The results of an animal hoarding case overwhelm the animal rescue where Sheridan Hendley and her stepdaughter Maddie volunteer, and the discovery of a dead body at the hoarder’s house draws Sheridan into yet another murder mystery. The suspects are many, including a young man who is doing community service at the shelter, the dead woman’s ingrate son and damaged daughter, a young woman who assisted the dead woman, and a neighbor who may have wanted the dead woman’s property.

Sheridan, her now-husband, Brett, and his daughter Maddie were featured in the Cold Creek Mystery series, at the end of which Sheridan and Brett get married. This new series relocates them to Appomattox County, where Brett has a condo, Maddie goes to school, and Sheridan has a new job at a new college.

There is much to like about this “new” series. Sheridan is still in contact with people from her old job, making the transition to a new life seem real. The stories are well-written, the characters fully-developed, and the plots topical. I like that Sheridan’s husband can’t always help her, either because of jurisdictional issues, or being busy with his own job.

I also like how Sheridan treats Maddie, as a fully-formed person, rather than something that just gets in the way of Sheridan and Brett’s relationship. She is more of a friend and mentor to Maddie, rather than trying to force Maddie to accept her as a mother. The plots are always topical, and the author treats everyone with compassion, even the “bad guys.” This is a clean series, in the sense that the violence occurs off-screen, there’s no cussing, and no excessive details about Sheridan and Brett’s private time. Normally, the topic of animal hoarding would cause me distress, but the author handles that with compassion too, and doesn’t dwell too much on the condition of the animals, but rather what people are doing to help them. I look forward to reading more about Sheridan, Brett, and Maddie.

Puppies and murder what more could you want in a cosy mystery? nothing and I enjoyed this book just the way it is. I think of hoarders as collecting paper or junk and filling there house with it and this book is no exception but I never thought what would happen if the boarder applied it to say well dogs. Good job the author did because it makes for an interesting listen. You really got a sense of how dangerous this condition is and how baffling it is to others. Although the main character didn't really do any investigating she soon finds herself caught up in the case helping the sheriff. I think there is a moral to this story that we should all remember what is important and I can't wait for the next book.
When a dog comes home carrying a puppy it's owner investigates where it came from, only to find his neighbour dead and the house and yard over run by dogs. It's all paws on deck at the local animal shelter when more than twenty dogs and puppies in a bad condition are moved there for treatment and re homing. Sheridan as one of the volunteers helps not only the dogs but also the sheriff as another body is found on the property. The reclusive couple was even estranged from there own children, so who buried the husband and killed the wife? To find any clue or even a will Sheridan will have to go though boxes of someone's else treasure. Can she help re home the dogs and catch a killer?
I liked the narrator and thought she helped to bring the story to Life by using lots of different voices for the characters.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Family feelings

A great read. A plot built around an elderly couple whose children have grown up, moved away and have very little (if any contact) with their parents (sounds like a lot of families nowadays). However things are deemed not to be quite right when multiple dogs are found on the property, the husband is found in a shallow grave in the back and the wife is found dead in her bedroom (from blunt force trauma). Too make matters worse the house is a hoarders paradise and the dogs have run free throughout. Dealing with the additional dogs and puppies puts a strain on everyone but it is the belligerent behaviour of the son that causes most angst. His sister covers under his blustering and he is free and easy with his fists. Plus there are also concerns about the police despatched. Why did she print out emails for the dead woman. Worse there is no will. Can they find out what has been going on in that house and who is responsible? Loved the way the characters were portrayed, interacted and the growth we see in some of them. Well worth a read.

An old woman found dead in her house--Not only was the house a total mess but she had an awful lot of dogs!! And I mean a LOT!! They all had to be brought to the local shelter which was run by a really nice, but slightly confused older lady who really did not know how to be mean! It took Sheridan and several volunteers to get all the dogs to the shelter. Then because there were far too many--Sheridan had to call other shelters to see if they could take some!

When the son and daughter are told--and they showed up-the daughter is devastated. It took days to clean it out with several people helping. Meanwhile the son was not the most likable person!

So who gets the house ultimately--and what happened to all the dogs? Lots of twists and turns as the police try to find who murdered the old woman!

This book will keep you turning the pages. I found it quite enjoyable!

Nice easy read

This book waa interesting. However it would probably have been better had I read the previous books in the series. Although the characters were interesting, they were not very well developed as a stand alone. Sheriden , the main character, was sadly lacking in good development. I could see she is probably a good main, but much was missing. The murder was a first type for me, so the book had that going for it. And, of course, the shelter, its dogs, employees and the owner, Mrs. C, made for quite quirky and fun as well as dramatic events and feelings.
Worth the read, but perhaps read the preceding books first

In this second book of the series, Sheridan Hendley, who volunteers part-time at the dog shelter, is called upon to help rescue more than twenty malnourished canines. During the removal of the dogs from the rundown house, the body of an old woman is found and Sheridan can't help but get involved in the case. I recommend this book to others who enjoy cozy mysteries that include intelligent sleuths and lovable animals. Jeanne Pilgrim Mayo's narration is great. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily left this review.

SLOW MOVING MURDER MYSTERY

This second book lost a little of its luster from the first story, but still was a cute and entertaining story. Sheridan has settled into her new lifestyle working in the educational field on her one year assignment. A welcome addition is her being asked to periodically assist the local authorities in cases needing her help. Once again she gets involved in a local murder mystery and her involvement in the past rescue abandoned dogs.

Very Entertaining!

Lots of dogs found in the home of a hoarder, hit over the head and dead, is the basic theme. It is necessary to remove and care for over 20 dogs and puppies, find new homes for them, and determine who killed Justine! Lots of clues, suppositions, and little evidence make this a problem. Justine's son is a jerk and browbeats his sister, no will or important papers can be found, so serious investigation is needed. It is a quick enjoyable story .

Enjoyable

I liked this story. Not as fond of the animal abuse situation but I know that it contributed to the mystery story line. The mystery moved along well. The characters were well developed. There was a nice balance between learning about the main character Sheridan and her personal situation and elements of the murder. I will definitely look for more books by this author.

Brett and Sheridan

He is a state policeman and she is a college professor teaching psychology. She tends to get involved in murders. His daughter lives with them. Sher and Maddie volunteer at a local pet shelter, which is how she gets involved in a murder investigation. The local police chief asks her opinion. This is a great family and they make good friends. It is a pleasure to read this series and get to know the locals.

I am loving this series. An abandoned house, full of dogs and hoarded rubbish leads to the discovery of the body of the owner. Sheridan's volunteering at the dog rescue involves her in the mystery. Excellent characters, great story and lots of cute dogs what more do you need in a cozy mystery. Narration is great, easy to listen to and entertaining. Great stuff. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review

Fun to read and well-worth the time to read.

Cute personalities of the characters in the book. I liked the way they figured it all out.
I will be interested in reading more in this series.. I am anxious to see how some of the characters grow and change.
Would I recommend this book? You bet. If you enjoy mysteries, humor, and rather messed up personalities, this will be right up your alley.

Wish I could say that the personality of Jacob and his sister, Helen were pure fiction, but that would be a big fat lie. Lots of interesting characters, a convoluted plot full of dogs and delinquents, and a really great read!
Narrator Jeanne Pilgrim Mayo is excellent at making the differences in characters clear as well as adding more reality to the story itself.

This is a great book and series. I really enjoy the character of Sheridan Hendley. We met her in another series and now that she’s gotten married and moved, there’s a whole new set of characters. The author does a great job in setting the mystery and providing us the story and clues. This is another 5 star book.

Another murder

Justine is a hoarder of stuff and dogs. When she dies, the dogs end up at Mrs. Chantilly's rescue, and Sheridan is pulled into another murder when it is discovered Justine didn't die of natural causes. I am binge reading the series and enjoying the continuing characters.

A Good read

An interesting and intriguing story. I liked that there was an insight into a rescue centre for dogs, and the hard work that volunteers do. There was a murder that Sheridan couldn't resist investigating. The characters were well rounded and believable.
