STOP ROMANTIZING ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP!!

Okay let's be honest , I know Chinese Govt banned this series for all the shitty reasons but this book is problematic and not the series , the series cut several scenes from the book and I am glad it did!

The series is "DOPE" , you understand because the chemistry between the characters was amazing but this book "UGH" , raping and kidnapping your crush is not romantic and helding them captive till they agree to be with you , is not how you show your love !

Apart from this , the utter shitty representation of male chauvinism and misogynist nature of all the men , just made me wanna hit them with their own book !

Well the season 2 of the show was cancelled and the characters were banned to appear on TV for a long time , actually I am kinda glad there is no S2 but banning actors is not good, like ban this book if you want to not the actors please.

1176 pages of pure bliss. The longest a good book is, the happiest I am. I got my fill with this one. Thank you, Author.

From the title to the blurb, to the chemistry of two unforgettable main characters, the endearing side characters, the entertaining storyline, the sometimes humorous, some others sad, scenes ... everything in Addicted gets you hung and addicted to this novel. The same goes for the second book. The connection between Gu Hai and Bai Luo Yin is just as its name says it: "Hai Luo Yin" (Heroin). Once you taste it, you're gone to remain forever .... starved.

And what to say about Bai Han Qi? If only all fathers were like Bai Luo Yin's.

This book is trash. And not in the joking way the kids call things trash, it's romance novel level trash. It romanticizes abusive relationships, has an explicit rape scene (between the two main characters!!), ridiculously contrived plots, a complete lack of consequences for actions, unequal relationship dynamics, etc. I only finished it because I wanted to be able to count another book towards my goodreads challenge. Don't read this. Watch the TV series instead and be glad that it got cancelled before they could get to the rape plotline.

As always, Chinese novel tend to be long-winded, but every chapter was worth the time to read. I find the novel brings you on a roller-coaster of emotions. It evokes all sort of feelings from the start till the end.

Trigger warnings for rape, abusive behavior, misogyny, homophobia

I had to dnf this.

I usually wouldn't rate a book I haven't finished but I only have 48 chapters left so ...

This review is probably going to be all over the place, so ... bare with me.

If you, like me, wanted to read the book because you watched the drama series, you should be up for a disappointment. At least I was. The drama series is a pretty good adaptation for the first 111 or so chapters. I enjoyed myself putting all my concerns about some of the consent issues aside. It was a good read. But then Bai Luo Yin's girlfriend returns and that changes the tone of the book dramatically. From that point onwards I couldn't get with their relationship anymore. And it just goes on from there.

I've read my fair share of MM romance/ erotica/ fan fiction what have you not. I'm also not squeamish when it comes to a little dub con (I know, I'm a horrible person) but this. This isn't dub con. This is non consensual from the get go. I never had the feeling that they both enjoyed each other very much during sex. Well, that's not true. The one on top had a great time while the one on the bottom hated it.

And it's not just the sex. Their relationship becomes so toxic, so abusive. They hit each other constantly. And no, this isn't portrayed as playful, it least it didn't read playful to me.

I had to stop when the new couple was introduced. If you've watched the show, you can probably guess who they are. And it follows the same pattern.

I'm to lazy to google abusive relationships, but I'm sure that Bai Luo Yin and Gu Hai's check all the boxes.

I'm just so fucking disappointed! I'll re-watch the series, again, and try to forget the 159 chapters I've read.

YES, DEFINITELY.

Honestly, I didn't know what to expect when i was starting this novel as it was my first bl (i watched bl's before this, i highly recommend together with me). But after reading it i was really impressed, i read some reviews that were hating on the book, probably because of a scene that occurred in the story, however, don't let these things make you avoid this book. It's a roller coaster of emotions but it isn't so cliche, there are funny moments and ones of love, but also ones that make you want to tear your hair out but the two characters who are so incompatible with each other, find love. it's really worthwhile, the plot is intriguing and i really admire the book because of the straight forwardness of the leads ( i really hate characters who don't get straight to the point). The book is pretty long, but you'll be finished before you know it. There aren't any loose ends at the end which is another pro, there is nothing left out which makes the ending so satisfying. I don't like pondering over the ending for hours, contemplating what happened. I really do love this book and i wouldn't mind reading a third book lol. I decided not to watch the tv show due to the fact that there wouldn't be a second season, apparently it was cancelled because of the link between their sexuality and the military... don't quote me on this, i had just read this somewhere. I don't know if the tv show will be as great as the book is and frankly, i don't want to know as i'm afraid to ruin the perfect image of the book i have in my head.
Basically, this book is amazing and i think everyone should read it, just keep in mind that there are several sexual scenes throughout the books.

THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS THAT EVER HAPPENED TO ME THIS YEAR. AND EVEN THOUGH THE DRAMA SERIES ISN'T COMPLETED, THIS BOOK MAKES UP FOR IT A MILLION TIMES OVER.

I'm still crying right now while typing all this. I just realized love this book more than my entire life. Yes, Bai Luo Yin and Gu Hai are a chaotic and problematic couple, but they lived their lives, since they met, as if they loved each other unconditionally.

Gu Hai... Even though you're a jerk, I love you so much. You made me very happy, even though you did some nasty things, but you made up for all those by loving Bai Luo Yin more than he could ever ask for.

Bai Luo Yin, despite the ending, you're an angel in my imaginations and you inspire me to be fearless when it comes to love. The drastic change in your character and the resolute spirit and heart that you've always had makes you deserve all of Gu Hai's love.

I love you both and I can't wait to read the second chapter of your lives.

5 STARS despite what the others are saying because of the impressive character developments. Don't judge the book if you haven't finished it yet.

The funny jokes, the vivid display of emotions, the characters, the main couple, the journey of what it's like to be a couple, the hardships, the SEX, the love and their familial relationships, the homophobia in China. Everything is phenomenal. I've never once thought about ditching this book just because of the 1-star reviews and even tho this is the longest book I've read so far, I've enjoyed EVERY SINGLE MINUTE I've spent on reading this book.

See you Gu Hai, Bai Luo Yin in the sequel. I'm dying to see you both happy in the end.

I won’t deny it—this story is chaotic, and I completely understand the criticism and low reviews. I know a lot of people dropped it because of the noncon; I get it. As someone who has read dark romance for years and doesn’t shy away from morally complex or "toxic" narratives, I still found that scene absolutely unnecessary. While I understand that such moments can sometimes serve a story, this one was written in a detailed and painfully brutal way that felt sickening to read. Its suddenness made it feel out of place, almost like a fever dream. I don’t blame anyone for dropping the book because of it. I’m not defending it, but it’s worth mentioning that the author didn’t gloss over it. I appreciated that the trauma resulting from that event became a part of the story and wasn’t just forgotten, as I’ve seen in other Danmeis/BLs.

That said, if you can move past that single scene, the story has its merits. The ML is undeniably forceful, pushy, obsessive, and overly jealous, but there were plenty of moments where his sweet side shone through in his care for the MC. He pampers him, helps his family, supports his grandparents, and ensures that the MC is always cared for, even during their fights. I found it adorable when he calls the MC his "wife" every time he wants to get his attention. He can be toxic when he's jealous, but he’s such a simp for the MC, literally willing to do anything to make him happy, even getting hurt to protect him. Maybe my standards are in the gutter, but I genuinely liked him. His plans for their future together and the slow build-up of love and care kept me invested. The fact that this story was adapted into a live-action drama speaks volumes.

It’s also worth mentioning that they’re both only 17 at the start of the story. Both come from broken families, and the ML has unresolved issues with his past, including a problematic relationship with his father. While that doesn’t excuse his behavior, it does help explain it. and let’s not forget that the MC willingly goes back to the ML on his own terms, even after everything that happened. They’re both crazy for each other. The MC was even the one who proposed marriage. Does this novel romanticize toxic relationships? Maybe, but the characters consistently try to improve for each other. They’re growing and learning to communicate, albeit at a frustratingly slow pace. Even their consensual sex scenes felt realistic—they gradually learned how to properly pleasure each other and worked through the trauma of their first time. I loved how considerate the ML became, putting real effort into pleasing his partner.

If you have the patience to survive over a hundred chapters, it’s worth it, IMO. Still, I wouldn’t recommend this to readers looking for a quick romance—this isn’t it. It’s a slow burn with many ups and downs. The story spans multiple volumes with a total of 200+ chapters, and I’m only on Book 1. I dont know how long book 2 will be, I'm scared to read it.

Just finished reading it and I'm so MAD.

I read the whole book in four days because the story was engaging, but there are so many details that feel forced. Bai Luoyin and Gu Hai endured so many hardhips, so many near death situations, and for what? For nothing at all? The ending left me speechless and in the worst way possible. Luoyin forgave Hai even when he commited literal crimes against him but he decided to leave him when he needed him the most and in the worst way possible. GH stayed underground for DAYS because he wasn't willing to give him up, so him waking up and learning BLY is gone surely isn't going to make him keep on living or giving up on him.
Their relationship is based on codependency and abusive mechanisms after all, they're not going to suddenly unlearn their toxic behaviours.

I also didn't get the rape scene at all. If GH wanted so badly to prove his "ownership" on BLY he could have done so many other things (kissing, making out, getting him to confess and letting the girl hear...) but nope, he decided on violating the person he loves.

I do not recommend.

I decided to drop it because it's a freaking 1000+ pages and I'm not gonna deliberately waste my time in this.

Outrageous, fun, emotional, impactful. Chai Jidan has a great sense of humor coupled with a versatile imagination as well as is a skilled hand at bringing a reader to tears of sadness(and laughter) with just a few lines. I loved her dark satirical sense of humor. Very emphatically a work of pure fiction made even more evident from the exaggerated , highly unrealistic scenarios, and at the same time managing to weave in some real emotions and concepts of love and life and family. The best part is of course the happy ending.

Also , definitely a guilty pleasure read given the theme.

Of course I watched the web series before and like it a lot. But the MCs never made me imagine them as the actors even once while reading. They were their own unique selves.

Started the book, because I loved the series. Wish now that I hadn’t, because it has ruined the series for me. Hoping time will erase the memory of this book, so I can safely watch the series again. The writing is actually incredible, and there are some really funny one liners. However, the content literally made me sick, and I am accustomed to problematic or triggering content.

ironically or not i started to read this book after watching the Cdrama "Addicted Heroin" (2016) that because of censorship was banned and stopped, before the first season was completed. so it just has 15 episodes, and feels like it was stopped in the middle... cause of that, i looked up the book online. well if i found Gu Hai a bit over the top in the drama, he was downright crazy-scary in the book. and i couldn't - wouldn't get past the rape scene in Chapter 128... stopped and won't(!) read anymore. that wasn't justifiable or forgivable - it wasn't just to hurt and degrade, but it was to humiliate - considering the "audience" Gu Hai arranged - sorry.. and after that they still r together - nah - inconceivable! u don't destroy a person u love like that!!!

sometimes i get the hype around a book - like with this series, from a author in a country where being gay is abnormal and shouldn't be mentioned. so she is doing groundbreaking work - but is this what homosexuality is about?!? cause it two guys, so they just roughhousing?!? the thought that some young person is reading this and thinking yeah that seems cool - nah shudder at the thought!

if u read the book - what u notice is the amount of violence that's just brushed off as "meeh whatever..." and get we r talking about hormonal teens with short tempers - full of energy and short on brains - get that and yet, justifying forcing ur wants and needs on someone and calling it caring and love is insulting. portraying affection through violence is moronic... if u love someone u don't force what u want on them, u take their feeling, likes and dislikes into consideration - u don't kidnap them and say - u will keep them prisoner and "force" them until they love u, as much as u love them - that's psychotic behavior. and Gu Hai gets away with "murder" cause his father is powerful - like he gets away with brutally bashing a kids face in (which of course the kid still survives - talk about ridiculous).

didn't want to write a lot - but i'm angry that this is what people r gushing over - yeah the drama is pretty tame in comparison - and cause of the good looking actors and the titillating scenes one can lose sight - but even there, i didn't agree or enjoy Gu Hai's militant way about getting what he wanted -it was a one man show and he pushed and pulled until he got what he wanted - the fact that Luo Yin (although not a pushover) was so passive , didn't help matters - just made them worse for him. i didn't/don't get how this is some grand love story....

description

description

description

description

description

description

if i could give it less stars I would. the only reason I finished this (and book 2) is because you know when you're watching a car crash or something equally horrible and its so bad that you can't look away? yeah that's how I felt with this. I also finished it because of the new remake (which is only watchable because they took away a lot of the insanity of the novels). 0/5, would not recommend.

The beginning was interesting enough but then half way through apparently the author just decided f*** it and just went off the rails. Once the actual “romance” started it was horrible and abusive. Half the time they barely even seem to like each other. Not to mention there’s a straight up rape scene between the two leads that basically results in no consequences, and instead almost like the victim deserved it. Seriously wtf?? I feel like only the beginning and ending of the relationship are interesting (if you skip forward to their wedding in book 2). Even outside of the romance - the main storyline - this novel is fraught with issues like blatant sexism, intolerance, and just bad writing overall. Would not recommend! Idk who on earth is giving this high ratings. I was only able to finish it out of sheer stubbornness.

THIS BOOK WAS HELLA PROBLEMATIC….I loved the series but this was just awful. The ending omg ?? Gu Yang’s character is still so confusing to me…. Did he cause all that trouble just so he can get his brother away from bai Lou yin… ?? Gu hai is also just so problematic in this book …. Like that one scene y’all know what I’m talking about the one where he injured bai Lou yin’s actual asshole …. GOD yeah I seriously don’t know if I like gu hai or not ….. also I felt like bai Lou yin’s character was just ….. whatever like he pretty much treated gu hai like shit for most of the time even when gu hai was going above and beyond for him idk this book was just too much … lastly, just want to add the smut was way too detailed lol
