"She wasn't quite sure how she was going to handle what was about to become an international incident, but Adelaide was certain of one thing: she was about to find out."
Returning to the Darkwater Inn after a restorative sabbatical in England, Adelaide Fountaine's role as general manager is once again interrupted by tragedy; a robbery gone wrong, with no survivors. Apparently, after hacking into the inn's security system, someone had successfully pilfered a priceless tiara from the hotel safe. There are more questions than answers, and while the two men in Adelaide's life are both determined to help her find them, her mixed feelings about how each of them can fit into her future, is still as confusing as ever.
Dark intentions swirl through-out this intriguing second novel, in Robin Caroll's must-read Darkwater Inn series.
'You'd be amazed at what the right bit of motivation can do to move people to do things you'd never think they would.'
Robin Caroll outdoes her previous book in her Darkwater Inn series with this one. She is in top form here. Adelaide Fountaine, general manager of the Darkwater Inn, has just returned from a six month time away when she is informed that the security of the inn has been hacked, two murders have been committed and a priceless royal tiara has been stolen. What? The princess to whom the tiara belongs is staying at the inn to ride in a parade but how can she without this tiara? And how did all this happen, anyway? Was more stolen than the tiara and cash? As sometimes is the case, things are not exactly what they appear in the Darkwater Inn.
Detective Beau Savoie, who has long held a torch for Addy, is called in to investigate, and is having a hard time dealing with the fact that the owner's son, Dimitri, who is a chef at the inn, also cares for Addy. But first, these murders, the hack and the heist must be solved.
Caroll ramps it up in this second book in the series, adding more layers every few chapters, till the reader is clueless. I had no idea the culprit. Then, there is more to solve when Addy is kidnapped! How does Caroll do it? How does she create such intense drama with such intrigue? I was all in from the very start and I can't wait till the last book in the series. I think all Caroll's readers want to know which man Addy will choose, too. I know I do! Team Beau all the way here! Bravo to Robin Caroll for a job well done. Highly recommended.
*My thanks to the author and publisher for a preview copy of this book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
Adelaide Fountaine just wants to run the Darkwater Inn efficiently and without trouble after returning from a six-month sabbatical, but when a jewel heist and murder lands on her doorstep, she’s once again thrust into danger. A priceless tiara has gone missing and three people are left dead. Who’s next on the murderer’s list? She not only has to deal with the busy Mardi Gras season and this dangerous puzzle but with a visiting princess and the attention of two men: Beau and Dimitri. How can she choose between the two when they both have captured her heart?
The mystery heightens when Adelaide is abducted. Can these two men set aside their differences and work together to save the woman they both care for before it’s too late?
Author Robin Caroll has done it again in book two from the Darkwater Inn series – Darkwater Lies. It’s a clever tale that captured my attention from page one. With twists and turns around every corner, I had to keep reading to unravel the mystery. I like a story where you don’t know who is behind it and this one doesn’t disappoint.
I once again fell in love with the characters—Addy, Beau, and Dimitri. They’re solid and come alive on the page. However, I found myself rooting for Team Beau, but we’ll have to wait for Darkwater Truth before we find out who she chooses!
It’s apparent the author has done her homework with the research of New Orleans, Mardi Gras, voodoo, and the royalty of Liechtenstein. This brings the novel to life and the reader can picture exactly what the character sees. Awesome writing!
I really enjoy this series and look forward to the final installment.
I give Darkwater Lies four Mardi Gras beads. The mystery takes you to the heart of New Orleans and grabs you by the throat!
**An e-copy of this book was provided by the author for my honest opinion.
I love this series for many reasons, and this second story in it did not disappoint! I love the way Robin builds mysteries within mysteries. It’s never just one mystery; there are always extra mysteries that pop up along way that add depth to her stories. It’s one of the things that draws me to her books. I love that it's set in New Orleans and hits just the right notes to capture the esssence of the city. I am Team Beau all the way, and I can’t wait for the next one!
I was gifted my ARC and it is my pleasure to have been able to read and review the second in this series.
Adelaide Fontaine has returned to her job at the Darkwater Inn after 6 months in Europe learning more about hotel management from the best. While there she used the time to try and figure out which man she will give her heart too. Beauregard Savoie, whom she has been best friends with since childhood and whom her father took under his wing when his parents were killed when he was younger. She has such a strong love for him but is not sure if she wants to change the relationship. Dimitri Pampalon is the son of the Darkwater Inn's owner. They have become very close friends as well and she does really care about him, but as with Beau she is not sure she wants to change the relationship. She has not really allowed herself to think of either man as more than a great friend. So....both men have been patiently waiting for her to figure it and both have given her the space she needs. Not long after she is back, the hotel's computer system is hacked. Room service orders showing up that guests did not order and key cards for the rooms stop working and other things. Adelaide wants to know why she was not immediately notified and Dimitri explains that his sister Lissette (his dads daughter from an affair) came to him about it and they were hoping to figure it out. Dimitri has Lissette learning the business because he feels it is only fair that she be part of the business as he is. Adelaide inquired as to whom was stationed at the vault and if anything unusual had been reported. Sully who has been the acting head of security since last year, said Leon was stationed but he had not spoken with him so they sent someone to check with him when they could not reach him by phone. Adelaide went with Sully to check on Leon and had a sense of deja vu' when the vault appeared to be open and Sully told her to hang back while he checked. Leon and the bodyguard of the visiting Princess of Lichtenstein were both dead and the contents of the vault had been stolen. $50,000.00 of Mr. Pamaplon Senior (owner of the inn) and the Princess's crown. Adelaide's feeling of deja vu' was now a reality and she is worried that it could spell the beginning of the end for her job. She must settle both her professional & personal situation. Thank you Ms. Carroll for allowing me to be able to participate. I look forward to the third book. Does it have to be the last?? I love the characters.
Adelaide had taken a Sabbatical to Europe for six months. Now she is told they have a hacker in there system. It is Mardi Gras time, and it showing only half of the rooms occupied, instead of almost all. Hesitating to call the police, because of incident a year ago of a murdered body found here. When told the guest were locked out of there rooms. Then finding two bodies and the vault was open, she had no choice now. She had to look into the vault, before police came, the one priceless item was gone. The mystery, the intrigue, the history of the tiara, the characters we love all in this story. We try to figure out what happened, as well as the love of Adelaide, readers will love the story. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
This author can sure write a good who done it! This book has mystery, suspense and romance. I cant wait to see who Addy picks romantically. I'm on team Beau. But then how would she keep working at the Inn with Dimitri there all of the time cooking? That would be awkward. Wouldn't it? Maybe she should pick Dimitri with all that good food all of the time. It's so hard. So, hurry up Ms. Caroll and get that third book out. I'm on pins and needles here. *I was given a copy by the author. This is my honest opinion.
Second in the Darkwater Inn series, this thrilling suspense novel is fabulous! It is fast-paced and intriguing, set during the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We get to better know the characters we came to love – or not – in Darkwater Secrets with a plot that hits the ground running.
Addy is General Manager of Darkwater Inn, a luxury, historic hotel in the French Quarter. It is owned by Claude Pampalon, who groomed his son Dimitri to be the CEO, a position he doesn’t want. Instead, Dimitri is the chef at the Inn’s renowned restaurant. His half sister Lissette, daughter of a woman Claude had secretly seen, has been confirmed as Claude’s daughter. Dimitri helped Lissette get on board to learn to be CEO of the Inn and, due to the inheritance laws unique to their state, will share Claude’s estate with Dimitri they thought.
Approximately an hour after discovered, Addy learns of a hack into the computer systems. She hurries to see if the vault has been compromised when the security team is unable to get a response from the guard posted there. She and Dimitri find the vault open, and dead inside is one of the Inn’s guards and a guard of Liechtenstein’s Princess Katerina. The safe at the back of the vault has also been opened, and is now missing $50,000 cash, a black velvet tubular pouch Claude had secured there a couple days ago, and the jewel-encrusted tiara the Princess brought with her. Thus begins the investigation into a labyrinth of theft of incredibly valuable items, murders, and even more difficult for Dimitri and Beau, one of the detectives, Addy’s kidnapping. It is a tangled web of intrigue, in which one clue might lead to another crime, or an unexpected bad guy or gal.
I enjoyed getting to know Addy, Dimitri, and Beau better! I also appreciated “meeting” the princess and learning about her Liechtenstein home. Addy has an inner strength and an engaging manner of drawing people into conversations. She has been away from the Lord for a very long time, trying to overcome the anger and resentment that long had a grip on her. The potential romance she put on hold almost a year ago still awaits her attention. Beau, who she has known since childhood, has loved her for most of her life. Dimitri hasn’t known her as long, but he also is in love with her. They are each aware of the other’s feelings and awaiting her decision of who she will go out with. Since I like both, it is hard to guess which one she might choose! Addy had been in Europe for several months of special training, and had taken a long assessment of the direction she is going in. Dimitri is a man of faith, and he prays for all concerned with the circumstances. In that respect I think he would be a good choice.
There are exciting plot twists throughout that continually change the landscape of the story. It is a challenge to determine who was behind each – or all – of the crimes, and there were definite surprises. This is a highly-satisfying novel that reminds me all over again how much I love this author’s work. I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates excellent Christian intrigue with the potential for romance in a fascinating, historical setting.
From a grateful heart: I received a complimentary copy of the e-Arc, and this is my honest review.
Outstanding whodunit by Robin Caroll! Darkwater Lies is another well-written, edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting southern novel of suspense. It is another fine example of Caroll’s award winning storyteller skills.
It is Mardi Gras in New Orleans and things are hopping at the Darkwater Inn. Freshly returned from a trip to Europe, the well-rested general manager, Adelaide Fontaine, is ready to welcome guests to the Inn, including royalty. When a priceless tiara goes missing and three people turn up dead, Detective Beau Savoie is assigned to the case. Detective Savoie soon determines that the robbery and murders are inside jobs, everyone is a suspect.
Everyone includes the son of the owner, Dimitri, Adelaide finds herself caught in between both men as each vies for her heart while attempting to find the real thief and murdered. Even Dimitri’s father becomes suspect!
As the sleuths become closer to finding the culprit, Adelaide is kidnapped. Detective Savoie and Dimitri now must work together to find Adelaide and the perpetrator of the crimes.
Fast-paced and well-written, the author’s growing up years in Louisiana lend a southern, New Orleans true feel to the novel. Coupled with rich descriptions of historical New Orleans and intriguing players, Darkwater Lies is one of Robin Caroll’s best yet.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via the publisher and am not required to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions therein are solely my own.
It’s like being in the movie Double Jeopardy wrapped up in the soulfulness of Lauren Daigle’s latest album. Seriously...Carroll transported me right to the heart of New Orleans and Mardi Gras season. She had a poetic way of drawing you right into the rich culture of New Orleans. The superstition, voodooism and Christianity struggles in a town rich with history. The foods sound so delicious your mouth will be watering! The romance is sublime. The characters are real. It’s a great follow up to Darkwater Secrets...
In Darkwater Lies, a foreign princess, murder, stolen tiara, and romance draw the reader in with an intense plot twist. There is also a story around the tiara that dates to a certain Russian family. Loved it and highly recommend it to mystery lovers. The romance between Adelaide and her two suitors increases... however will she choose! Then she disappears and it’s a race against time to save her as she works to save herself. The faith element grows throughout the series as we see her drawing closer to her true Savior. Highly recommended for mystery, suspense, and romance fans. I cannot wait for the third book! The ending is sublime!
I really enjoyed the second book in this series, but it reads perfectly fine as a standalone book. Every time I thought I knew what was coming next, I was wrong! That made it fun and intriguing to read, and I could hardly put it down! The characters were vivid, the mystery much more complex than I imagined, and the whole story flowed really well. My favorite part was that the main character, Addy, has TWO men interested in her. Typically books have one main male and one main female, and we know (yawn) that they will get together in the end, no matter what they go through in between. However, each of these two guys is wonderful in his own way, and I honestly have no idea which one she will pick (or even if she will pick one!). I certainly can’t decide between them. That’s another delightful twist in this series. I can’t wait for book three!
Tbiere are many layers in the second book of the series. Addy has been in Europe for six months of more training since the first book. Now they have a princess visiting from a small country who is willing to ride on a float in the parade wearing her tiara. Then the unthinkable happens! The hotel 's security system is hacked and worse, the hotel vault is robbed. There are many twists and turns which kept me rivited to the story. Addy is still confused about which man she loves as both adore her. Finally Addy realizes her first love belongs to Jesus who she neglected for years, but desperately needs in her life. I am excited to read the final book in the series. Incredible read!!!
I loved this second book in the Darkwater Inn series. I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this and the first book. Intriguing mystery kept me trying to guess who was behind everything. I will definitely be reading the next one especially to see who Addy chooses.
I've read book one and two in this series and cannot wait until I receive the third and final in the Darkwater Inn series. It will be released on May 31. I can't wait to see which of her two suitors the main character chooses. Me? I'm hoping she picks Beau. Anyway, I highly recommend this Christian Romantic Suspense. Love the New Orleans history revealed during the story.
Even better than the first book! Really enjoying the series, with its authentic flavor and attention to detail. Memorable characters, an easy to follow but hard to figure out mystery, and a love triangle written so well I can't complain -- even though I don't like love triangles -- all combine for an excellent story.
If course, I'd expect nothing less from favorite author Robin Caroll!
Robin Caroll is one of the best for writing mystery and suspense! A princess, stolen tiara, murders, kidnapping, Mardi Gras parades, voodoo, and romance all rolled into one book! There is action, suspense, and then there is the romance. Will Adelaide Fountaine choose Beau, the police detective, or Dimitri, the hotel chef? Looking forward to reading Book 3!
Like everting about the book. Held my attention thru the whole book. Had no idea it would be Colton at the end. Love all her books. Fantastic writer. Waiting for her next book.
I liked the book, but not as much as the first in the series. I think because I figured out the kidnapper and the person behind the thief of the crown ahead of the revel. That said, I would still recommend the book. It was great to go back to the Darkwster Inn.
I loved being back in New Orleans at the Darkwater Inn. Suspense grabbed at you with the suspense, twists and turns. I loved the storyline ,the multifaceted characters and the locale. This book is recommended for those who love cozy mysteries.
I enjoyed getting back to New Orleans and the Darkwater Inn and getting to catch up of some characters and get involved in new troubles and mysteries that surround the legendary city and the old, lively inn. A great addition to this series.
An excellent sequel to Darkwater Secrets. Intriguing setting in New Orleans, unique characters who all have more than one side, and the continuing love triangle. Who will Adelaide choose, Beau or Dimitri? I hope to find out in the final book of the series, Darkwater Truth.
I liked this one better than the first. Lots of surprises with the mystery and it was fun to have Lichtenstein and the Romonovs slightly involved! That’s not a commonly known country.
The end of this third book in the series was SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT!! It ended SO ABRUPTLY! I was like, "this is it?" After all the back and forth with the two 'boyfriends' - in all three books? This is what I waited for with the relationship? Big letdown. I have found that, though Robin Caroll writes a good story, her endings are rushed and abrupt. Hence, the reason for only 2 stars.
Another excellent mystery - with many characters to follow - a romance, she seems to be in love with 2 men - family drama - well written where you know all the characters - the only downside is I have to wait until she writes #3 to see which man "wins" out !!!!
