Another good novel by John Reinhard Dizon. I have read many stories by the author and have enjoyed all of them along with this one. I liked this one because it gave me lots of background information about American history specially the Native American ones. Lots of mystical stuff too which was captivating. Must read story for every American. Well written book.

This is what happens when Amazon publishes an amateur. This book lacks editing. It seems there wasn't any in the first place. Though I agree that one's taste determines his or her feelings regarding a novel, this one was filled with typos, subplots that appeared as afterthoughts, characters basically stereotyped (particularly the indigenous), unaccountable narrative changes.... I could go on but I imagine you've got my gist. As a former English lit prof and as an author, I have read some astounding books I didn't like, but had to admire. Not this one. And to make it worse, Dizon decided at the end to tell me all about his other 30 unpublished or self published books. With his apparent ego, I doubt anyone one edit for him.

Having read a couple of this author's works in the past, I was once again amazed at the diversity of John Reinhard Dizon's writing talent. No two of his books are alike and he has the remarkable knack of being 'at home' with each and every one of the subjects covered in his novels.
Penny Flame is the great, great grandmother of leading character Moneen(Mony) Murphy. Aided by her boyfriend Tommy, Mony is researching an alleged war crime committed by the US Army during the Indian Wars of the 19th century.

When she comes across 'The legend of Penny Flame,' Mony's quest becomes personal as she embarks on a search for the truth about what happened when Penny disappeared in the area of the eerily named Superstition Mountain. What follows is a truly epic tale that seamlessly switches the action between the Indian Wars and the current day. Something, or someone, doesn't want Mony to learn the truth, made even more lurid when she discovers the unsubstantiated memoir of notorious gunslinger, Pennington, who admits to being the killer of Penny's parents, and assisting in the slaughter of many white settlers, working together with Chief Death Star and his band of renegade Apache Indians.
Gradually, we learn how Penny Flame ended up living among the Puma Indians, becoming known as 'The White Witch.'
This is a superbly sweeping epic which kept me enthralled throughout. The truly explosive ending, when the forces of good, both Native American and the Christian Church, finally confront the evil that resides within Superstition Mountain, eventually reveals the truth behind what happened to Penny Flame, and explains what happened to the US Army detachment under the command of Captain Michael Marion, the source of the war crime allegations. Brilliant! Well done, Mr. Dizon, another literary triumph!

review of Penny Flame a Novel of Apache Ward by John Dixon

This was a very interesting story that kept me reading into the night it was a little bit disturbing to hear of things that happened in that period of time that nobody likes to acknowledge happened and a healthy dose of the supernatural to liven things up great cast of characters and surprises at every turn a good read

Another great novel by John Dizon. When Moneen Murphy known as Mony has to write a paper she decides to travel to the Phoenix area with her boyfriend Tommy and that is when the epic adventure begins. The reader is taken back in time to the old west as The great, great grandmother of Mony's story is told. Penelope (Penny) Flame was coming west as a young child when her parents were killed. Taken in by Mormons Penny's life doesn't improve, instead she has to run away from an abusive adoptive father who also wants to make her his wife. This story also contains supernatural and spiritual references along with good vs evil. The story is compelling, well written and a must read!
