She’s a young doctor who loves the big city. He’s the young mayor of an infamous, remote Alaskan town. Can their attraction be a prescription to overcome long distance?
Life is turning out just as Phoebe had seemingly planned. She’s about to graduate from med school and has secured a plum posting at a top New York City clinic. But on Christmas Day she’s forced to take a small detour when she learns of her Aunt Betts’s death and must take a quick trip to her aunt’s quirky town, where she served as its long-time mayor, to oversee her final affairs.
Aldus is the new mayor of Whittier, Alaska, one of the most remote towns in the country. It has picturesque views and is known as “The Town Under the Same Roof”; the large majority of its 220 inhabitants all live in one building. Aldus strives to bring the town into the new century but a mysterious decision by its past mayor makes his task a difficult one.
There’s an instant attraction between Phoebe and Aldus but they deny it, knowing any romance won’t survive long distance as well as their pasts. Can a snowstorm keeping Phoebe in Whittier bridge the gap and bring them closer, or will it be a bitter pill that keeps them – and the town – divided?
Under the Same Roof is a sweet contemporary romance that explores the magic of small town life. If you like quirky and loveable characters, medical drama and a slow-burning romance that’ll warm your heart, then you’ll love M.K. Lansbury’s enchanting novel.
A ghostwriter for a number of successful books and novels of all genres, M.K. Lansbury has finally decided to begin writing stories that are the most important to her:

Under the Same Roof: A Small-Town Romance By M. K. Lansbury
This is the first full length book written by this author. A solid home run right out of the ballpark I'd say. I enjoy the author's writing style and was pleasantly surprised with this book. In the spirit of full disclosure I have read other works by this author, which I also enjoyed. But there is a difference between a novella and an entire book. I have found with some other authors that start out writing strictly novellas have a hard time transitioning to a full book. They tend to fill up the extra space with fluff, filler, things that confuse and or distract from the storyline. I can very happily report that M. K. Lansbury did not do that at all. Instead she charmed me with this book.
Phoebe's parents have travelled the world to help others. Phoebe, herself, has just a couple of weeks before she sits for the boards to get her medical license. Then she can start working as a Plastic surgeon and can start settings roots. During Christmas, while missing her parents, she gets a phone call from a man telling her that her aunt Betts had died. Phoebe ends up traveling to Whittier, Alaska to handle everything. Whittier, Alaska is different than most small towns. Almost all 220 inhabitants all live together in one unique building. The history of Whittier is so different from any other place. Upon arriving she is thrust into a whole new world. Half the town loves her at first site because they loved aunt Betts who was their mayor for a long time. The other half hates her and Phoebe can't for the life of her figure out why. Even the new mayor, Aldus, treats her with contempt and hate. The realization that things weren't quite what she thought when it came to aunt Betts really confused her. But Phoebe decides just to do what she came to do and leave the day after the funeral. Unfortunately things don't go as planned and a snowstorm causes the only way into town to be completely blocked, causing Phoebe to stay in this town a little longer. This ends up being such a good thing because she was able to save 2 of the residents lives. Phoebe discovered aunt Betts moved to Whittier because of love. She was also able to find out why the current mayor disliked her aunt so much. Seems aunt Betts made some decisions for the town that weren't such a good idea. Luckily Phoebe was able to call a gentleman who she met on the flight over and try to help the town out. By this time the way out of town is clear. Despite making some great friends & possibly finding love, she must return to New York and her life, even if that means leaving her heart behind.
Normally when reading a book I am drawn to the character. Reading Under the Same Roof drew me in because of the town of Whittier. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of research that was put into this book. Though I appreciate every single minute of it because if that fell short it would've ruined the entire storyline. Typically authors invent a small town for their stories. Being based in a real location is something that makes this book stand out.
I fell in love with the characters almost as much as the location. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Phoebe while at the same time admiring her. She was a strong female throughout the story, even if she had moments of doubt. I was also more than able to see the growth in her from the start of the book. I had an instant dislike to Aldus. Even while Phoebe was swooning I was thinking how much of a rear end he was. But Phoebe could dish the attitude right back at him, and did. Aldus also grew as a character from being very quick to judge & hotheaded, to more mature and calmer. He actually started trying to see the positive in bad situations thanks to Phoebe not letting him get away with his crap. The townsfolk of Whittier are amazing. They might all technically live together and care about each other, but they don't all think alike or always agree with each other. But there is a wide range and eclectic mix of folks that add greater dimension to the story.
M. K. Lansbury wrote one heck of a book. There were a lot of internal struggles that helped push the story forward. There were also slight elements of suspense that added depth and kept me flipping each page looking for answers. The ups & downs, back & forth definitely made a difference and kept readers guessing until the very end just how things were going to turn out. In the end everything was tied up with a neat bow. Our hero and heroine found a solution to their distance issues. The town of Whittier was saved by a young man Phoebe had met shortly before her trip to Alaska. (Who she also challenged and pushed to grow & we got to see the changes in even him.) There were a lot of layers to this book. I think the author is off to a phenomenal start with her author career. I can't wait for her next book. And while I don't know if there are any plans in the future, I can say without a doubt that if this book happened to be the start of a series based in Whittier I would not be sorry.
I received an ARC of this book. I have chosen to leave my review in support of the book and author. All opinions expressed are mine and mine alone.
I read to relax, imagine being friends with the new characters I meet, if only for a short while, and enjoy short or long visits to different parts of the world. M.K. Lansuby’s story met my criteria in these areas along with her swift flowing writing style. I fell in love with Whittier, Alaska and the unique characters, most of whom live in one building.
In two short weeks, Phoebe will sit for the boards to attain her medical license and set down roots in New York unlike her parents who travel the world to help others. Phoebe has set her future in stone until she receives a call from a man in Whittier relaying devastating news. Her Aunt Betts, the town’s mayor, has died and Phoebe, who can’t locate her parents, must travel to the small town to handle everything. From the moment Phoebe settles in for her flight to Whittier, to the day she flies home, the readers are introduced to realistic characters, small-town secrets, and the magnificent setting of Whittier, Alaska.
I did wish the romantic aspect and the medical situations in this story would have been more believable. I was also confused as to why half the town’s residents didn’t welcome Phoebe with open arms when the truth about her aunt’s recent, mayoral actions was not revealed until close to the end of the story.
As a reviewer, I don’t believe it’s my place to write a book description or spoilers, but I will leave you with this—does Phoebe change her future plans and move to Whittier to follow the man, the town’s residents, and the gorgeous scenery she has fallen in love with?
Deborah King is the author of Daring Dreamer and Bedazzled Dreamer—her first two books in the Inspiration In Cologne series.
This a sweet, clean romance set in a remote town in Alaska. Phoebe is a young medical student just getting ready take her board exams. When she learns her aunt has died, she travels to the small town of Whittier, Alaska to attend her funeral and settle her personal affairs. Whittier is a town where most of the citizens live in one large building, which also houses the B&B, restaurants and various other business. While in Whittier, Phoebe learns that her aunt had been mayor of the town for years and had mismanaged the town’s finances. The new mayor, Aldus, is openly hostile as are quite a few of the town’s citizens. The rest of the townspeople are friendly and endeavour to make Phoebe feel more welcome. She discovers more secrets of her aunt’s life, begins to appreciate the town and it’s citizens and they way they look out for each other, and develops a serious attraction to Aldus. Phoebe also learns that she is more than capable of handling medical emergencies in the town and begins to question her future plans. Both Aldus and Phoebe admit their feelings, but neither can see how a relationship could work for them. He is needed in the town, especially since it is facing bankruptcy and uncertainty. She must finish her education in New York, though she longs to help find a solution to Whittier’s financial problems. Read this insightful and beautifully written story to find out how their relationship plays out. I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This was a very good and enjoyable work by this new author for me. I was impressed with the amount of work that went into her description of Whittier, Alaska that she shared with the reader. Interesting location to say the least! Phoebe has flown from NYC to Whittier because her aunt Betts has passed away. Upon arrival she finds that her aunt had been the mayor there and the feelings were very mixed about the quality of her work. She is introduced to the new mayor, Aldus, and the two find they have feelings for each other, but how will a relationship at totally opposite ends of the country possibly work out? Whittier is a town with 220 population and everything is housed in one building! Phoebe still needs to take her medical exams in New York City to become a plastic surgeon. However, her time in Whittier makes her rethink the direction that she has set for herself. The reader can take this journey with Phoebe and Aldus in this very clean, sweet romance that will warm the hearts of romance readers. I received an ARC copy of this book. This is my voluntary, honest and completely personal review. VICKI FROM WYOMING
One thing I love is learning about new places. And how fun is this that the book takes place in Whittier Alaska. A town of about 220 people. A town nicknamed a “town under one roof”. The Begich towers condominium is where most of the town is housed. It is actually quite fascinating. I also loved that the story was clean, well written, and had a HEA. The love story between Phoebe and Aldus was sweet. When he first tells her he loves her it feels rushed. Phoebe in the story agrees. To go from misunderstanding to misunderstanding and then have attraction I can totally get behind and perhaps have some real feelings for each other. I would have liked to see them spend some more time together. And as much as I did enjoy the story I found that the medical situations that were presented seemed too unbelievable for me. I won’t go into details of why I was put off by them but I was. Other than that I did enjoy reading about a small town that had to find a way to survive.
This is a really nice story about a small town in Alaska called Whittier. The citizens are all so interesting they all have their stories to share and some have big secrets to keep. I enjoyed getting to know Phoebe, a New York resident that is getting ready to take her final exam to be a Doctor in plastic surgery. When she arrives in Whittier she can't believe all the weird things that take place there or some the eccentric people she meets. The longer she stays the more she wonders if she's the one that is weird or just naive. This book has some characters that I enjoyed so much I wouldn't mind if this was a first in a series. I'm looking forward to reading more books of Ms. Lansbury. I think I received this book for free from Bookbub or a giveaway. I am leaving a review because I enjoyed it and wanted to share my own honest opinion.
Loved everything about it. Lots of drama in the small town of Whittier, Alaska. Phoebe, a woman that needed to pass the final test to be a full-fledged doctor. She had to go there because her Aunt Betts died so Phoebe had to arrange her funeral. Aunt Betts had been the Mayor. Half the people loved her aunt and the other half was glad she was gone. Phoebe met Aldus, the new mayor, and hated him on sight and told him exactly how and why she felt the way she did. Once she discovered the things her aunt had let happen, she knew she had misjudged Aldus. They shared a few moments of passion. Lots of very interesting characters kept the story moving along at a good pace. I urge you to read Under the Same Roof by M.K. Lansbury.
I never thought I would want to visit Alaska because I don't like the cold. Living in Canada, I have to put up with it. This book makes me want to visit Whittier, the 'town under one roof' where most of the townspeople live in a large building that houses the community.
Phoebe, a doctor studying for her board exams, is a native New Yorker who came to Whittier to bury her aunt. Aldus is the newly-elected mayor of the town, trying to save his community from bankruptcy. Phoebe has the job offer of her dreams in a New York practice run by her friend and mentor, so she can't stay in Whittier. Aldus does not want to leave Whittier again after his absence for college in a big city. Can these two people ever live in the 'town under one roof' together?
I received an ARC of this book from the author, M.K. Lansbury, and this is my voluntary and honest review. I enjoyed reading this book. The setting in Whittier, Alaska is unique. I especially liked the relationship that Phoebe, a young doctor visiting from New York, and Aldus, the new mayor of the town, progresses. They fall in love but both of their careers have just started. When it is time for Phoebe to return home, they hate to part. You will have to read the book to find out if their relationship blossoms or ends. I highly recommend this book and all works by this talented author.
Absolutely brilliant. Set in a small town, Under the Same Roof brought out the aspirations of people and how sometimes the decisions that we make are actually superficial and it totally differs from what we actually want. There was a point that I actually had to try very hard to control the tears threatening to pour. All the characters that were centred except the protagonist enhanced the plot to a great deal. It made us aware of how different people deal with adversities in their own way which makes it even more special.
I loved this book! The story takes place over a few short days but a lot happens in that time. Life decisions, life changes, life discoveries... The characters each have their own quirks, so while there are many of them, they were easy to follow. The emotional range of the story runs that gamut: love, hate, embarrassment, anger, deception, humor, revenge, and so on. The author packs a big punch in less than 200 pages. Wow!
Nice book. In this book you'll learn a lot about Whittier, Alaska. Phoebe, a woman who's just shy of being a doctor, heads to this town to settle her aunt's affairs. She butts heads with the new mayor big time, yet she's attracted to him. She helps in a medical emergency and more. She falls in love with the town and its people yet...
It does have a few minor swear words.
I received this as an advanced copy and this is my voluntary and honest review.
A small town living under the same roof out of necessity with several people who live in cabins around it makes a good story. This book is different and I read it because of curiosity at first. Each important person to the story was literally identified with a small descriptive background. The secrets and dislikes came to surface and how they were resolved is to be read. I liked the book. I voluntarily read this give away and give it my honest review.
This story is set Whittier Alaska. Phoebe is soon to take her final exam toward getting her into becoming a doctor of plastic surgery. She receives a phone call letting her know her aunt in Whittier passed away. This is really a fun adventure where she saves two lives, falls in love and realizes she would rather be General medical Doctor. I really enjoyed the characters brought forth and tell you if is time well spent
It has been a long time since I have read a book as good as this one. The author's writing was smooth and delightful. The story was not like anything I have ever read so it really held my interest. There were several twists and turns which enhanced the storyline. This is this author's first full length novel and it was an excellent debut! I can't wait to read her next one.
The characters were well done––their voices different when they spoke. The townspeople's relationships were wonderful to experience. The descriptions were enough to envision things but not so much to bog down the story. Some of the twists were expected, but there were also surprises.
It was really well done. I'm so glad I got the chance to read this story!
What a sweet, quick read. I loved learning about this unique Alaskan town, Whittier. I ended up researching it when I finished and enjoyed seeing pictures to put with the story. Was a joy to read just a truly wonderful story without all the trappings of violence, sex, and evil intentions. If you just want to read s story for the joy of it...this is for you!
She’s a medical student ready to take her final exam for being a plastic surgeon. Her Aunt dies in Alaska and she has to go and settle her affairs. The town is angry at her Aunt, she bankrupted the town. She meets the new mayor and there’s an instant attraction. Will she go back to NYC.
Small towns and communities can be so special; Filled with individual, yet every different people. It also provides a wonderful please for self searching and awareness. And occasionally you can find what you weren't even aware you were searching for. Very delightful read!
Not bad. It took a little bit to get into it, I actually stopped reading it for a few days before picking it back up, but the romance was cute and fairly believable. The characters had more depth and layers than I expected after reading the start, so that was a bonus too. Intriguing locale.
I loved the setting of the story, Whittier, Alaska. I was so fascinated by the whole town living in one building that I looked up the town to confirm that is true. The hero's change from hostility to love was a little too quick, but otherwise this was a lovely clean romance.
Phoebe doesn't begin to understand what she will find in a small town in Alaska when she goes for her Aunt's funeral. There are many problems & love? This is a very good story I enjoyed.
Interesting idea of a while town living in one huge building. I was more than sceptical at the beginning, but the characters of the town are friendly, for the most part, and I came to appreciate it.
I loved getting to learn about Whittier Alaska!!! It was very interesting and made me google the town. We have a city girl gong to an extremely small town in Alaska. Things between her and the mayor start off very bumpy but will that change the longer she stays? I was saddened but some things we found out about the past mayor - heartache. The ending was so very good - glad to see history didn't repeat itself.
