RED RIVER RIFLES, from Amazon bestselling author Dorothy Wiley, continues the highly-acclaimed Wyllie family saga. Kicking off her new Wilderness Dawning--the Texas Wyllie Brothers Series, this remarkable novel is set in a time and place when life was tough. And love had to be even tougher.
In 1818, the bravest of the brave settled a narrow strip of land along the Red River in Texas. A place where death and life held equal strongholds--the new leading edge of the West was an exceedingly dangerous place. For Samuel Wyllie, his family's land south of the Red River at Pecan Point was a nearly sacred place, as beautiful as heaven must be. He has big plans for the future and will do what it takes to carve a new life out of the wilderness.
Louisa Pate and her young brother Adam, new arrivals in the settlement, are subjected to the tyranny of a cruel father. He intends to marry her off for profit and power to a brash filibuster who plans to challenge the Spanish for control of Texas. She also faces a frontier teeming with Indians, raw wilderness, deadly quicksand, and men who would use her for their own gain. Denied any chance for happiness, she is determined to survive and protect her little brother. And she will do what she must for Adam's sake, even enter into a loveless marriage.
But even on this lonely frontier, Louisa is not truly alone. Time and again, Samuel boldly stands between her and disaster. The vastness of Texas is not big enough to hold his courage or his love. Yet love is not easily won and life in the West challenges them both. Help comes in the form of a unique trapper named Old Bill, a solitary, spirit-like Caddo brave named Kuukuh, and Samuel's father and three brothers.
A gritty western, a love story, and a gripping tale of the first daring settlers of Texas, Wiley's storytelling is stronger than ever. This well-researched story of the frontier and the pursuit of the American dream is a clean, yet romantic historical set against the stunning backdrop of the Province of Texas.

In Red River Rifles, Dorothy Wiley has once again left me on the edge of my seat! Her amazing ability to draw us into the lives and history of the settlers of our great nation - through drama, love and peril - has resulted in one of her most heart-warming and suspense-filled works yet!
Wow...what a beautifully written historical western romance. I enjoyed it thoroughly from beginning to the end. The characters, the romance and the well researched historical background, kept my interest throughout and hated to see it end. Going to be hard to wait for the next novel in this wonderful new series. Highly recommend. 5 stars, should be more. JudyE
This is a WOW book! There are factual historical events; writings of actual ancestry; and, touching romance with the now grown children of Stephen Wyllie, our hero from the first series. From the very beginning in the American Wilderness Series, Stephen was the young family man that convinced his brothers to join him in the adventure of a lifetime. It took months and months but the family traveled hundreds of miles from the New England area to the new west in Kentucky.
Stephen’s oldest son, Samuel, is now 21, heads up the Red River Cattle Company and along with his brothers, is ready to fight off Indians, the Spanish Military and any other men who try to take the ranch as they have now settled in Texas. After one such battle with Indians, Samuel hears a plea for help and finds a young woman and small boy. Louisa and her brother, Adam, have survived their own Indian raid. The story of survival, friendship and Kuukuh, a Caddo Indian brave, is a book you won’t want to put down. I loved it and look forward to the next book in the series.
This is, without question, Wiley's best work yet. It is an epic adventure, a touching love story, and a legendary tale of the early Texas frontier. She breathes life into memorable heroes struggling to survive in a savage new land where life is cheap and bloodshed is common. Based, in part, on the lives of real Texans, the Wyllie family meets danger head on again and again without ever losing their integrity. Despite brutal elements, dangerous adversaries, and tribes out for revenge, love blossoms and endures. Beautifully researched, and meticulously crafted, Dorothy Wiley will astonish you with this memorable novel.
Ms. Wiley proves herself again as one of my favorite authors of historical romance writing another book set in my favorite period in history, the settling of the West. Another five star read that held my interest from the first page to the last and I didn't want to put it down. The prologue set the stage of what was to come and it was spot on in drawing me into the story . Red River Rifles has adventures, misfortune, Indian attacks and support, the need to defend oneself and one's family, lots of weapons and fighting, camaraderie, family and friends and high points and low points in their lives. The descriptions of the lands, the river, the homes and outbuildings, the animals, the settlement and their dreams made me feel like I was there in the Province of Texas.
This story picks up where the last book left off with Stephen Wyllie and his four sons leaving family behind in Kentucky to settle further in the West. The time period is in the early 1800's. This time we're in Texas and get to know more about Stephen and his family and what they along with Baldy and his wife, Melly, need to deal with as they settle into their new lives. The affection between them was apparent and they were open to include anyone else who they considered in need or a friend. But don't cross them! There was an enemy in Louisa and Adam's father, the children who they took in and gave jobs to so they didn't have to go back to their father who was cruel to them in many ways. Their father aligned himself with Long, another enemy, who had visions of being the President of Texas and fighting the Spanish to do so. Louisa and Adam were seamlessly woven into the story and I could feel how they finally felt whole when shown love and friendship and also having food and clothing at their disposal. This is Samuel, Stephen's oldest son, and Louisa's story and it was powerful in its telling.
The story flowed nicely and we got to know the characters better a little at a time since there was a depth to all of them. There were several happily ever afters and nice closure with the epilogue but enough loose ends that left me wanting more. Since there are three more sons and Adam I hope each will get their own story. It was nice that the other Wyllie relatives were mentioned throughout and I love the cover of the book. I enjoyed the Facts and Inspirations in the back of the book as well as the list of the characters which included a short description.
From start to finish this is another great book. The characters in each book comes alive. The Wyllie family has struggled through loss but the love and dedication they had for each other is brought forth in each book. Full of Adventure and suspense. Couldn't put it down. Looking forward to the next adventure.
I couldn't sleep. I had to finish. It was so exciting. Danger was everywhere. From indians, cougar, awful parent, even misguided men. One adventure after another. I love it. The Wiley new generation is just as honorable as their father and uncles.
Dorothy Wiley has a talent for drawing readers into the worlds she creates. I’m an Australian who has never been to America, but after a few chapters I felt right at home in pioneering Texas! Red River Rifles is well-researched with authentic characters and vivid settings. The story is fast-paced with a great blend of adventure, romance and history, combined with a certain gritty realism. It does not shy away from the tremendous difficulties and hardships faced by these early settler families, especially the women. But it also shows their strength and resilience as they build homes and carve out livelihoods in an unforgiving wilderness. Exciting and entertaining ‒ five stars.
I see definite potential in this book, but for me it isn't quite up to what I consider average acceptable reading. The prologue was a long, boring slog and totally turned me off. Then things felt like they kept slipping into info dumps. A few scenes that could have been intense action scenes were so broken by background info and side details that they totally fizzled. Finally, the female MC character didn't seem quite right. I feel like she should have had more lingering issues from her lifetime of abuse apparent in the first half.
This was an amazing book filled with love, hate, pride, fear, hope and honor! This was definitely a wild time in our history and it was a difficult period with hostilities from one's own family, the natives, Mexicans, Spanish, Americans and the wildlife!! Who could you trust? Dorothy is an incredible story teller and although this book is mild in the sexual context, it is writhed with danger only the untamed and unpoliced West could experience!
I loved this book. As I read each one of these stories I am drawn further back in time and living in the wild frontier of Texas. Samuel and Louisa's story continues my love of the Willey family. Part of me wants them to return to Kentucky to a less volitive environment and another part wants to see them fight for a new life in their taming of Texas. You will love this story about their struggle. Enjoy!
I was hooked on the very first book in this family series with Steve and Jane, and the rest of the Wiley brothers. Now I'm hooked on the second generation, I have all the issues and each one is full of historical facts and fiction that I love. How I wish Steven Sr., would have a love interest it's been sixteen years and he's got to be lonely! Looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
A continuation of the previous series, where Stephen Wylie and his sons leave Kentucky and travel to a new life in Texas. Samuel, the eldest son, rescued Louisa and her brother Adam from quicksand and so behind another romance.
The story shows the hardships the first settlers to Texas had. Indians, Spanish government and staying alive by use of instinct and their own wits.
This is the first book I think I've read from the author. It is very good and a clean book as well. It shows the hard life of those settling the West. It wasn't for the faint of heart. The pioneers faced dangers practically every day. They had to be resourceful and tough. I really enjoyed Samuel and Louisa's story! I was rooting and cheering for them. If you like clean historical western themed stories then I suggest this one and the rest of the series! Enjoy!
Another excellent story by Dorothy Wiley about the Wiley family and their exodus into Texas when times were very challenging and dangerous. Dorothy weaves a great story building on facts known about the times and her ancestors. I love her writing style and her creative imagination. Thanks for another great read Dorothy Wiley.
This is a novel based during the early days of Texas before it became a state. There is quite a bit of violence so not a story for those who avoid violence. It features a tough young lady who experienced a great deal of abuse before falling in love with one of her heroes. A well written and researched novel to bring history to life.
A story about the Wyllie family . A strong family building a new home in the wilderness. Their hard working and God fearing . They fight to keep what's there's . They learn that not all men are good and learn not all men are bad. This is a story that grabs your right from the start.
Another well written western story about how the US grew by the strength and guts of the early settlers. Life was so dangerous. Hardly a day goes by without a tragedy of some sort. The love story of Samuel and Louisa is one of survival and endurance. Loving the series.
Excellent start to a new series. It is good to read about the Wyllie family's next generation. Hope more stories are in the future. Love how this family follows the new U.S. development with family ties, love for each other and the Lord. Highly recommended.
Another great book in a great series. These books grab me from the beginning and hold my attention. I loved Louisa and Samuel's story and I'm looking forward to more books in the series.
Dorothy Wiley writes with honest and integrity in all her books, facts and just enough of everything else to keep you reading! Red River Rifles is no different! Good read!
I expected the violence and rough life of early Texans but their spirit always amazes me. An excellently written historical story, I was surprised to hear it was based on actual people's lives, made it more endearing.
Guns, romance, history, war, medicine, indians. Significant western history of the Lousinia Purchase and the very brave people who lived and fought for not only the lives of their family but to hold on to their land. I loved this rendering.
Knowing how to survive without any thing takes great character and endurace.. some of their efforts were unbelieveabe. Thanks for clarifying some of the use of fireplace utinsules. Great story
Author Dorothy Wiley mixes fiction and history to wet your appetite for more information about those who settled the frontier. Her books never disappoint with plenty of drama as well as the hardships endured by early pioneers.
I've loved everyone of Dorothy Wiley's books that I've read. After many of them being situated in Kentucky; this part of the family has moved on to Texas. I like that it is based on the author's husband's ancestors.
I love reading Dorothy's stories she writes about them in a way that makes you feel like you are there living the story yourself, when I start a new book I can hardly put it down till I've read the whole story! Please keep writing these true to life stories!:
Family & faith with a good dose of the reality of the times. Very much enjoyed the it, the writing stellar and the characters very well drawn. Will read more of her books/series. Great western.
