H.G. Chambers is a huge nerd. I mean, you should see this guy’s collection of Zelda, Star Wars, D&D, and Tolkien nonsense! He’s also written a few books, I’m told, though chances are they’re equally nerdy. So unless you’re fluent in Klingon and enjoy painfully drawn out conversations about obscure Elden Ring lore, maybe don’t ask what he’s into. Despite what should be a catastrophic social handicap, he’s managed to find an awesome wife and has two implausibly awesome kids (talk about beating the odds). H.G.C. lives out his pathetically nerdy life on Vancouver Island, Canada, where people are polite, and the geese are complete jerks. Seriously…don’t mess with the geese, they will end you.

What can I say? So far, I have completely enjoyed every book I have read by this author - and this book is no exception. It is wonderfully entertaining, beautifully written, delightfully engaging .... without giving away any spoilers, the storyline centers around the female main character, Kivanya ("Kiva", to family and friends) and her bonded kiraeen, Noor and Kiva's unexpected - and life changing - journey to the spirit world. The author is adept at giving stunning details and you are drawn in to the creative and fantastic lands, cultures and mythologies of the people that reside in the lands he has created. If you are a fan of fantasy books like LOTR or enjoy games like D&D or even video games that have magic, mystery and melee, the you will - most likely - really enjoy this author and his books!!

The summary of the previous book helped me recall the story so far. With the next book, it picks up were it left off. There is a different feel to the change in location where the story takes place and does effects the others in the story. Looking forward to the next book.

The first Windwalker book remains one of my very favourite books ever, however in this 2nd book in the series Kiva and her bonded Kiraeen, Noor grow from strength to strength, they are still fighting the Sharun threat in the Madina Basin and the threat is growing worse daily as now Summoners are attacking and these are no longer mindless warriors! Whilst continuing with this fight, Kiva is still intent on fighting to bring about equality of the sexes to her land yet in doing so she was neglecting her own relationship with Jonah and their bond was floundering. This time round Kiva is forced into taking her fighting spirit, full of courage and bull headedness, to the in-between spirit world. She is taken by the majestic white Kiraeen and is separated from Noor, to a land full of mystery, beautiful and scary at the same time and she is searching for people from the basin who had just disappeared, amongst whom is Mica her beloved elder brother. Here she encounters Limerick Vane the Pirenyn and Maru and they in a way look out for her. This book is awesome in that it has a kick ass heroine like no other, beautiful creatures like Noor and Maru and descriptions of the Sahra desert, the forest in the in-between land and the magical lake and the temple of the Goddess which are truly brought to life for us the readers. This book has gone one further than the first book in that it touches on the spiritual side of life and death and makes one think about the important things in life! Also maybe there is a love story in the making in book 3, something I for one am really looking forward to reading more about, as well as the fight which still needs to be fought for the women of the Madina Basin many of whom are as strong as their men if not stronger, but have never been granted the chance to prove themselves! If anyone can bring about this equality it definitely is none other than Kiva with Noor instigating her all the way!

This is a sequel to the amazing first Windwalker book and it certainly delivered. It took the story in a completely different direction than I expected, but it was refreshing! I think Lim might be my new favorite character, but Samal was great too! Kiva experienced a lifetime of character development in this adventure and I can only imagine what the next adventure holds in store for her!

This is the second book in the Windwalker series and continues to follow Kiva and her kiraeen Noor. This follows on a few years later on from the first book, Windwalker: Forbidden Flight where Kiva became a Windwalker through bonding with Noor, against all the traditions of her people. Now the town’s council is made up of half women and half men, from the different sects of workers. More females have joined the previously ‘male only’ action and danger sects, but as a separate ‘female’ group. The council and the people have not progressed far enough yet to intermingle the sexes in the sects.

The town’s defences have been improved and security and active patrols happen daily. The main threat is still from the sand soldiers, who appear in whirls of sand and can disappear almost as quickly. There seems to be someone behind increasing the attacks and bringing them closer to the town. A summoner, who can bring forth enormous creatures such as scorpions the size of a couple of buses. Think Jason and the Argonauts! Soon after one attack a couple of people go missing. The guard and the Windwalkers go out and search for them but find no sign, until Kiva spots a round circle of sand.

Another three go missing, one of them her brother Mica in the middle of a battle. Kiva goes out with Noor to try and trace her brother and the others. Her budding relationship with Jonah from the first book is now one of mentor and student, but she would still like more. She angers him by missing training sessions in her hunt for her brother and before she can speak to him, he disappears to follow up on a clue about his father who disappeared on a holy quest some ten years previously.

Kiva continues her search and her and Noor spot a white kiraeen, something they have never seen before. As they attempt to follow it, Kiva falls through into another world. One with a forest, partly dying after the instrument of the Gods that kept the forest and its creatures alive and in good spirits was taken. Here she meets a resident and his companion and finds that this is where the dead normally come and is a place between worlds. Other humans have been spotted and she tries to find them and her brother. Evil is taking over where the power of good has been removed and tainting all it touches with evil powers. She has a fight on her hands to survive in this place and to even attempt to get back to where she belongs, if this is even possible.

This is a superb follow on book from the first one. Yes, there is less about Kiva’s love life and even the gender equality she was fighting for, but this book shows how she has moved on and taken a much larger role in the safety of her people and fighting off the enemy. It further explores the connection between Kiva and Noor, even when she ends up in the in-between world, which is fascinating, if you really think about it. It shows her becoming more mature as a person and having to think of others before just doing what she wants. The fight for gender equality is still one clearly to be fought at the end of the book, but it leaves room for matters to evolve in the next book, which I hope will come.

Once again we have a 5 star book here. Mr. Chambers is quite a good fantasy author. This book has all the excitement, decent storyline and a few surprises as well.
Another series. However his books can be read without becoming lost by not reading previous volumes. We are continuing to follow the making of the first woman windwalker’s journey as she begins by being a hero but after saving a group of fighters she goes on a new adventure trying to find people who just vanished in the dessert. It is personal however seeing one of the people is her brother. She is thrust into a new world that is a place between and begins to find having the same evil she had fought in her own world.
She does accomplish her journey and once again is the main hero.
This is a nice clean novel with a bit more violence than some may like. There is also some polytheism implied but other than that young adults would most likely enjoy it if they want a nice happily ended fantasy to read. So I would recommend them to give it a try. It is fast paced and one warning, I had a hard time putting it down. So be ready for a late night with this one.

Another epic read. Even it was a great read, and i give it 5 stars, but i liked the first book better. Why? i would have loved Kiva flying more on her great flying beast/Dragon Noor. But i loved it, as it was

I received this a free copy of this book for an honest review. This sequel to "Windwalker: Forbidden Flight" is a welcome addition to the series. The story continues with the trial and tribulations of Kiva and her role in society. I found this book to be hard to put down and read it late into the night.

Kiva's story continues in a breath-taking, fast paced adventure. A new cast of characters are added to the one's from the first story, and they work together to survive their travails. It's a well told fantasy quest/adventure that grips the reader and won't let you put the book down until you find out how the story ends! A lot happens but this adventure concludes while leaving a lot for Kiva to deal with in the future. Kiva's character continues to develop and mature, and is both believable and engaging. I am looking forward to reading more about this world and seeing how she continues to deal with her challenges, both outside and within her society.

Five people are missing. Kiva goes looking for them and all she finds is a swirl in the sand in a number of places. Kiva ends up crashing through the sand. She encounters many obstacles in trying to find her missing people. The forest is decaying. Someone stole the scepter and now wants to return it. Kiva leads them to the temple to return the scepter. She hopes with the scepter returned they will be able to get back home. There is a lot of action and harrowing experiences for Kiva.

I really enjoyed catching up to Kiva in this deeper and at times darker sequel to Windwalker. This is an exciting adventure story and it was fascinating to see Kiva's growth - I love a strong female protagonist. I can't wait until my two young kids are old enough so I can introduce them to this author and the world he conjures!

You know when you find one of those stories, ones so well written you forget everything else and end up fizzing with excitement because it's actually something original and fun to read? Oh yes, book 2 of the Windwalker series is one of those. YA fantasy needs more like this.

In book 1 we met Kiva, a girl who dreamed of becoming a windwalker - a warrior who rode on the backs of the feathered kiraeen. But the patriarchy said no. She didn't take this for an answer. It took the dragonrider trope and imbued it with fresh spirit in a fantastical desert world. Now Kiva and her bond-mate Noor are helping to fight the evil creatures threatening her home, she and Jonah are unsure about their budding relationship... If you've read enough YA novels, you think you know where this story is going. Girl continues to prove worth by fighting and earns greater respect (but not quite enough), boy and girl argue but then fall into each other's arms, so on and so forth-

Nope. No more trope reworking here. Kiva becomes central to discovering what happens to people who have gone missing in the desert. The coming-of-age theme continues, but in a way you don't expect. Our wonderfully scrappy, spirited heroine finds herself in an alien spirit-world where she will be tested by the challenges of leadership, the burdens of truth, and by the power the gods themselves. Romance, clunky but sweet as it is in this case, takes a back seat to the action and adventure. I couldn't predict how events were going to unfold, so gave up trying to second guess and found myself really enjoying it. There's darkness and danger to build up the tension, but Kiva and her crew are ready for the challenge.

The author's outgrown the tropes just as his protagonist Kiva has outgrown her role amoungst her people. You wouldn't have thought it an indie published book; the writing is top-notch polished stuff. Knowing that this isn't the last we'll hear from Kiva and Noor, I'm going to be eagerly waiting for the next tale from the desert.

-I received an ARC copy of this ebook from the author - this in no way obliged me to enjoy it as much as I did or review it as I have done-

I love Noor!
I am so happy that the author has decided to write more books about Kiva and her people - and, of course, the Kiraeen, the fantastic creatures on which the Windwalkers fly.
This book is set slightly later than the first one in the series, in which Kiva challenged the preconceptions of her people to show that females can become Windwalkers. We see that things have moved on slightly, in that more females have joined the 'action' sects. However, not all people are happy with this, although change is progressing.
Kiva's people are still being attacked by mysterious beings made of sand, and Kiva, in her attempts to find out what is happening, finds herself in a mysterious place, where other vanished people have also arrived. Most of the book deals with that place, and her efforts to try to get them all back to their normal world. That sounds a little dry, but it is a great book, with really interesting characters and places, and plenty of twists and turns. I really did enjoy reading it, especially the sarky comments from Kiva's kiraeen, Noor.
This is part of a series, and readers will benefit from reading the first book before this, although it is not strictly necessary.

The follow up to Windwalker: Forbidden Flight, Chambers has written another truly brilliant novel. Following the main character from the previous book, Kiva the Windwalker. Kiva's character continues to develop brilliantly, along with many other characters, who all become distinct individuals as the book progresses. Chambers world building also continues to be on point, pulling the reader in to well thought out narrative which the author clearly feels very passionately about.

The book diverges along several plot lines, all of which are well thought through and add to a greater understanding of either the over arching plot of the book, or of the individual characters. The book strays into some very profound areas, with an over arching theme of life and death running through the whole. The book also has several twists which I did not see coming, which is also a pleasure. By the end, Chambers has wrapped most of the plot elements up, with the exception of a few which are clearly being saved for a further book.

It is safe to say that this book will be sticking with me, as it has occupied my thoughts for since. It is safe to say that I am looking forwards to the next book! I have given this book 4.8 stars.

I feel like this book was unnecessary. It didn't push the main story, most of it was just a detour in a rather unoriginal Spirit World.
But the biggest problem was that the protagonist got so drunk on her success that she became completely insufferable. She's so selfish and arrogant, I found myself rooting against her at some point. She gets mad at her family when they worry about her - well, guess what, Kiva, adult people can die too and these are not some strangers who could walk by your corpse without sparing it a glance. They're your family, of course they're gonna be worried when you do risky sh*t! You should be grateful, you stupid brat.
Later she gets mad at her love interest when he feels ignored - doesn't he understand how important she is?! She has bigger things to deal with! Not that she's gonna tell him anything, he should just know, you see. He should wait for her, like a faithful dog. The girl's so full of herself she doesn't even know her brother's career path. Jesus.
But of course, she's so awesome that everyone, even gods, loves her, everyone apologizes and of course she saves the day. Yawn.
I just hope someone will knock some sense into her in the next book.

Another exciting adventure for Kiva and friends

Amazing characters, with strong females in the lead. This story keeps you on your toes and frantically reading to the last page. Love this world H.G. Chambers has created, as it is so real and easy to picture. The characters have good, meaningful growth and display courage and loyalty. You even have to admire the cowards for their faith in going onward. This story is so very deftly written, as you come to expect from the great H.G. Chambers. Completely satisfying read. Perfect for all ages, especially with discussion for younger readers seeking guidance about their blossoming faith. Not necessarily the typical spiritually driven work, the intriguing overtones work well in the storyline. Yes I totally enjoyed this read, and you will also!

A FABULOUS FANTASY READ

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end.

Kiva is a wonderful character who has the courage to find her own way in a strange desert world, and along the journey she discovers what more about herself than she expected. The author managed to breathe life into the desert and create an awesome world that you couldn’t help but feel a part of.

This author knows how to deliver on his promises and I am thrilled to have come across him.

If you like fantasy, action, plot twists, great characters that live on even after you have put the book down, and brilliant endings, you will love this book. This author has a good understanding of what people like to read, and how to keep them enthralled. I would highly recommend this series.

Well done, Mr. HG Chambers.

Really enjoyed this second entry into the Windwalker books. This book takes on a much different setting than the first and we get introduced to more characters. The world we come into in Relic of the Dead is very much a spiritual realm and it carries a bit of a deeper meaning than just a girl trying to find her way with her people. The setting is still very familiar with forests and rivers and yes, still a desert. The author does a magnificent job of bringing everyone together and closes up the end of the book very well. This is much more action oriented than the first and you will most certainly be glued to the pages if you enjoyed Forbidden Flight. The characters show great courage and growth throughout the story and I'm sure book 3 will be just as good as the first two!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily am leaving a review.

Exceptional Fantasy!

This is book two of the "Windwalker" series. After reading "Forbidden Flight" , I couldn't wait to dive into this book. I was not disappointed! I love being in Kiva's world. As Kiva's bond grows deeper with the great raptor Noor, the desert lands are being invaded. Kiva has one goal, to be accepted as a Windwalker and save her people. Not an easy task. This book is so well crafted and the plot never failed to keep me glued to the pages. The author has created an exceptional fantasy world with charismatic characters. Within these pages you will find plenty of action, friendship, pain and hope. I highly recommend this book.

Unexpected but great
This sequel to Forbidden Flight turned out differently from what I expected. The new world I got to explore together with the main character Kiva is unlike the one in the first book. For me it was somewhat unexpected, but I really enjoyed it. After all, that's why I read fantasy, to get away from our own world and discover new and fascinating ones. And this book delivers a thoroughly fascinating world. Kiva and her companions are thrust into it and have to find a way out before they can never return to their own world. I was with them every step of the way.

Great second in series

This novel was a great follow-up. The world Kiva enters to save the lives of a young boy, a woman warrior, and her brother Mica, is well created. Kiva is separated from Noor in a world between life and death. In this world, she has to fight to right a wrong, learns the truth about Jonah's father, and learns about friendship. This not a stand alone novel. The first book is needed to fully appreciate the second.

Life starts with us totally dependent on our parents and elders. As we mature, we are driven to become independent. Kiva has reached the point where if she survives the challenges of independence, she will start to learn the necessity of mentoring, leadership and guiding the clan.
I have read late into the night to help Kiva finish this great adventure. I will start the next book in the series after I sleep.

Starts slow but takes off

I almost didn’t finish this one as it had a really slow start with not much happening. I rarely give up on a book though so plowed ahead and am glad I did. The story is a bit more mystical than the first but there is some action and Kiva grows a bit more. Unfortunately (at least to me) Jonah and Noor are mostly absent from this one.
