Crucial Questions

Does God Exist?

Rate this book
Many people believe in God, but is it possible to prove that He exists? Or must we simply take a leap of faith? In this booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul shows that we don’t have to give up our intellect in order to believe. In fact, logic and reason clearly demonstrate that God exists, and no one has an excuse for their unbelief. Dr. Sproul rebuts common arguments from atheists, exposing the inconsistency and illogical nature of denying the existence of God. The Crucial Questions booklet series by Dr. R.C. Sproul offers succinct answers to important questions often asked by Christians and thoughtful inquirers.

There was a lot to chew on. It’s been almost a year since I started getting into Christian Apologetics, and this book covers a lot of introductory Christian Apologetics relating to God’s existence. Very much appreciated. It’s easy to read through.

Thoughtful

"The real reason that anyone denies the existence of God is simply this: that we too are naked and we know it."
Another great question tackled by R.C, just love the way he presents the answer. This was definitely not a quick read as they was so much to think and ponder on.

I guess there are many apologetical books that I've read, but there are none that I remember enjoying as much as I've enjoyed this one. Though a small e-book, its nevertheless very deep and hence can be difficult to read and process. Specially the parts that deal with the philosophical explanations. Sproul systematically proceeds to explain everything. It destroys every atheistic argument, and at the same time increases your faith and assurance in the existence of a holy, omnipotent, omniscient heavenly Father and King of the universe.

Nicely articulated, but...

This is the first book that I have read of R.C. Sproul, and I find his insights enlightening, well-articulated, and highly intellectual. However, he lacks many references and favors to reference scripture from the Bible over his other claims. His style of quoting many of the people he speaks of leaves the reader to either take his word for it or go and do the research to find a matching quote that is missing proper essential quotation marks while reading. Are these paraphrases or exact quotes? The reader can only assume.
He half-properly quoted an astrophysicist early on in the book near the end of Chapter 4, but made no mention of his name, only calling him or her a "prominent astrophysicist."
Lastly, in astrophysics and cosmology, when the term "nothing" is used to describe what there was before the Big Bang, the word "nothing" refers to a lack of matter. In the place of matter where there is none, there is pure energy at the singularity. Einstein revealed to the world that energy and matter are the same things through his simple equation e=mc2. However, before the Big Bang, matter did not exist, so the equation for energy was 100%. Simply e=itself. It was the event itself that later formed Hydrogen, Helium, and Lithium to form the first stars. Later these first stars collapsed under their own immense pressure and would explode into a supernova event where the other 91 natural elements would form. With secondary clouds of this newly formed gas and dust just floating around in space, it would then start to clump together again to form stars as we know more like our own Sun. Simultaneously, planets would compete for this gas and dust formation and form a solar system.
All of this is evident in the night sky. We can see the CMB of the first 380,000 years of the Big Bang. We look out and zoom back; we see all the rest of history frozen in time through the information of what we call light. All of this light gives us data through spectral analysis and tells us what elements are floating around in space and what the stars are made of.
R.C. never mentioned any of this. Nor did he say the problem with a universe built in 6 days and Earth supposedly only 6,000 years old as St Augustine of Hippo calculated, by the way, according to answersingenesis .org.

The problem with a 6,000-year-old Earth that was created in 1 of the six days early on, is that it's not a possibility according to the laws of nature. And as one would undoubtedly retort this by saying, "nothing is impossible with God," Luke 1:37, the idea itself however, of how God did it in a day also can't be dismissed.
If a person understands quantum physics or even a basic understanding of the 4th dimension of time and how it equates, if one were able to articulate this to an audience without the scientific jargon, then one could explain these concepts about creation under the additional scripture "for the Lord one day is the same as 1000 years and 1000 years is the same as a day” 2 Peter 3:8. However, one also has to overlook this statement as a literal one and instead a general clue.
Logically one has to ask the begging question of who's six days were the Universe created if the earth did not have spin year, because it did not exist before the first day?
This still does not account for the 6000-year-old Earth today. Science wins this one based on evidence of element decay rates found in material all over Earth, the moon, and here's the kicker, why can we look up into the night sky and see far beyond 6000 lightyears? Our own Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 lightyears across, and we can see beyond that. In fact, we can see light that is 43 billion lightyears away in all directions from light that is 13.8 billion old. The reason light is farther away than 13.8 billion lightyears time is simply because of the expansion of the universe confirmed in the 1920s by Edwin Hubble, now known as Hubble's Law and Hubble's Constant.
R.C. also failed to mention that the Big Bang Theory was coined by a Catholic priest named Georges Lemaître before Edwin Hubble confirming the theory. It was later proven again by accident on May 20, 1964, when American radio astronomers Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias discovered the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). This ancient light began saturating the universe 380,000 years after its creation.

Physics, as we know it today, is exact and well understood. A 6000-year-old earth topic cannot be ignored when discussing a Creator's existence based on past claims already made. We know the Earth is not flat today, and we also know the age of the universe is definitely 13.8 billion years old.
As St. Augustine of Hippo once said in his book Christian Humanism, "rhetoric is used to give conviction to both truth and falsehood,” why should truth “stand unarmed in the fight against falsehood." In other words, Christians need to strengthen their arguments in a world better prepared for debate. Apologists take note.
Book gets 4 stars regardless. R.C. takes on a subject most Christians run from. He was obviously very well educated and passionate about his beliefs. I have respect for a person like that.

In this new book in R.C. Sproul’s helpful Crucial Questions series (which are free in the Kindle edition), he looks at the philosophical arguments for and against the existence of God. He writes that the approach that has become the overwhelming majority view within Reformed theology is known as presuppositional apologetics. He tells us that the presuppositional view says that in order to arrive at the conclusion that God exists and to prove His existence, one must start with the primary premise of the existence of God.
The author writes that the reality of the existence of God is the single most important premise in the building of one’s life and worldview. However, if we can prove without a doubt that the eternal God of the universe exists, that means that all people will be held accountable for how they live. Therefore, one reason that people want to get rid of the idea of God is to be free from guilt and accountability.
The author looks at four basic possibilities for explaining reality as we encounter it:
1. Our experience of reality is itself an illusion.
2. Reality as we encounter it is self-created.
3. The reality we encounter is self-existent.
4. Reality is created ultimately by something that is self-existent.
The author writes that in the history of philosophy and theoretical thought, the systems related to the arguments for and against the existence of God tend to range between two polar extremes. On one side is theism, and on the other side is nihilism.
The author takes us through each of the four possibilities for explaining reality. As he does this, he shares the ideas of philosophers such as Descartes, Kant, Sartre, Nietzsche, Marx, Feuerbach, Mill, and Camus. Then he asks what the relationship is between the god of the philosophers and the God of the Bible.
He writes that the doctrine of creation teaches that there is a self-existent, eternal being who possesses the power of motion and has the ability to move that which is not moving. He goes on to write that the reality of God cannot be determined on the basis of what people want to be true, but instead, that God has manifested Himself clearly to every human being.
I am not well-versed in philosophy, but the author, as he was known for, takes these difficult arguments and makes them understandable for the layperson.

This book in R.C. Sproul's "Crucial Questions" series is also the deepest one that I've read so far, as it goes into great depth about what famous philosophers and scholars have said, so I found myself reading a lot about Rene Descartes, Friederich Nietsche, Karl Marx and others. Marx, for example stated once that religion was just something believers created to escape from the futility of life.

While no one can prove that God exists, this book made some really good points, many of which I was familiar with, such as the whole idea that it feels foolish to think that the universe came out of nothing ("What caused the big bang?" he asked at one point) and he also points out how the exact opposite of religion is nihilism.

As Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 15, "If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied".

I did find myself reading this more slowly than previous books I have read in this series, because there was more to take in, but it was a fascinating read.

RC Sproul takes on the challenge of dissecting the question of God’s existence in a way I believe displays his intentionality for the lay person to understand.
This short booklet journeys through 4 basic possibilities in answering this question.

A few downside to this booklet includes Sproul’s omission of providing substantial references outside of his reference of passages from scripture. For example, he refers to a popular astrophysicist but makes no mention of said person’s name. Other times he spoke using other’s thoughts and words but the reader may not be able to distinguish if what he wrote was a direct quote or not unless they go ahead and search it up for themselves.

Overall, this is one booklet that’s worth a reread as there is a lot to consider within it and it worth chewing through especially if it’s use as a springboard into further research!

Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable experience!

Amazing, logically thought out treatise on understanding the existence of God. Sproul takes the time to introduce logic and how atheist, agnostic, and theist thinkers have used it over the centuries to answer this question. He points out the logical falsehoods in philosophical discourse on this question. This is a must read for anyone within the debate on the answer to this question. The beauty of this tiny book is that Sproul doesn't necessarily come out and just say "yes" to the question. Instead, he logically dissects the arguments and leads the reader to make their own conclusion while simply stating his belief. Well done and a must for any apologetic library.

The existence of the God of the Bible is a major topic of debate in today’s postmodern world. But is there actual proof of God’s existence or is it a leap of faith? Using philosophical arguments from across the centuries, explore the question ‘Does God exist?’ with R.C. Sproul. Sproul uses clear language to explore the concepts of philosophers like Kant and Sartre, though this book is a bit weightier and more complex than most of the Crucial Questions Series. Still, if you are a person searching for the reason behind belief in God or a Christian who wants to explore the more philosophical arguments for the existence of God, this is a good steppingstone into a difficult topic.

This book was completely different from what I thought it would be. I thought it was going to be a simple yes or no because of XYZ from the Bible. But no. This was philosophical, intellectual, and brought about so many references from others throughout history. I learned new information about the world, the Bible, and God himself. I also questioned my world view. And while it's not a simple yes or no question, you might be able to figure it out from reading this book.

I gave 3 stars because some parts were repetitive and boring. I did have to look up a lot of vocabulary but I don't mind doing that.

The Four classic Apologetics

He presents clearly the four ideologies of origin & existence. He also clearly explains the falacies of the first three & the attempt to escape the reality that is deeply interwoven into each human being & why so many choose the three over the Judeo-Christian origen of all that exists.

My faith is strengthened. Truly an excellent answer provided. Although I do sense some kind of incompleteness, if Sproul were alive and answered the minor lingering questions I have in mind (of which is answered by the book of which I cannot comprehend completely), I would be a very foolish being that once questioned such existence of a omnipotent and omniscient God.

Simple apologetics book

This is a Christian apologetics book, intended to argue that God truly exist. The argument used here was simple, for the target of this book for ordinary people. The arguments explained according to Kant philosophy of creation.

Excellent

Dr. Sproul's approach to proof of God's existence shows apologetics at its best. I'm constantly amazed by not only his knowledge of scripture but if philosophy and the writings of ancient philosophers.

So thankful for RC Sproul

R.C. Sproul gives a succinct, philosophical and theological defense for the existence of God. He ends at the heart of the matter and why it is people reject the existence of God. I am always refreshed when I read something from Sproul.

This one went a little deeper than most of the Crucial Questions series. I read it with the kids and we talked about some of the different philosophies out there and the bias behind them. Though initially a bit over their heads, it provided some good opportunities for question and discussion.
