Sarah Greene Mysteries #1

The Girl in the Mirror

Rate this book

Sarah, a reluctant psychic, discovers a ghost in a mirror and opens a door to the demonic.

Sarah Greene is a successful realtor who sees ghosts–and sometimes wishes she didn’t. While renovating an old house with her ex-husband, she finds a mirror haunted by a teenager’s tortured spirit.

As she sets out to discover the victim’s identity, Sarah stumbles onto something chilling. The people who built the house had a demon-worshipping son, Peter. And Sarah comes to believe he murdered the girl. But there’s more. An insidious evil is infesting the town of Dos Santos. Could this dark force be tied to Peter Moody?

For Sarah, digging into someone’s murderous past is bad enough. Awakening a demonic spirit could be deadly.

If you love supernatural horror such as The Shining and Ghost Story, you won’t be able to put down this wildly riveting series.

This is a 4.5 star read.

What an awesomely spooky start to a new dark paranormal "mystery" series. The book practically read itself it was so well paced and held the perfect proportion of thrills to chills! The next book in the series is definitely going onto my TBR list. 😊

***** Wow! Such a great book!

What a powerful, touching, and well-written story! Sarah Greene and Joe Greene are divorced. But are they really? They’re business partners, they rely on each other physically and emotionally all the time, and they still greatly enjoy their joint relaxing spells, when their jovial bantering comes out in full force.

But there’s another side to their tale. Sarah has a gift––of the occult kind. Ever since her best friend was killed back in high school she has been able to see ghosts. Ghosts that soon help her find answers to an old, unsolved murder case. A bad one. As we learn more and more about this double homicide cold case, Sarah pulls us along with her after she sees a ghost in an antique mirror. From there we’re driven headlong into an action-packed chase to find the real killer, the people involved at the time, and the victims, both in real modern time, and through paranormal means. Will revenge, old hurts, and insanity win out? You’ll just have to read this great book to find out! DEFINITELY recommended.

Having read Steven Ramirez's "Tell Me When I'm Dead" series, I knew he was an excellent writer with a real talent for horror stories. Though I'm not into the horror genre on a large scale, Stephen King is one of my favorite authors, and I would liken this author's writing ability, and his ability to tell and absorbing tale, to King's. He's that good, which is why I was pleased to learn that he had written the first book in a new series.

The premise of the book is not a new concept --Sarah Greene sees ghosts, and she is able to communicate with them. But the author puts a slant on how this plays out in ways I haven’t seen before.

Sarah and her ex-husband, Joe, are partners in a real estate and home-renovation business, and they maintain a closeness that belies the usual behavior of a divorced couple. It’s a believable scenario that enhances the story because Joe knows about Sarah's "gift" and supports her no matter how macabre or unbelievable her communication is with ghosts. The dynamics of their relationship keep the story moving as they work together to follow clues for answers to mysterious questions. Though she is strong and capable, Sarah at times experiences particularly gruesome or dangerous visits from ghosts. She is able to rely on Joe for commiseration and comfort (the kind that humorously keeps her confessing to her priest.)

They have purchased and are renovating what seems to be a haunted property. When Joe and Sarah discover a cloaked mirror in a sealed room, the tale takes a decidedly intriguing and chilling turn. When Sarah looks into the mirror, she sees the ghost of a teenage girl, who lets her know that the suspect in an old, unsolved murder--believed dead--is still alive. Because she is already working with the police on that unsolved murder, she is able to share information she receives so that the truth edges ever closer.

And what a startling revelation that truth is!

The writing is perfectly paced, so that I was engrossed in the story and kept turning the pages. Sarah Greene and Joe Greene are likeable protagonists, as are other supporting characters in their world, and the set-up for the next book in the series is perfect. No dangling, unsolved questions that compel you to buy the next book, only the expectation that another superb story is in the offing.

This was a really fun read! I would have given it 4 stars of it had been scarier. But if you're wanting a paranormal mystery, then it'll be right up your alley. With many authors thinking dark and totally messed up = interesting, the character of Sarah Greene was a wonderful change of pace - kind ,strong without being tough, and quick with her quips. She's your bestie who just happens to see ghosts! This looks to be a series, and I look forward to reading more of Sarah's adventures.

Paranormal

Good mystery weaving in the paranormal with ghosts and a 6th sense. Likable characters. I found it annoying how many times the cat maowed! Cats meow!!! The lead character, Sarah, is conflicted about her feelings for her ex husband, Joe. I foresee them getting back together. Sarah is in danger as evil follows her. Will she be able to avoid it’s clutches?

Genre: Supernatural Horror / Mystery

This reminded me of a classic supernatural horror movie with modern sensibilities. I will continue reading in the series. I like that it wrapped up all the specific plot points while still leaving the meta-story plot with lots of open ends.

There were some plot points and representation that was quite off and not in the best taste, but it was a small part of the story.

Interesting spooky story that reminded me of the TV series where the woman sees and speaks with the dead to help them move onto heaven but not until the mystery of their deaths is solved and the perpetrators are exposed.

For years, Sarah Greene kept seeing her dead friend from high school. The spirit told Sarah that she was in danger.

It started off nice, but it gets into some long and useless narrative. It made it hard to keep going. Not as interesting as I thought.

Dnf - main reason and spoilers

Spoilers

The premise of the story is interesting but the main character was annoying. The book focuses on her indiscretions with her ex-husband and her being constantly horny, blaming it on the fact that she can see ghosts.

Ok-ish. The plot was interesting. But it let me feeling that it could have been more, like something is missing. Maybe I had higher expectation.

Also, the main character's religious nature started to be pretty annoying as the plot continues, to the point it felt like full blown hypocrisy.

I love anything supernatural and murder mysteries, so I really enjoyed The Girl in The Mirror. I particularly liked the author’s writing style. Steven Ramirez writes in a way that made me feel like I was watching an episode of a murder mystery TV show.

Although the story wasn't terribly scary, there were times where I felt genuinely spooked (the occult has always made me feel uneasy) and it was rich with suspense. There were a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.

I adore Sarah. She's very relatable -witty, funny and flawed, and I really rooted for her because I connected so much with her character. Also, she likes Weezer, cats, and coffee, so we'd definitely be friends in real life!

Overall, a great read and I'm looking forward to reading the next instalment of the Sarah Greene Mysteries.

Unexpected. That is perhaps the best description of this completely enjoyable and intriguing paranormal suspense novel by Steven Ramirez. On its surface, the premise is simple: woman meets ghost, woman untangles mystery surrounding ghost, and all live happily ever after.

But the author isn't content with a simple ghost story. There are fun twists and unexpected turns, great characters, and a much-appreciated atmospheric tension (I'm a sucker for an atmosphere that is so pronounced it's practically its own character).

Set in a spooky small town in California, Sarah Greene and her ex-husband, Joe, own a realty and building company: Joe flips the houses with his crew and Sarah sells them. But when the couple discovers a strange antique mirror in the basement of their most recent purchase, a creepy, deserted home out in the country, strange things begin to happen.

This is a hard-to-put-down novel. I'm looking forward to following it up with, House of the Shrieking Woman, book two in the Sarah Greene Mysteries.
