An ok book. Several thoughts after reading this book in repeated short spurts over a month's time. The quotations seem to be relevant to the mid-twenith century born generations. More recent generations since 1990 will not recognize the people being quoted or the wisdom or selfishness contained therein. Those quoted from the entertainment, political and literary fields often reveal their own essential narrow selfishness. There are some good quotes, but most call on the reader to have a good background knowledge to "get it." My favorite quote from the book is by Woody Allen: "I can't listen to that much Wagner. I start getting the urge to conquer Poland." In this case you must have a knowledge of who Wagner is, his type of German nationalist music, the composer's own racist attitude, how the music was used/abused by Hitler and the Nazis, the Holocaust especially in Poland and of course how World War II started with Hitler's purposes in full play. Yes that quote gave me a real laugh. Do you "get it?"
