Most people will say that you can’t run from your past. For this 17-year-old girl, running seems like the only answer. She struggles to speak of the events that led her to the bridge where she attempted to end her life. After refusing to give her name, the police take her to a nearby hospital where she is admitted under the name Jane Doe. Her fate rests in the hands of one doctor, who is determined to earn her trust and help her overcome what she is so obviously running from. This story is filled with every emotion. A rough upbringing is relatable, but it’s easy for one person to forget just how bad things can get. This story depicts the struggle and hope for escape both physically and mentally.
I received an e-ARC from Kay Bruin in exchange of an honest review.
"She had two holes in her heart. One from her mother leaving and one from her father not loving anymore."
[Trigger warnings- domestic abuse and violence.]
The plot:4/5 stars The plot was quite simple and unique yet predictable. I loved the way the story unfolded. There were a lot of things that kept me thinking about Jane and her life.
Characters:4.25/5 stars Jane- she is a 17-year girl who is desperate to find love. She is a strong protagonist and what amazes me is the way how she bore all the abuse by her step-mother and her own father. But sometimes she did annoy me by not asking for help, even when the person is directly asking to provide some help.
Coach Stinson- he is one of those teachers who looks out for his students and cares for them genuinely. He is very kind and considerate and is not hurt when Jane refuses his help for a hundredth time.
Kathy- She's the only friend Jane has. Initially Kathy has some attitude problems but later she's all good to Jane. She sticks up for Jane and provides the much needed moral support to Jane. I would like to know what happened to her after the end-of-the-book incidents.
Pamela(Jane's stepmom)- She is the most cruel ,horrible and heartless character in the book who abuses Jane and is even ready to kill her. She likes to have a control over everything and hates Jane with all of her heart.
Tom- He is Jane's father and one of those henpecked husbands who gives in every whims of his wife. His true face is quite confusing to decipher in the beginning but becomes quite clear in the end. He seems to love Jane but refuses to show it. He is a partner in crime and abuses Jane too.
the writing:3/5 stars Writing is simple and easy to understand. I was intrigued right from the beginning of the book. There seemed to be a few errors in editing. The story could have been executed in a better way.
Overall:4.25/5 stars A heart-wrenching and emotional read with a good but quite predictable plot. Recommended to anyone who wants to read something different. A good book for book club discussions too.
"It's not stupid to have hope for anything. Especially when it's from people so close to you."
This seems to have been written by a young girl because while a bit curious, it needed work with the plot, the grammar, the editing and a bit of elaboration at times would be something to work on for further stories. It was hard to follow at times because the whole plot seemed to be a bit rough. On the positive side, the spelling seemed good, and it did end on a positive note.
Jane Doe is a cue of life’s misfortunes, Clearly and plainly written yet fascinating contrive mystery. It’s great to read this book that deals with such struggle and hope for getting off both physically and mentally. This was an emotional story filled with lovely characters, Where I felt I was going missing through the novel much quicker than many other novels. I wanted to read more and more about Jane and her life. I am so glad that I took a chance and decided to read this wonderful book.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I must say, it captivated me. It was superb, yet heartbreaking story about Jane Doe.

The concepts explored in this book relate to a lot of peoples real issues and this allows for a true connection with a lot of people. The basis for the book is wonderful and the execution is even better. Would recommend to anyone as it is a great read and gives insight to other aspects of life
The story has a very interesting premise; one which is refreshingly genuine and passionate. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading suspenseful, yet heart-wrenching, stories.
OMG!!! I loved this book so much. The plot was truly mindbending and I will definitely be recommending it to my friends. Even the story dealt with a lot of heavy topics, it still allowed us to follow the path of the main character as she grew through the painful challenges that she faced.
I like it very much. The story has enough content and twists to convert into a great script for a movie. It is also based on actual life facts. Many people in the world suffer from some sort of abuse when kids and this story shows the consequences that could evolve out of them. Many times when people are found doing crazy stuff we always wonder what was what took this individual to do what it was done or why push someone to take their lives. The answer is usually in the past.
As an avid reader, I'm always pleased to find a young author who piques my interest. Kay Bruin is one of those authors, and I look forward to reading anything that comes from such a prolific mind!
I wasn't expecting this book to be as good as it was. However, the store of Jane had so many twists and turns that I could not put the book down. I finished it during several evenings and was glued to it the entire time. Kudos to Kay Bruin for having an amazing plot, amazing character development, and an amazing voice. Kay is what every author should aspire to be....solid.
No spoiler alert: Actually this book has got a freat plot with new twists towards the end. It is easily one of the best teenager stories I have ever read
A tense and complex novel. Jane's situation is one of sadness yet also one of perseverance. The desire to live and keep going is truly amazing considering her circumstances. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-written story with a positive yet realistic ending.
