Wilde Ways #3

Before Ben

Rate this book
Enemies make the best lovers.

It was a one night stand with her worst enemy. Ben Wilde was cocky, charming, and sexy as the best sin. He was also Courtney McKenna’s weakness. Every single inch of his muscled perfection was trouble and temptation. They’d sparred in the courtroom more times than she could count, and the tension between them had always been red-hot. One night should have been all she needed to get the guy out of her head and her dreams. Only…it wasn’t.

Because before Ben, life was easy. Life after Ben? Hot. Dark. And dangerous.

Courtney tries to fight her scorching desire for Ben even as they plan to face-off in court once again. Even as they fight for power. But once you cross some lines, there is no going back. And Ben doesn’t plan to let her go anywhere.

He’s had a taste, but Ben wants a whole lot more.

Ben Wilde has never believed that opposites attract, but there is something about button-downed, prim and proper Courtney that has always driven him wild. And when he gets her in his bed, the attraction he feels for her changes into a sensual obsession. Sure, they can be enemies in the courtroom, but in the bedroom, they are meant to be something else entirely.

Be careful what you want…

Someone out there doesn’t want Ben to have Courtney. Someone who will do anything to stop their attraction. But that predator in the dark is messing with the wrong man. When it comes to Courtney’s safety, Ben will break every rule in the book. He will stop pretending to be nice and show the world just how wicked and dangerous he can truly be. Because Courtney is his, and Ben will play dirty, he’ll play rough, and he will destroy anyone who threatens her.

Author's BEFORE BEN is a complete, stand-alone novel (no cliffhangers). It features one cocky but charming hero who will be brought to his knees, one heroine who will fight fiercely for exactly what she wants, and plenty of dark danger and twists thrown in for fun. Like a sexy story with chills and thrills? This is for you.

Oh my gawd! This author is totally killing it with this series! And holy geez! This one is just as good if not better than the previous books! After all, when they’re all freaking amazing, it’s hard to determine which is the best.

Ben and Courtney have known each other since their first year of law school. And from pretty much the first moment, their relationship has been that of enemies. As fierce competitors, they waged battle in the classroom and now they continue to do so in the courtroom. Even so, Ben has been relentless in his pursuit of her. Courtney, despite her attraction to him, has had no issue of turning him down each of the numerous times he’s propositioned her. Until a “swipe right” turns into a no show and Ben is in the right place at the right time.

description

Ben has been watching Courtney for years. He can recall every single thing about the first moment he saw her. Her fierce determination to be the best only called forth his own need to be the best man he could be. She isn’t aware that their arguments and banter only makes him want her more. And he can’t count how many times he’s asked her out only to be shot down. But he will never stop trying. When he finally gets an in, he’s taking it and he’s not letting go.

”A rough, possessive edge had entered his voice. Her gaze flew to him just as he bent down and picked up – yep, her panties.
His fingers curled around them. “I get that you think I’m a playboy.”

“Um, aren’t you?”

His head tilted back. “Let’s be very clear. I am not playing with you.”

The heartbeat that had just calmed down suddenly sped right back up. “Then what are you doing?”

“Wanting you more than I’ve ever wanted another woman.”

description

This book was freaking amazing! I absolutely LOVED the way Ben was one hundred percent determined to keep Courtney and when the need arose, to protect her. He might not be the intense brother, as he has always been laid back, fun and playful, but when he learns someone is stalking her, his protective instincts rise up and he’s more than capable and willing to do what is necessary to keep her safe.

”Like the rest of the world, he saw what Ben wanted him to see. The image he presented to the world.

Good guy, my a$$.

He could fight dirty. He could play hard. He could be the sonofab!tch you never wanted to face in the dark.”

I’m usually all about the hero, but with this series, I’ve found that the prefect heroine has become an expectation and Courtney more than met mine. She’s feisty and independent, fierce but sweet and caring, and more than capable of kicking tail but never harsh with a tough exterior.

I can’t gush enough about how much I loved this couple as both individuals and as a couple. Their past was rife with the enemies vibe, but beneath it was an attraction that when given a chance flamed into a consuming fire. The danger and conflict they face served to highlight their own strengths and weaknesses and gives the reader the opportunity to see more of what makes each of them click alone and together. And oh my gosh…the twists are everywhere and you will NEVER guess as to how this all plays out.

I can’t recommend this book or this series enough!

4.5 FAB STARS

Cynthia Eden is one of my go to authors, and she didn’t disappoint me with this book. I found myself happily absorbed from the get go – Ben in particular had me eager to read more. He seriously rocked – a veneer of charm, good looks and his dimples give people the impression he is a super easy-going guy, but boy are they are wrong, this is one hot guy who is marvellously protective and willing to do anything for those he cares about. I loved how he never doubted anything Courtney said – unlike the cops and her neighbour. His unwavering belief in her and his desire for her were hot.

Ben loves battling wits with Courtney in court, but he also wants her fiercely, he has from the very first moment he saw her at law school. In contrast, Courtney has spent years hiding her crush and believing Ben was never serious any time he asked her out.

Courtney has been on her own for a long time, after her mother died and her dad ditched her in the welcoming arms of the foster care system, and since then she has made her way on her own, becoming a kickass divorce attorney. She’s kept herself away from any serious relationships, keeping things superficial to protect herself. Yet one night with Ben and the more time she spends with him, she finds that he has wormed himself under her skin and into her heart.

Simon’s teasing during his, Ben’s and Courtney’s little B & E had me smiling. This was a fun read that I devoured pretty fast, thank goodness for a super quiet work shift, and a fab boss who doesn’t mind me doing my own thing when no one is around.

It’s been a while I picked up a Cynthia Eden book to read/re-read that combined with the characters in this book made this a fab read. This is definitely going in my re-read pile, one buy, I don’t regret.

4.5 - "You were more than worth the wait..." Stars!

Ben Wilde has had several roles in the previous books in this series, best-friend and brother namely. In Before Ben he becomes bad-ass boyfriend.

Courtney McKenna has always been the one woman that doesn't fall charms. Over the years their rivalry in the courtroom has been fierce, and a refusal to date him outside of it firm, mainly because she thinks his requests are in jest, and that he is just doing it to make a fool of her. Little does she know that Ben has been looking out for her behind her back since their college days.

Her enemy.
Her protector.
Her friend.
Her lover.
And… the man she very much feared…
She might love.

What starts out as a suspected random attempt to take her purse in a deserted parking garage quickly morphs into a living nightmare for Courtney, with an unknown threat stalking her, breaking into her apartment, and trying to capture her Courtney doesn’t know where to turn, but Ben having a hand in staving off the initial attacker immediately goes into uber protective alpha mode as soon as he sees that it may not have been as random as was initially thought.

Everywhere she turned, it seemed like she was facing some kind of lie or betrayal…

Ben having a brother who is a security expect doesn’t hurt, and soon Courtney is being watched and protected morning, noon and night. But the threat level increases and as the players are discovered the crazier the roller-coaster of a story-line gets.

"What is it with you Wilde boys..?"

The last 25% of this book really kept me on my toes with the twists and turns coming almost every other paragraph, but that is what I have come to expect from this author especially when she’s on form and writing Romantic Suspense is definitely one of her strongest genres. Three notable new characters in this one as well; Layla Lopez (not new, but a regular secondary character and someone who I think the author needs to give a story too), Cole Vincent (all sorts of intriguing and definitely looking to redeem himself), & Kendrick Shaw a lawyer who defends the bad-guys, as soon as he was introduced I wanted to know more about him.

So as you can tell this series definitely has more to come with a lot of secondary characters looking like it might be worth being bought to the fore for their own stories, and with Bodyguard; Julia Slate due to have her story told next in; The Heart You Break I can see the Wilde Ways series running for a little while longer yet!

The third book in the Wilde Ways series by Cynthia Eden. Ben Wilde and Courtney McKenna fight on separate sides of the courtroom. They have known each other since law school and rub each other the wrong way. But Ben and Courtney have a strong attraction to one another. One night Courtney succumbs to Ben's advances. When it is discovered that Courtney has a predator after her and doesn't like Ben's entry into Courtney's life, Ben gets Wilde Securites involved.

A good addition to the series.

Well this author certainly knows how to get her readers attention and the first line of this book was jaw dropping. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from Ben as he's a character who has featured strongly in this series and yet in many ways he was a dichotomy. On the one hand he's privileged, wealthy , appears fun loving and perhaps a bit of a player. Then I'm forced to remember that he's a loyal friend and brother and lets not forget that he's very much an upstanding lawyer.
So I really didn't expect the strong feelings that Ben has nurtured for Courtney. They met at college but never truly connected as friends. Not exactly enemies but certainly adversaries when it comes to facing off in a courtroom. Courtney has no place in her organised life for Ben or anyone really no matter how cute Ben's dimples might be ! Still she cannot deny that she needs help when its clear she has a stalker and luckily Ben knows exactly where to go for professional advice !
I went into this not exactly sure if Ben would wow me and sadly I have to confess it was a new character introduced that had me sitting up and taking notice. Ben and Courtney seem to have danced around each other since they first met and I actually can understand Ben shying away as clearly he wasn't mature enough to handle his strong attraction and feelings. Courtney has her own misgivings to work through and I particularly liked that this story took a very unexpected turn. This couple are passionate and frankly struggle to keep their hands off each other so if you are looking for a steamy romance with a sting in the tail this suspense driven story certainly fits the bill.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested
and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I love this series! Ben and Courtney were great to watch. This book had lots of twists and turns. It kept me guessing right until the end. It was pretty complex. Ben and Courtney’s love story was so fun to watch evolve and get their HEA. I loved the epilogue.

3 stars for the mystery. But the romance and the characters made me wonder if this series was really written by Cynthia Eden. 🤔 This is the first series of this author that i am totally disappointed in. I keep expecting that the next book would get better. But.... sigh! So let down by this book too!
The first two books H's made me grind my teeth for their dickish, arrogant and whorish behaviors. Ben follows the same mold. Gosh i did not expect this from the H's of Cynthia Eden's books! Cynthia Eden!!!! 😣

"You were more than worth the wait..." THE BIGGEST LIE EVER!!!
He was with every pretty girl in the college except for the h. I just can't understand this about these H's in this series. They desperately want the h's in their own stories. Yet instead of trying their best to be with them, they go and F*** every other woman they can get. Then they go and say they were waiting for the h all their lives. WHAT THE HELL???
Then something happens and they are suddenly all "you are mine to take care of"! Just bulldozing their will over the h's wishes.😡
Don't ask me about the h! Same as the others. She's crushing on him all the while and acting as if the H is the enemy. The H is a manwhore and the h doesn't have one night stands. She has not had any good sex untill she has sex with the H. Then its the best sex of her life! 🙄
It seems like Eric, Simon and Ben are all one character with 3 names. And the same with the h's. I just can't tolerate any of the characters in this series. The emotional stuff they say to the h's seem so fake and false, especially when they acted just the opposite all the time untill then. I like to emotionally connect with my book characters and fall in love with them. I couldn't connect emotionally with the characters of this series.
The only saving grace is the mystery. Just a little bit interesting. So i gave 3 stars. Because this is Cynthia Eden and i'm hoping that i'll get back to reading her engrossing books and falling in love with the amazing men and women like in all her other series that she's ever written. Please Ms. Eden, i'm waiting to read your best characters again.
I don't know how everyone's giving this series 5stars. I know Cynthia Eden is an amazing author. All her previous books attest to this fact. But this series... Is it only me???

Another one 🎶

I kept reading more books from this series and again I liked.
Smooth, suspense, action, and not separation or drama between the leads. Communication and chemistry.
Very easy books to read.

I found a little weird the character of Ben when I read about him in the first book and seems like he built another personality but far I don't have more complains.

Definitely enjoyed this one more than Guarding Gwen. Ben was swoon worthy the way he protected Courtney. I loved how he always wanted her from the beginning but she could never see that.

“I noticed everything when we were at Emory.” Everything about you.

“And for what it’s worth, I liked your damn bike with the white basket and that crazy-ass bell. I’d smile every single time when you came rolling through campus ringing the bell at everyone so they’d get out of your way. I thought you were cute as hell.”

“You’re on my radar, and you have been for years. You’re important. You’re smart. You’re beautiful. You’re kind. When I see you, you make my fucking day better.”

The ending was definitely a surprise. Wondering if that will come into play later? Looking forward to finding out...

I was afraid this book might be a lot of back and forth bickering but it wasn't. Once Ben and Courtney had their first night together it was a cute ride as Ben worked hard to protect Courtney.

Quotes & Faves:

“You’re on my radar, and you have been for years. You’re important. You’re smart. You’re beautiful. You’re kind. When I see you, you make my fucking day better.”

“They wouldn’t let me back.” She staggered to a stop near him. But she didn’t touch him. “They said only family could go back, and I’m not family.”

He grabbed her. Pulled her against him. And took her mouth with his.

His mouth lifted. “I don’t feel badly for you. I want you. More than I’ve wanted anyone else. And I will never want another woman this way. Because there is only one Courtney McKenna.” A half-smile played at his lips as he looked down at her. “There’s only one you.”

“I need you in my life, Courtney, because you’ve been a fucking bright spot for me for a very, very long time. I need you because you make the days better. Because you push me to be a better man. I need you because you are the best lover I’ve ever had, and truth be told, now that I’ve had a taste of you, you’re the only lover that I can ever imagine having. I want you. Only you. I need you. You’re the one, Courtney.”

Yes. I love you.” It felt good to say the words. To have them out there. “And no, I’m not waiting for you to say the words back to me. I might have loved you since the first day when you walked into my law class or when I saw you driving hell fast across campus ringing that little bell on your bike—”

Review posted on Got Fiction?

“You ever had a hate fuck?”

Well, that’s the best first line of a book. Wow. Ben is a huge flirt. He hits on Courtney all the time, but she never takes him seriously. He’s the cute guy who has an easy smile for everyone. She’s never really seen him as anything but flirty, even when they’re battling in the courtroom. He’s been hitting on her since law school, and nothing stops him.

But when her date doesn’t show up, Ben whispers naughty things to her. Courtney isn’t having it though. She leaves. Luckily Ben sees she’s forgotten something and chases after her. As he pops out of the bar, he sees Courtney being attacked.

They wind up spending the night together, and as soon as Ben leaves, the weird attacks against Courtney escalate. If you haven’t read the previous books (it’s totally okay! you’ll be fine!), Ben’s older brother Eric owns Wilde Security and is the best on the East Coast. Ben isn’t taking anything for granted where Courtney is concerned, and takes her straight to Wilde Security.

But somehow the attacker is able to track her and follow her no matter where she goes. Ben sticks to her like glue, and Courtney sees a whole different side to the guy she’s always thought of as easy going and flirty. Ben is very serious where Courtney is concerned. And Courtney is beginning to get serious about Ben.

The mystery in this book is definitely not something I saw coming, and I really enjoyed seeing Ben and Courtney stop fighting their chemistry. I liked seeing Courtney open herself up to a relationship, and I liked seeing previous characters from the other books. But we were introduced to a new character who I really like! I hope to see more on him.

Before Ben can be read as a standalone, as can all 3 books, so don’t worry if you haven’t read it. You won’t be confused. I’m really looking forward to not only the next book, but hopefully more on that ending!

I have a serious obsession with this series, and I am not ashamed to admit it. This is the perfect stay up late at night binge reading until the perfectly swoon-worthy ending that leaves a big smile on your face afterward cause it is just so good in all the possible ways series...

The books in the series are stand-alone stories, that gets wrapped up within the covers yet the characters do walkthroughs in the other books, and you get to know them even better or just visit with them for a minute. Ben has been in the stories since the book one, so his cocky, sure-of-himself ways and attitude was well known before I immersed myself into the book. The beauty of the writing is that while Ben is at times over the top alpha - with his protective mind and overly defensive attitude towards his loved ones - he never crosses the line from alpha to ass jerk, he has a heart of gold, he truly cares, and he is an honest, loving, affectionate, and lovable guy. I loved him in Protecting Piper, and that feeling was just validated in Before Ben.

And Courtney McKenna is the one - and the only - woman that can match Ben, and bring him to his knees. One of my favorite things about this series is the strong, successful, capable, female leads and secondary characters that are presented in the stories. I admire them, I love them, I cheer for the success they accomplish, and I want just all the best for them because they have worked hard to get where they are and they deserve all the happiness in the world.

The suspense is dark, it is deadly, it is dangerous, twisted, and personal. The case was so well presented that it managed to surprise me with some turns of events.

That dark, chilling danger is well balanced with quick, smart banter, humor in unexpected moments that had me cackling, and the ardent romance that burned so hot, so fierce, and so earnest, it floored me.

Overall Opinion:
You would think the two leads, who just so happen to be lawyers, romance will lean more towards the mature side of love but page after page I felt like I was reading about a immature and over the top story mostly containing Ben having a pissing match against every male that had ever had an encounter with Courtney. It was such a turn off with the constant jealousy, fast paced romance, and the way too eventful storyline. I really wanted to like this but it wasn't cutting it for me.

Ben Wilde is Courtney McKenna’s weakness, but surely a one night would get him out of her head and her dreams. There is something about Courtney that drives Ben wild and after he finally gets her in his bed, the attraction he feels for changes into a sensual obsession. They might may fight for power but there is no going back and Ben doesn’t plan on letting her go anywhere.

Before Ben is romance that is well worth waiting for. Ben and Courtney have some sizzling chemistry and fiery romance that has sparks flying in every direction with the passion burning hotter and hotter with every clash of wills as Courtney fights their attraction with everything she has while dueling with him in court. Lots of emotions flow from the pages as readers get to know these strong characters that are full of dynamite and passion as is their relationship.

This fiery romance and simmering plot is fast paced and keeps suspense and excitement building throughout as an unknown foe stalks Courtney and Ben will have to use resource available to him to keep her safe. The characters are easily connected to and make it easy for readers to become completely caught up in what’s happening while unexpected twists keeps readers glued to the pages while at least on of those twists has readers shouting WHAT?! in amazement during this exhilarating and passionate read.

There is just something about these Wilde men, Lol. Ben Wilde is so intense in this book with his heroine, Courtney, They have known each other through college and law school and have been adversaries in court. However, the sizzling attraction that has been simmering all these years, finally comes to a boil and Courtney decides to do something about it, even with her reservations. She believes him to be a playboy and he believes that she hates him. Lol. Once Ben finally has a taste of Courtney, he is not letting her go. In the midst of their in-depth attraction, Courtney's life is threatened and that's when Ben becomes enraged with protecting and standing between whoever wants to hurt his Court (his nickname for her). Filled with action, suspense, alpha-maleness, hot sex and a fierce heroine is a recipe for another HEA within Ms. Eden's world. I truly enjoyed this one and am very happy Ben got his story. He totally rocked it!
Kudos for the the little extra snippet at the end of Piper and Eric with a special surprise! 4.5 stars

And Before Ben wasn't any different. I fell in love with Ben from Protecting Piper and knew I couldn't wait to read his story and see who would make him fall to his charming knees. Courtney was perfection too! Sweet, soft, kind and fierce she was Ben's perfect match in and out of the courtroom. What a read!

This was a good read. I enjoyed the story and the plot, and it was super intense. The relationship between Courtney and Ben was excellent, and I liked seeing it grow and develop while they we’re dealing with what was happening.
The pacing was good, and the story moved quickly. The writing style is easy to follow, and I liked the way that the plot developed and answers unfolded.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 30, 2019

4.25 Stars. I was excepting a hate to love sappy love story with a side of suspense. This book was so much more. It has action suspense, a mystery surrounding Courtney’s past, and a love story all wrapped up in one compelling book. The plot has an original twist to it that keeps the reader guessing. I wasn’t expecting the path it took, which was refreshing. Ben and Courtney make a great team. Add in Ben’s brother and his security team, which takes this story to another level.

Ok so just one tweet: https://twitter.com/Limecello/status/...

but I was so sad because I really enjoyed Protecting Piper, and loved Ben, and I ADORE "smitten hero" romances- and Ben was CLEARLY smitten ...

But gosh. Like in PP - I felt Piper was a bit TSTL sometimes, running to places all "I NEED TO BE THERE" - like I get wanting to be in control of your life but bitch YOU'RE AN AMATEUR AND THERE ARE BODIES DROPPING LEFT AND RIGHT HERE.

HERE... supposedly Ben and Courtney are TEH MOST BRILLZ but like ... meh.
And Ben being all "NO IT'S ME MUST BE ME." Like - my dude. I get it - you need your own reassurance but also like ... you're NOT an agent? Which they tell you? So it was nice Julia was on the case/to protect Courtney ...
>.> I can't remember why I was so annoyed with all of this but I am <.<
there was a lot of it ...

... Which also OH MY GOD I like totally turned off my brain on the ethical implications of SLEEPING WITH OPPOSING COUNSEL DURING AN ACTIVE CASE.
There HAVE to be professional responsibility rules against that ... [actually pretty sure there are and I just blocked them from my brain.]

Oh! At the beginning when shit is happening and Courtney is all "well whatever" - bitch. You're a lawyer - CALL THE COPS. YOU KNOW THIS SHIT ISN'T RANDOM.

And then Ben's all "I'M NOT A GOOD GUY. AM DARK AND SHIT" ... bro get over yourself.

I'm definitely going to be re-reading Piper but ... I dunno about Ben.

I REALLY want to know more about Courtney's ... family though. I wish there was more there. :P
AND to her credit - major kudos and 100s on her kicking out that bitch's kneecaps. Supposedly it just takes 15 pounds of pressure from the side! So.
