Enhanced with brilliant illustrations, offers an in-depth look at Flower Fairies through a review of what they look like, the special clothes they wear, the different jobs they do, and the fun games they play when they have time off from watching their flowers.
Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings. As a child she was influenced by the works of the illustrator Kate Greenaway, whom she assiduously copied in her formative years. Her principal influence, however, was the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Very cute book. I would use it as one of many fairytales to read to students so that if I have them do an assignment that deals with fairytale books they can get their creative minds thinking.
This is my all time favorite of the Flower Fairies books. It was what started my love for them. Supposedly the book cover glittered when a flower fairy was near so my sister and I would wander about my grandmother's garden trying to find them! Of course now we know that glittered whenever sunlight hit it, but it was still fun. The cover alone sparked so much imagination. The imagery and stories inside fueled it even more.
