Geoff Johns originally hails from Detroit, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in Media Arts and Film. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s in search of work within the film industry. Through perseverance, Geoff ended up as the assistant to Richard Donner, working on Conspiracy Theory and Lethal Weapon 4. During that time, he also began his comics career writing Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and JSA (co-written with David S. Goyer) for DC Comics. He worked with Richard Donner for four years, leaving the company to pursue writing full-time.

His first comics assignments led to a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Since then, he has quickly become one of the most popular and prolific comics writers today, working on such titles including a highly successful re-imagining of Green Lantern, Action Comics (co-written with Richard Donner), Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, Infinite Crisis and the experimental breakout hit series 52 for DC with Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid. Geoff received the Wizard Fan Award for Breakout Talent of 2002 and Writer of the Year for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well as the CBG Writer of the Year 2003 thru 2005, 2007 and CBG Best Comic Book Series for JSA 2001 thru 2005. Geoff also developed BLADE: THE SERIES with David S. Goyer, as well as penned the acclaimed “Legion” episode of SMALLVILLE. He also served as staff writer for the fourth season of ROBOT CHICKEN.

Geoff recently became a New York Times Bestselling author with the graphic novel Superman: Brainiac with art by Gary Frank.

This was quite fun!

It starts off with the usual origin and the family getting together and going to the Rock of eternity but when they find the seven magiclands in those tunnels they go to the Funlands and meet King kid there and its all fun until we know the dark secrets of this world and the battle ensues and then finally separation and everyone on their own adventures. Wildlands and Gamelands. Animals and Games. Black Adam vs Sivana. Return of a familial person and Billy at center of it all! Will he be able to save his family and what will be the fate of them?

Its a great volume and does a good job of catching the readers on everything going on and I love how they balance high stakes action with emotional storytelling and introducing new elements in the mythos and finally new villains and characters is great and the new challenges are a great addition for Billy. The return of 2 important people in his life was awesome. But the main thing is the art and its so good, like each panel so detailed and like makes this book a hundred times better and the story even more so. Amazing read and loved it the whole time through!

Geoff Johns has earned my trust through his excellent writing and revitalization of Green Lantern and Aquaman, just to name a couple. He delves into the mythos and embraces rather than trashes as so many other writers do. That is why that for a normal writer I would be freaking out right about now, because of all the drastic changes that are occurring to Captain Marvel... err Shazam. I'm going to follow through though, because if anyone can stick a book landing, it's Geoff Johns.

On the lower side of mediocre, Shazam is everything Geoff Johns loves: a variety of superheroes who are all different (except they're actually carbon copies) and weird concepts (that are actually old and tired) and epics that stretch on and on. If you're fine with that kind of story, that's cool, but, for these first 6 issues, it feels largely disjointed, paced poorly, and not that well thought-out.

I READ THE Vol 1 and 2

I gave this a 4 but I'm so tempted to give it a 3.

Geoff Johns resurrected Shazam in a big way number of years back with New52 Shazam Vol 1 which was a series of short stories that were attached to the New52 Justice League run.

So when the film came out based off that work I was so pleased! The film was as good or better then the book.

Well Johns took a very left field approach and crafted a odd story that feels like a Superman Mister Mxyzptlk story done poorly...

So why 4 stars?

Art is beautiful and I was pulled along by the story. For a 12 issue book though it's a brisk read...

The jist of the plot is the kids wonder into an under world called the magic lands, they get into trouble, simultaneously a figure in Billy's life shows up, Suprise! They all team up to take down 4 villians... 2 working together to steal shazams power, one trying to escape his prison in the magic land, and one...

Look I hope someone else takes over Shazam...

This story while okay felt really odd as the sequel to what we got in New52 run...

My guess is Johns was instructed to make a childrens friendly book... I could see some kids thinking this was very cool with its Alice in Wonderland or Wizard of Oz leanings.

I'm rating it for the book it is. Rather then the book I wanted.

4 stars for what it is.

2 or 3 stars for what I wanted... just didn't deliver.

Art is fantastic though!

This volume was great! Not only did I love the New 52 Shazam as a great companion to the film, sharing many elements, this comic acts almost as a continuation of the story if not in spirit. I am hopeful that in the sequel, after Black Adam premiers, that they use this as an influence. I thought that I might just read this volume, but I am sure now that I will see the story through in the next one they put out. It's just too much fun to miss!

This was definitely a fun read. I like how Geoff Johns did his best to keep the “fun” aspect of SHAZAM!, living up to the original concept.
I tend to like a bit more drama, but I see where the book is going and I like it.
I read this run in single issues and expected a resolution by the end, but it was left quite open ended (just when things were getting more interesting!). I guess I will have to keep on reading as the single issues come out instead of waiting for the arc to be finally over.

I love Geoff Johns. I love his approach to writing and building character and showing their humanity. He gets you to really care about the characters and see them as real.

Even if I don’t already like a particular superhero I know I’ll end up loving them because of Geoff Johns skill as a writer.

Way better than expected.
Post-Green Lantern Johns has been incredibly uneven, and my expectations on him being the one guy to get Shazam right were pretty low.

And this series ended up being a pleasant surprise.
Didn't love the Marvel Family becoming the Power Rangers, but everyone had a personality and got something to do.
Johns leaning into the more whimsical and fantasy based elements was nice and several of the twists were well handed.

Still clunky in spots, but one of the better attempts.
Shame it got derailed by various event stories.
