Survivalist Reality Show #1

Surviving the Swamp

Rate this book
Skin of Your Teeth Survival is a reality show made famous for pairing part-time survivalists with a real-life survival situation. Led by world-famous Prepper and Survivalist Wolf Henderson, season ten promises to be different: this time none of the contestants are survivalists—they’ve all been picked to fail.

But when an EMP hits, the cast scatters and Wolf is left to guide a group of mis-fits in a suddenly dark and dangerous world. Wolf knows this group will be some of the first casualties if he doesn't help so he offers them safety at his island bug-out location and takes off with his ragtag team to move through the wild and unpredictable swampland of Florida.

The loner of the group, Regan, only joined the reality show to escape her past life. She knows she can’t survive on her own, but connecting with others has never been her strong point. She believes she has a better shot in one of the major cities on the coast than in the swamp, so she joins the team with every intent of striking out on her own once the opportunity arises. But with the world around them growing more dangerous every day, she has to figure out whether she’s better off with the group or alone in the post-EMP world.

And whether Regan or Wolf realize it, the dangerous journey through swampland will soon become a literal fight for survival once they reach the chaos of ‘civilized’ South Florida.

This novel contains scenes with violence and referenced sexual content.

Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

This was an okay read.

It does generally work as post-apoc and it’s nice to read one that’s really just about the human factor (i.e. no zombies, pandemics, aliens, etc.) – and I really hope the series stays that way!

The book has its grim parts, but our characters are mostly enjoyable to read.

Our main character is a little harder to feel for. She’s a mix of prickly (which is okay) and goo-goo eyed over a guy (which kind of isn’t). I really wanted her to just be the tough girl she tries to be and no worry about if he likes her likes her.

I’m not entirely certain that I’m up for the next book. All the main characters ‘feels’ were kind of getting in the way of adventure. We’ll see…

This book has some really slow points but also seemed to go fast at the same time. Regan really bothered me. She was a know-it-all and always seemed to get herself and the rest into trouble. Let's see how the rest of it goes.

I felt it was time to return to my favourite genre of post-apocalyptic and it happened by coincidence an author I have previously read and loved has just started releasing a new series. I decided to learn a little more about her book. When I read the series name and part of the blurb, I will be totally honest and say I was initially put off. How would the reality show elements come across? If all the contestants were picked to fail what was the point of the show? In the end I decided that the only way I would find anything out was to start reading the book. The cover has an overall apocalyptical feel. It has a background that fits the description of the swamp and surrounding area within the book. I would guess that the two figures pictured on the cover are most likely Wolf and Regan.

The book begins with Regan plodding on making slow but sure progress through the swamp to the next rendezvous point with the cast and crew of the reality show. The thing bothering Regan the most is that her feet are wet and that’s bad, very bad. The resident expert on the show, Wolf Henderson had given all the contestants a warning about foot rot, and told them all to carry spare socks with them. Unfortunately for Regan she had managed to lose her spare dry pair. Regan goes over in her head why she had thought it would be a good idea to enter this reality show. Her partner had already ditched her, and she was now all alone. Or as alone as you could be on a TV show. Regan finally comes to a point where there are three choices as to how to get to the rendezvous point. Choice one, the quickest and shortest way there was to wade through a pond area. Choice two was to head even deeper into the swamp and Choice three was a climb. It didn’t look impossible to climb, though it was quite steep. Having a partner would have made it a much easier option. Regan discovers each option has its pros and cons, she needed to just decide and get on with it! Regan manages to become stuck at around half way up, and is wondering about the chances of her injuring herself if she has to jump down. Suddenly Regan hears a voice and looks up to see another contestant, Tabitha Funelli. Tabitha helps Regan up the rest of the way and that’s when they hear an air horn sound. The two women walk into the camp to discover what is going on. Basically, there are no camera crew, in fact there was no crew about at all. Wolf, being the only expert there takes charge of the situation. It seems there has been some sort of “apocalypse” which means that they are basically on their own with no way to communicate with anyone! Wolf and some of the men discuss what could have happened. Some of the other contestants start pushing extra supplies into their own backpacks. Wolf, asks them all to slow down, and says no one should be heading off alone into the swamp, it’s too dangerous and reminds them the supplies are for everyone. One of the contestants called George spins around on Wolf and tells him his “little show is over”. George goes on to rant about not hanging around with Wolf, a Native American who is a wannabe survivalist, who thinks he knows it all. He goes on to say he knows enough and he is going home and the rest of them should be doing the same. Thankfully Wolf takes some deep breaths, he is proud of his very genuine Native American heritage and being an accomplished survivalist. Despite Wolf suggesting they all settle for the night and set out the next day George insists he is going now, and Mary goes with him! It seems everyone else is taking Wolf’s advice and everyone finds a comfy spot within the camp to sleep. The following morning as people awaken, they discover more people have left, but worse than that they have taken the majority of the supplies and anything useful with them!

All those remaining have decided to be in Wolf’s group whilst getting out of the Swamp and then reassess the situation once back in civilisation. The group consists of Wolf, Regan, Geno & Tabitha Funelli, and Fred. Despite the smaller groups impatience to set off Wolf is determined to forage for food, supplies and anything they could possibly need before actually beginning their journey out of the swamp.

My favourite characters within Surviving The Swamp are 27 year old Regan who has wasp allergies, so knows the importance of having a decent amount of epi-pens and other medical supplies on hand. The other main character I grew to like throughout the book was Native American, survival expert Wolf. He is infuriating at times with how slow he does things, and how everything has to be done his way. I can definitely imagine Wolf & Regan slipping into a relationship together, if they ever make it our of danger! I wasn’t overly keen on Lily at time she came across as a rather spoilt young girl who was more worried about her appearance than even her father’s safety. The other character I adored was Tabitha, small in stature but a big heart that she wears on her sleeve for all to see! Tabitha is a paramedic so her skill set is vital to the group. I loved how her persistence with Regan resulted in a great friendship between them both. Tabitha ending up putting her own safety on the line for others more than once, in this first instalment of the Survivalist Reality Show series.

The pace of the book is good and keeps you reading, you certainly don’t want to put it down to do anything else! So quite an addictive read. I enjoyed following the group through the different challenges they came across due to being in the swamp and their journey to Naples, as well as how their different characters had to learn to get along with each other. I also liked the “Dear Diary” aspect of the book where Lily is chronicling what she and her grandfather are doing, and how they manage to get over to the island to await Wolf’s arrival.

To sum up I enjoyed the book, like most of the characters, though I think disliking some of the characters is a good thing too! You don’t like everyone you meet in real life so why would a book be any different! I am looking forward to reading more of the series and perhaps improving my opinion of Wolf’s daughter Lily as time goes on.

Surviving the Swamp is a story about a group of people from a reality TV show who get stranded in a swamp after an EMP hits, leaving them with no contact with the outside world, and very few supplies.

I’m sorry, but hated Regan. She’s not a strong independent loner, she’s just a smart-mouthed, know-it-all, moron. I found myself hoping she would get less shrew-like and idiotic as the story unfolded, that she would be humbled by the experience…..I’ll let you find out for yourself if she does, I don’t want to spoil it. No one else was all that likeable either. I know they were supposed to be “real” people, but seriously, the stupidity in this group was a little extreme, even for fiction. The interactions and dialogue between the characters felt forced and doesn’t flow well, and the language was pretty cheesy. I did like how the people they encountered acted more like I imagine people would in this situation, ranging from helpful to hostile, and everything in between. Overall, not a horrible read, but the Regan character made it a very difficult read. I never found myself rooting for her, I just wanted her to shut up.

Excellent start to a new series. Surviving the Swamp is a thrilling EMP post-apocalyptic series. A group of misfits with no survival experience is selected for the cast of season ten's "Skin of Your Teeth Survival' reality show. The purpose is only to have them fail miserably. Unfortunately, real disaster strikes in the form of an EMP. Now the novice survivalist, with the help of pro-prepper, must find a way to make it through the treacherous swamplands of Florida to safety.

Grace Hamilton once again captures us with her incredible creativity and stellar character development. The premise of the storyline is engaging, entertaining, and suspenseful. I enjoyed the interplay of the cast and the various personalities coming together in a post-emp world.

Excellent narration by Connie Shabshab. She emulated the characters' personalities, emotions, and intensity of the scenes, very nicely. The Surviving the Swamp is a fast-paced thriller with quality plot and characters. I strongly recommend this audiobook. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Can they deal with everything in the swamp?

I don't normally read apocalyptic stories, but I did enjoy this one.

Regan has looked out for herself for a very long time and decided to try to win a survivalist show.

Wolf is the host of the survivalist show, he has spent time with each contestant and has been giving them a bit of information that they will need to survive each challange.

Regan is determined to win but when an EMP goes off the show means nothing. Because of the location the contestants are trying to survive they are stranded in the middle of the swamp.

This is just the beginning of the adventure and worth reading to find out what happens. You can probably stop after this book or if you are like me you will want to see how the characters develop after this story.

Definitely want to read the next book.

Great book that fed in to my ‘naked and afraid’ and EMP fascination. Ok, so they weren’t naked but they were on a survivalist show. I want to meet Wolf, he sounds like my dream guy. Regan is a bit of an idiot at times, girl jump on that and get out of your damn head. She made some stupid decisions and didn’t even really learn from them. Maybe someone can get through to her, eventually. I did think it was strange that Wolf waited so long before rushing off to his daughter. I know he had faith she was safe but still. There are no guarantees in life.
Connie Shabshab did an amazing job narrating. I think this is the first time I’ve listed to a book by her.

This is an intriguing story that once I started reading I couldn't put it down. A survival reality show gets real when they are hit with an EMP (electromagnetic Pulse) and everything changes. The journey Wolf and the group go on had me on the edge of my seat through every swampy twist and turn. I have to say it was kind of creepy too. This book is well written, has interesting characters and it really makes you wonder how each of us would react if this really were to happen in the future. I loved Grace Hamilton's AFTER THE SHIFT series and am excited about her new series, SURVIVALIST REALITY SHOW. In SURVIVING THE SWAMP, a group of reality show contestants vie for a big payoff by "surviving" 4 weeks in the Florida Everglades. It's all fun, games, and stress--until communication is lost and the camera crew fails to return. Nothing electrical or battery-powered works. It's true not just inside the swamp.

SURVIVING THE SWAMP will rivet the attention of prepper readers and of lovers of attention too.

This book starts off with an unplanned change, people were expecting to be filmed and doing one thing only to be hit with an EMP knocking out the electronics. The story-line was interesting and some of the characters had a very well described fast moving arc! The author has a great descriptive writing technique that helped to keep the story centered and focused. I enjoyed reading this book and I’m looking forward to more.

I hope Regan calms down in the next one.

Boy this main character was really hard to connect to. She acts like a spoiled brat with the whole “her way or the highway” ‘tude, which does get her into some serious trouble. She has some serious emotional baggage that I hope she works her way thru in the next books.

All in all, the premise is interesting but I feel like the story needed to be filled out more. The feel of the apocalypse just wasn’t there to me, for some reason. It felt like they walked into a town of mean people and low resources. That’s it.

I'll just say my skin is still crawling. I'll never, never go near a swamp. Now that being said, I absolutely loved this book. The characters were all very believable and varied in personalities. Most of us will be able to identify with some of their strengths and shortcomings. I highly recommend this series. Thanks Grace Hamilton!

I don't very often read from "new" series, because I'm impatient. I took a chance here, and read this book immediately when it came up. Now, I'm going to fret and stew until she gets the second one done. This was an excellent book. Great character building and descriptions. I love it when I can "see" the characters. As with all of her other series, it is a definite page turner and I want more!

This started out with people on a reality TV show about surviving in the swamp. While they are there an EMP strikes and power is gone. It was pretty interesting and I intend to read the whole series. The lead character is somewhat typical of heroes today in that she is filled with angst and has had a horrific childhood. That is getting old as a plot line. Still I read it in one sitting and now am halfway through Book 2.

I'm good

There was an abundance of knowledge provided with this story, but one book about Reagan's stubbornness is enough for me. I'm sure she'll grow and change with the coming books but I'm good.

I am enjoying the series. I gave the book 4 stars because it isn’t the best EMP or apocalyptic type book but far from the worst. I’m not connecting well with the main Protagonist. I know she is supposed to be a survivor. But she is abrasive. The book is well written and the narration is very good.
