Rate this book
"An absolute epic of imagination...an extraordinary and inventive adventure!"

The Land of Imagination is more real than you think.

When an Imaginary Friend—an IF—is lost to the fantastical realm, it’s up to Colemine Slawson to find him and bring him home. Guided by a gunslinger, they’ll journey through the ever-shifting landscape of pretend on their quest. But the dark force of the kingdom’s ruler is spreading throughout the Boundarylands—the presence of real-world children threatens the Royal’s very existence, and he will stop at nothing to bring them down.

In Part I of this extraordinary epic of imagination, Colemine and his classmates are introduced to a strange new teacher and the mysterious IF Project, which will change their lives forever and open the door to a world of wonder and magic, and send them tumbling into a dark and whimsical adventure.

Has a dash of Magic School Bus and Sideways school, imagination (of course) and a lotta snark

Love it! This is a short, quick read, but really has me excited for whatever comes next. Clayton Smith has a snappy, fun and sometimes scarily insightful writing style. If you were that kid with an old soul, Colemine (the main kid) is a deeply relatable.

I’m not sure if this is aimed at kids but I (full grown adult...who also happens to love children’s books) can say I enjoyed it. If you like any of Smith’s other works, you’ll like it.

Ooh, also reminds me a bit of Roald Dahl books — kids at the center but with a hint of darkness. If you love imaginative, well written spec fic, this is great (While you’re here, I also recommend Tiffany Tsao’s The Oddfits).

Fabulous, imaginative and magical!

The only problem with this story is that it is too short. What a wonderful concept! The IF Project should be a mandatory school project. It’s a short magical tale of imagination, compassion and friendship. For children of all ages from 2 to 101! I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of the series ♥️

If only IFs could exist

What a strong start to a series. I couldn't help but think it felt a little like what might have been if Neil Gaiman had written Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. I can completely visualize and relate to the children in the book, especially the protagonist, Colemine. I will begin the second book immediately...I need to know what happens next!

Great writing as usual

Being a huge fan of Mr. Smith"s other works, especially the Apocolypticon books, I'll read anything he writes. Once again, he surprises me and delights me with his imagination and wordplay. Off we go into the Boundarylands....

Fun and easy read

A great start to a new series. Very imaginative and a fast read. I was immediately drawn into Colemine’s story and can’t wait to find out what’s next for him and his group of “friends.”

Another great one

Such a huge fan of this author! There’s never one book/short story that disappoints. The concept for the story is great, and I can’t wait to read book two. If only it wasn’t so short but all great books go by fast.
