Dr. Kathleen O'Connell's years in the air force had taught her a thing or two about handling arrogant top-gun pilots. But there was one hotshot flyboy who'd always gotten past her defenses. And now he was her unwelcome partner--on the most dangerous mission of her career.
Captain Tanner "Bronco" Bennett had always known how to break through her cool, professional exterior and touch the passionate, sensuous woman beneath. But they had a deadly mystery to solve--and she had to keep things strictly business.

Unsurprisingly, another winner by Catherine Mann. I'm catching up in this series, slowly but surely. All right, I'm still five years behind, but that's catching up!
Tanner "Bronco" Bennett and Dr. Kathleen O'Connell have known each other since their Air Force Academy days. Even then, attraction simmered between them. The fact that it lingers in the present wouldn't be nearly as annoying if Kathleen didn't insist on doing her doctoring duty and taking Tanner off active duty when a back injury flares up again.
Of course, if she hadn't, they've never have been assigned to an investigation together. An investigation that means Tanner can concentrate on trying to win Kathleen over. An investigation that will force Kathleen to truly become one of the team.
In true Catherine Mann fashion, she's penned another Air Force hero that I want to keep. Tanner is a wounded hero, in more than once sense of the word, which makes Kathleen his ideal heroine, despite the baggage she carries herself.
Despite the fact that it's an Intimate Moments, I was so caught up in the story between Tanner and Kathleen that I forgot to look for the suspense plot. It's there, and it's handled very well, but I think I would have enjoyed the story even without that addition.
It's also nice to get a chance to see familiar characters from earlier books. That's one of the things I like most about reading a series. I don't necessarily need them to be central to the plot, again, but I like knowing what's going on with the characters I invested in before.
And that, I think, says a lot about the quality of the book. Well done, Ms. Mann.
This story is a bit boring. I liked the plot and the suspense - but not the ending :( but the couple was a bit boring. In this book I had to work hard to find any chemistry between them (and they have a 12 years history!!!).
I'm beginning to understand that this series is more family-oriented than action-oriented. It's not a problem for me, I love family stories. But this one was a sort of middle land between family and action and it was as neither fish nor good red meat IMO.
Captain Tanner Bennett had met Kathleen O'Connor 12 years ago. She was one of his military trainers. Tanner's twin sister had been raped and killed in a car jacking incident and Kathleen was there to comfort him. They had only kissed that night but neither of them had ever forgotten it. Tanner was having back problems and his co-pilot called for a doctor to meet them when his plane landed. The doctor on duty happened to be Kathleen, who had recently been sent to the base where Tanner was stationed. They fought and he called her out and refused the ambulance waiting for him. His testiness towards Kathleen was noticed by everyone. All they seemed to do was fight. His commander called them both in to see him. Tanner was grounded until his back had time to recover and because of their fighting, he sent them on a mission together. They were sent to Edwards Air Force Base to check into a flight that had crashed. They were to discover why the plane had failed its test mission. Throwing Tanner and Kathleen together made them confront their feelings towards each other. Kathleen knew about Tanner's sister but Tanner didn't know that Kathleen had gotten married. She had been divorced for a year. Her ex, Andrew, was a pilot too. He cheated on her. It took Kathleen awhile to discover the differences between Tanner and Andrew. Andrew spoke often about the challenge of the flying and what he had done to get out of the sticky situation he encountered. Tanner spoke only of the success of the mission as a whole. He gave the team most of the credit while the success or failure was based on if they accomplished what they set out to do. They rented a car and went to the base. They read the reports and spoke to those involved. They knew something was off, they just couldn't figure out what. They were going to talk to one of the pilots the day before Christmas and they were given a route that was supposed to be a short cut. They ended up having two blown tires and the car caught on fire. Tanner had to fight to get Kathleen out because she had hit her head and knocked herself out. They walked until after dark and found an abandoned mission to spend the night in. They kissed again but Tanner couldn't feel right about sleeping with her in the church so he lied about having condoms with him. She had mumbled something about not having a nickname or having a keg party for her naming ceremony. Tanner asked her what she was talking about and she told him that she felt guilty for saying anything but she was just called 'Doc'. She hadn't been given a nickname like so many others. Tanner's nickname was 'Bronco'. Tanner thought about it and while he had to wake her up every hour, he spent some time carving a name into a fence post and giving it to her for a Christmas present. He gave her the name Athena and the fence piece when they woke up for the day on Christmas morning. They spent Christmas walking back to the base. Tanner found out that Kathleen liked to sky dive and repel mountain climbing during her spare time. They decided to break into the office of one of the officers in charge of the testing of the plane that crashed and she climbed up the building into his office and got inside through an open window. She found out that he had cleaned out his office and was gone. They got back into their new rental and the guy was in the back seat. He told them that he was leaving the country. He had saved enough money that he had been paid on the side for testing items that his bosses hadn't known about. He had turned over the reports to others where he would be considered a traitor to the country. He had a gun on Kathleen and forced Tanner to steal a plane and take them to Mexico. Tanner took the plane but Quinn hadn't actually piloted a plane in quite a while. Tanner turned on a device in the plane and had signaled to the tower as heQ was taking off, telling the base and others that the plane was being hijacked. The plane had a tracking device. Tanner put the plane on autopilot after they crossed the border and talked Quinn into letting Kathleen parachute out. Quinn told him that they both could leave. He didn't need either of them any longer and he didn't want to kill them. He could fly the plane himself and get to where he was going. Kathleen could see the revenge aggression in Tanner's eyes and didn't think he would leave the plane. She thought that he would fight Quinn and maybe even end up dead due to his ego not letting Quinn win the day. She was wrong. Tanner couldn't let Kathleen jump and end up alone in the desert. It would take hours until she was found. The plane was being tracked so Tanner didn't have to be there to see Quinn be taken into custody. He landed not too far from Kathleen. They made love and Tanner told Kathleen that he loved her. Quinn was arrested as soon as he landed the plane. Tanner was best man at a wedding a few days later. When the bride and groom left to go on their honeymoon, Tanner arranged for a keg to be brought in for a naming ceremony for Kathleen to be named Athena, warrior goddess. Kathleen was happy and finally felt like she belonged. She hadn't known how respected she was by the men she worked with. They talked later that night and Kathleen told Tanner that she loved him too. He asked her to marry him and told her that they had a love that would last. They talked about having kids and he told her that he would be happy to have a baby with her. They married and Tanner had surgery to correct his back problems. They had a little girl, Tara, a year later.
Read above for the background on the story. This was a very enjoyable read.
The plot line was good and while you knew it was headed in a general direction, it did keep surprises showing up which made you want to keep reading. The interaction between the hero and heroine did have you smiling at times because you can imagine it actually happening.
Usually the hero or heroine are stubborn in these books and it was very interesting to see the author put both of them as being stubborn in this book and it did work. However, with some issues they could compromise but at other times sparks and words flew. It was just as nice to see the hero, who was trying to be able to do it all, end up with admitting defeat and asking for help. At the same time, the heroine, while saying I told you so to the hero, also let him try and save face among her and everyone else. Each of these characters had good and bad points which made them feel human and you got to understand them which becomes important as the story goes along.
I loved how the Colonel decides to take a firm hand get thing them working together. It was very unique but then some people work that way. However, will this work against them or with them when they find out someone is out to hide things and they are getting close? Will they survive each other and the person set on killing them?
On a side note, it was good to hear what the hero and heroine from book one had been up to, which was included within the story.
This compelling romantic suspense captivate the readers from the very beginning. The author creates an unpredictable love story between two fascinating, multi-faceted, loveable main characters that will delight the readers.
Tanner Bennett and Kathleen O’Connell met twelve years ago when Tanner had just joined the Air Force. Kathleen is an Air Force doctor, who was also one of his trainers. They always had a very strong attraction toward each other. Since it was against the rules for a student and instructor to become involved, they handled their feelings by constantly picking on each other. However, they eventually broke the rules once when Tanner’s sister died. Kathleen sympathetically kissed him.
Tanner and Kathleen were not posted together until recently. Tanner is grounded at the moment with a back injury, and Kathleen is one of his doctors. They both realize they still feel the same about each other as they did twelve years ago. However, Tanner resents Kathleen for grounding him, and Kathleen resents his attitude. Thus hey begin arguing with each other again in order to cover up their real feelings.
As a punishment for their attitudes toward each other, Tanner and Kathleen are sent to Nevada to investigate a plane crash together.
This exciting page-turner will keep readers on the edge-of-their seats with non-stop action, constant danger and riveting intrigue.
His North Star is a standalone contemporary book by Catherine Mann, and is the second book in the Hometown Heroes series.
When I first started reading I had the thought that this is the perfect Harlequin romance, knowing that I had read Catherine Mann's romances around 15 years ago when I first started to get into the genre. Pretty much the exact same thought I had with the other books in the series, so this bit is going to appear in all the reviews. After making those connections, I figured out that this book is the re-release of Mann's Wingmen Warriors series, this second book was originally called Taking Cover and a quick comparison showed that not much had been changed between editions.
This is a wonderful military romance, set within an Air Force medical squadron, which features a feisty Flight Surgeon, Kathleen, and flyer Captain Tanner Bennett. Tanner, aka, Bronco, has been injured and Kathleen grounds him from missions. Obviously, this leaves Tanner feeling a little hard done by as he quickly recovers. These two have been dancing around the feelings and desires for each other, but now there is a spark that is about to ignite. There's a lot of passion in this one, both in and out of the bedroom.

His North Star is the second title in the Hometown Heroes series, and brings us Kathleen’s and Tanner’s tumultuous romance. To say that this couple fought like two lions over a meal would be an understatement. Of course, there is an underlying attraction, but two stubborn people would rather bicker than chance something more personal; both were, in their own ways, protecting themselves from heartache.
Now, they are both working at the same base. Tanner has been sidelined from flying due to an injury, and the arguing has reached new heights between them. Their commander has assigned them to work a case together at another base with unexplained accidents and failure of test results. They are to get to the bottom of it, that is, if they don’t verbally destroy each other first.
I enjoyed His North Star by Catherine Mann very much. These two could fight over whether the sun was shining. There’s a lot of emotion here, and some very dangerous situations to survive before Kathleen and Tanner find their happy ending. If you love a well-written story full of bantering, danger, and intense feelings, then you’d love this one.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or the author's team via Booksprout, and I sincerely thank them for their trust. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
While I enjoyed the story, it just didn’t grab my attention or emotions. I finished it, but I pretty much skimmed a good portion of the second half.
The last quarter of the book was the best, as the characters finally started to connect instead of argue and try to one-up the other.
The characters have known each other for 12 years since meeting at the Air Force Academy. A simmering attraction has caused them to but heads on several occasions. Orders from their Lt. Col. after one very public skirmish forces them to be joined at the hip to investigate and solve a crash in Nevada while they become better teammates. Forced proximity triggers the simmering attraction to boil into more arguments and eventually passion. Their passionate moments are behind closed doors and don’t happen until very late in the book.

This is the second book in the “Hometown Heroes Series” and this the journey to romance for Kathleen and Tanner. This is an entertaining easy read. Tanner is a military Air Force pilot and Kathleen is a military flight surgeon. Kathleen and Tanner know each from their days in the academy. Tanner has been temporarily ground from flying because of injuries. Kathleen and Tanner are very much attracted to each other but Kathleen is holding back because she was once married to a pilot. The two join forces after being forced to work together in the investigation of a crash in Nevada and the two are fighting their attraction.
Will Kathleen throw caution to the wind and give in to her attraction to Tanner, what will the two find from their investigation of the crash, is there an HEA in store Tanner and Kathleen?

Christmas on the run in the Nevada desert… Battle lines are drawn when Flight Surgeon Kathleen O’Connell temporarily grounds Captain Tanner “Bronco” Bennett from flying until after the holidays. But then by-the-rules Kathleen has always had a way of getting under his skin. Now, thanks to his ground duty assignment to investigate a crash with her in Nevada, Kathleen finds herself on the run in the desert with the annoying – charismatic – pilot. Can she throw out the rule book and trust this hometown hero when he declares she’s his north star?
I really enjoy this author and this book was no exception. It had just the right amount of intrigue, danger, and romance. Who can resist a man in uniform? Especially one who saves your life!
Thank you to #booksprout for a copy of this book in return for my honest review.

Kathleen and Tanner have sparks flying whenever they come across each other. This started 12 years ago when their paths first crossed. Kathleen is a flight surgeon and when Tanner has a recurring issue with his back, a full blown argument takes place. Sent to investigate a crash together in an effort to work through their differences, I felt this would either make or break them. Both had issues from their personal lives which held them back from their attraction to each other. A car accident, a walk across the desert and jumping out of planes all keep the story interesting. Tanner comes across as a real caring happy chappy until he is pushed and at the same time Kathleen, who is a stickler for rules, closes in on herself for self-preservation. The story kept me hooked until the end. A great love story but with the added bonus of a suspense chucked in.

Tanner worries Kathleen is going to stop him from getting his promotion because of all her by the book rules when it comes to caring for his back injuries. In a man’s world she is a lone wolf determined to conquer things on her own, afraid to be thought of as less competent due to her sex and pushed aside. Due to their public bickering they are forced to work together on an investigation but someone will do whatever it takes to keep them from solving the mystery. I can understand her frustration with not having a call sign like the others but she does back out of off duty fun. Tanner has a savior complex after losing his sister and I wondered if his relationship with Kathleen would be the same but she can repel buildings, parachute out of planes, and defend herself. I loved the sweet ending.
Tanner and Kathleen’s story has a bit of angst, quite a bit of action and a good bit of danger and intrigue. They are both military personnel, he a pilot, she a doctor. They met years ago, shared a kiss that neither could forget, then didn’t really connect again until both are stationed at the same base. When their most recent encounter ends in an argument, the Commander of the base gives them a joint task. That task or investigation leads them into a few difficult and unexpected situations where they are forced to let their guards down and rely on each other. The attraction they felt years ago is back in full force, but will they get a chance to see if it could turn into more?.

His North Star (Hometown Heroes Book 2) is a re-released book by Catherine Mann. I didn’t realize this until I had downloaded the book. I read this story several years ago under the title of Taking Cover. This brings the reader Kathleen’s and Tanner’s rocky road to romance. Together they are investigating a crash. They spend a good deal of time bickering and disagreeing before they admit to the attraction that they have to each other.
A romance with a big dose of mystery, this is an exciting story. Catherine Mann can write a book with humor tied to characters with deep emotions. These two have a longs way to go in the relationship building but they managed to do so successfully. I enjoyed the story the second time around as much as I did the first time I read it.
Enjoyed this romance with military pilot Tanner and military doctor Kathleen. They shared a kiss while both were back at the academy and they have never forgotten that kiss. Years later they are stationed together and they can not get along because Kathleen has always felt alone and after her divorce what little confidence she had has been shot. They end up having to work together to solve the mystery of a plane crash and the heat goes up between them as they get involved in the suspense and danger surrounding the crash.

They end up on a short cut that ends with two blow tires. All on Christmas eve and Tanner carries Kathleen from the car before bowing up. Now they are walking back to a very dessert location and spend the night in a old church. When they get back, they realize that it may be what someone wants. How will they find the person and how will they go on with their feelings for each other.

This book can be read as a standalone, but there are references to characters and events in the first book. Our heroine is a flight surgeon and must ground our pilot hero in order to give his back time to heal. Due to their altercation on the field, the commanding officer decides to put them together to investigate an accident in the New Mexico desert. It will either bring them to an understanding or they will forever be at odds. The back and forth between these two is entertaining as are the insights they have into why they are the way they are. Read this engaging story to see if they find their happily ever after.

An interesting read i did have trouble trying to find the chemistry between Katherleen and Tanner considering it had been 12 years and some of it away from each other. I really enjoyed the last chapter and the epilogue I thought it suited the characters well. The drama kept my interest throughout the book. Reading in detail Greyson’s and Lori’s wedding was a great addition although the other parts with Grayson for me weren't clear as per the first book he was based in Washington not deployed. The novel could be read as a standalone.

This was Tanner and Kathleen’s story. Kathleen and Tanner have always verbally sparred with each other and learning of a kiss between them years ago that they don't acknowledge makes the way they are with each other make more sense. Now they are stuck together investigating a crash and the close proximity causes mayhem having you want to shake some sense into them as their verbal communication is hopeless! I love how there was the mix of romance and danger as they work together learning both are so much more than a guy with an ego and a heartless Doc.

Kathleen and Tanner have crossed paths before but now they are teamed up to research a crash site in Nevada. Can they handle being so close when feelings are rekindling? Some mystery slides in amid their passion returning, forcing them to redirect their investigations. Have things changed enough to allow them to change their direction or will it all be over soon. Can they make it past the obstacles? Great characters and a storyline that kept the pages turning. Great ending.

I really like this book. Tanner and Kathleen had been at odds for twelve years, since being at the academy together. They are both stubborn and have baggage that they need to work through. When they are assigned a case that they have to work together, their chemistry cannot be hidden any longer. I love how they worked together and how they were able to work through their issues (individually and together) so they can see a future with each other.

This is the second book in the Hometown Heroes series. I LOVED this book. It is a standalone book even though characters from the first book make appearances.
