The story is that of a small but ferocious battle, fought near New Market, Virginia, in May 1864. The most celebrated combatants were young confederate troops who were cadets at VMI, the Virginia Military Institute, in Lexington. Force-marched eighty miles from Lexington to New Market, 257 cadets took part in the battle. Ten were killed in action or died as a result of their wounds. Fifty-seven were wounded but survived. It is not surprising that the battle became, and remains, an event of great significance in the institutional memory of VMI, nor that it continues to serve as a major source of cultural identity for residents of New Market.
