An industrial hell. The foulest and most decrepit slum on Parsephon. A nest of human misery, where hope is word long forgotten, and the dead are carted away every day. It is the worst pit in the Confederation’s great industrial machine known as the Iron Belt.
Among the millions born into misery, poverty, and despair under the dark and smoky haze that covers the planet, Andromeda Lafarge is unique. One lost soul among billions, she is tough, relentless, determined to get out, to escape, to blaze her own trail, and to make a name for herself across the stars.
Andi will break the chains binding her to a life of destitution, leave the Gut and Parsephon behind forever, and plunge into the dark and deadly worlds of the lost empire, prospecting for imperial artifacts, the bits and pieces of old tech that can make her rich. She will find new friends—and enemies—on the frontier, and she will blaze a trail from the filthy, polluted Iron Belt world of her birth to the dead and haunted imperial planets of the Badlands.
She will fight, endure hardships unimaginable, save comrades…and lose some, too. She will struggle to amass wealth, to do whatever is necessary to ensure she will never again be helpless, and she will bring back the technology of the ancients, scraps of mankind’s lost legacy, to do it.
She will create a name for herself among the rough and tumble adventurers who ply the rogue trade in ancient tech. For some, she will become one to emulate, to follow. To others, her name will become the foulest of curses. She will make her way, blade and pistol in hand, from one dead and ancient world to another.
She will become the scourge of the Badlands.

A new star rises in the Confederation. From the depths of the worst hell on any Confederation planet, Andromeda rises.
She was born and raised in the Gut. The worst slum in the Rim produced a bright and capable thief. Nimble and intelligent, Andromeda Lafarge survived on scraps and leavings. Life was tough, but she got by, until she met the Marine. A bond was formed and the Marine taught her how to more than survive.
This is the backstory of Andi Lafarge, and a brilliant addition to the Blood on the Stars series. Book 1 of the Andromeda Chronicles is an amazing tale with a cast of characters guaranteed to fill many hours with excitement and pleasure, mixed with a few tears. Jay Allen has brought us a new thriller to his long list of successful works. If you liked the Crimson Worlds series, or the Far Stars adventures, you're guaranteed to love this read. Truly amazing!
I've only read the first book of the Blood on the Stars series and this character has yet to make an appearance so I suppose reading this book first will give me a more complete and linear view of how this character develops. I enjoyed all of the characters in the story although they seemed to come and go fairly quickly. I realize this is just a bit of a background however for a character that I haven't yet met in the larger series. All in all the story was interesting and a good lead-up for what is to come. My big complaint was that the foreshadowing was very obvious. I was hoping to be surprised by the ending but it all unfolded as predicted. I'm curious however, to see what Andi is like in the later books.
8/10: Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created.
If we fail, we die, and if we die, the Confederation might die, too.
A great look into Andi Lafarge's background. Of course, there was no Tyler Barron, and I did miss Dauntless' captain, but this is an origin story and it has something even better than Barron in it.
The Badlands and the Empire's old tech and history.
This really interests me, so I'm hoping for more revelations, and more tech discoveries, and more Badlands. Which all means more Andi, and I'm OK with that.
Truth is, while the story was there, the writing was not. The pov and narrative often seemed to be coming from multiple perspectives all in the same paragraph. Omnipresent mixed with close first spun a confusing miasma that I mostly flipped through. The story was interesting but I was hard pressed to continue reading. I never connected with any of the flesh-stitched characters and if not for the sprinkling of action this would be a non-read. The only reason it got a 2 was the familiar trope was easy to appreciate, though clumsily rolled out. Jay has done better in other novels, so not sure what happened here.
I loved the familiar feel of the book (following up on The Blood on the Stars series). Andi is a great character and I liked learning her back story. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because of all of the grammar and story errors (interrupts the flow of the story somewhat for me).
I love Jay Allan's books. He's a great story teller who makes you feel like you're right there with the characters. When you start reading you don't want to put the book down. If you're looking for a great space/ fantasy/ adventure then I recommend you read Jay Allan's books.
I had always wondered about Andromeda Legarge's background and, Jay Allan, you did not disappoint. This was a fantastic story. To understand Andi's living in the Gut, her living with, and being trained by, the Marine, it all explains a lot. Now I can't wait to read the next book, Wings of Pegasus. I feel strongly that it won't disappoint.
This was an excellent backstory of Andromeda LaForge. I am thrilled and can’t wait for book 2. Her character backstory really makes me see her in a darker light but a stronger understanding of her fierce struggle to rise!!!!
I was reading about a life that gave me the a idea of what was going to happen and I was lost in the moment of the characters and the people who have been working with the story line and keeping the future stories believable.
There is more narration and less dialogue then I usually find in books. But the narrator tells a good story so it seemed to work out okay. I didn't care for the violence in the form of combat and assassination, but it fit the world that the author created.
Admittedly I read too many of his books and they do get a tad repetitive, but I definitely enjoyed this series spinoff. Will go for the next book about Andi for sure
Allen has done it again. Surprises and a wonderful story.
The main character grows with the story but there are numerous surprises that make the book a wonderful read and wanting to start the next book in the series.
Fast paced action with a first person perspective! So it’s page turner! But! It’s written as if he used a template and there are a lot of anoying repetitions. But it’s possible to finish the book unike a Jan Guillou book!
An outstanding addition to the Blood on the Stars storyline. Either the book was too short or I read it voraciously because I chewed this one up to quickly. Yes, it's that good. Edge of your seat action and I literally cannot wait for the next installment.
Liked it. Kind of a grittier, more believable Solo story. Could have done with more twists - was a little too predictable and one-dimensional - but good going anyway.
I really enjoyed getting Andi’s back story and learning how she came to be such a badass. It is perfect for those who have been reading the Blood on the stars series, but it can also be read as a stand alone book.
