Enjoyable book for a read aloud. Made history come alive—especially for my kids who are distantly related to the William Brewster. I appreciated the honest differentiation between pilgrims/separatists and the people in Jamestown. Good background understanding of why pilgrims left England in pursuit of religious liberty and commitment to be nonviolent. Loved the honest difficulties about living in Plymouth. So many people get pilgrims, puritans, and colonists confused. And while there is overlap in many cases, these are 3 very different groups with 3 very different purposes to coming to America which play out in relation to native Americans differently.
Reason for 3 ⭐️ is simply the writing style. Though enjoyable, it had a hard flow at times and introduced people without understanding who they were. Found myself confused at points. For a children’s book it could have done a bit better at recalling details and connecting dots from chapter to chapter. Also could have done a better job at pointing to the pilgrims hope in Jesus, not just “God”
Overall, great addition to our first few weeks of school when paired with other picture books.
A Christian view point of the Pilgrims and their journey from England to North America. Discusses the decisions, trials and deaths. Appropriate for ages 5 and up.
My girls enjoyed this one, but as the parent reading it aloud it was quite a slog. It was told in a very fact like manner, none of the characters had any depth and it was mostly a book of details.
Very helpful book for Learning about the pilgrims and the religious persecution that bright them to America. Love how accessible it was - very much written in story form. I need to be sure to circle back to it.
