Born to Be a Cowboy

Rate this book
This New York Times bestselling author delivers a “page-turning romance” (Nora Roberts) about a woman in jeopardy who finds protection–and love–in the arms of a small-town cowboy.

After running wild in his youth, Finn Monroe is now on the other side of the law as the local attorney. Between his practice and working at his family’s ranch, his days aren’t as exciting as they used to be–until Jessica Blair steps into his office. Gorgeous and determined, Jessie has a hunch her aunt is in trouble, and Finn is her last hope. As someone who relies on facts rather than feelings, Finn is skeptical. But it can’t hurt to do a little digging.

Jessie knows her aunt, and there is no way she would disappear on an “extended honeymoon” after hastily marrying a smooth-talking cowboy. Something is wrong, and Jessie is going to find out what. As soon as she and Finn start poking around, it becomes clear someone is willing to go to great lengths to keep them from the truth. But as the danger grows, so does their attraction. With both their lives on the line, Finn will discover just how far he’ll go to keep Jessie safe.

Many thanks to Estelle at Forever for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review

3.5 stars for another swoon-worthy cowboy romance!

I think I would have enjoyed this one more if it hadn't felt so.... Cheesy? It wasn't bad enough to warrant a low rating but enough for me to not give it more than four stars.

Also, all of the romance, kisses and sex felt... a bit watered down. I know that is what some people enjoy but it just wasn't my favorite.

All in all, this was fun to read and enjoyable but not amazingly so. I still recommend you give it a try!

Happy reading!

He ran wild in his youth but now Finn Monroe is on the other side of the law as the local attorney and his days aren’t as exciting as they used to be until Jessica Blair steps into his office with a hunch her aunt is in trouble and Finn is her last hope. Her aunt hastily married a smooth-talking cowboy and then disappeared and Jessie knows something is wrong. As soon as Finn and Jessie start poking around, the danger grows and so does their attraction. With both of their lives on the line, Finn will discover just how far he’ll go to keep Jessie safe.

This cowboy romance is an emotionally gripping and very appealing read that draws readers in and holds them captive throughout. The characters are strong, vibrant and stand out, demanding attention while their romance is sweet and passionate with lots of sizzling chemistry and emotional angst. Finn is a bit reluctant to recognize his attraction to Jessie due to his past but he can’t help himself from seeing to her needs.

Although the plot is a little slow in some places, it is mostly steady paced with some faster paced excitement as it draws to a close and has thrilling suspense building throughout the story as the plot thickens and the danger grows. Some surprising twists adds to the excitement of the story and some evil charisma ensures that Finn and Jessie meets some roadblocks in their search. The ending of this story also adds some excitement and heart tugging conclusions that Finn, Jessie and their family needed. While this story is a standalone story in the ‘Montana Strong’ series, this story involves a family and readers may find that reading the first two books adds to their enjoyment of this one.

In my favorite of the Montana Strong trilogy, Finn Monroe gets his happily ever after.

Finn's story was more sensitive to me because, although a fantastic attorney, a well as doing more than his fair share at his family's ranch, there is a piece of him that remains broken. As a child, Finn and his brothers Ben and Sam led difficult lives and had experienced abuse. Mac Monroe not only took the boys in, but gave them his name, his love and his legacy.

His most recent case is with new client Jessica Blair. Her appeal is that her aunt is in trouble and that no one believes her or will assist her. Finn is a bit skeptical himself, but is willing to at least look into things. It doesn't take very long until something happens to Jessica and it soon proves that danger is close on Jessica's heels.

Meanwhile sparks begin to fly between Finn and Jessica. At first Finn is very reluctant to act on his feelings. If not for his own reluctance to believe that he could actually find the bliss his brothers have, his professionalism is very important to him.

This final story in the trilogy has the same level of suspense that the first two books have, and I enjoyed finding out what happened to Jessica's aunt. I also loved reading the "Aha" moment when Finn and Jessica "knew". To me, when reading a romance that is key.

I think any reader picking up this book should grab the first two books in the series, Cowboy on My Mind and The Cowboy Next Door and read them all in order. I recommend all three of these books and have found them to be a great reading experience and a nice escape on a cold winter day.

Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC to review. This is my honest opinion.

Sweet, satisfying series end…

This has been a wonderful series following the Monroe brothers as they bonded with their adoptive father and grew into the strong men they now were. Finn was the last brother to get his story and I wasn’t prepared for how bittersweet I felt about it…

Finn was the youngest but may have had the biggest chip on his shoulder starting out. Seeing him come into his own, fully invested in his larger family, gave me all the smiles. When Jessica landed in his office she was distraught and he was soon all in to help her. So many obstacles they had, many of them dangerous, as they dug for the truth about her aunt. Along the way romance bloomed and it was steady, almost old-fashioned, except for the occasional heated moments, of course…

These stories were old-fashioned, with their focus on family and heritage, yet they were also very modern. The women were strong, partners, equals, and stood shoulder to shoulder with their devoted, steady men. No matter what came at them they were family.

Luckily, that held true here as the series came to an end with an unexpected twist… I secretly hope Aunt Nola comes back in another book and maybe expand on Mac’s quiet background romance? Pretty please? ~Diane, 4 stars

One-time hellion turned ranch town lawyer and a woman in distress find themselves on a harrowing adventure when he takes her case. First time with the author and the series, but won't be my last.

Born to Be a Cowboy is the third, and I think, final book in the Montana Strong series. Finn is the last of three brothers adopted by Mac Monroe and, though standalone, this one wrapped up a few series threads, too. So, you can read it standalone, but there are some series mini-spoilers as well.

Finn Monroe grew up tough and mean until he and his older brothers landed with Mac Monroe on his ranch after the ran away from the last intolerable foster care situation. Mac's big heart and patience won them over and, now, as an adult, Finn is a successful lawyer of their local community following in the footsteps of his mentor, Mac's friend. One day, a distressed woman enters his office asking him to take her case when the police can't help and her private investigator met with an accident. Her aunt who raised her has gone missing after quickly falling for one of her ranch hands, getting married, and now he is directing affairs from a distance. Finn is skeptical about her claims that something isn't right when it might just be a case of sour grapes that someone else has replaced her with her aunt. But, his instinct tells him to believe her. His brothers and family tease that it doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous.

Jessie barely hires Finn to help find her aunt when she wakes to her motel burning down around her and he has moved her out to the family ranch and she's re-settled in the midst of the warm-hearted, generous Monroes. Their unique family not by blood by choice resonates with her since that is what she had with her aunt. She has been living happily as an accountant away from the ranch, but always saw her Aunt Nola's ranch as home. Now, Nola is missing and odd things are happening quickly not the least are the fatal accidents and near misses to anyone looking into the matter. Finn is determined to stand by her and get to the bottom of things. He's attractive and protective, responsible, and has definitely lived down his past. She's falling hard. Now if they can only survive to find her aunt.

I adore cowboy romance and small town modern westerns. But, pair that with a strong suspense element, and I couldn't be happier. Even though this is book three and my first time with the author, I settled right in and enjoyed this one thoroughly. I have no idea if the previous two stories about Finn's older brothers, Ben and Sam, have suspense elements, but I want to go back for them anyway. I loved the emphasis on this family of Mac and his three old friends on the ranch adopting and making a family with these three hellion boys who are now good men and finding love.

There was almost an even split between the romance and suspense elements though both developed at an even pace along with the intro to the setting and characters which made it a good standalone even if it also wrapped up the story of the three brothers and Mac, too, in the end.

There was a strong emphasis on Finn and his brothers having a rough past and turning out good that came up often, but it was swift and not dwelt on so didn't get annoying. The characters were developed, but the story also didn't delve deeply there focusing more on Jessie's case, the family life, and the romance. I liked that all the elements were in balance and the pace felt right as everything moved forward. Jessie pulled a stupid near the end heightening the danger for both of them, but it also made sense the way she had been strung so tight all along about her aunt.

As to the romance, it came along out of initial attraction to them working together and then finally giving in to wanting to be together even if they were lawyer and client. If I had a niggle, it was toward the end. After all that came before it, this late inning barrier pops up on Jessie's end and would have stayed up if family hadn't intervened. It was one of those things that a person does impulsively and on reflection during calmer times, regrets, but they won't take the step to fix either. This pair were good together all along and made sense as a couple.

All in all, it was a straight-forward, heartwarming story of family, suspense, and slightly spice romance that I settled into easily. I can definitely recommend it to those looking for a good cowboy romance and love a suspense element as well.

My thanks to Forever for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Like the first book in this series, this one dragged just as much. I began to skim pages, not really interested in the incredibly lengthy description of what the scenery looked like. The action picked up at the end, but it was predictable.

I gave this author a second chance, but unfortunately I think it'll be the last chance I give.

My Thoughts

Handsome, successful and a respected Lawyer former ”misfit” and openly rebellious in his youth Finn Monroe has the type of family that his newest client, Miss Jessica Blair, feels not only comfortable with but also safe amongst as well.

Once upon a time Finn and his 2 brothers, oldest Ben and middle brother Sam, were 3 orphans whose rocky road in life became something quite different, and at the time unbelievable to the wary brothers, when Mackenzie/”Mac" Monroe claimed them for his own and upon adoption brought them home permanently to his ranch outside Heller Montana.

The story behind their initial meeting and adoption is touched upon in a heart tugging conversation at one point between Finn and Jessie, it was a beautiful reminder that family is sometimes chosen without there being any blood ties.

Jessica Blair came to Finn because no one in her hometowns law enforcement ranks believed, or even took her worries about beloved Aunt Nola being gone without any contact for 2 weeks after a whirlwind marriage to a cowboy Jessie never met.

Aunt Nola has been Jessies sole family since losing her parents as a young child, the woman is everything to her and without Nola she feels lost inside. Another instance where she and Finn eerily mirror each others past tragedies.

Coming to the small town of Heller Montana from Arvid, only 90 miles away in distance but worlds away in character, was a last ditch effort on Jessie’s part to secure help with her quest to find the missing woman.

The result is a mind bending unraveling of a trail almost gone cold, that of a man whose life has been spent in the pursuit of wealth at the expense of innocent women who he seduces. This mystery brings not only Finn and Jessie closer but also the Monroe family becomes a family to her as well.

Between the budding romance, the family meals that make your mouth water and all the different events in between this was a fast read as once started did not want to stop until final resolutions were carried out.

Both with exactly how and why Jessies aunt, Nolinda/Nola Blair, was taken away from her beloved ranch but also how Finn and Jessies relationship turns out as well.

Upon finishing I almost missed not reading first 2 books in series but feel satisfied after a having chance to read Finn and Jessie's story.

I felt it was wonderful as a stand alone as it involved older brothers Ben and Sam, their respective spouses, ranch employees, people closely intertwined with the Monroes and their father Mackenzie/Mac Monroe so family/friends dynamic was well rounded and added nicely to the readers enjoyment.

At some point in the future it would be nice to read more of this authors works if ever get the chance again and have the time to do so.

Two stars: A book that starts out with a strong mystery but quickly falters with stupid decisions.

Finn is happy that he survived childhood, thanks to his adoptive father, Mac. Now days, Finn is small town lawyer as well as a rancher. He enjoys being close to his brothers and Mac. Finn’s world is suddenly turned upside down when a pretty young woman walks into his office with a big problem. Jessie’s beloved aunt is missing after a sudden whirlwind marriage to a man Jessie never met. Now Nola is nowhere to be found, and Jessie can’t convince the local law enforcement to help. Then the private investigator Jessie hired mysteriously dies before he can impart the information he uncovered to Jessie. Desperate, Jessie appeals to Finn for help. Finn finds himself pulled into the strange case, but the two quickly learn that someone is willing to go to great lengths to prevent them from learning the truth. Will they find Aunt Nola in time?
What I Liked:
*Born to Be a Cowboy is a book that starts out with a small town, cowboys and a suspenseful case. I was immediately drawn in by the mystery of what happened to Aunt Nola, plus I wanted to learn more about Finn and his troubled past.
*It isn’t often that I find cowboy romances with a suspenseful story line. I was pleased to find that this one had a strong mystery. The more Finn and Jessie poked around, the more dangerous things became. I was eager to learn the truth behind the case.
*I loved the strong family bonds in this one. I hadn’t read the two previous novels in this series so I wasn’t familiar with Finn and his brothers. The book opens with a heart wrenching scene as young, belligerent Finn tries to prove to his new adoptive father that he can do everything on his own, until he can’t. My heart immediately went out to Finn and his brothers, I wanted to know more. I liked that the brothers found a home with Mac, and I especially loved that they all were a tight knit family. I especially enjoyed the cozy scenes at the ranch when the family gathered for meals. It was delightful to see how the brothers were always there for each other.
*This is the third book in the series, but it reads as a stand alone. I had no trouble jumping in. I only wished that I knew more about the other two brothers and the stories behind their relationships.
*The book ends in a good spot. All the major questions are answered and the story concludes with a nice happy moment which is a relief after a bunch of ridiculous drama.
And The Not So Much:
*I thought the romance was too hurried. It felt way too much like insta love. I wanted more buildup and chemistry. I didn’t enjoy it. In my opinion it didn’t feel genuine. Finn is supposed to be this rough, tough man with a troubled past, but that doesn’t come through. Instead his character felt like a man written by a woman, if that makes sense.
*The mystery was interesting until the final third. Then things got ridiculous. I was so frustrated by Jessie and her stupidity. It was absolutely foolish the way she dropped everything and practically ran into the arms of the villain. Her common sense and intelligence went right out the window. I was disgusted. Things went downhill from there. I could barely skim the final portion I was so irritated by the dumbass decisions.
*After the silliness of the mystery is concluded, the reader is treated to another frustrating mess. The author throws in a pathetic romantic stumble. I don’t know why she decided to make a further mess of the story by adding this pitiful excuse for why they supposedly can’t be together. Ugh!

Born to Be a Cowboy is a book I wanted to like, as I was drawn in by Finn’s troubled past and the mystery and suspense. Unfortunately, the insta love romance was not for me. Then the book falls off the train track during the final portion when Jessie decides to act like a complete imbecile. The final chapters are ridiculous. This is a book I can’t recommend as I was irritated by too many things. Skip it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

Loved this book, and it was a fantastic end to a great trilogy. Great characters and a great storyline to keep me hooked. My only downfall is that I would have loved a wee epilogue of all the couples at the end. Regardless, great book.

Born to Be a Cowboy is the third novel in R.C. Ryan's Montana Strong series and it's the second book in the series I've read. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that it kept me reading until I finished it at 4:30 a.m. this morning, so if there are typos in this review, you'll know why. It was an excellent read and it gets 5 stars from this sleep-deprived reader.

This series centers around the 3 juvenile delinquents, Ben, Sam and Finn, who were fostered and then adopted by widowed rancher Mackenzie (Mac) Monroe, and this novel features the youngest of the three, Finn (Finnean), a troubled youth who grew into a fine man and became a lawyer in their small town of Haller Creek, Montana. One day, a lovely young woman, Jessie Blair, steps into his office with a problem. She was raised on her Aunt Nola's (Nolinda Blair) ranch, in nearby Arvid, Montana, after both her parents died when Jessie was five years old. Nola was her only other living family member, and Jessie's problem is that suddenly Aunt Nola up and married a smooth-talking cowboy, Wayne Stone, and has disappeared, and Jessie hasn't heard from her except for one phone call to let her know that Nola had eloped, barely knew the man she married, and Jessie hasn't heard from her in two weeks, which is highly unusual. When Jessie goes to Nola's ranch, everything is different--the wrangler's are all new hires, the old crew is gone, and Jessie's cherished belongings are in the process of being packed up and shipped away, and no one in local law enforcement believes, as she does, that her beloved aunt is in danger. She hires a local lawyer to look into Wayne Stone's background, and he supposedly had news for her and was headed to meet her, until his fatal hit-and-run car accident just before their scheduled meeting. His briefcase and the papers it contained weren't found at the scene of the accident, or returned to the man's wife, and local law enforcement in Arvid simply won't take Jessie seriously, so she decides to try a lawyer in a nearby Haller Creek, and Finn is that lawyer.

Finn is dazzled by the beautiful young woman who shows up at his office, and she is equally attracted to him, especially since he agrees to look into her aunt's disappearance. Jessie is staying overnight at a local motel, which, in the middle of the night, goes up in flames, and Jessie barely makes it out alive, so Finn brings her to the family ranch, where she'll stay while he investigates her claims of wrongdoing.

Thus begins one heck of a gripping story about the cobbled-together Mackenzie family. Finn's two brothers and the wives they met and married in the 2 previous novels, as well as the ranch hands, Otis and Roscoe, Mac, Finn's mentor, Zachariah, and traveling social worker, Mary Pat, all of whom welcome Jessie with open arms, and simply accept her as one of their own. Jessie, whose only family was Nola, is soon made to feel like a member of this warm, engaging and caring family, as Jessie and Finn join forces to try to find Nola.

When Finn goes to Arvid to investigate Jessie's claims, he's met with the same kind of empty platitudes that Jessie experienced, and when his brakes soon fail and he barely escapes death on a winding moutainside, and then learns that his brake lines were cut, he's all-in on Jessie's belief that her beloved aunt is in dire peril, and that's just for starters. As the danger ramps up, and does it ever, so too does the attraction felt by Jessie and Finn, who tries his best to be noble by not getting too involved with Jessie, since she's his client, but this is a romance novel, after all.

While this novel works just fine as a standalone, reading the previous novels in the series will give you a better understanding of the family dynamic and introduce you to Finn's older brothers and how they found and fell for their wives.

R.C. Ryan was a new-to-me author when I read the second novel in this series, and it wasn't until I learned that, in reality, she's Ruth Ryan Langan, whose novels I've been reading for more than 2 decades, that I understood why her novels grabbed me from the start and never let go--she's a darn good writer and storyteller, and this novel is certainly proof of that. This is above all, one solid, engaging, exciting, dangerous and well crafted novel of romantic suspense, and I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. I'm recommending this book and this series because I think you'll enjoy these novels and the characters within them as much as I did.

I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

“Springtime was a season of hope, and nowhere more than here in Montana.”

Whoo! I didn’t realize it had been this long since reading a cowboy romance and I kind of forgot the appeal of it. For me, the cowboy romance genre is so popular due to a desire for a simple hard-working life. And for a desire for a warm family as well as a sweet and steamy love. This book reminded me of all that and more.

This book begins with Jessica Blair who is worried about her Aunt’s disappearance, but no one is willing to hear her story. When she seeks the help of Finn Monroe, cowboy lawyer all-around hottie, he throws himself into her case. They grow closer as they search and soon Jessie is like part of the family, but the truth behind Jessie’s story puts all their happiness in jeopardy.

I had a fantastic time reading this. It’s short and sweet and full of love. Though this is the third book in the series, I never really felt lost despite not reading the other books. The Monroe family is so big and loving, reading all of them being together and caring for one another was my favorite part of the book. The side characters were so developed (probably because their stories were already fleshed out) and a joy to read. They felt like a real family, having their own jokes and histories together.

Because I loved the small moments so much, I never felt the book dragging although I acknowledge that some parts were much slower than others. I did feel the need to skim at times, but I didn’t feel frustrated with the book at all. I mostly just skimmed descriptions that were slightly too long. It was really nothing major.

I actually really liked the slow development of the book. I felt like it was a well-paced mystery that built up until its crescendo. The climax was incredibly satisfactory and I felt like the book, overall did a great job of wrapping itself up. I did feel like the villain was a bit over the top at times and seemed almost comically evil. It took me out of the book for a bit, but I got over it without much trouble.

Finally, I really loved Jessie and Finn. They had great chemistry from the start and though I would have liked more attention on them in the book, I can’t complain, because the plot was really well fleshed-out. I thought their romance was a bit rushed at times and this book is definitely a case of insta-love. However, insta-love has never been the biggest deal-breaker for me and I feel like this book can get away with it.

TL;DR: This book is an exciting and sweet romance that gives you not just an enticing mystery, but also warms your heart with the amazing Monroe family.

This is the third book in the Montana Strong series - and although this really is a standalone - I wish I had read the first two books before I got to this one. The focus of this book is on families - not necessarily the one we are born in to but the one we find and build with love. Both main characters were orphaned and left to be raised by extended family. For Jessie it turned out to be a home filled with love and growth. For Finn that home was filled with abuse and led to separation from his brothers. But, after a lot of trauma he found a home (with his brothers) with Mac. Both characters built strong family ties with those groups.

In this story, Jessie's aunt Nola has fallen victim to a serious predator - he is so skilled at transforming himself and becoming other people that no one but Jessie realizes there is a problem. Finn quickly comes to believe Jessie and goes above and beyond to help her.

Finn's family is extremely open and generous with Jessie. She and Finn are a natural fit for each other and very quickly fall in love. Finn makes a half-hearted attempt to stay away from Jessie - in consideration of the rules of attorney-client interactions, but that goes to the wayside very quickly.

Overall - this was a sweet book with some light sexy. I enjoyed it - but some things seemed to be resolved a little too easily and too neatly. The ending however, was what kept this from being a four star read for me.

If you like sweet western romances with a healthy dose of family, this is a book you should read!

I received this as an ARC from NetGalley but these opinions are my own.

Received in exchange for a honest review.

Finn shows us faith in someone when no one else does. He shows that he believed Jessie even when others didn’t. Finn was a serious but sweet cowboy. He and his brothers were adopted and he shows how grateful he is for this. His life turned around at that moment and he has never forgotten that. THe group of men that call them his family are fun, hardworking, understanding and loving. The social worker is family as well and you just fall in love with this group.

when Jessie comes into his office, he is skeptical at first but listens and searches for the truth. He feels a pull towards her as she does him but fights it at first so that he may do his job. Only the attraction can’t be fought as he learns more about her and the situation. Jessie’s only family is her aunt and she loves her like no other. Her aunt raised her and made her who she is and Jessie knows that she would never just walk away. Nor would she make ll the changes on the ranch. As Finn learns more, the danger to her aunt and everyone else increases and we see a nefarious plot playing out.

Jessie is smart and sweet. She is also tough as nails when needing to be. She loves her aunt fiercely and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to protecting and helping her. She also is attracted to Finn and as they get to know one another the attraction becomes more. She sees the good honest man he is. As he sees that in her. No matter what they feel though, her obligation is her aunt. You can tell that her aunt will come before herself no matter what.

The story is fun, flirty, loving and sexy. You fall in love with Finn and how he grew up and is with his brothers and Jessie. The story of helping Jessie is heartwarming but also intriguing. You can’t wait to see where they will go next and when he will give into his attraction. As the danger heightens so does the danger around them to others. You can kind of see the connection to what is happening with Finn’s family ranch but wonder. The threads of connection are intricately woven and you just fall more in love with the story and this family as it fleshes out. The romance is a slow burn and you feel for both of them for they are in a tough situation. I love Finn for all he did to show Jessie his love and respect for her.

A wonderful story from beginning to end that has you smile and want more.

Everytime I read a book from this series, I always get hungry. I don't know if this author was a cookbook author before, but she sure knows how to describe food. Yumm!! Anyways, we are here to talk about the youngest of the Boys and his name is Finn Monroe. He was the quiet one of the bunch and his quiet, peaceful world is about to be turned upside down when Jessie enters his office asking for help. Jessie is afraid that her aunt is in serious trouble and she has traveled from another town to enlist Finn's legal counsel.

The story starts off with Jessie busting into Finn's office seeking help for her aunt. I instantly felt chemistry and I like the touch of mystery and thrill throughout this story. Jessie's aunt has been swooned by a sweet talking cowboy and Jessie thinks that she is in trouble. She has traveled hundreds of miles to enlist Finn's help and Finn is willing the help her. After a couple of brushes with death, Finn invites her to stay at his family's ranch to be safe and until she finds her aunt. As many of you may know, I love this mixed family and the love practically jump off the page. This is the 3rd installment in the series and this family is still going strong.

I liked the chemistry between Finn and Jessie because it wasn't overly sexy or cliché. It was natural and I liked how their romance bloomed into something explosive and their night in the cabin was hot. Though I liked them as a couple, Jessie was little annoying to me. She made very stupid decisions and when things go down, she doesn't think properly. Finn is hot, of course, and he is smart and strong. He wasn't an alpha and he was toned down from the rest of his brothers. He is the true hero of this story and he alone kept me going. This story also digs a little deep with Finn being the youngest of the boys and being separated from his brother at a young age before they found Mack's ranch. It really gave him depth and allowed me to relate to him on a personal level.

I genuinely enjoyed the book because it had twist and turns along with the race for time. The romance was good, but it didn't blow my mind and that's okay because the plot was solid. I would have to give this book a solid 4 because it was good and the family dynamic is unbelievable and it saves the day. Go pick it up!! Great Series.!!

Born to Be a Cowboy is the third book in R. C. Ryan's Montana Strong series. I haven't read the first two yet, but I didn't feel the least bit lost starting with this installment. Though this story does not take place anywhere near Christmas and there's a strong suspense component, its strong emphasis on family makes it perfect for this holiday season.

Finn Monroe was a sullen, wild young boy who is now a respected attorney in his small town while also working at his family's ranch. When Jessica Blair comes to his office seeking help because she believes her aunt is in trouble, he's sceptical but agrees to help her. Though attracted to each other, Finn wants to be professional and fights that pull. When it appears that both Jessie and Finn are being targeted by danger, Finn begins to think that Jessie's aunt might really be in trouble after all. As things become more dangerous, the two are drawn even closer together. Will they be destroyed before they can find love?

This was a fun and sweet romance with some suspense woven throughout that made it exciting. Finn and Jessie were exactly what each other needed. They both had difficult childhoods and found love and comfort in family. The most touching moments in the story dealt not with their romance, however; it was the close and loving Monroe family that was its heart and soul. The pleasure and joy they took in each other's company at meals was a huge part of the story. I do believe I need to go back and read the first two books so I can once again enjoy this delightful family.

I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.

So, I thought I would love this book way more than I did. Dangerous thriller with a romance! What could be better?

Truthfully, I found this story to be extremely slow-moving, and although I enjoyed most of it, it took me weeks to get through. When it should have only taken a few days at most. I don't think any real action happened until 2/3 through the story, and it was short-lived.

But the characters were great! I especially loved Finn and his own challenges that he faced throughout the story. His backstory was extremely interesting, and his brothers were also interesting as well. I never read any of the others in the series, but I don't think I have to. Jessie was also a great character, but who made some bone-headed decisions throughout the story that had me rolling my eyes at her naivety and stupidity. Why are intelligent women in these types of stories always making stupid mistakes?

The romance was fun and enjoyable to read, and I was rooting myself for Finn and Jessie to finally get together. When they did, although that took a little while, I was happy when it happened and how it happened.

The villain was kind of cliche, but interesting before we actually met him. The mystery over who eh was and his connections kept me reading until the end. And that last action piece with Finn, Jessie and Nola, and the villain, was a great read, to say the least. (I'm a fan of good action, so that made me happy and I felt like the slowness of the rest of the story was worth it.)

The only thing that bothered me was some of the dialogue. Adult men saying "bro," and Finn saying "babe" at inappropriate times. That and the slowness of the whole read.

The extra novella was fun as well, and I really enjoyed the story of that. Two stories in one for seven bucks! A pretty good deal.

I don't know if I'll ever read this book again, but if I do, I feel like I'll go through it faster knowing what is going to happen and the little asides given in the novel. Still, I enjoyed it for what it was: fun, escapist romance fiction with a little action peppered in between. I don't regret reading it at all.

Family isn’t always a unit that you’re born into, it doesn’t necessarily need close blood to make up a family – it does require unconditional love, having your back no matter what and the sense of belonging right where you are among people who love you just as you are. Both Finn and Jessie have those types of family. For Finn, he also has his brothers as well as Mac, for Jessie, she has her Aunt Nola and right now no one will believe that her aunt is in serious danger until one small-town lawyer/rancher really listens and understands the bonds she shares with a woman who is Jessie’s complete family. Finn may hesitate on believing there is a true danger, but it’s obvious that Jessie believes that and that’s enough – until even more odd or dangerous things start happening around them and the threat becomes very, very obvious.

BORN TO BE A COWBOY is at times intense, at other times smooth like good whiskey. The balance between the two gave me a story to get caught up in, characters to believe in and a very nasty villain to loathe. If you’ve followed the series, there’s also get the chance to catch up with old friends before sending them off into the sunset. Finn and Jessie simply worked together for me, it was very easy to see them as a couple even when there were some potholes along their journey. Sometimes we make unnecessary sacrifices and we need to know the difference between what might be and what could be before doing that. I’ve enjoyed this series, yet this one could be read on its own and be very satisfying if you haven’t read the earlier titles. I had fun with Finn, Jessie, and their crews and would not hesitate to recommend this story to any Romance reader who loves a good plot, believable characters and a love that is worth fighting for.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

I read this book as a stand alone, but now want to read the previous books. Wonderful characters, and an intriguing plot made this a terrific read.

After brothers Ben, Sam and Finn lost their parents, they went to live with their uncle, who was abusive. Eventually the abuse was brought to light by a teacher and they were put into foster care- still to be abused, but now seperated. So they ran away and ended up on the Holler
Creek, Montana ranch of Mackenzie Monroe, who had recently lost his wife and son. He adopted the hooligans and with the help of friends and his ranch hands, raised them to become impressive men.

This book is about Finn, the youngest. After Mac told him that he was smart, that brains win over brawn he thought that he could be as smart as Zachariah York, a lawyer, who lived at the ranch. Zachariah became his mentor and Finn did became a lawyer. One day into his office walks pretty Jessica Blair, another orphan who had been raised on a ranch near Arvis, another small town not far away, by her aunt Nola. Nola seems to have suddenly married a "smooth-talking cowboy", and has disappeared. Jessica took her concerns to the police, but they brushed her off. And this is where I have a problem with the story and only gave it 4 stars. If the ranch had been in the family for generations, then the police chief would have known both Nola and Jessica and would have been suspicious of the sudden wedding, too. After the police brushed her off, she hired a PI, who died in a hit-and-run right after telling her that he had news, and his briefcase had disappeared. Finn takes her case and then both Jessica and Finn's lives are threaten. Finn's family rallies around to help and he falls for her (the feeling is mutual), but his ethics about client-lawyer privilege keep them apart- until it doesn't.

This book has handsome cowboys with ethics, mystery, intrigue, danger and a HEA. I read an ARC from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Be prepared for lots of surprises in this story! Ms. Ryan will delight readers with this small town romantic suspense story.

Finn Monroe has come a long way from his hellion days as a boy. Thanks to being adopted, along with his two brothers, by Mackenzie "Mac" Monroe Finn learned the error of his ways and now is an attorney in his hometown of Haller Creek, MT. When a beautiful woman walks into his office asking for help Finn never suspects the encounter will lead to mystery, danger and love.

Jessica "Jessie" Blair was desperate for help and someone to believe her. Supposedly her Aunt Nola who is like a mother to Jessie because she raised her from the age of five after the death of her parents, her Aunt Nola fell in love and got married to a newly hired ranch hand a couple weeks ago and is now away on her honeymoon. But Aunt Nola never told Jessie she was getting married and she isn't answering Jessie's calls. Jessie just knows something is wrong. She approaches Finn to help her get information on her aunt's "new husband" since his last know address was in Holler's Creek. Finn is skeptical but can't turn Jessica away. As he looks into Jessie's story Finn believes she has reason to be concerned. Plus he is super attracted to her and wants to spend time with her to get to know her better.

Born to Be a Cowboy is the third book in author. R.C. Ryan's Montana Strong series. I haven't read the first two books in the series but I really liked this book so I plan to read the first two. R.C. Ryan's characters are very likeable. The storyline is fast-paced and filled with mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed the family scenes. They are filled with fun, compassion, support and much love. I believe R.C. Ryan has a real winner here. Readers who enjoy small town romance with lots of mystery and action will want to read this book.

ARC REVIEW

Montana Strong #3, We are back one last time with the Monroes. It can be read as a standalone but I enjoyed the series as a whole. Finn Monroe a small town lawyer part time cowboy wasn't alway lucky to have this family, after the death of both parents the brothers were split up in foster care where they each had a hard time making each of the boys foulmouthed troublemakers. When they ran away they lucked out and found Mac Monroe's ranch. Mac knew how they felt he gave them a home and taught them what it was like to have a loving home environment. It was also the influence of Zachariah that Finn grew up to be a lawyer.

When Jessica walks into Finns office he knows better than to believe what she says right off the back. Her Aunt, the woman who raised her, is missing. The last she heard from her she had ran off and got married and was going on her honeymoon. That isn't like her Aunt at all for as long as she been with her Aunt she's has been married to her ranch. Then when the PI she hired, a former FBI agent died in an accident right after calling her to tell he he found something she knew her suspicions were right but nobody believed her. Finn wants to believe her something about her story rings true but it isn't until after he does some checking on his own that he fully believes her especially after the motel she was staying at and her rental car catch on fire after talking to Finn. Finn brings her home to the ranch at least there there will be someone with her at all times. But this goes deeper than just Jessica's aunt and Finn stirs up a whole lot of trouble.

I loved the relationship between Fin and Jessica. Finn has a strong work ethic and initially didn't want to get involved with a client but something about Jessica wants him to bend his own rules for once. Jessica feels guilty over what happened to her aunt thinking it never would have happened if she had still been living on the ranch, and now she's willing to risk her own happiness to make sure her aunt is never vulnerable again. Overall, it was a great read. I love R.C. Ryan's attention to detail and her descriptions for me, someone who has never been to Montana, it makes me want to visit all the same time feel like I'm already there while I read it. I love the familial relationship this whole family is wonderful.

Ms. Ryan weaves a tale about romance, pain, evil, angst, salvation, love and family.
Mackenzie Monroe once found three angry orphans intent on robbing him in his home shortly after losing his wife and son in an accident. That night proved to be the salvation for the boys and for Mac.
The boys grew up. Ben and Sam's stories are written in previous books in this series. If you haven't read them yet, I can highly recommend them as wonderfully engrossing family as well as love stories.
Finn Monroe is a lawyer as well as a rancher, modeling his career after Zachariah, a lawyer his father Mac had adopted into his family.
Jessica Blair comes to Finn desperate for help to find her aunt, since her case did not fit the parameters necessary for police intervention. He took her case skeptically, but as events unfolded, he came to believe her fully and moved to protect her.
This story has a truly evil villain, some less than stellar characters, and a bunch of honest, good christian people who came to Finn's ans Jessica's aid. The Monroe family is one that makes one heart glad and one that I would love to have for a neighbor.
Ms. Ryan's characters and scenes are so well defined that it played like a movie in my mind as I read it. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves cowboys, intrigue, romance or good family values.
I requested a NetGalley ARC as soon as I saw it was available and loved it. I hope it's not the last one in the series, I'd like to happy endings for all the men in this family.

The third book in the series with the last brother. Finn the lawyer. Opens like the others with a little tidbit about him and how at a young age with Mac he changed, found his way into law. Now a woman Jessie walks into his office and life with a problem know will believe her about. She believes there is something wrong with her Aunt after she married a man that she Jessie had never met, or seen a picture of. All of the long-time wrangles on the ranch are let go with new ones hired, yet she still has not heard from her Aunt. Finn at first is the only person to believe her that there may be a problem, until his brakes go out, a fire at a motel where she is staying, you get the point. When she finally hears from her Aunt it is only to take her name off the accounts and add this man’s name. when Jessie disappears Finn, his brother’s and family know that there is a problem. There were moments that this story dragged for me for some reason, I have read the books before this one so I don’t know why. The ending of this book does it for me. You find out about Mac’s, sister, wife, and son, how they all passed. You also get to see if maybe finally he and Mary Pat might get together. All and all very much worth the read. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 4 stars. Follow us at https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/

Back to the Monroe family. I have enjoyed each book in this series and was excited to read Finn's story. This was the perfect story for our hot and sexy cowboy/attorney. When Jessie Blair walks in Finn has no option but to look his fill. Problem is, Jessie really needs his legal help. Her Aunt Nora is gone, vanished. Supposedly the forever single was swept off her feet and whisked away for marriage and a honeymoon. Jessie knows better. Aunt Nora wouldn't not include her in the events and would definitely NOT be gone from her ranch that long.

What starts as a quest for answers soon becomes a dangerous mission to dodge danger and find the truths that seem to be popping up with each new discovery. Jessie and Finn are very interested in one another, but Finn is a man of honor and definitely doesn't want to break attorney/client relationship rules.

The Monroe family is a great group of misfits and meant to bes. I loved reading each story and the closeness that came with each new person added to the brood. This story was especially interesting as not only did Nora's mystery get solved but things of the past came to light that had never been considered.

From foster care to being adopted and living on a ranch sexy, cowboy lawyer Finn Monroe meets his match when Jessie Blair first enters his office in Haller Creek. This story is full of romance with a family of sexy cowboys. I really liked Finn, a lawyer, who immediately falls for Jessie Blair as she tries to find out what happened to her Aunt Nola, who has gotten married and disappeared.

Jessie is such a strong character that you cannot help but like her independent spunk and the sparks that fly between her and Finn. The love Mac has for his three adopted sons is remarkable and their journey from their breaking into his house until the present day was very emotional.

This book was so full of suspense that I was not sure what was going to happen next or how the story would end. I really enjoyed the epilogue to the story and I cried when I heard Mac's story. What a great romantic suspense. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Jessie knows something is wrong when her normally level headed aunt decides to tell her shes getting married to someone she barely knows on a whim. There is something fishy going on and shes on a mission to getting her aunt back if only anyone would believe her. When she hired Finn Monroe he digs up some things that also don't see right and after a couple of mishaps its might seem like someone doesn't want them to go around looking for the truth.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved that there was plenty going on to keep me entertained. It wasn't super over dramatic but there was a couple of mishaps, close calls, and things that were curious to make the wanting to see whats really the truth and what would happen next. I loved getting to know the characters and seeing Finns story and rooting for the two to be together. I loved seeing things unfold as the characters tried to their best to get closer to the truth and finding the aunt before its too late. Overall this was a pretty great book I really enjoyed it.

This was another book in the Montana Strong series. This wasn’t spicy 🌶️.

This book is about a guy named Finn Monroe. Him and his brothers were adopted by Mac. Finn Monroe was wild in his youth but now he is on the other side of the law working as a local attorney. He works for his practice and on his family’s ranch. He meets a woman named Jessica Blair. Jessica steps into his office gorgeous and determined. Jessica has a hunch that her aunt is in trouble. Finn Monroe is her last hope. Finn relies on facts rather than feelings. Finn is skeptical of her hunch. He decides to do a little digging. Jessica knows her aunt and there is no way she would disappear on an extended honeymoon. Jessica is going to find out what happened to her aunt. Finn and Jessica start poking around. Someone is willing to go to great lengths to keep them from finding out the truth. Finn and Jessica develop attraction towards each other. Their lives are on the line. He decides to keep her safe. I liked reading this book.

What away to end a series, but with a bang. The author did an amazing job and keeping you in the edge of your seat the whole book. I have really enjoyed every book in this series and this book didn’t disappoint. I love how the author took a group of “misfits” and made them family and made them the most important to each other no matter what. I really like Jessie and how she fit with the group but also that she was strong independent and wouldn’t take nothing from no one and no one was going to stand in her way of protecting her aunt. I was not a fan of Chief Tyler I so wanted to reach in the book and strangle him...ugh. There is one sex scene in this book. Overall this book was amazing and hard to put down, I really wish there was more to come, your seriously can’t go wrong with this book or this series. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a review and have given my honest opinion
