EDIT: When I first wrote this review I tried to be respectful, but I just got Skye's newsletter and I'm kind of annoyed. She called this a "bundle", which I suppose is a step in the right direction but still failed to disclose this is book 1 and 2 of a trilogy. Before making any purchase, even if it's free, I like to know what I'm getting into. Meaning whether or not the books belong to a continuing series, trilogy, duet, or is a standalone.

Skye is a savvy business person and should be capable of this.

...I expect honest and transparent marketing from her.

Anyhow, here's the main problem and reason I'm rating this 1 star for false advertising.

In the blurb on Amazon and Goodreads it says of this book:

Author’s Note: THE PAWN AND THE KNIGHT is an exclusive duet including two USA Today bestsellers in the scorching hot Endgame series.

THE PAWN AND THE KNIGHT are not a duet. They are book 1 and 2 of a trilogy. In fact, Skye even has a trilogy boxset: https://www.amazon.com/Endgame-Trilog...

Maybe Skye has a different definition of "duet" than most readers. When authors release duets, my understanding is that means there are 2 books in the series. Book 2 with an ending. When I buy a duet I expect book 2 to have an ending, and not end on a cliffhanger.

Beyond the false advertising, I enjoyed The Pawn and rated it 4 stars. I dnf The Knight, the repetitive angst the couple went through in their relationship became boring. However, this is a good deal (it's currently free) and if you want to buy the third book the trilogy will end up costing you only $5 instead of $10.

Previously released separately The Pawn and The Knight are the first two books in an incredible trilogy by Skye Warren.  This salacious duet will leave you panting for the third book The Castle which is already available.  Break out your game pieces and get ready to play a dangerous game of sex and betrayal in this thought-provoking duo.  Checkmate on the swoon worthy scenes and let the Knight protect the Queen in this drama filled page turner.  No stalemates will be found in the 5-stars for The Pawn and The Knight.

Avery James’ father has given her everything that high society requires to be accepted.  Till the one day that he is found guilty of fraud and they lose it all.  Now desperate to keep their house and pay her father’s medical bills Avery will do anything to get the money that is needed, including selling her virginity to the highest bidder.  Gabriel Miller is the man that turned in Avery’s father to the authorities and he is the man that is going to own Avery mind body and soul.  Avery knows that she is just a Pawn in the financial game of the upper crust of Tanglewood and she also knows that Gabriel is no Knight.  Hidden under all the games are dark secrets that started all of Avery’s family’s downfall and she is determined to find all the secrets no matter how dark they are.

The Pawn
Skye Warren was a new author for me - I am so glad I found her. Beautiful naive Avery is left destitute when her father is ruined after some shady business dealings. She makes a deal with the devil - Gabriel. Or is he? Plenty of plot twists, smoking hot chemistry and an ending that leaves you desperate for book 2. Highly recommend this book.

The Knight
In my opinion book two in this series is even better than book one
Plenty of plot twists and reveals from Avery's family history had me intrigued. The relationship and chemistry between Gabriel and Avery deepens in this book and the sex scenes are even hotter. Can't wait to read book 3

THE PAWN AND THE KNIGHT by Skye Warren are the two books that tell the story of Avery James and
Gabriel Miller. Avery was left with nothing by herself when she found out what was kept from her after graduation. The only barging chip she has is herself which she goes forward to offer it to the notorious Gabriel Miller. Avery was sweet and innocent where Gabriel was the total male character that is bad and tries to fight the softness that Avery brought out in him. In these two books we see their relationship grow from something made out of a bargain into something so much more that neither could ever image. I am such a fan of Ms. Warren's writing she takes you into her stories and you just want more...looking forward to the next book.

THE PAWN AND THE KNIGHT by Skye Warren are 2 books together that tell the angsty and steamy love story of Avery James and Gabriel Miller.
Their journey was full of many twists and turns, drama, angst, heartache, passion, power, mystery, heat , sizzle and romance. Avery was innocent while Gabriel was total bad...can these two even the other out? What is Gabriel's plan for Avery and can Avery temper the bad out of Gabe? The feels and steam is off the charts in this read. Ms. Warren has another hit on her hands and I can't wait for her next book/new series to come out.

The Pawn and The Knight by Skye Warren
The Pawn
I was on the edge of my seat for the entire story, I expected nothing less!!!! The blurb for the book explains the circumstances, but what it doesn't tell you is that you will feel every raw, stark and wild thought and experience Avery has. And you will, you will be on the edge of your seat, your heart will be pounding and brain will implode with every action, reaction and event that occurs.

This book is from Avery's perspective, so you never quite get what is going on behind the scenes with Gabriel, but that won't make you love or hate him more. You will regularly have both those thoughts with him, though you will marvel at his dirty ways, sensitivity and cunning at manipulating the situations to his liking

The Knight
I think I had a good abs workout reading this book, my stomach was clenched the whole time!! This isn't dark like The Pawn, but it is full of suspense and wondering, what next, why that, and, wow, that was not what I thought, now what about..... you get the picture.

To say it wasn't as dark doesn't mean there aren't some deep and emotional moments with Gabriel and Avery. It still is more charcoal than black, and definitely not pure lily white, but then again, there relationship will never be that.

With so much going on around them, and because of them, and to them, this is how they forge together in that fire, and are stronger because of it. We get more of their stories, some they didn't know they had, and some that were inevitable.

So, this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but the story does continue. Those of us who crave and HEA, we get a version of it here, but the fight, the battle, is still not done. I'll be along for the more, because these characters need to have some semblance of peace in their lives, and I'll follow them until they do!

The Pawn was Hot, intriguing, with a lot of twists and turns that you won't see them coming.. This is the beginning of the story of Gabriel and Avery. a story full of lies and hidden agendas that are keeping them apart. it seems like everything and everyone is against them including Gabriel with his back motives and past..

Avery is beautiful and has everything she needs except for the love and the attention of the person that she loves the most. she has been living in a lie, her father keeps her nearby under false circumstances until things get out of control and Avery will have to decide if she will put herself in the worst kinds of situations to save her father and the most precious memories she had her mother house..

Gabriel is strong, ruthless and controlling.. he has so much power people often are scared of him, whatever he says is what needs to happen. Gabriel has some debts to collect and he won't stop at anything until he gets what he wants, no matter if that means owning and buying a beautiful lady to make his adversary to pay.

The Pawn is the beginning of the Endgames, in this first book we get to discover and learn more about each character and story behind, they have so many things to solve, so many secrets keeping them from finding out what really happened..

-----

The Knights is the continuation of the Endgame series, it gets more intriguing and twisted than before. The knight was when the most important part of the story happened, not only we get to finally understand many things about Gabriel and Avery's family but also about the past that keeps hunting them and not letting them move forward..

The Knight was everything I expected, it had the angst, the lies, the twist and the whole mess that we were waiting for to finally see what was troubling these two in their lives and past.. we also get to meet a lot of secondary characters that will bring more clues and questions about what is happening around Avery and Gabriel.

The Knight really kept me on the edge at all times, not really knowing where the story was taking us, making us doubt and suspect about everybody but making the story even more enjoyable and even twisted..

looking forward to the final book of this series "The Castle"

Love , love, love!

I downloaded The Pawn for free not realizing it was book #1 of a trilogy. Tend yo avoid series for two reasons. 1. Hate waiting for subsequent books to come out and 2. The next books ate usually more expensive, as was the case with this trilogy. When I looked for the e-books #2 and 3, they were $4.99 each. Then i got lucky and found this boxed set if #1 (The Pawn) and #2 (The knight) for only $.99 so I only paid $5.98 for all three.

The first book, The Pawn, was so good, I couldn't put it down and there was no way i could Not read the others, I had to find out what happened next.

The second book, The Knight, was even better ... more intrigue, more mystery yet providing some reveals from the first. The characters are multidimensional and intriguing, not just the two main characters, the h and H, but secondary characters as well.

This is definitely a can't put down story and I can't wait to read the next!

A bit weird.

It was all a bit weird to me with the chess references and the sinister undertones and machinations that are never fully explained.

This book has both Book #1 - The Pawn, and Book #2 - The Knight.

In The Pawn, we have Avery James, who has been raised in upper crust society, she doesn’t know want or need. That all changes though after her 18th birthday. Her father has a fall from grace. Over night they seem to lose everything. Avery is now the care taker to her father who was beaten so badly the medical doctors aren’t sure if he will survive a year or two or just months. Avery has sold all the furnishings in the house to help pay bills and to feed her and her father. However, it never seems like there is enough money to go around. Avery has become quite lean on her already small frame.

Avery goes to a gentleman’s club that she knew her father was a member of. She knows she needs money and the only way to do it is by going to those who her father hung around before. Avery still has something that may help fetch a high price but she isn’t sure about it.

Gabriel Miller seems to be the Devil himself. Gabriel is the one at the gentlemen’s club who suggests the auction. Avery is taken back by his sheer size. She’s never met this man before and yet he is already trying to push his way into her life.

Avery and Gabriel do a dance of sorts. Him pushing her pulling, mainly in opposite directions. Avery wants to trust him but at the same time she can’t.

In The Knight, we have Avery and Gabriel doing the same dance. Gabriel told Avery to leave and she did. She’s at one of the shadiest hotels in town. That’s all she can afford. Avery rides on the bus daily and goes to visit her father in the hospital. For a girl who has nothing she seems to have common sense and knows how to do a few things. She’s trying to stretch out what little money she has, she barely eating and sharing the little food she does get with a homeless man named Will.

Avery finds out a few things about Gabriel. She knows he is responsible for her father’s business going belly up. He is the reason why she is now living in a horrible hotel. Harper one of Avery’s friends tries to comfort her and help her by being a true friend. Harper’s step brother isn’t pleased that she is with Avery. We have more plot twists and turns in book #2. Will Avery be able to be with Gabriel after everything she’s learned?

I did receive a free ARC copy of this book. I am freely leaving an honest review.

YES PLEASE

I blew through the duet that follows this trilogy, and couldn't move on to The Pawn fast enough. I ve reviewed them separately, and after reading each book, for a more targeted review:
-The Pawn-
Aaagh- so good! After finishing the duet that comes after this trilogy I couldn't wait to come back and dive into The Pawn.
Avery's seemingly neverending loss is heartbreaking. This poor girl just CAN'T catch a break. Jesus.
In her desperation, and with altruistic motives, she swallows her pride to try and save her father the only way she thinks she can. At every turn, everywhere she looks, men are looking to take advantage of her. Use her. Hurt her. She is afraid to share her troubles with the one friend she has left after her fall from grace, and so ends up feeling exceedingly alone.
I won't get into it any further than that in the interest of avoiding spoilers, but suffice to say I loved it!
Recommended!
-The Knight-
Amazing. I love these characters. I love the world of Tanglewood. I love the suspense. I love the push and pull. The festering secrets. The sexy times. The intrigue. Avery's strength.
I am pretty confident this series is going to be a re-read for me in the future. I don't have too many of those, so that is saying something.
This book starts out right where book one left off, and that's all I will say about that to avoid spoilers. Throughout the story Avery toggles back and forth on her feelings for, well... everyone. And rightly so. She's been lied to. Cheated. Betrayed. Abandoned. And is coming to the determination at a depressingly young age that she can only count on herself.
I am so excited that there is another book to this series. A good series allows for a story to be oh so much richer than a standalone- more history, more backstory. More character development.
I'd only read a couple of books by this author prior to this trilogy (and its associated duet), but I expect I'll be reading a LOT more of her catalogue going forward.

THE PAWN:
I LOVE The Pawn & The Knight by Skye Warren. The Pawn left me speechless the first time finished reading it. I loved it the second time around. Avery James lost everything. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and within a year of graduating high school, her world came crashing down around her. She learns that what she thought was here life was a lie. Desperate and alone, Avery is brought to the doorstep of the most notorious criminal in town. She must sell the only asset that she has left in order to save her family. However, she gets more than she bargained for in the very dangerous and mysterious Gabriel Miller. Avery thinks she is successful in her arrangement until she learns some very terrible truths about her family and everything comes crashing down around her.

The Pawn wove a very tangled web of deceit, mystery, and strategy.

THE KNIGHT:
After reading The Pawn the first time, I was excited to read The Knight. I loved it this time around too. Avery is reeling and trying to survive after being kicked to the curb by Gabriel. Add to the fact that her father is in a rehab facility trying to recover from a heart attack. Avery doesn't know which way is up. The poor girl is living in a seedy hotel for goodness sake.

Gabriel, ever the mysterious enigma, makes his appearance back in Avery's life. We learn a bit more about Gabriel and find out some interesting things of why he is the way he is. Despite acting one way, his true colors come out.

This book was so dramatic, mysterious, and sexy. I never imagined the ending. A new player pops up that throws the whole thing off kilter. Actually we met a few new characters in this book who I hope to see more of in the next. I loved every minute of The Knight.

The Pawn-
4.5 stars

Too many pieces in this puzzle
The photo is missing
The straight edges are all missing

Avery is struggling to put her life back together. It's like sand slipping through her fingers. One bold and repugnant choice seems to be her only hope. But is Avery truly making this choice? Is she going to be the master of her destiny?

What a tangled web, Skye Warren weaves. Not a big chess player myself, I was surprised by the twists that also caught Avery in the web. It was a compelling read. I couldn't put it down and now...
I have to wait. Ugh, my impatience is going to kill me. Maybe not kill me, but definitely leave me on life support huddle up in an empty room of my house...

reviewed for the Sweet Spot Sisterhood

The Knight-
5 stars

She knows she was a pawn. But she doesn't know whose or why.

The right information at the wrong time...

Feeling like the pieces of the puzzle are sand slipping through her fingers. Learning that not only was she caught in the spiders web, but she is already in a cocoon.

When you think you know the game and it's just the players changing...It must be a total shock to learn you are playing the wrong game.

Cryptic...yes
Edgy...maybe
Dark...hmmmm
Left wanting...absolutely

Avery thought she had her big girl panties on. She thought she was finally in control. She thought she was done...naive

But now Avery isn't quite as shiny and new, she isn't quite as naive, and she isn't nearly as innocent as she used to be. Distrust, anger, and despair still rock her but this little virgin won't lay down and take it anymore.

This my second Skye Warren ARC... When I signed up for this I thought this was something new from the author but its actually a trilogy called the Endgame Series that's just being released as a boxed set... and as it turns out, I already have this series in my library for some time now... Aaaah, the bookworm life.

I can't go quite into details because I don't want to give anything away...

Gabriel Miller is a ruthless businessman and one of the most feared residents of Tanglewood... Avery James was Tanglewood royalty. She was the local princess who fell from grace... Life took turn for the worst and she found herself auctioning her virginity to the highest bidder in an exclusive gentlemen's club called the Den. Of course, Gabriel Miller wins the bid, and she would be at his mercy for one whole month.

I've read all three books in the series... There's just something about the whole innocent girl and broken, reluctant villain falling in love with each other amidst all the crazies... plus mix it up with over-the-top conspiracy theories and shady characters and you got yourself hooked like a junkie... like you're indulging yourself in some kind of a guilty pleasure.

Dark romances aren't really my kind of thing but I indulge myself from time to time because there's just something about it that draws me in. I've read others that are darker, bordering on sick—I'm a dreamer and a romantic sap, so I tend to avoid those...

This series—the Endgame series, will definitely keep you on your toes. If you're into psychological, dark romance... then this is the book to pick up next.

I don’t even know where to start with this pair of books. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The base premise has been done before (auctioning virginity for money save the family home), but this story is so much more than that. Gabriel Miller is the type of character I love to find in a book. He is enigmatic, dangerous, and sensual. Avery is naïve but smart, which automatically makes her better than many other heroines in this type of novel. I particularly liked the references to mythology throughout the two books. The influence of chess in the story was fascinating to me. Not only does Avery realize that everything that happens to her is like a chess game, but the secrets and lies that are unraveled also move the larger story like a chess game. My only disappointment was that it was only two books of a trilogy, and I was left hanging (of course, I went and got the third so I can see how it all ends). This review was written based on a complimentary pre-release copy.

The Pawn WOW!!The writing is absolutely flawless, it will keep you reading until the end craving what comes next .Gabriel is a very secretive puzzle to figure out but everything you want and need .Avery is a very desperate woman at the moment and will do anything she has to to survive not knowing the whole truth .
The Knight The second book in the Endgame series answers some questions but not all but still keeps you on your toes with what is going to happen next,it will pray on your last nerve.
Gabriel Miller could be Avery's hero as she tries to unlock the truth about her family breaking down his walls just a little for him to only build them up again in his alpha/contolling ways.Maybe he does have a heart as he hads over control for Avery and bows before her and looses just a little of himself for that moment .Now the war begins as they will fight together I am hoping but who can say what will happen. This series deserves a million stars ,Skye is one brillant Author!!

This is actually the first 2 books of a 3 part series. The hook is that the first 2 parts are free on Kindle, but if you want to find out how it all ends, you have to pay for it. Totally unfair, I know. But you can either support the author, or just guess that the story will end with a HEA and just be happy with that. But anyway. The story is that the pawn is a young woman who grew up with her father and he was a very wealthy businessman. Mom had passed away when she was young, so the daughter got all the attention. Well, turns out that Daddy dearest wasn't the most legal man and everything blew up in his face. He ended up indicted for his practices and his daughter had to face the consequences. After she had to sell everything she had and it still wasn't enough, she had to auction off the only thing that was left, herself. Enter the Knight. But is he her savior or just out for blood? You have to read to find out.

Books 1 & 2 of a trilogy

This is books 1 & 2 of a 3 book series. Kind of misleading when I downloaded it but not a bad read. It was alright. Avery is a naive woman who needs money to help her sick father so she agrees to be auctioned off. Gabriel is the rich alpha who buys her. For thirty days. There are some serious twists and turns thru out these 2 books. He buys her as revenge against her dad, who did shady business deals, 1 of them with Gabriel. Gabriel is pretty much an arrogant ass to her most of the time but supposedly thats his way for loving her. There is questions about her mother's death, father's involvement, friends intentions, etc. Some are answered in these 2 but rest are hopefully resolved in the third book. Wish I knew it was trilogy before got it now need to decide if want third book.

I read The Pawn and The Knight when they were released individually and this Endgame series is by far one of my very favorites from Skye Warren. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Hard hearted Gabriel Miller is owed a debt and he intends to collect, but as you can well imagine, nothing ever goes as planned. Avery is a resilient survivor and the king will kneel before his queen.

I love that the author stayed true to the characters personality and didn't change them in the name of love. Was Gabriel a little less jagged by the end, yes...but he was still ruthless and commanding...I love how his presence just oozed from the pages of this story. Gabriel Miller is the one BBF by which all others are measured.

This author is generally fantastic and this set is no exception. This is probably the third time I have read it. Avery has been sold then sells herself to pay her father’s debt but there is definitely something very evil in Tanglewood. Can Gabriel protect her from this evil or is he actually part of the problem? Other indie author think that they write erotica but actually many of them fail miserably and reading it feels like trashy porn. It degrades all women which is why I call it porn. Not Skye Warren because her sex scenes include all the emotions that are so lacking in other authors’ work. I highly recommend her writing for anyone that wants to read good modern romance with sex scenes that are believable.

These two books make for a stunning combination, bringing the reader compulsive and intense reading. Skye Warren writes with such style and confidence, bringing her plot development and her characters to vivid life, that my focus becomes unwavering. The mythological references, the chess games, the intricate plotting augmented by excellent writing, the intrigue and betraryals, and the intensity of the relationship between Avery and Gabriel, the heat between them, building and building, make this a pair of books which will send you running for The Castle to get to rest of the pieces.
5 star. Excellent reading.

*****5 Amazing Stars*****
Skye Warren writes with such style that brings her plot development and her characters to vivid life. I could not stop reading as soon as I got my hands on this book. Gabriel is enigmatic, dangerous, and sensual. Avery smart but very naïve when it comes to her father. Avery doesn’t know all the secrets and lies that have been feed to her but when she learns them it turns her world upside down. When Avery gets one or two questions are answered, five new questions come to light and you realize she is even more in the dark than ever. Such a good read!

The Pawn & The Knight by Skye Warren

I absolutely loved this book it has everything in it murder, mystery ,deceit, men to died for ,billionaires, sex , greed and discrimination against women and the less fortunate. This book kept me up at night trying to figure out who the villain was. Avery worked my nerves and yet she was so clueless. She was loyal to a father who was a greedy arse. She was manipulated by a upper class disrespectful boyfriend but the gorgeous ,mysterious Gabriel Miller was her black knight. His book was well written and is definitely written for mature reader's.

A ruthless billionaire determined to get revenge. A woman with more to lose than her virginity. And a sensual game that will break them both. Gabriel Miller has thirty days to do anything he wants with her body. He can enjoy every inch of her, but he can never let himself fall for her. No matter how sweetly she surrenders.

The Pawn and The Knight was a fabulous read and kept my attention throughout. I couldn't put it down which led to a late night but a very enjoyable read from start to finish. This is the first book I've read by Skye Warren and if this is anything to go by I will definitely read more of her books in the future.

OMG!! So freaking good!!! I loved everything about Avery and Gabriel's story. Their story kept me on the edge of my seat with wanting answers to all of Avery's questions. There is so much suspense and hotness that kept those pages turning. I absolutely couldn't get enough of their story and these two books combined into one doesn't end in this book. I am so excited that there is more to their story and I can't wait to get my hands on The Castle.

I highly recommend that you read this book.

Happy Reading Everyone!!!

Again?

It's bad enough when an author ends a book in the middle and we have to purchase the next one to get the ending. But when it's split in three parts, that's just outrageous! I'm totally fed up with authors who care more about their bottom line than their readers. Am I the only one who is bothered by this practice? I really wish there was a way to know before getting a book if it's complete or not. If anyone's has any ideas on how this can be done, please let me know. I do not recommend either this book or the author.
