This thorough, step-by-step text provides a comprehensive introduction to educational research. Here is complete coverage of each step of the research process and thorough coverage of the most widely-used research methodologies. Step-by-step analysis of real research articles is included. End-of-chapter worksheets, comprehensive coverage of data analysis, and how to prepare research proposals and reports make it appropriate both for courses that focus on doing research and for those that stress how to read and understand research. To keep students engaged, the authors' writing is simple and direct. The presentations have been enhanced with clarifying examples, summarizing charts, tables and diagrams, and a friendly two-color design. This is the only copiously illustrated text about educational research available. In the new fourth edition a new chapter on single-subject research has been added. Much new information has been added to the discussion of Qualitative Research which has doubled in size to two chapters. New examples of unethical practices have been added to Chapter 3. New sections have been developed for chaos theory, statistical power, and latent variable structural modeling. The reviewing literature chapter (Chapter 5) now emphasizes computer and Internet rather than manual searches. There are all new examples of each methodology with critiques of these new examples. One hundred new illustrations have been added throughout the text. Other changes for the fourth edition calculations from Chapter 10 on descriptive statistics have been relocated to the appendix; new material on parametric techniques for categorical data has been added to Chapter 11, and new case studies have been added including, in Chapter 20 - Pupil occupancy time in classroom settings across cultures. Free PowerPoint electronic slides are available for free download from the Fraenkel fourth edition web site.
An excellent resource for those who are new in the field of research. To me what makes this book unique is the way the authors have organized the content of this book. It is well structured and easy to understand.
His is a very detailed book, however not overly 'interesting' for a student looking to improve their research skills. It is however very good for teachers and uni students who are looking at improving their research skills and/or teaching others. The information is rather technical and American based, though the chapters are clearly outlined so if you want to look up one type of research method you can. Gives detailed instructions on many different types of research from interviewing, Statistics, experiments, surveys and literature etc.
Much of the content in this book was unnecessary fluff, and even the authors know that; they take care to highlight the only portions that you actually need to read. Additionally, the LearnSmart text was extremely cumbersome to use and repeatedly logged me out due to inactivity, even when I had been active during my entire session. When it would log me out, it would also return me to points that I had completed hours ago, as well, but you can't skip through to specific pages - you have to click "next" one by one. Definitely would not recommend.
Concise and accessible, even when deriving the formula for standard deviations (“it looks complicated, but it’s not,” the text reassures you). Illustrations are a bit lame and need an update (or to be replaced with less lame photos). I had one of the co-authors, Hyun, as my instructor, and she was excellent. I'm not sure which parts she contributed, but I wouldn't be surprised if the book owes a lot of its crisp lucidity to her.
Too many examples that honestly blurred already unclear issues out for me even more. Used it in Mental Health Counseling program too, so most of the examples seemed useless to me. More visual explanation would be appreciated and I don't mean cartoons this textbook is full of, but rather graphs and alike.
Clearly written and informative, this text provides an overview of research methods--quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods--used by academics and practitioners. I noticed some factual errors in the section about literature searches, but recommend it overall.
This was the text book used for my Intro to Research and Stats class. It's a good introduction to educational research - nothing outstanding, but a solid book.
Very readable textbook, easy to understand as a basic introduction to the concepts of research. Was a helpful resource during the class and may begin again if I ever do another research paper!
