Heart Duet #1

HeartThrob

Rate this book
He was just another dad at my daughter’s school.
Another very hot, former teen heartthrob dad.
One I couldn’t get involved with.

Lennox Reign was the hottest teen star over fifteen years ago. Now, he's staring me daggers across the principal's office.

Not my fault my daughter got in trouble the first day of school and I seem to have 'bad mom' stamped on my forehead.

But now not only do I have to see Lennox and his very grown-up body now at school drop off, but we're working together on the school bake sale.

If he could just stop being a brooding heartbreaker for like two seconds.

He says he wants to keep the past in the past and move forward with his life, but the closer we get and the more I uncover, the more I can't help falling for the former actor.

The one who I know could easily break me.

And he will.

The single parent trope is not my thing and I honestly don't know why I picked it up other then curiosity after reading reviews and wanting to know what all the hype was about. Anyway, while it wasn't bad (well written in fact), it was just an okay read for me. In other words, it didn't leave me wanting to read the next book since this ends in a cliffhanger.

For those interested to know what it's about, be warned SPOILERS ahead:

While it was a very forgetable read for me, it does not mean others may not like it who enjoy this type of trope. It does have an awesome & funny heroine and a spunky daughter of hers. Hero as I said, did not come across as anything special in this book. Perhaps in the next one he will be more interesting but the little gained, seems to be another manho and not one that I care to read about.

OMGEEEEEE. I am loving this book. And that ending...really?! I know it's a duet but jeez rip my heart out a little why don't ya. LOL! Anywhooooo. This book is awesome and the way it's written is so addictive. I loved Lennox and Rachel. Really loved that there wasn't any silly, petty drama in their story, and they acted like adults and put children first. I can't wait until the next book comes along because that cliff had me like ahhhh shit! Here we go! Super angsty and lots of laughs to go along with it. Very evenly balanced in humor and tension! Loved it hard!

Ok, so I goofed. Do you know me? Do you know of my loathing for cliffhangers?! Well...when I found this book, I immediately knew I had to read it. I saw there was a book 2, that it was a "duet" but I either didn't read the blurb of book 2 very closely or there wasn't much to it yet because I'd convinced myself that it was more of a companion book as opposed to an actual continuation (I know, shame on me. But whatever gets you through the night *hehe* if you don't recognize that line, just wait)

The first time I read the blurb for this book I thought of Luke Perry. This was before his death, before his stroke...but it made me think of him, his teen heartthrob image and him being my first actor/character crush...my first "book boyfriend" if you will, before I even knew what that was (my first crush ever goes to Donnie Wahlberg, but I digress)...

One of the things that drew me to this book was the fact that it made me think of Luke Perry. I mean, isn't that the dream? You grow up, just so happen to meet your teen heartthrob crush and he falls in love with normal ole' you? So I knew I had to read this.

I'll admit, even tho Lennox had blonde hair, and when it was mentioned that he had blond hair, I kind of pictured him as a Paul Walker-esque, the predominant visual I had in my head was Dylan McKay. I just couldn't help it.

I was entranced by this book. I want to say I couldn't put it down, but that's not entirely true. It's not that it didn't hold my attention, but there were a couple of points when something was going to happen, and I just KNEW what it was and it gave me anxiety and embarrassment for the characters and I just needed a break. At one point, I was reading before bed and KNEW what was going to happen on the next page and I literally put my kindle down and fell asleep because I just couldn't handle going on at that moment. (yeah, this is why I don't really do books with a lot of angst 😟😬🙈)

I loved the slow build of this book. I loved how Rachel and Lennox met. I loved how she kept putting her foot in her mouth and their battle of emails. It was all just perfect. I loved that their daughters were friends and that Rachel was determined to get over the weirdness and dislike for their kids. I loved that the friendship grew and yet, Rachel still couldn't stop putting her foot in her mouth around Lennox.

Even though I loathe cliffhangers, I'm dying/looking forward to the next book. There were things hinted at in this book about Lennox's past and you got a little info, but I can't wait to read more. I can't wait to find out everything.

I did see the blow up coming. I had a couple of theories going, but the actual thing that happened...that was my main theory and I KNEW it was coming. I didn't expect the exact fall out but I was pretty proud of myself that I called it.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this book.

HeartThrob is book 1 in the Heart Duet and I could not put it down, Vernon is a new to me author and I am so excited to read the conclusion of Rachel and Lennox’s story.

Rachel is a newly divorced single mother living back with her parents, when she is called into the principal’s office on the first day and is left shocked and incredibly embarrassed when she comes face to face with her celebrity teen crush. Lennox is trying to live a quiet life with his daughter away from the limelight something that he had down to and art until Rachel walked into his life. Just when he thought he had found that someone he could fall for and trust; Rachel puts Lennox and his daughter front and centre in a media storm.

I personally loved this story, I knew that this story was a duet but I did not expect to be left dangling off a cliff; I am counting down the days until I can get my hands on the conclusion because whatever I think Vernon has planned I am sure that its going to be amazing.

HeartThrob by Magan Vernon a five-star read that will set your heart twiterpatting. This is the first part of the Heart Duet and what a start!! I will be honest and admit it took me a little while to get into, but I think it was me as I was busy when I started it and usually anything by Magan Vernon I just devour. What would you give for a daddy to be at your school to be someone that you used to drool over!! Oohhhh I would love that. This is funny and adorable and also a little crazy in the best way possible. I would love to hold a bake sale with the original milk moustachioed wonder, in fact I would love to like in Magan world, they are fun and flirty, but they have enough life and drama to make it feel real and true and enough that will suck you in. I know I’m eagerly awaiting number two!!

Honestly had a pretty decent start but absolutely hated the overall feel of this book, including the “cliffhanger” ending. Also disliked the third act breakup so the bad outweighs the good imo. Amy the funny mom and the little girls were the best thing to come out of this.

"He wasn't just a zaddy or DILF. He was mine."

5 HearThrob stars!! OMG.... One word... Brilliant!!!

Rachel is a newly single mom, trying to adapt to her daughter starting at a new school and moving back in with her parents. When she has to show up to the principals office on the first day of her daughters school, she knows nothing good could possibly come of this.

In walks Lennox, the boy she crushed on, the boy from the tv series she loved. But now he was all grown up and in the office with her.... what starts off as a back and forth of nasty words, turns into a playful friendship.

And while Rachel is battling her demons from her past relationship, she swears she can't date a dad from her daughters school, but her heart and head has other ideas. When Rachel and Lnnox are paired up for the school bake sale, all bets are off the table.

I really loved this story, I loved Lennox and Rachel. The build up of their relationship was slow and sweet. You really fall for them and their story and not to mention their adorable little girls. But both of them have a past that neither of them wants to deal with. And when Rachel makes one mistake everything crumbles.

This book does end in quite a cliffhanger, but I can't wait to see what happens in book two!

I absolutely loved this story and could not get enough of reading this story. I read this story all in one sitting because I wanted to read more about these two characters that had me cracking up laughing so many times throughout the story. There was a lot of humorous moments throughout the story and some incredibly sweet moments throughout the story. I found this was really well written by the author creating an incredibly sweet read. I really loved the storyline of this story and it drew me into the story from the moment I read the blurb.

Rachel was a hot mess throughout the story but she was a great mum. It was obvious how much she loved her daughter and how she always put her first. I found that Rachel was an incredibly relatable character and this really made me love this character.

Lennox was the hot single dad and former teen heartthrob that I loved loved loved reading about. I really enjoyed the mystery that surrounded his past and has me desperate for book 2 of this duet to find out more about him. But I loved the way that he is with Rachel and the relationship that he has with his daughter.

I really loved Lennox and Rachel for each other and found myself cheering for them to form the start of the story. I really loved the way they met and I really enjoyed both characters daughters within the story. I am excited to read what happens next between these two in the next story.

Holy steamy chemistry Batman! I've fallen head over heels for Rachel and Lennox. Both single parents trying to make a great life for their kids. One just happens to be an ex teen heart throb. No big deal right? Lennox and Rachel start off on the wrong foot. One teeny tiny incident has them both running to the school for their daughters. Heated words are exchanged, and a new friendship is formed with their daughters. Secrets have a way of getting out and I just hope these two can work through them.

Rachel is an awesomely awkward mom. Pretty much a lot of us. Always blurting stuff out at the wrong moments. She's a great mom to her daughter and she slowly shows she has a steel backbone. Lennox is an asshole. A smoking hot asshole. An asshole who knows when he's being an asshole, and can actually apologize for it. These two together have chemistry that is off the charts. Both are hesitant to start something for different reasons. Both can't fight the pull to each other.

I'm super stoked for HeartBreaker, I need to see the secrets come to life and these two getting their HEA. Heart Throb is a solid read with some hilarious word vomit moments. These two and their daughters will steal your heart!

I'm a fan of Magan Vernon's ONLY Series... so I was so excited to receive this ARC.

This is sort of a celebrity-normal girl romance but in this case, it's between a "retired" celebrity and an old fan girl.... Lennox and Rachel has had a rough adult life given that they're both divorced and raising kids. Their girls are classmates and has become the best of friends... Lennox and Rachel themselves working together for the school bake sale... One thing lead to another aaaaand the rest is history...

I don't have a problem with a single-parent romance... we probably interacted more with a single parent than married ones in this lifetime... It's not like couples set out to be divorced in the first place... Nobody likes $h!t but $h!t happens. It's just a harsh reality...

I don't like cliffhangers, so I was quite surprised to learn that this is book one of a duet... It probably said somewhere that it was but I just wasn't paying enough attention because I saw it was from Magan Vernon and signed up right away...

To be honest, it wasn't what I expected... I expected more... more depth and anticipation... and I personally think Lennox overreacted... I don't like guys who overreact. I'd expect it from a girl—no offense, but from a manly man? No... and what was that ending?? I was like, what the fü*k is this? Personally I don't think it was a big deal given that people already know he's a single dad... but I guess we'll just wait and see what happens in the last installment... if it'll all make sense or just plain drive you crazy... I hope Rachel gives him hell for acting like a d!čk...

HeartThrob by Magan Vernon is the first book in her Heart Duet.

HeartThrob tells Rachel and Lennox heart-wrenching story. Rachel Rise is a single mom, freshly divorced, backn in her hometown and has to start over. She works as freelance designer. Normally I don't go in detail about the storyline, but this time it's crucial to the story. Anyway, back to the story. When she gets recruited to co-organize an event at the kids school, she gets paired with him. Lennox Reign, former tv-star, model and teen-crush of Rachel. Everything is peachy til she makes a grave mistake and through this major , huge twist she destroys everything, literally.

HeartThrob is a story that packed me and didn't let me go. I was hooked from chapter one and read the book in one sitting, I simply couldn't put it down. The story is fantastic, the writing is excellent and I connected very easily with the characters. I love Lennox and Rachel's characters and can't wait to read the next installment in this Duet. I recommend HeartThrob and give 5 stars.

We all dream of what would happen if we met our teen heartthrob when we grew up. Here is your chance for that experience. It isn’t going to be a smooth ride full of flowers and sunshine.

Lennox and Rachel have things in their pasts that make them hesitant to get to know each other. He is standoffish and brash and that instantly rubs her the wrong way. She just wants to make it through the day and take care of her daughter.

This book is full of awkwardness, laughs and will make you realize we are all just trying to get by. I loved Ariana and Juniper. They are little girls after my own heart. I can’t wait to read Lennox’s story.

Quick notes-

Trigger warning: N/A

Ideal reader: someone who loves sarcastic humour and racy steaminess between two single parents

My general thoughts-

This is my first book from Magan and I'm wondering where she has been all my life?! This book is funny, sexy, romantic and inspiring. Plus, what a cliffhanger, holy!

My review-

1) What worked for me:
-OMG this book is so funny
-I loved the mom-side of this story as I could relate
-the steamy scenes were good and I liked the teasing leading up to it

2) What did not work for me:
-that cliffhanger killed me, lol

Pretty original with a former tv star raising his daughter alone in Dallas and he meets a recent divorced gal who also has a daughter. There is nothing really exciting about this story until the end as otherwise the gal is a bumbling idiot around the guy almost painful to read....
Lennox's POV here might of been helpful in the first installment. I can't for the life of me see the chemistry between these two.
So, I will look for the next in series but it better be with more chemistry....

HeartThrob by Magan Vernon is book One in the Heart Duet. This starts the story of Lennox and Rachel.
Lennox is a former TV Start now trying to live a quiet life raising his daughter. Rachel is a newly divorced mother with a daughter also. Working to get past the hurt left by a bad marriage. When she is called into the principle office she meets Lennox, her childhood TV crush. Sparks fly between the two but things don't go to easy then a bad decision might lead to the end for them.
Can't wait for the next installment in their story.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book was great. Len and Rachael have a lot of chemistry along with a great story line. I even laughed out loud a few times during this one. I love that Rach isn't your typical Mom/woman she is real. I can relate to her a lot. This book was refreshing and the ending!!! I need the next one ASAP!!!

Heartthrob is book 1 in the Heart Duet and it is amazing. What happens when an former teen star now single dad and a newly single mother must work together on the PTA? All sorts if things. But when one misstep ruins everything will Rachel be able to salvage things with Lennox? I couldn't put this book down and I absolutely enjoyed reading it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'm a sucker for the normal girl/celebrity guy trope. Probably because I have so many celebrity crushes myself.
When I found out this book was inspired by the author's love for 90s teen heartthrob Devon Sawa, I knew I had to read it.
It was a fun read, one that I found particularly refreshing and uplifting, especially during these troubling times. It was exactly the distraction I needed.
I can't wait to read the sequel!

Heartthrob
Heart Duet, Book 1
By: Magan Vernon
Narrated by: Hannah Baker

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it is well written with storylines that are captivating from start to end. The characters are complex and nicely developed, they are ones you can relate to. Both lead characters are single parents who daughters attend school together and become friends. Rachel Rise is trying to get back on her feet after her divorce, she moved her and her daughter Arianna back to her childhood home. Arianna starts a new school and immediately makes friends with Juniper, Lennox “Len” Reign’s daughter. Rachel notices Len, he is the former child actor and the teen heartthrob she had a crush on. The two do not exactly hit it off when they first meet. Rachel is too funny, some of her dialogue is hilarious. Len came off a bit uptight and broody but things changed when the PTA had them working together for the school’s fundraiser. I loved how everything played out, there is never a dull moment in this book, with plenty of drama, some angst and great humor, some heartfelt moments and a slow burn start to romance. The author keeps you on your toes, wondering what is in Lennox’s past that he does not talk about, I think the cliffhanger ending gives some insight of that that may be. I am looking forward to the 2nd part of the “Heart Duet”, “Heartbreaker”, I hope it becomes available on Audible soon.

I listened to the Audible edition, Hannah Baker is a wonderful narrator and voice artist. She does an awesome job portraying the characters and bringing them to life. She gives each character their own voice and personality which makes it easy to follow them as she switches roles, which she does flawlessly. You could hear how much heart she puts into her work as she projects the characters emotions into her performance. She is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen🎧

First: Cliffhanger warning! This is book one of a two-part duet; this one is from Rachel's point of view and part 2 is from Lennox's point of view.

Rachel is a single mother who has moved in with her parents to save money as she rebuilds her life and business after divorce. On her daughter Ariana's first day at a new private school, she makes friends with another girl in her class and they accidentally clog the classroom bathroom's toilet and cause a flood resulting in a visit to the principal's office. Rachel is surprised to see the father of the friend is Lennox Reign, former teen heartthrob and object of Rachel's teenage crush. Despite their daughters becoming best friends, Rachel and Lennox can't seem to get along. When they are paired together to head the school's bake sale fundraiser, though, things start to change between them. Until a misunderstanding goes viral and changes everything.

I did enjoy this book, even though there was no resolution and a new plot twist was introduced on the last page. I know the second book is coming soon so I can be patient. Maybe.

Rachel is a great character. She's sassy and independent and a fantastic mother. Her ex-husband was horrible but when she finally stands up to him I was cheering her on. Lennox helped her to see how the ex was treating her and that was an invaluable lesson no matter the outcome of their relationship. The girls are adorable third graders. I was also pleasantly surprised by Amy's character. I was anticipating her to be a "Mean Girls mommy" but she ended up completely opposite of that and a good friend to Rachel.

I can't wait to read the conclusion to this story. If part 2 is as good as part 1 we will not be disappointed.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

He was just another dad at my daughter's school. Another very hot, former teen heartthrob dad. One I couldn't get involved with. Lennox Reign was the hottest teen star over fifteen years ago. Now he's staring me dagger across the principles office. Not my fault my daughter got in trouble the first day of school and I seem to have "bad mom" stamped on my forehead. But not not only do I have to see Lennox and his very grown-up body now at school drop off, but we're working together on the school bake sale. If he could just stop being a brooding heartbreaker for like two seconds. He says he wants to keep the past in the past and move forward with his life, but the closer we get the more I uncover, the more I can't help falling for the former actor. the one who I know could easily break me. And he will.

HeartThrob is the first book in this duet so you should expect the cliffhanger to be coming at the end. However I loved this book. Loved Lennox and Rachael. She has moved back in with her parents after her divorce and is trying to build her graphic art business. I fell in love with her daughter and Lennox's from the get go. Who can't love children who just happen to become best friends. Another thing that really cracked me up was how Rachel keeps putting her foot in her mouth at the wrong time. This book was just fun to read until Bam and you want the next book as soon as you can get it. If you love single smoking hot dads and funny then you do not want to miss this book.

The couple: Len and Rachel

Romance trope: single parents/former actor
Series: Heart Duet
Length: 180 pages

Plot: Rachel has moved in with her parents after her divorce and now her daughter is going to a new private school. On the first day, she meets the father of her daughter's new friend, a former teen heartthrob named Lennox, of just Len now. They don't start off on the right foot but soon get to know each other better. But one mistake turns Len's world upside down and the past comes back to haunt him.

Commentary: They seemed right for each other - cute banter, attracted to the other - and then he was a bit of a jerk at the end. How on earth was Rachel supposed to know what would happen when her photo got out? Granted, she shouldn't have sent it without permission. That's absolutely true. However, he never told her anything about an NDA, secret baby, a scandalous affair, or legal issues. He barely mentioned that he had bad things in his past with no context. So that was unsatisfactory. And then it was a cliffhanger, which I didn't expect since I opened the book with no information at all. I haven't dicided if I'm reading the next one yet.

Next book in the series: HeartBreaker

Rachel is starting over after her divorce. She's moved back in with her parents and her daughter Ariana has started a new school. Not even halfway into Ariana's first day of school, Rachel gets called into the principal's office. There she meets Lennox, a former teen idol who she used to have posters of on her walls, and the father of a student at the school.

I loved the set up for this story. What would you do if faced with the famous guy you used to have a huge crush on, and he has only gotten better looking with age?

In Rachel's case she alternates between feeling embarrassed and being sarcastic and sassy. There were some moments her mouth ran away with her and she ended up saying things she didn't mean to share. My favorite moments, though, were when she stood up for herself and said how she felt.

The author did a nice job with the secondary characters too. I loved Ariana and her friendship with Lennox's daughter Juniper. PTA mom Amy was also a great surprise. I was worried at first that she would be there only to either be the typical rude/over the top private school parent. Instead she is hilarious as one of Rachel's first friends.

This book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, but the second book will be out soon and it is from Lennox's point of view!

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

Warning, this story is addicting and will pull you completely in. That's what it did to me. Rachel is a newly single mom, divorced, and living with her parents with her young daughter. As she is trying to get used to this new life she never thought she'd live, she is also dealing with her daughter new best friend's father Lennox. He has an attitude with her and they seem to butt heads. He is also her celebrity crush from when she was a girl. And to make it worse, they have to work on the bake sale committee together. Talk about an enemies to lovers. Once these two finally put their guards down they see what is truly there. Then a disaster happens that threatens to ruin their happiness. I connected with Rachel. I am not a single mother myself but I felt for her. I was so glad this author made her daughter not a normal little girl. She liked boy things and had a different personality. It made me able to relate more. And also I felt for Rachel. How many of us parents feel like a hot mess who can't fit in all the time? Right here! The only issue I have with this book is I need book two like now. This author left us needing to find out what happens. I highly suggest this to romance fans. Get ready to love these characters. You'll laugh out loud and also feel your heart clenched. This narrator was the perfect voice for Rachel. Feels like she really is her!
