With good grace I gave 3 stars. Because the writing and worldbuilding was nice, overall I enjoyed it. Plus it's YA, which always is a bit over the top with power of teens. But oh, there were so many plotholes! It made me furious in the end. Not talking about magical clothes and crowns shifting with the dragons or so, it's a fantasy book, they can make possible whatever they want.

I will name a few points below, but mark them as spoilers as many are only coming to light at the end. This list is long but surely not complete, only what I remember right now.

1. Things contradicting each other constantly
a) mostly they stated masters are dragons controlling at least 2 elements, but Kaelan had to control all 4 to become a master
b) stating you find your dragon form before you are 15 or you are "just" a dragonblooded tamer. Then Lasaro shifting with 18. Then back to you can't shift after 15. In the end Kaelan shifting after all
c) Kaelans dragon oath to her father, saying she will only be loyal if its ethical, which states the whole time until the very end where he wants her to kill the whole royal family for the throne and her oath is still binding her
d) Mordon flying over the battle at end of book 1 but beginning of book 2 nobody noticed him and he was still saying he didn't "come back yet". Why was he flying over the city then?
e) this applies to point 5 as well. It was revealed the only thing Mordon ever did to become declared a rogue was the tapestry with the dying royal family found in his quarters. Then why was he known as the worst enemy of the country ever, people telling horror stories about him, like in the first chapter the boys scaring Kaelan by using his name. But nobody ever heard the name of his tamer who obviously did worse things
f) Mordon giving Kaelan an iron dagger in the beginning, while it was later revealed that iron is poisonous for dragons. Also, would he choose that weapon for his kid while it was his tamers weapon? g.1) also applying to point 5. Stating Mordon couldn't fight the General because of their bond as dragon and tamer (sealed by a dragon oath). But the old tapestry showed them fighting as dragons. Later Mordon couldn't fight him because of the oath. But he did take the potion killing him and bringing him back afterwards. So shouldn't all oaths be gone?
g.2) Kaelan and Lasaros bond did break nearly several times. Why did the bond between Mordon and the general never break after centuries?
g.3) Kaelan learned in book 2 to get magic from any other dragon close by. Then she forgot it, only used Lasaro, until the very end for killing the general.
g.4) Kaelan could only get magic from dragons nearby, even Lasaro couldn't be too far away. But the general was in Unger while using Mordons power.
g.5) The general could wield Mordons power all along, why wouldn't he just kill Kaelan and Lasaro by boiling their blood
h) Kaelan saving the city in book 1, getting celebrated. All is forgotten 1 week later in book 2. Ok maybe they still mistrust, fine. But then she saved ALL of dragonkind, getting celebrated. And then again in book 3 all was forgotten and she got hated again?
i) In book 2 Kaelan didn't connect at all to the element of earth, but could at least spark a small fire in her hand. In book 3 she learned earth but magically had no connection to fire any longer.
j) Stating there is no reference to any tamer ever dying with their dragon or getting sick with them. Same time as stating don't make your bond too strong and that this warning usually only 3rd year students need. But during the sickness nearly all first year tamers getting sick together with their dragons and some dying.
k) Big big problem with dragons are only allowed to marry each other - except for when the prince and his sister get married of to humans in Unger?

2. Sometimes the protagonists were extremely overpowered while on other points being very weak.
a) Kaelan immediately being able to beam once she found the lines
b) Kaelan in general mastering everything on the spot, having super strong magical abilities, but in some battles hiding useless behind Lasaro
c) Kaelan was able to control others and use the golden tongue, but only in situation were she felt like it. Sometimes she decided she doesn't want to do it because of her honour, on other occasions it was randomly ok, sometimes she didn't even think of it.
d) several points in the book state that normal humans couldn't stand against a dragon, they just didn't want to hurt anyone. But once they fought, the dragons had many struggles using up their powers very fast.
e) Kaelan had basically no training in the school at all (first only being allowed in the kitchen, then no school because everybody was sick). So she struggled to keep up with the others in book 2, while on other occasions she even helped Dryer pass some tests, because of her natural this-shouldnt-be-possible tamer abilities.

3. The intelligence of many headmasters, royals, often the protagonists or people in general had to be extremely low, that they acted sooo stupid or never noticed anything while it was plain obvious.
a) How the hell did nobody think about Lasaro just marrying Kaelan so both will sit on the throne? Obvious solution at book 1 but he only had the idea once she killed herself?
b) Unger poisoned the whole akademy and palace, many dragons died, but they not only didn't do anything against it, taking it not seriously, afterwards they still said they are not involved in the war?
c) Dragon eggs just stopping from hatching and nobody ever checked if there was poison somewhere?? While going nearly extinct??
d) The queen and her royal council obviously being horrible rulers, everybody hating them, but she didn't do anything to change it. Tho she thought about putting her 18 y.o. on the throne who would change the entire system.
e) The poison in book 2 was only in the akademy walls and the palace walls. So all dragons outside of the capital wouldn't get sick. If you have an epidemic you wouldn't call people back into the city but let them be outside. Once dragons went away they would get healthy again. But not only did they refuse to say anybody was really sick, they also called everybody in to get sick as well?
f) they're making kids, mostly 15-18 years old, doing deadly manoeuvres in training after 6 months which you should only do after 3 years. After many times with the normal training pupils hurting themselves or nearly getting killed. And then handing them weapons and graduating them.
g) randomly expelling tamer students for failing 1 test, while others didn't even have a dragon
h) People always assuming Mordon plots together with Unger while it would make no sense. He only cares about dragons, Unger doesn't have dragons. They are 2 complete different threats.
i) them "forgetting" the spot of the huge stone figures with immense power, and having those lines for beaming, that is very close to the akademy
j) the whole village of Kaelan couldn't see the difference between a dark brown giant rogue dragon, eating their sheep for weeks, and Lasaro, a small grey dragon. Kaelan even stated they would see the difference between him and Mordon because they are not similar. But the rogue who was looking similar to Mordon? Nope.

4. Characters and plottwists showcased as important were just simply .. forgotten later in the series?
a) Stikes, the boy who searched through Kaelans closet. Yeah he was named a spy in the end but it was kinda random
b) Kaelan being best friends with Drya in the beginning but never talking to her again in book 2 and 3
c) Freya being named as heir. No consequences and got changed immediately after the fight
d) Kaelan never using her 4 daggers, former weapon of the General
h) the tapestry from Mordons room, the sight never seemed to come true? Was it him or the general in the tapestry? Who did even weave it?
i) What was the graduation of the akademy for ? For the oaths between tamers and dragons? Still no clue why.
j) The headmasters holding them back (i.e. staying in the tapestry or bonding to strongly). Kaelan questions it and ignoring it, but it was never really clear why the warning. Mordon stated because they didn't want Tamers to become dragons, but both examples wouldn't lead to that anyhow.
k) Mordon stating there was iron poison in the akademy before he became declared a rogue and they never found out who it was.
l) not sure if it counts, but when Mordon made the statement about not loving her mother and having other kids, it was heavily clued this was a lie. Tho it was never spoken of again.
m) the fake healer from Unger from book 2 simply gone in book 3. It was hinted the general was in her shadow, but also that it was a young woman, what about the real one? All a bit unclear.
n) why did the family move so often when Kaelan was a kid, she asked the question several times but it was never answered

5. A few things just didn't make sense overall
a) Lasaro having to say a dragon oath to the akademy council not to talk about the war. But he is the prince, possible heir to the throne
b) Why wouldn't Lasaro be allowed to marry Kaelan because she had no dragon form, it was clear her blood was much more dragon than his
c) when most kids shift before 15 and then go to the akademy, shouldn't the kids in their first year be much younger than Kaelan and Lasaro?
d) Spike appearing as a peasant and immediately becoming a student, while Kaelan was in the kitchen because they didn't accept her even with proof
e) How could the dragons just ignore the war with the humans when most of them were legit partly human and their families lived in the kingdom, therefore would be killed?
f) who the hell ruled during the war in book 3 while Ungers king was dead and the general was magically beamed away
g) even if Lasaro had no dragon form until 18 years old, why did he never go to the dragon akademy to train as a tamer? Seems like his siblings went there latest with 15, completing the school takes at least 3-4 years. And he just ... chilled at home instead?
h) Kaelans tamer clothes being enchanted to shift with her to dragon form. Why would you put spells on clothes of pupils that shouldn't be able to shift.
i) this also fits to point 1. the eggs in the basement of the school. Kaelan sensing in book 1 they were healthy, but in book 3 its revealed they were slowly poisened for a century. The thing that doesn't make sense tho - where the hell are their parents? Book 1 says if a dragon lays an egg she must stay in dragon form until it hatches (no clue why). But the parents are gone and the babies just randomly collected in a basement.
j) The fight with the general at the very end, at the stone dragon spot. The general was a Terra, so should be powered much more by the spot. Tho it didn't seem to have any influence.
k) maybe point 4. The red dragon book Kaelan loved as a kid and the letter from Mordon for her to go to the akademy. He just left it there before she was born and her mother and grandma ignored it until she roared? Did they think they could hide from her that she was the purest dragonblood in centuries? What even was the book? Why would Mordon even leave before she was born when he was setting all his hope into his kid becoming the ruler?
l) in general why did Mordon hate the royals so much and was stern that only his kid could be a good ruler. Wasn't he basically only interested in her producing offspring? Couldn't he just impregnated a few 100 human women then?

6. The simple amount of fights they nearly died, having no power left, then doing more moves using their last bit of power, not succeeding, no power left, another move using their last bit of power ...

Eine der besten Buchreihen, die ich seit langem gelesen habe! Ich bin durch Zufall auf die Bücher gestoßen und nachdem ich einmal angefangen hatte zu lesen, konnte ich gar nicht mehr aufhören!

Kurze Zusammenfassung der ersten Kapitel:

Der Hauptcharakter Kaelan hat es nicht leicht. Als armes Bauernmädchen, das sich selbst sowie ihre todkranke Mutter und ihre Großmutter versorgen muss und dazu der Königsfamilie - also den Drachen - treu ergeben ist, muss sie in ihrem kleinen Dorf viele Probleme überwinden. Dazu kommt, dass sie eines Tages auf dem Markt vor Wut brüllt und ihr das Geheimnis über ihre Herkunft enthüllt wird. Ihr Vater war ein Drache! Somit hat Kaelan die Voraussetzungen, an der Akademie von Alveria als Zähmerin aufgenommen zu werden. Und nicht nur das, ihr Vater ist Mordon, der berüchtigste Schurke, den es gibt. Nachdem sie ihrer Mutter verspricht, sich an der Akademie mit einem Drachen zu verbinden und diesen mitzubringen, damit er sie heilen kann, macht sie sich auf den Weg.
Auf ihrer Reise zur Akademie trifft sie zum ersten Mal einen geheimnisvollen Fremden, der ihr hilft, auch wenn Kaelan nicht weiß, wieso. Man trifft ihn im Laufe der Handlung noch wieder, obwohl ich mir schon am Anfang denken konnte, wer er ist.
Zur selben Zeit wie Kaelan macht Prinz Lasaro sich auf den Weg zur Akademie. Er ist der jüngste Sohn der Königin und hat es immer noch nicht geschafft, seine Drachengestalt anzunehmen. Da er als Thronfolger eingesetzt werden will, muss er jedoch lernen, seine Drachengestalt beherrschen zu können und sich mit einem Zähmer verbinden. Dort kommt dann Kaelan ins Spiel.
Tatsächlich treffen die beiden kurz bevor sie die Akademie erreichen aufeinander. Kaelan wird von Drachen angegriffen und ihr Anblick löst in Lasaro etwas aus, das zu seiner ersten Verwandlung führt. Sie treffen eine Abmachung. Kaelan wird seine Zähmerin und schwört ihm die Treue, dafür wird er ihr einen Gefallen erfüllen.

An diesem Moment beginnt die wohl abenteuerlichste Reise, die man sich nur vorstellen kann! Die beiden müssen viele Hürden zusammen überwinden. Nicht nur, dass Kaelan aufgrund ihrer Abstammung zuerst gar nicht als Zähmerschülerin an der Akademie akzeptiert wird. Es bestehen Spannungen zwischen Alveria und dem benachbarten Königreich Unger, die zu einem Krieg führen können. Außerdem verlieben sich Kaelan und Lasaro ineinander, wobei er als Prinz nicht aus Liebe sondern aus politischen Gründen heiraten muss. Nicht zu vergessen, dass Hochzeiten zwischen Drachen und ihren Zähmern generell nicht akzeptiert werden. Wenn in Mitten all dessen noch herauskommt, dass Kaelans Vater Mordon ist und dieser auftaucht und Kaelan zwingt, Geheimnisse vor Lasaro zu haben, ist das Chaos perfekt. Natürlich gibt es noch viele weitere Herausforderungen, die die beiden bewältigen müssen. Trotz allem hält ihre Liebe zueinander!

Achtung, ab hier persönliche Meinung mit Spoilern!!

Ich habe Kaelan und Lasaro vom ersten Moment an geliebt, auch wenn beide sich im Laufe der drei Teile häufig dumm anstellen und ihr Vertrauen oft herausgefordert wird. Zuerst ihre Herkunft betreffend, dann wegen ihres Vaters Mordon, dem sie trotz allem vertrauen will. Dies ist für alle und insbesondere Lasaro schwer zu akzeptieren. Jedoch überstehen sie alle Hürden gemeinsam. Jedes Mal, wenn sie einander geholfen haben, wenn wieder jemand in der Klemme steckte, hat mein Herz schneller für dieses Paar geschlagen. Ich habe mich mit ihnen gefreut und mit ihnen gelitten. Umso schöner finde ich es, dass sie ein Happy End bekommen haben! Und dass Kaelan ihre Drachengestalt findet. Schon als Mordon es das erste Mal erwähnte, wusste ich, dass sie es schaffen wird. Und dass dies der Grund sein wird, wieso sie Lasaro doch heiraten kann. Meine größte Überraschung: Mordon. Er war nie der Schurke, für den ihn alle gehalten haben. In den letzten Kapiteln wurde er mir sogar sympathisch und ich habe mich sehr gefreut, dass Kaelan ihren Vater gefunden hat und es so etwas wie eine zögerliche Vater Tochter Beziehung zwischen den beiden gibt. Gerne hätte ich mehr über sie gelesen! Genauso wie über Kaelan und Lasaro. Immerhin ist Lasaro jetzt König und Kaelan eine Meisterin an der Akademie.

Es ist schade, dass diese wundervolle Buchreihe schon zu Ende ist! Ich würde gerne noch mehr über die Charaktere, die mir sehr ans Herz gewachsen sind, lesen. Ich habe schon gesehen, dass es eine Fortsetzung gibt, aber es wird nicht dasselbe sein, wenn jemand Anderes im Vordergrund steht.

I listen to a lot of books especially when I do my 3 mile walks. It gives me time and space to fully enjoy all the books I listen too. This series is one of the best youth dragon series I have read. I could feel the magic all around me. The first book really gets things moving and your soo frustrated as you see the inequality among the people. The second book leaves you with more questions and very few answers. At the beginning of the 3rd I had a fleeting thought about the mysterious terra rogue dragon. And I totally called it! Made my husband laugh so hard when I started doing a happy dance on our walk. While I figured out the ending I could figure out how Ava would get there.
Beautiful, well thought out series. I loved it! I would recommend the series to youth and dragon lovers!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. Being a teenager is rough whether you're a dragon or human, or rich or poor. The adventures of a peasant girl and a future king as the team together as Tamer and Dragon. Despite so many against them, they forge on to change their country for the better of everyone. A very enjoyable series, the characters are unique, adding to the suspense filled plot in this action filled, and at times humourous tale.

Great dragon series; recommended!

I enjoyed Kaelan and Lasaro's story, their growth as individuals and as a couple considering their vastly different backgrounds, and the potential ramifications of the decisions they had to make. The ending for them and Kaelan's father was perfect, making the concluding book of the trilogy a pleasure to read.

The Algeria Dragon Akademy First 3 books!

I really liked this story and the Dragons in it. A story about trust and respect for each other. A love so strong and a young couple who made this story so awesome.Looking forward to the next 3 books!!

Great character development, good and interesting idea and plot, and overall a great fun read. A series that is great for those times you just want a book to relax and get away from it all. Loved the series and am now reading some other series by the same author.

Worth a read

Entertaining read but a little predictable in parts. I would read other books by Ava Richardson as I enjoyed her style of writing.
