This book had just about everything in it. A crazed psychopaths, the therapist who tried to help him, but couldn't so she took off for parts unknown with her dog and 2 horses. Ended up in a small down in Montana where she met a ladies man but he found a job for her working in a library/book store with a really small apartment upstairs. She found a place to store her horses and then was using them as they were trained for as therapy horses for some troubled teen girls. One of the girls dad suffers from PTSD from serving as a Marine in Afghanistan so she is trying to help him too as he won't go to the therapy he is entitled to and they eventually fall in love. Strange things start happening to her like finding things in her apartment and her dog getting hurt and she has no idea how this is happening. You need to read the book to learn more. I can't wait to read Book 2 in the series.
I had the unique opportunity to read this book in advance, and in a word - Wow!
For me, reading can sometimes be a task! However, I was pleasantly surprised when that was not the case at all for Run For The Hills. This author did such an amazing job holding my attention the whole way through, tapping into ALL my emotions (yes, I cried), and when I finished I held the book {iPad} to my heart, and thought “I wish I wasn’t done.”
This book truly has something for everyone! From the hair on the back of your neck standing straight up to a tear streaming down your face - all entwined into one deliciously good book that’s hard to put down once you pick it up! 10/10 would recommend this book to read!
4.5 Stars. This is a very well written book that takes on some pretty serious issues. It gives a realistic look into PTSD in a respectful manner. The leading lady is an Equine Therapist and her work with her patients and horses is very enlightening. I especially enjoyed and was impressed by the scenes involving the 4 pre-teen girls. There are two leading men, Cade and Trent Stone, both of which are smitten with Joscelyn. This is an engaging story of healing, second chances, community, and love. There is also some suspense and more than once I had to reach for my tissues. As with the other books I have read by this author, the love scenes are PG without any details. Personally, I would prefer a PG-13 version.
Such a heartbreaking and heartwarming story at the same time. Dealing with any kind of PTSD is hard and the ones who suffer from it many times denies any help or the ones around them refuse to acknowledge that they can do more they loved ones and help them to have a more settled life because some things will never go away, unfortunately. I loved the caring characters and the way they are there for the young generation and trying to make them go through their mistakes and understand what it’s better for them. Now the suspense was done very well for me, it made me guess if Leonard was the one behind all the small details that we were given along the way. Looking forward to the next books in the series.
This was such a fun read. From the very beginning we learn about Joscelyn and the antagonist. We know right from the beginning what kind of suspense and thrilling adventure we are about to be thrown into, and Jodi Burnett did a FANTASTIC job creating this world for her readers. The book kicks off with suspense and pulls you into a thrilling journey that keeps you flipping pages until the end. Joscelyn is on the run from a crazy ex-patient, who refuses to let her go after she refers him to another doctor. He just wouldn't take no for an answer. He stalks her, hurts her animals and terrifies her to the core. So . . . she runs. ...runs right into a small little town in Montana so she can hide from him until the police catch the bad guy. There she meets the dreamy, and flirtatious Trent. You will crush on him until you blush. But of course, it can't be that easy, can it? Enters Cade, Trent's brother. More rugged, but just as handsome. But he's nothing like his brother. Cade is a former Marine, who's suffering from PTSD, and Joscelyn has made it her mission to help him so he can be there for his teenage daughter. As relationships start brewing, so does the suspense. Small clues are leading Joscelyn to believe that her stalker has caught up with her, and Cade, along with others in the town who have grown to love her, try to help free her from this nightmare, and rescue her from the terrifying sociopath who may be lurking the shadows. The dialogue felt real, the characters were likable, fun, and everything flowed so beautifully. Nothing felt too drawn yet and yet you had the perfect visual of this town, the smells, the colors and really felt like you were IN the story. Beautifully written! I can't wait to check out the next book in the series.
This book grabbed my attention right away and then I couldn't put it down! The author is very descriptive, which I love. I found myself really caring about the characters and I could visualize each scene vividly. I am looking forward to the rest of this series to see what happens next!
Jodi Burnett’s Run For the Hills was an unexpected page turner that I could not put down. Right from the beginning I got attached to her horses, and felt I was in the story myself. The charming town she landed in was a place I would like to visit and the suspense she felt as a character I felt myself. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
If you like the kind of book that immediately grabs your attention and makes you want to keep reading, this is the book for you!
From the very beginning, I found it difficult to put this book down. Everything from the character development, to the incredible ways of the author paints a picture with her words, makes it easy to feel like you are right there in the book. There many times that I found myself holding my breath at the intense suspense and heart-wrenching emotion that is woven throughout the storyline of this great book. I can't wait for the release of book 2 in the Flint River series!
One of the two key things I want from my books is to be interested immediately (first 10 pages in this case!) and have believable characters who I care about. Burnett is excellent at both and I'm waiting (impatiently) for the second in the series! I love a strong, woman character and Burnett again delivers. I've always wanted to understand equine therapy and this is a entertaining way to learn.
I loved the combination of the equine therapy and the suspense of the thriller. The main characters are rich and well rounded. I found myself rooting for them and couldn't wait to find out witch of the two brothers she chose. The bad guy is a definite creeper and boy what an ending! Love it! Highly recommend.

Run For The Hills is a nonstop roller coaster thrill ride from the first page until last page. The prequel, which is a sequel, to this exciting new series by Jodi Burnett, A Flint River Christmas, takes place after book 3 in the series, Danger In The Hills, which I read first. After reading the prequel/sequel, I had to buy and read the Flint River Trilogy to find out for myself how it all begun.
Run For The Hills starts with Joscelyn Turner, a therapist working with disadvantaged teenagers being stalked and threatened by an ex-client. The local sheriff can’t help her because she won’t violate client-therapist privilege by divulging his name. After her horses are injured and her cat killed by the stalker, she loads her horses up and she, with her dog, Teddy, leave Colorado with no destination in mind and with no idea of how long she will be gone. Joscelyn runs for the hills and ends up in the small town of Flint River Montana.
Joscelyn takes a job as the town’s librarian, and begins working with a group of troubled girls, one of whom is the granddaughter and niece of her new friends, Mary and Travis Stone. Joscelyn meets Sadie’s dad, Cade Stone, Travis’ older brother who suffers from PTSD and while trying to help both him and his daughter Sadie, falls in love with him. Everything is going smoothly until Lenny shows up in Flint River and kidnaps Sadie to use her to get revenge on Joscelyn. Will he get his revenge on Joscelyn? Will Joscelyn and Sadie survive Lenny’s attacks? Will Joscelyn and Cade’s newly found love survive? You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out. The ending will blow you away. Now I’m off to read the second book in this dynamite trilogy, Hidden In The Hills.
When she is targeted by a violent stalker, equine therapist, Joscelyn Turner leaves town. It is difficult to report her stalker, who is a former patient, due to privacy laws. She stops in Flint River not planning to stay but feels safe for the first time in a long time. She is welcomed by the Stone family, Trent who is a charmer, his brother Cade a Marine suffering PTSD, Cade’s motherless daughter Sadie and their grandmother Mary who invites her to stay. As Joscelyn becomes involved in this small community, she spends time with younger teens who need counseling. She also tries to convince Cade to stop punishing himself for living while members of his team did not make it home. When acts of vandalism begin again, has her stalker found her? As her friendship for Cade slowly evolves into much stronger feelings, will she be able to stay or be on the run forever? A delightful mix of small-town life, romance and danger as Joscelyn tries to move on with her life. I found Joscelyn’s counseling lessons interesting and thought provoking. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Joscelyn Turner flees Colorado for Montana when an ex-client threatens her life, with her beloved dog Teddy and her two well-trained horses in tow. She's an equine therapist and soon finds there's need for her just where she landed. A group of young girls, struggling with peer pressure and seeking their parents' attention, have just ended up in detention. The town pleads with her to take up this case. Josce settles in to working with the girls and in the local bookstore/library, but she's still looking over her shoulder hoping her stalker can't find her in this remote part of Montana. Her plans to go unnoticed are in vain, though, as she catches the eye of two brothers who begin to vie for her attention. It's only a matter of time before her past catches up to her present, and before she has to make a choice that could tear a healing family apart.
The story is compelling, and the characters grow on you quickly. I couldn't put this book down, though it's more thriller than mystery Burnett weaves in the equine therapy well, and the lessons that Josce teaches the girls, and later some adults, using the horses at parallel were insightful. It could have easily become preachy or corny but she navigated that line well. In addition to equine therapy and therapist ethics, PTSD was another serious topic that was respectfully woven into the story. The small town setting was a character in itself, Burnett breathes life into it and makes it imperative to the storyline. I enjoyed what a smart, capable heroine that Josce was, and how she bonded with the teens and the town.
Excellent start to the Flint River series. Run for the Hills is the ninth book by Jodi Burnett that I’ve read or listened to, and while the first eight were excellent stories, for emotional value they don’t hold a candle to this book. Overall, this book has much darker themes than any of the previous books I’ve read/listened to, but the way Jodi treats these themes is excellent and in many instances her treatment for them filled my eyes with tears, and other instances I was filled with hope. This is the first of Jodi’s books that didn’t include any law enforcement officials as central characters, so I can’t wait to see where the second episode in the Flint River series takes us. This is an excellent story to get acquainted with Jodi Burnett’s writing if you are new to her books. If you are already a fan, this is a must read/listen book. I listened to Nick Cracknell narrate the story, and his story telling skills are superb. He did an excellent job bringing the story and each character to life, not to mention his voices for each character provide excellent visual images of each person.
As usual another great story from Jodi. This one kept me glued to the pages. It's very well written with some great characters, both good and bad. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Jocelyn Turner is a therapist and she uses horses to help with her therapy at times. When one of her clients becomes too aggressive, she refers him to another therapist who can prescribe things she believes can help him. But that doesn't go over well and he retaliates. He kills her cat and hurts one of her horses. She tries to report it to the police but they can do nothing without proof. So Jocelyn goes on the run. She loads up her horses and her dog & flees. Ending up in a small Montana town, she finds a new life. She has a group of snooty teenage girls she is counceling and she has made friends and started to fall in love. But as we know, all good things come to an end. Her stalker finds her and the tormenting starts over again. This time Jocelyn must use cunning and intelligence to beat him at his own game. I absolutely adored this book. It looks like another great series on the way.
I selected this book from KU because I have recently read the author's new series and I wanted to check out her earlier books. Overall I liked the book and there was a good deal of tension. This is the story of Joscelyn, who is an equine therapist working outside of Denver with many at risk teens. As the book opens she has referred one of her patients to a medical doctor as she feels he might need more intensive care and pharmaceuticals. This patient then begins stalking he and hurting her animals so she takes off and ends up in Flint River, Montana. Where she not only finds a place to stay, but a job and many people that could benefit from her therapy. The suspense/thriller part of the story was good, but at times I felt Joscelyn was not seeing signs right in front of her. This also happened in some of her sessions with Cade. Also I could have lived without the chosing between brothers aspect.
Run For The Hills (Flint River Series Book 1), my sixteenth read from author Jodi Burnett, who is one of my favorite authors. As I wait for the next book in her current series I've gone back to an earlier series I hadn't yet read. This 275-page continues the trend of well-written, enjoyable books, it caught my attention in the opening pages & I never put it down until completed. A Jodi Burnett book is like a visit from an old friend. "I was given a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more in this series with Hidden In The Hills (Flint River Series Book 2) next on my TBR list, and look forward to SPEC OPS K9 (Tin Star K9 Series Book 8) when it's published in October of 2024. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
I enjoyed this book! It's a great introductory to PTSD, the complexities of client/patient confidentiality (though I disagree with the character's amount of time she withheld the identity) and I think this book does a great job of destigmatizing PTSD while also exploring some simple level coping skills. I read these out of order, and I am still pleased with reading this after the 2nd book in the series. I will say it didn't ruin anything and added more enjoyment personally. I thought it was a bit simplistic of the way the blame is shifted in the end. Anyone in their petty emotions may have held a similar mindset. This touches on so many areas of loss, love, second chances, small town drama, stalking, attempted assaults, animal abuse/harm/death, and war topics. The author does a justifiable approach to complex topics and sensitive parts. Now to read book 3 ♡♡♡♡
There was never really a mystery. I wanted to scream at the lead female MC REPEATEDLY for not doing things she should have. For being soooo dumb. For being a push over. For many things. She was a Dr. She was supposed to be smart. And now the next book is about Trent. I definitely don't want to read about him. What an ass. I would read it if I was sure he'd get some sense knocked into him, or if I knew he was going to have HIS heart stomped all over for once. I don't feel one kind feeling towards his character. Would I recommend this book? I don't know. It was kinda entertaining but at NO time in this book, was I ever surprised by anything. It waa sadly all very typical
Audiobook: This first book in the "Flint River Series" was an exciting, twisted adventure that never stopped moving forward from one scene to the next. Joscelyn Turner was on the run from a former patient who was dangerous. She ended up in Flint River where she planned on hiding out until her stalker was caught. Soon Joscelyn became involved in the lives of the ranching community. I enjoyed the small-town community. I liked the characters as their flaws made them seem realistic. I admired the skillful handling and empathetic touch that dealt with the theme of PTSD which permeated the story. Nick Cracknell's narration was good, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
I enjoyed this book. The blurb says so much, I won't repeat it here. Jocelyn has gathered up her menagerie of animals and the minimum of possessions and simply drove until she couldn't drive anymore before arriving in a small town in Montana. As well as the two brothers who obviously have an unresolved issues between them, she meets their kindly grandmother. Jocelyn proved her worth, using her speciality Equine therapy with 3 warring high school girls, one of whom is Cade's daughter. She feels settled and beginning to let down her guard when the dread starts again. There is a Cozy feel to the story imposed on the sheer terror of having a homicidal stalker. I found this an enjoyable read and the series continued to be so to the end
This is a great start to the author's Flint River series. We immediately recognize a strong female lead. She makes decisions which based on her training and experience seem appropriate, but in truth result in the anguish which she will experience later.
The author paints a wonderful picture of a woman concerned about people and animals. Her training allows her to combine them in a most helpful way for her patients. The story evolves as we learn more about her new family - a family she lucks into, but realizes it is the perfect choice for her.
Come along for the action, for the struggles with PTSD, and the heartwarming story of acceptance.
If you struggle with PTSD, please get help. It's out there, it's available and you don't have to do it alone.
Joscelyn Turner had a great life as a counselor for women and teens. She had a great apartment in Denver. It was all going well until one of her parents from the past decided to stalk her. He felt she stopped working with him to shuffle him off to another physician. She actually felt he needed more help than she could give.Leo needed medication and she was not able to prescribe the drugs he needed. When he injured one of her horses, she packed up and moved. She stopped for gas at a small town I Montana. The people there were kind and helped her to find a place to keep her animals and a job that was open. The first book in the Flint River series by Jodi Burnett was a good beginning to another of her suspense novels. Really enjoyed it.
The story is a romance, with a suspense of a psycho. The characters are real details, and the interactions are interesting and understandability. The town in Montana is a quirky and fun of a small town activities. The story is easy to read and quite entertaining. The small people are somewhat as stereotypical, but adds to the action. The stories include both people and horse therapy and actions. Despite a concerns for threats of a nasty young patients, the book is very easy to anticipate for everyone dealing with problems. The Flint River ends becoming a new resident, after planning to back to Colorado is abandoned. This is a feel good story.
Joycelynn is a therapist in Colorado have one of her clients, Lenny, is not happy when Joycelynn sounds into another doctor. He stalked her and threatened her so she finally decides to run from Colorado to Montana. I found the plat very good and really kept me on my toes. The characters were absolutely wonderful and the interaction between them was amazing. Joycelynn using horses as a way to overcoming anxiety and fear was definitely different. I recommend this book for all who like a good love story and thriller all rolled into one.
I received this book from an ARC program that I belong to, and it was a good choice.
The characters were well developed, the story line kept me interested, its socially relevant - a few parts were a bit too "smooshy" for me, not easily realistic, (as a person who deals with PTSD in 2 members of her family ) and I also wonder if there might be triggers for those who actually have it.
Its a good book, I recommend it. The villain was QUITE scary, and the knight is shining armor was perfect.
