Southampton 1920. Phoebe Collins rose to the challenge of running the family fruit and veg stall when her father did not return from the front. The work outside in Kingsland market in all weathers can be hard, but with her mother and younger brother Tim to support, she’s determined that it continue to be a success. However, when Phoebe finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time and witnesses something terrible, she will need all her strength to face the trials ahead and the fear that her loved ones may come to harm.
I was so sad to hear of June Tate’s passing. I have read all of her books to date, although they’ve not been marked or reviewed on Goodreads as this was way before I became a reader/reviewer/blogger.
I’m so sad that this ends the final chapters of her great talent in telling stories. She was so good in the realism of characters, bringing them to life and totally bringing out the best in them, and the worse. This is shown in this book too. We have many characters taking centre stage and giving the readers a lot to get their teeth into.
Never judge a book by its cover because this holds some very dark things in here. Family drama, life history, and days when people cared, when doors could be left unlocked. When friends were truly friends.
But when villains thought they were above the law. When Police where on the streets.
A remarkable story that truly kept my interest and never faltered.
I have to say that reading this book was emotional as it was released not long after June Tates passing away. They story of Phoebe Collins and her life working the family fruit and veg stall on Kingsland Market and supporting her Mother and litle brother.I don't want to say too much as it will spoil the book for others but i will say it is a BRILLIANT book and worthy of more than 5* such a shame we won't get any more books from such an amazing and talented lady.
Southampton on the south coast of England in 1920 and Phoebe has taken over the family fruit and veg stall at the market, after her fathers death she found that she owed it to him to step in and run the stall. All was fine until one night she witnessed a murder, as much as she tried to blot it out she can't and she is worried about it so much that she couldn't tell a soul about it and tried to carry on with the stall. A good friend helps her out but she doesn't realise that he is an undercover police officer how will she cope when she discovers this? Very soon her mother is taken ill and admitted to hospital and her life changes forever. This is a lovely romantic story written by an author who is sadly no longer with us, but well worth a read if you enjoy saga stories.
I've read quite a few sagas and enjoyed these too but this one wasn't quite there. True, it was a sweet story set in times when people were neighborly... When it was more common to help than to hinder... But it was all very predictable. Following the hardships of Phoebe everything eventually falls in place for her happily ever after. An easy "in-between" read for when you want to relax your reading pace.
June Tate who sadly suddenly passed away recently, was a fabulous writer and author. June leaves behind a brilliant back catalogue of her work in books. This is the latest and sadly the last book from her. I highly recommend all of her books. I now hope we will one day see her work brought to life on screen.
You can always rely on a lovely read from June Tate. Her stories nearly always have a little bit of mystery in them. The Girl From Kingsland Market I just could not put down and it is a recommended five star read from me.
I am so sorry that June Tate passed away last year, she kept many of us entertained with her writing.
This had such a wonderful review, but you know I found it really mediocre. Yes, it was a sweet story, but , really, the really interesting parts weren't developed enough to make room for the romance of it. We women are worth much more than this. Really disappointed with where this went
Well narrated audio book carrying the listener along on the journey of Pheobe and her brother Tim. Lovely characters and a storyline with a mix of joy and sadness . Thoroughly enjoyable. Would recommend.
A well written story that covers many issues and aspects , but one of those stories that you know whatever bad things happen to the main character that it will all come right in the end
