Back when my oldest (now 22) was not quite 10, we were just beginning to explore the joys of fantasy and science fiction. Oh, we'd done Narnia, but we were learning that there were more options. A blogger friend had signed on to review a children's science fiction book, but she realized she wasn't going to be able to get it reviewed. So, she asked if I'd take over. Since I was constantly on the lookout for new books for my voracious readers, I gladly said yes, and my daughter and I read it together.

Taken by Brock Eastman had us hooked immediately! I wish I'd had a recorder running so I could remember all of the conversation we had about Taken. It was unlike anything we'd read together before. And even though it was written with children in mind, I found myself as engaged in the story as my daughter was.

The setting is a futuristic world where humanity has spread out across the stars and their origin and history has been lost. Elliot and Laura Wikk are archaeologists working to uncover some of that lost history. As the series continues, readers discover just what caused that history to be lost and what has instigated the efforts to regain it, but from the first chapter it is obvious that not all is as it seems. Just as the Wikks are about to head to a new site, Elliot and Laura are captured by a strange man and his soldiers. Their four children are left with a packed spaceship, coordinates for the family's intended destination, and a compelling need to rescue their parents from this mysterious captain.

It is quickly evident that part of the quest involves a search for something more than just history, and this is where my daughter and I had amazing conversations. As a very young Christian, she was picking up on the hints of what this futuristic humanity had lost: a connection to God and His truth.

When the final installment in the five-book The Quest for Truth series, Hope released, I decided to go back and reread the whole series before I picked up Hope. As I reread, I was reminded just how much I enjoyed the story, even as an adult reading middle school books. When I finally finished the first four books and was ready to dive into Hope, I was definitely not disappointed.

There was a lot to pack into this final installment of the series. Mysteries about characters, logistics of the quest, the truth about the ultimate destination, and so much more had to fit within these final pages. Somehow, author Brock Eastman pulled all of that off while still delving into additional character development and incorporating the message of Truth throughout.

It's hard to say much about Hope specifically without giving away spoilers from the rest of the series. But I will say that it's worth the ride. It's worth reading Taken, Risk, Unleash, and Tangle in order to enjoy Hope. This is the type of series that can be enjoyed as a read-aloud with the whole family or handed to children to enjoy on their own. The writing is simple enough for middle elementary students, yet captivating enough for high schoolers--and even the parents! This is a series I will be recommending for years to come.

Thanks, Brock, for the great journey! We look forward to taking more journeys with you in the years to come.

Enjoy the Quest!

The final adventure and leg of this journey to discovering the planet of human origin and Truth. It as a good wrap up. We got to see characters change and discover and be challenged by finding and living the Truth. The growth in faith was pretty well done but it was over repeated a bit. There was one chapter towards the end that almost made me cry. While much wrapped up adventure wise, I was left with the question "Why was Earth hidden so seriously if there was nothing left on it to keep it so well hidden?" There is all this build up to get to Earth and finding and using secret codes and keys to start up this one ship because everyone thought there was something important left on the planet. But it didn't feel like what that important thing was was answered. It also felt like it presented questions that were never answered towards the end too. Part of me wonders if there will be a follow up series because of questions like, "Is anyone left on the planet?" was still there. Personally, I was also bugged by two animal attacks that happened but were unprovoked. The animals just attacked making them look mindless, killing machines who wanted to get you which is not true for those two types of animals. Still, it was an adventurous, space-faring serious with lots of futuristic tech but the story had some rough spots.

It's been a journey.

I believe I got the first three books for Christmas in 2012. Then I waited (three years) for book #4 to start the series, thinking it wouldn't be too much longer. Four years later, here we are.

I was going to re-read the series, since I don't remember a whole lot of details, but a friend has most of them, so I didn't do that. I remembered enough. I read a lot of books that are "too young" for me and really enjoy them, but I think it had just been so long that the excitement and buildup was kind of gone. I'm glad for the resolution to the story; to have a wrap-up and an ending. The book is probably a bit longer than it needed to be, but there are some good themes explored over the course of the book.

One thing I want to know - why do Waverly and Declan get characters but Elsie and Kinsley don't? :) It only took me a minute to realize what he did there.

This series would be great for middle schoolers who like science fiction. I already know of a girl I need to load these to.

Wait, this is worth your time.

Sure, a lot of books might be boring but this is different. Any book that mentions God, the scripture or anything else about the Bible is just amazing. SOLA SCRIPTURA, SOLA CRISTO, SOLA FIDE, SOLA GRATIA, but most importantly SOLA DEO GLORIA. DITAT DEUS .

AMAZING!!!!!! Can't believe that the series is finally over. Sad, but what an ending! By far, one of my favorite series of all time. An inticing blend of Sci-Fi and Christian literature that is sure to please the reader. Despite having only a ship crew to work with, this book still delivers more than enough twists and turns in this, the climax of the series! Hoping for maybe another book about the future of their life, but we'll see (:
