Wall Street Journal bestselling author SJ Scott wanted to be Luke Skywalker when he grew up.

Unfortunately his complete lack of physical grace and introverted mannerism's kept the earth from having their own Jedi Knight to battle the Sith menace.

Steve “SJ” Scott was born and raised in New Jersey. After finishing college with a degree in psychology he knew he needed to further his education or work on his latte making skills.

During a short stint in US Air Force, Scott was able to get his Master’s in business and then moved on to conquer the business world.

Scott then spent a couple of years working for a company not unlike the company depicted in Mike Judge’s film, “Office Space”. After doing his share of “TPS” reports, Scott swore he would never work for anyone but himself.

He spent the next few years making this happen. Making a decent living online and eventually pivoting to writing books, blogging and even podcasting.

Scott has written over 30 books, most of them in the "self-improvement" genre. An area that he is personally passionate about.

His books have been published in 12 different languages. So he is well on his way to world domination. However, in his heart of hearts he knows he will soon have to venture out into the universe and defeat the Sith menace.

A nice quick read—even via audiobook. Nothing that isn’t in other self-help manuals, but a nice review of 53 things you can incorporate into your life to boost the happiness factor. If you are feeling dissatisfied for any reason, may be worth a read to get ideas and try one or more.

Everyone wants to be happy. But how can you increase your happiness? There’s a heap of recent science about this and I’ve read a few other titles in the same area. Steve has listed dozens of links to studies, reports, and videos.
On the other hand, while happiness is challenging to measure, there are a wide range of strategies that can help you increase your overall life satisfaction. In fact, you can boil them down to three simple rules:
Focus on the things that truly matter.
Eliminate (or minimize) what makes you unhappy.
Create habits that help you achieve both these outcomes. (Kindle Locations 143-148).

Happy people are successful people. They have more solid marriages, they have more job and career success. Being unhappy makes it really hard to be productive, you know? Of course you do.
A lot of the suggestions are confirmations of common sense solutions: sleep 8 hours, drink less alcohol, eat healthier food, avoid sugar, avoid time suck activities… He lists nine in the ‘big lever’ section; they will make the most difference.
Reminiscing is one of the later entries and that surprised me. But I suppose it makes sense. If you spend money on a holiday you can only go on it once, but then if you watch the videos, or look at the scrapbook or photo album, you kind of get to repeat the experience.
And anticipation; looking forward to something enhances the experience. [so that’s why a date night works]
Do not vent - this one goes against accepted wisdom.
So when studies show that venting by punching a pillow increases, rather than decreases, levels of anger, the reason is clear: those people are refocusing the brain’s attention on angry thoughts and angry actions, causing even more anger. (Kindle Locations 3096-3097).

Angry people get angrier… I can see that.
A lot of these things have double bonuses; getting enough sleep, or exercising, or practising meditation or yoga all have benefits in more than one area.
Of course Steve is the habit guru; he’s written a heap of previous titles about habits, S.M.A.R.T. goals, mindfulness, and getting things done. This volume kind of combines them. Another double up for the win.
It’s all presented in an easy to read format, backed up by links to further references and with quotes from other works on the subjects. And downloads for a gratitude journal.
As I discussed in the introduction, people often say they want to be happy, but their behavior and lifestyle are at odds with this desired outcome. So the biggest “secret” to becoming a happier human is to make sure your actions are in alignment with your happiness goals. (Kindle Locations 3748-3750).

Pick one and try it. Then when you’ve got that down, pick another one.

I am on his mailing list and got this copy for free. Which I have to say, made me happy.

I thought this was a very good overview of what causes us to feel more or less happy, along with many practical suggestions for developing habits that will make us happier. While many of the general suggestions in this book will be familiar to anyone who reads much positive psychology or self-help, I still learned some worthwhile new tips. I particularly appreciated the discussion of the eight reasons people struggle with unhappiness, and the suggestions of bad habits to eliminate.

One of the things that set this book apart is that it takes advantage of the e-book format to include many links to relevant studies and additional tools and resources. I loved being able to just click a link to read more about some of the research that was cited.

As a bonus, at the end of the book, you will find an opportunity to sign up for the author’s mailing list and download a PDF of The 90-Day Gratitude Journal, which I highly recommend. It will help you build one of the happiness habits discussed in Happier Human.

The version I reviewed had a few proofreading errors, but not too many, and none that interfered with my understanding of the text. I found the book logically organized and easy to understand.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in becoming happier.

I was given a free copy of this book by one of the authors and volunteered to provide an honest review.

Put simply, this book will make you happier.

It's in the title- it's science-backed, as opposed to being backed by hopeful thinking or because it's some unfounded trend. These are tangible strides you can make to address various areas in your life that will make you happier.

I'm not sure what kind of person I am but this is exactly how I need to receive this kind of helpful guidance and easily administer it into my life.

S.J. Scott also writes in a way that doesn't have fluff or over-sensationalized anecdotes or bullshit stories like you find in many "self-help" style books. The kind of look into their lives that make you kind of not want the author to succeed. Sorry, that's maybe just me.

Anyways, great, helpful book and I will aim to, as directed, grab one or two of the 53 habits at a time and try to practice them in areas that I'd like to improve.

This wasn’t an earth shattering book but I did learn some new tidbits. Sugar, for instance, is correlated with depression. Who knew?

Some changes I’ll be ensuring I stick to: (1) using my standing desk at work always; (2) practicing gratitude; and (3) trying harder to eliminate complaining from my life.

While I was already working on some of these things, this will be the year I really make sure I stick to these all year.

Also, I appreciated the conversational questions the author provided in one of his tips - regarding talking to people about important things in lieu of just gossiping or engaging in small talk.

I really liked this book. Listened to an audiobook and made some notes that I am sharing with colleagues at work. A super useful list of habits, that most of I already intuitively implemented, so will be focusing on those that can further improve my well-being. Very intuitive, and science-backed - I highly recommend checking it out. It's short, you get a habit, you get short reasoning behind it and then useful links to further reading or studies. At the end it gives advice on how to create new habits, because it's a big challenge, and the tips are something I hear before but this only means they are useful. Great little book!

All the common happiness tips in one book.

This seemed to contain all the happiness tips I have encountered before condensed in one book. There were a few I was not familiar with which I found useful. There were also plenty of links to further reading on happiness.

I got the audible book but I had to get the physical book to highlight and make notes on it. It has great bits of advice and good writing prompts. Some of the information gets very repetitive though.

This is the type of book that I would like a physical copy of to reference and remind myself of the truths that I need to face and the changes I need to make to be happier. The audio book is read in a very monotone which was unexpected from a book trying to teach happiness.

Nothing new. All recycled ideas. One suggestion was to delete all social media then the next suggestion is to post your new habits on social media. Too many conflicting ideas.

I've read other books on the topic, so there was not new here. But I wasn't a big fan of the way the information was presented and laid out. This book is okay if you are not already familiar with the science on what makes people happier.
