Leadership: The Multiplier Effect

Rate this book
As 9-5 morphs into 24/7, it brings mounting pressures and new rules. Your life is full-on, relentless and exhausting and worse still, it's zipping by in a blur. It's easy to end up careering from one crisis to another, buzzed up on sugar and coffee, existing from one holiday to the next.

The leader's job is to squeeze more from less, but most leaders feel they can't possibly work any harder and are sick to death with being told to work smarter. So where next? The answer is to use the multiplier effect to transform your leadership style.

Good emotions spread far wider than we realise. A good leader who is inspired and inspiring will spread good feelings throughout his team. But it won't stop there. They in turn will pass good feelings on to their colleagues, clients and customers, who will pass on positive emotions in turn. The multiplier effect is the organic set of positive emotions which flow out in ripples from good leadership. This book shows how to lead well by being the secret ingredient in your team's everyday happiness - just by making them feel good and empowering them to pass it on.

The Multiplier Effect is crammed with the latest thinking on leadership, strengths, positive psychology, purpose, employee engagement, coaching, emotional intelligence and 'life', supplemented with anecdotes, pithy quotes and asides that help bring the content to life.

And to save you time, the book's central message is Your job as a leader is NOT to inspire people. Your job as a leader is to BE INSPIRED.

I didn't find this quite as inspiring as I should have. Andy's book The Art of Brilliance is so inspiring that I hold high hopes for every other book of his. I found that the messages in Leadership were sometimes lost in the thousands of jokes and analogies. Lots to enjoy though.

As a person with over 17 years experience in public service leadership I have read a lot of leadership books. This book has changed my thinking in a positive way in way that no other book has done. As well as being a hugely enjoyable read (not a common theme in leadership books) I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in really opening up their leadership thinking. I have already bought a copy as a present for another member of my leadership team.

This is not your average leadership book! It’s a refreshing, entertaining read that inspires and simplifies what often gets over-complicated. It’s a great summary of a bunch of great advice on leadership, which is all referenced for anyone who wants to go deeper. Highly recommended read or gift to your employees!

Advice on leadership.

I thought there were some very interesting ideas / concepts in this book, but some of it was lost in the jokey format.

Easy to read, fresh and enlightening. It inspired me to read more about Daniel Goleman.

“An organization cannot command employees to be happy and motivated -it’s something that has to spread naturally throughout the organization.”

“Leadership is not about being in charge but about taking care of those in your charge.”
Simon Sinek

Coaching through the GROW model:
What are your Goals?
What’s the Reality?
What Options do you have?
What’s the Will to move forward?

Another approach:
Kickstart ?: what’s on your mind
AWE ?: And what else
Focus ?: what’s the real challenge here for you
Foundation ?: What do you want
Lazy ?: How can I help
Strategic ?: If you are saying yes to this, what are you saying no to
Learning ?: What was most successful for you

“...we are not human beings that are flawed, or problems waiting to be solved; we are potentially waiting to unfold. Thrusting your positive best self forward is like putting yeast into the organizational dough.”

“...employees who were aware of the positive impact of their contribution had a significantly higher level of meaningfulness.”

“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.”

“...be the leader you wish you had.”

“Taking the principles of relationships, listening, empathy, being present, encouraging - and applying them at home - that’s a game changer.”
