Reed Matthews lives a quiet and structured life in Edgewood. A devout Catholic going on his sixth year as principal at Our Lady School, Reed thrives on routine. But one unplanned excursion for Chinese takeout is enough to send his meticulously-constructed world into a tailspin.

After growing up in foster care, Dominic O'Halloran decided to enter seminary in his early twenties, and he's dedicated his adult life to creating a safe space for the LGBT community. Weeks after answering the call from St. Paul's Episcopal and moving to Edgewood, Dominic finds himself face-to-face with the one person he's never been able to leave in the past--his childhood best friend.

Dominic and Reed find themselves entangled in decades old unresolved feelings and very new emotions. Reed is terrified of losing his soul, and Dominic is worried about losing his heart. But all it takes is one make-believe moment for them to realize they'd throw everything away for another chance for happiness together.

I didn't mind the daddy kink, but the story ends before it begins. The ending is not even a HFN; it's a maybe. The author states there's more to come but not yet. 🙄

I get irate when authors use free story events to write teasers. If you need this to entice readers, you're doing it wrong.

This is only the second book I’ve read by Kate Hawthorne and I’m loving her style. Don’t shy away from this one just because of its religious theme, that part takes the back seat to the development of the characters and their relationship. It’s all done quite beautifully.

There are several gorgeous quotes in A Taste of Sin, here’s my favorite

Consent isn’t stopping when you’re told no. It’s not starting unless you’re told yes.

Wonderful story!

I want more of this to give an accurate and full assessment. LOL, I really like this one and I want of full story on them. It's incredibly hot but I want the development of this story. It ends abruptly for me so I hope there is more of this couple.

A Taste of Sin is a really engaging story that explores some intense issues, but also has a lovely sweetness that left me with lots of happy feels when I was done. Building a romance that deals with religion is a tricky thing, and I think Hawthorne does a great job here handling some complicated issues delicately and in thoughtful ways. Both Dominic and Reed are religious men, but while Dominic is part of a church that (for the most part) accepts his sexuality, Reed interprets his religion as one that condemns him for being gay. The book steers clear of getting into too much theology, and focuses more on Reed’s personal struggle as he attempts to reconcile his view of Catholicism with his own growing awareness of being gay.

When these guys first reconnect, Reed is caught in this endless back and forth of desperately wanting Dominic, while at the same time feeling overwhelming guilt and terror about his attraction. For his part, Dominic wants Reed just as desperately, but he is hurt by Reed seeming to want him and then running scared. Dominic knows he needs to protect his heart, but Reed keeps coming back, again and again.

In the mood for a quick, titillating tale that will leave you yearning in the best possible way? Then look no further than Kate Hawthorne’s age gap liaison An Illicit Affair.

During a gap year between high school and college, Danny Connery is interning for his father at Connery and Chambers Design. Volunteering to work late, an accidental blunder with his father’s business partner results in some… unexpected flirting.

For Jordan Chambers, fumbled papers have never been more enticing… with Danny down on his knees in the mess. Hot, and as bothered as the Keurig percolating his brew, it’s a test of resilience not to act on his forbidden attraction to the nineteen-year-old “boy”.

When temptation is too much, Valentine’s night leads to An Illicit Affair, which leaves you desperate for another kiss in this too short story.

I didn't realize this was daddy kink, not really my thing even though it was well written, plus the age, Danny was a bit young.

This was a difficult book to read. Don't get me wrong, it was absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it to literally anyone. But I come from a very conservative, religious upbringing - Southern Baptist rather than Catholic - and the amount of guilt and shame I felt (and still feel) to this day over my sexual orientation left me feeling incredibly raw throughout most of the book. I had to put it down more times than I've ever had to put down a Kate book. But it wasn't a painful read. Just the opposite. Reading this book helped me deal with some of the things that were ingrained in me as a kid that I hadn't realized I still held on to. It took everything I was taught and flipped it on its head. And in a lot of ways, Nic's words were just as healing to me as they were to Reed.
The way Nic and Reed grew together was beautiful. I totally understood Nic's hesitance to be involved with Reed until he figured himself out, and I sympathized with how difficult it was for Reed to let go of the guilt and the shame he carried for who and how he loved. There's one particular scene that addressed him letting go, and it was the most emotional sex scene I've ever read.
It was easy to see how the D/s dynamic would play out with the two of them. Not because it was poorly written, but because the characterization was just that good. Reed submits himself to the rules of the Catholic church because he craves that structure. Dominic, on the other hand, is shown to be a leader almost immediately. He enjoys being in charge of his congregation's well-being. And the way those personalities manifested themselves in the bedroom was explosive and intensely erotic.
I have a fairly small list of books that I re-read, because there's always something new coming out that I want to get my hands on, but this is definitely going on my list. Nic and Reed were emotional and sexual and filled with tension from beginning to end. You won't be disappointed by their story.

A Taste Of Sin is angsty. Like so angsty. I wasn't very far into my reading when I messaged my best friend like "this book makes me want to drink." There's so much tension between these two characters my heart was both bleeding for them and was frustrated with their back and forth.

Reed is very lost. He lives a structured life and tries to pretend he's content in it. It's not until Dominic walks back into his life that he realizes he's been lying to himself for over twenty years. For Reed, it's hard to come to terms with his desires and his religion. He absolutely broke my heart and pissed it off at the same time. His hot and cold, while understandable, was unfair to both of them. Reed does a lot of growing, a lot of thinking, a lot of accepting in this book and it's admirable because the decisions he has to make aren't easy ones. Especially when you know deep down that it's okay to feel the way you do but have yet to come to terms with what those feelings actually mean.

Dominic, oh Dominic is just everything. All I'll say is that if he were my priest I sure as hell would go to church more often than I do. Dominic has loved Reed since they were kids. He spent years hurting for the boy he lost, only to come face to face with him after finally closing off that part of his heart. I felt for him so much. He loved Reed but he didn't want to get hurt by Reed. And I didn't blame him. No one wants to get their heart broken.

These two men had so much going against them. Even though Reed wasn't sure about anything when it came to Dominic, he still followed his desires. He clung to his misguided faith, but in doing so he let it lead him to what was truly important to him. Seeing him learn and grow with and without Dominic was special. Because he was able to get to a place where he realized he could have both. Where he was allowed to have both.

I think that's one of the things that causes me to stay away from the other priest books. The back and forth, the use of faith to push the character one way or the other. While A Taste Of Sin is not preachy at all. It does have some very good points about faith that I am glad are in there. With Reed's struggles and eventual acceptance of himself, the reader can see that it may be possible for them to come to terms with their life. That may not be the intention, but it's there and I am so grateful it is.

Kate Hawthorne wrote a book featuring a rather sensitive subject matter and she turned it into a love story about two men that left me speechless. It was angsty, so angsty I thought I would explode before any of the good stuff happened. It made me cry, in public no less. Besides the fact that Reed and Dominic took their sweet time getting on the same page, this book was brilliantly thought out and smartly written.

A Taste Of Sin is book one in the Secrets in Edgewood series and I cannot wait to find out what else this town has in store for us.

Nic and Reed were foster kids at the same home, until Reed was adopted. Now, 20 years later, a surprise encounter makes the feelings they had for each other when they were 14 and 13 years old surface yet again and blossom. But Reed is not out, matter of fact, he barely acknowledges that he might be gay. And even if he admitted it, there's the small fact that his work as a principal at a Catholic school might be threatened if his boss learns of their involvement.

I liked Nic and Reed, although their relationship felt a tad forced and I wanted to slap some sense into them a few times. Still, they had chemistry and were hot together.

I would've liked the book more, if there had been more than a HFN in the end. Anyway, it was a good, solid, angsty and hot read that I have no trouble recommending.

Christopher Rourke did a good job with the narration. There were some parts that felt a tad flat, but overall, it was an enjoyable performance.

I really like Kate Hawthorne's Giving Consent series, but everything else I've read has made me feel icky. I don't like how this relationship began. I wouldn't mind the age difference, whatever it is (we're never told how old Jordan is), except that he's also a boss and he comes on to Danny at work.

Beautiful sorrow

I grew up in the Catholic tradition and this book was, I think, an accurate portrayal of what it must feel like to be gay and devoutly catholic. Beautifully written with Kate Hawthorne’s trademark insight into her characters, there is definite sorrow in both Reed and Dominic’s stories. Another beautiful story from Kate, I liked this as much as I liked the Colors Between Us.

Not bad. The boss messing with his partner's son in the office. Starting on Valentine's. Danny likes the 'daddy' kink Jordan provides. They know it can't last because of Danny's dad, but plan to have fun while it lasts.
Not one of my more favored 'kinks' but the story isn't bad. Steamy.

So much angst! And unfairness about faith, religion and being gay. The HEA is very satisfying, and worth the torment both characters are put through.

🎧 Narrated by Christopher Rourke
A beautiful narrate for this story for the characters. Although their voices weren't different I enjoyed the book.

A great start as the two characters re-meet after not seeing each other since there foster care days.
Dominic had always been in love with Reed, now being grown up their situation had changed. Dominic aka Nic hadn't been taken into a foster home where as Reed had. Reed's life was with the church and fought his feelings for men until Nic comes back into his life.
I loved the angst with both of them for these reasons. A betrayal comes up in the storyline that rocks there world, and time for lasting words to fix runs out.
Forgive me Father for I have sinned but dam you have some hot hot sexy scenes. Nic has whickered sexy moves install for Reed as alpha personality in the bedroom.
Includes betrayal, sexy times, a strong connection, homophobic church members, virgin, and angst for a happy for ending.
I really really liked this book written by the author.
Principal Reed has some decisions to make regarding a few things but one is taken out of his hands.
Father Dominic yearns for someone who doesn't know what he wants, and tries to protect his heart.

There is nothing better than a boy finding his new Daddy. Jordan and Danny find themselves thrown together on Valentines day and boy do the sparks ever fly!!! this was a quick hot read and I honestly hope Kate writes more of these two.

Merged review:

This was a book I was nervous to read based on the whole priest aspect. I am do happy to say that I was so wrong to worry about this book. As always with Kate Hawthorne the book was so well written and researched that I found myself quickly falling for Nic and Reed and I felt their struggle deeply. This book left such an impact on me that I can not wait for more in the series and I hope for small glimpses of Nic and Reed in future books.

I love good daddy kink. This just didn’t work for me. There was no connection and the whole book just made me feel uncomfortable. I don’t think this author’s books are for me. I enjoyed the book she coauthored with EM Denning, but her other books just haven’t connected with me. And that’s ok.

Will religion tear them apart? (an audio review)

Reed and Dominic were in foster care together. They were as close as brothers could be and their worlds were torn apart when Reed was adopted. Dominic never heard from him again.

Years later, Reed is the principal of a Catholic School. He lives a solitary life, pushing down his homosexual urges. Image is everything, and the church is very clear on its teachings. Being gay is a mortal sin. Then one day he encounters Dominic in a local fast-food joint and he’s stunned. He’s never forgotten his foster brother, but he also never expected to see him again. Especially in this town far from where they’d met.

Dominic is a priest, although not in the Catholic church. He is a respected member of his community - a leader in his congregation. He is also shocked to see Reed, although there is some resentment there. When Reed was adopted, he disappeared and Nic never heard from him again. He was hurt. Really hurt. Only later in the book is it revealed what happened behind the scenes.

The two men are attracted to each other and while one is free to pursue the relationship, the other is forbidden. Well, perhaps forbidden is too strong a word. But Reed knows he’ll lose his job. A job that means everything to him. Or so he’s always believed. As he struggles with his attraction, Nic feels like he’s being taken advantage of. Reed wants all the benefits of a secret relationship (read: sex – a lot of sex) but wants none of the responsibility. Nic has no interest in being in the closet. He’s out and wants his parishioners to know it’s okay to be gay. He encourages the kids to start an LGBT group and is pleasantly surprised when Reed sends a young woman his way for spiritual guidance. The young woman believes she’s gay, and there’s no place for her in Reed’s world.

Yet as many problems that plague the relationship, neither man can let go. As Reed says to Nic, “I just want to be allowed to love you.” Basically a plea for understanding. When the two get some time alone, it’s clear they were meant to be together. But then they return to Edgewood and it looks like their relationship will be on the down low again. I might have despaired a bit. But this is a romance, thank goodness. This book struck a chord with me – two men who just want to be allowed to love each other. I struggle to tolerate churches where flock members are rejected because of who they are. Needless to say, I was interested in how this book was going to find a happy resolution.

I’m intrigued about where this series is going, and will eagerly anticipate the next book. Finally I have to mention Christopher Rourke. He’s a new-to-me narrator and I have to say I enjoyed his performance. I hope he narrates any subsequent books in the series.

I was given a free audio verion by the author and the GRR arc team for review.

Story 4 stars

I really enjoyed this story. It's a slow burn with lots of push and pull for the first half while Reed comes to terms with his feelings for his ex foster brother who he runs into again. Feelings that conflicts with his work as a Catholic principal. He never became an actual priest, believing one day he would marry. He is however still single and still a virgin waiting for marriage and very Catholic. Dominic on the other hand is also a Religious leader but one that is out and helps gay teens and helps Reed realize he shouldn't have to choose.

This was a beautifully, heartfelt story of second chance love and love that is meant to be that endures all. I loved the 2 main characters. They had great chemisty and were both well developed and likeable. Very well written. Also, it had high level heat with elements of d/s, dirty talk and mild bdsm. 🔥

I'm not religious what so ever and don't like when a book is too in your face verse preaching and this wasn't like that all. So don't let the topic scare u off. I would definitely recommend this book.

Note: I'll also add I read over some reviews before I read this and it seems as though a lot of them referenced a short incomplete version. This book is definitely complete. Also, some reviews that were posted for this book referenced a different couple entirely so I think there's some mix up there. So don't let that discourage u from reading it. It's a great read.

Reading 4 stars

The narrators voice was pleasant and he read at a pleasant pace. He used slight voice differences for the 2 MCs but not overly distinctive but easy enough to follow if you're paying attention. The higher tone for the female side characters were obvious though which was nice.

I have a really hard time rating this.
On one hand I loved the premise: Two young boys in foster care, best friends and on the brink of ‘more’, lose sight of each other when one of them gets adopted.
Now, twenty years later, they meet each other again - both having turned to religion, on different sides of the town and different denominations. (Is that even the right word? Obviously, I don’t know a thing about religion.) Reed is the principal of a catholic school and Dominic a priest of the local episcopalian church.
Having missed each other badly for twenty years, they still can’t deny their attraction to each other. And while Nic is completely fine with that, it poses huge problems for Reed, whose faith forbids love between men.
So far, so interesting.

The problem for me was, again, the authors penchant for back and forth between “I want you. But I can’t have you. But I need you. But it can’t ever be.” And so on and so forth. It’s hard to describe, but it almost reads like they wrote the same overdramatic scene several times and not being able to decide for one version, put them all into one story.
It really irritated me that just when you thought they’d talked it out and finally made up their mind to pursue this thing, one of them would be all dramatic about having one last night together. Or having his heart broken.

There are so many sex scenes, that at one point I started skim-reading. And I usually like sex scenes - if they add to the story. Most of them did not, though. I felt like the one in the epilogue was especially unnecessary, though I feel like the whole epilogue didn’t add much.

Honestly, the whole book is double the length it needs be. I’d wish that Kate Hawthorne were either okay with writing shorter books and didn’t try to force every story into a full-length novel, or started to flesh out her plot and characters.

Dominic and Reed are foster brothers and best friends who are beginning to feel new emotions for each other, when Reed is adopted and moved away. Reed becomes a devout Catholic and takes a job as a principal at his church's school. Dominic remains with his foster parents and grows up to become a priest in the Episcopal faith. When the two end up in the same town, they realize that their feelings for each other are still present and stronger than ever, but they each look at this differently. Nic believes that God made them the way they are, and He would never condemn their love; but Reed believes that acting on their feelings would be a sin that would see them burn in Hell.
This story is painful and angsty, as Nic tries to protect himself but can't deny Reed for long. Reed, meanwhile, tries to reconcile his feelings with his religious beliefs, to figure out how to be happy and faithful at the same time.
The characters are very well written here, and the sex scenes are incredibly hot. The story is engrossing and heartbreaking, and readers should definitely keep tissues close by.
As I read this, my heart hurt for Reed, but I also had several moments of wanting him to just leave Dominic alone. Nic had loved Reed for almost his entire life, and he was hurt over and over by Reed's indecision. I was both happy and emotionally drained by the time I reached the ending. This is a wonderful book by an author who always makes me think. I highly recommend this book!

Reed and Dominic's passionate second chance at love took my breath away with its intensity. Both men are deeply religious, but while Dominic embraced a more accepting form of religion, Reed's faith is in direct conflict with his sexuality. The internalized agony Reed goes through in this story is almost unbearable at times. I'm not particularly religious myself, but that didn't stop my own heart from getting ripped to shreds as I experienced Reed's aching fear and denial. Most of this story revolved around Reed slowly, painfully coming to terms with his faith and sexuality, and what a seriously angsty journey that was. Dominic, in turn, has been desparately in love with Reed for twenty years. When he and Reed finally did reconnect, the dizzying chemistry and longing was so potent and pent-up that neither man was ready for it. When these two did finally come together, their encounters were just as explosive and incredible as I had anticipated. Just when I thought things were looking up for this couple, a devastating loss turned Dominic and Reed's world upside down once more. The hurt/comfort themes are strong in this story, but for every ounce of pain and suffering, there were equal amounts of love and passion. By the time I reached the end, all of my senses were completely consumed by the powerful love Reed and Dominic shared.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

I enjoyed this new series from Kate Hawthorne. Something different from what I have read before but definitely one you can read in one sitting, really falling into the relationship between Reed and Dominic, their on as children and the one they have now. Time has changed both men and they have different beliefs as to their stance on relationships with the same sex. This causes huge internal battles for Reed and Kate has written them well, allowing us to feel right alongside with him.
There's real struggles for both men but when they are together the heat jumps off of the page, clearly showing how good they are together but the mind can always cause us problems. I enjoyed the interactions between them as well as with other characters, both positive and negative. The story moves along at a good pace and keeps your attention throughout.
I'm not religious in any way so was a little wary of it with both MC's being involved in their own way but whilst it is important and a part of their daily lives it isn't being shoved towards the reader.
I definitely recommend giving this book a go, I wasn't sure and am so glad I did

This was the first book in the Secrets of Edgewood series and it was a mixture of angst and hope with an intense romance. Reed struggles with his Catholic faith and his attraction and love for Dominic. Dominic struggles with how he and Reed were torn apart when they were teenagers. Both men have their emotional and spiritual issues that were painful to watch, but the author never lets us lose hope for the main characters. I liked watching how each man confronted their pain and moved forward towards love and happiness. Along with the emotional journey, there was some amazing and really hot sex scenes that incorporated some D/s and other kinky elements. I thought this book was well written and really touching.

The audiobook was narrated by Christopher Rourke who did a great job. He had a wonderful performance and voiced all the characters perfectly. I had no trouble following along with the story. The audiobook production was well done and really enjoyable.
