One of Christianity's most beloved pastors walks readers through the book of Psalms, helping them to live its comfort and promises in the face of life's relentless daily grind. We all have those days--when little problems become crises, when doubt begins to overwhelm belief, when exhaustion hits and happiness escapes. And the book of Psalms offers words of strength and comfort for those troublesome times. In this remarkably down-to-earth study of selections from Psalms, one of Christianity's foremost pastors and authors explores such pressing themes as fear of the unknown, discouragement and worry, how to handle difficult people and what to do when God is silent. Combining his trademark illustrations and insights with favorite passages from this beloved Bible book, Charles Swindoll offers up a work that will help readers live the Psalms as never before. Here is practical inspiration and victorious affirmation to get anyone through life's daily grind. Drawn from previous best-selling works, adapted for the 21st-century reader
Charles Swindoll has devoted over four decades to two passions: an unwavering commitment to the practical communication and application of God's Word, and an untiring devotion to seeing lives transformed by God's grace. Chuck graduated magna cum laude from Dallas Theological Seminary and has since been honored with four doctorates. For his teaching on Insight for Living, he has received the Program of the Year award and the Hall of Fame award from the National Religious Broadcasters as well as multiple book awards.
It wasn't bad but didn't resonate with me as much as Warren Wiersbe's "Prayer, Praise, and Promises: A Daily Walk Through the Psalms" which I read two years in a row as a morning devotional. I also didn't realize this book only went through half of the year!
An excellent study of select Psalms. Chuck has a unique way of bringing the scriptures alive and relevant to our every day lives. This is a book I will refer back to when I want to be reminded of the depths and beauty of God’s Word in the Psalms.
Praise the LORD... Beautiful.... Prayer Provoking.... Provoking Meditation and Reflection on the completeness of Gods love for each of us. Praise the Lord.
Loved this book by "Grandpa Chuck" as I refer to him. Not only is this book encouraging, I love his insights and explanations into the Psalms he covers. My favorite part of the book is at the end of each day's devotional. He ends each one with a "Making it Strong in Your Soul" challenge or activity that builds upon what was learned in the study. His studies always produce spiritual growth - I would highly recommend!
I wanted to spend some time in the Psalms and came across this book. The book covers 25 different Psalms and focuses on different challenges of life, i.e., compromise, discouragement, fear, mistreatment, etc. It is set up like a devotional: 26 weeks with 5 days of study each week. The daily reading isn't very long. I liked this book so much by Swindoll that I want to read Living the Proverbs. I see myself revisiting different weeks of the book (and Psalms) in the future as needed.
The subtitle to this book is 'Encouragement for the Daily Grind' and that is exactly what Swindoll achieves here through his deft exegesis of numerous Psalms. He expounds the text, addressing the linguistic and historical background to each of the psalms he selected. Moreover, he provide us with practical applications, what the text means today, how we can use its wisdom to live everyday.
Chuck Swindoll has always been one of my favorite speakers, writers, and spiritual leaders. Living the Psalms has been such an encouragement to me especially during this difficult time with the Covid virus, political unrest, and the absolute destruction of our moral and Christian values.
Chuck Swindoll writes as if you are having a conversation over coffee. His Living Insights Commentaries are the most approachable I've read (and I have most). Living the Psalms is no exception. It is both warm and insightful.
There are three living theological authors that don't sway from the scriptures: John MacArthur, John Piper, and Chuck Swindoll.
Pastor Swindoll did a masterful job walking me through the Psalms in a easy to read, easy to understand manner. His style of writing is warm and witty. I truly enjoyed this book.
One of the best devotional Bible Studies I have read. Thematic, yet expository teaching with such insightful and helpful examples and questions. The way he lands the Psalms in everyday life is so helpful to the Christian seeking a language for their struggles and hopes, and leading them to Jesus in order to live each day with renewed hope. Thank you Chuck Swindoll!
