The Deviants America – 1897 For Logan Elster, life was hard enough. With a gambling drunkard of a father and a mother who had to lie about her bruises, there’s only so much a sixteen year old can do. But when he comes home to witness another beating, he flies into a rage and discovers something about his ancestry that he never knew before. He has inherited a frightening gift from his grandfather and has become a werewolf, inadvertently destroying everything he holds dear. In search of the only man who can help him, Logan finds more than just a mentor in the small town of Devia, Alabama. He finds a community of men just like him. A community of werewolves. But the community is in far more danger than their leader, Robert Croxen, will ever admit to. An industrial revolution is sweeping the nation and the railroad has come to lower Alabama. Devia is in the perfect place, but Robert won’t sell a single acre, no matter the price. Desperation drives the owner of the railroad to investigate what Robert’s hiding and what his spies find is something out of the old world fairytales. Question is, what will he do about it?

I always love when the author comes back to these stories of origin for this family/pack we have come to know and love. These stories are so emotional and full of pain and joy and all the in between. Sometimes they sound like they hate what they are and how long they survive and then you get the flip side but I guess we all do that. This is a great story filled with hope and destruction Robert who endangered all those lives out of pride. Here we have the arrogance of some that feel the need and power to destroy the lives of those they don't understand. This author brings us brilliant stories of love, power, ignorance, acceptance and the differences people use as an excuse to destroy what they don't understand. The railroad who decided that their railroad was more important than the people and their desire. This story isn't an easy read like most of this author's work it is one that reveals the hidden (and sometimes not so subtle) and the seen actions of a few. It show the inherent human nature which we are not always proud of, to destroy what we don't understand instead of discovering it and accepting it for it's differences. This story is full of pain and sorrow but even deviants have a hope for some kind of future.
