely for not giving a book they've published the attention that it needs. Just because you sell books, that doesn't mean you should be publishing them.

I read the Indigo exclusive hardcover edition of this and it was soooooo good!!! Beautifully made book and amazing short story. I was pulled in from the beginning to end. Without spoilers, let me tell you the ending was chef’s kiss that I gasped same for the epilogue.

If you like a bit of a mystery and a slight thriller, as well as a quick read, this is the book for you.

I really wanted to give this book more than 2.5 stars. But I just couldn't. The grammar in the book is really poor I don't mind a few mistakes but it was literally almost every page. All though the book is fairly short I felt it was quite rushed. I would like to have got to know the Characters a little bit more, And I think that the back story needed to be more detailed. Towards the end of the book I found myself getting quite annoyed with the grammar so I had knocked it down to 2 stars. However I really liked the twist at the end and I thought it was a really clever and good ending, Hence why I added half a star at the end

The story had potential but just like the last book of Celina's I read.....it flopped. You can tell this book didn't have an editor. The spelling and grammar errors, and repetitions had me cringing. This could've been a great full length novel, but alas...

Firstly, I LOVE Celina Spookyboo!! The inner narrator read this in her voice.

The story was good, it had some great "jump scares" and I absolutely couldn't put it down! BUT, I wish Celina had taken time to really open the story more.

As a short story it's great. If there had been more time building the story and a bit more spent on the back story, it would be a good novella.

Hannah buys an old house, sight unseen. She's overjoyed at her luck, until strange things start happening at the house. Hannah was warned by locals, and she didn't take heed. A decision that would change her life ... Forever.

TW: death, mention of blood, disappearances of people. Death of a dog (however it doesn't say how the dog died or describe it at all) The scenes aren't graphic, thankfully, but could be triggering for some readers

While this wasn't terrible, it wasn't good, either. It commits the mortal sin of falling into the "forgettable" range.

Hannah seems to have the thinnest of motivations, and for such a slim story, the first half is taken up with far too much set up of her wanting out, of getting the house, of traveling to the house, of walking through the house, and of describing the layout and furniture of the rooms that really play little to no role later.

When the creepy starts to happen, if feels a bit too little too late. The scenes aren't horrible, though the dialogue could be better. Again, not horrible, just flat.

The ending seemed rushed, though it wasn't a bad or unsatisfying ending.

Honestly, it's a book that feels like it could have been good, that it was almost there. But not quite.

And, just three days after finishing it, it's already fading from my memory.

Residents know the stories about Clandestine House, and that's why when it came up for sale, they stayed away. Hannah wasn't local and didn't know about the house's history. She just knew it was being sold for a steal, and now was a chance to have her own place. She did not know what was in store for her.

Quick read with little depth. Editing could have been better, but it's still a good, creepy story.

I hate the ending yet love the ending so much. You could really see this story going 1 of 2 ways. It's still such a good mystery ghost story. I just took off 1/2 a star because the grammar mistakes really take you out of it. CELINA IF YOU'RE READING THIS, PLEASE MAKE A 2ND BOOK, WE NEED A BETTER ENDING LOL (they should somehow get released).🙏👻

There’s a couple editing mishaps including the use of “grown” instead of “groan” in one instance, and a whole section of text that’s italicized when it shouldn’t be (it was clearly not part of the text the MC was reading).

But overall I really enjoyed this short read. It’s got enough spook factor to keep you turning pages, but not so scary you can’t go to sleep later. Which I appreciate. I wish it was longer so I could read more!
