Reaching for the Moon, a soulful guide to the menstrual cycle for girls aged 9-14, trusted and recommended by thousands of parents and their daughters as a nurturing way to approach a key rite of passage.
A friend whose opinion I trust reviewed this book positively. I wanted to find something realistic but positive for a young woman approaching menarche, and this book fits the bill. It's got both the "rite of passage" aspect and the "cramps suck and here's what you can do to help ease them" aspect. I really like how Pearce encourages journaling and awareness of the changes we experience throughout the month at different times of our cycle. When we're feeling bloated and/or out of sorts, it's comforting (somewhat) to be able to look at the calendar and recognize it as part of a bigger cycle---and know that it's going to pass at some point. It's a little New Age-y, but not overly so (at least not for me, but given my fairly high tolerance for New Age-y stuff, I might not be the best judge of how someone with a different background might view this book).
This book can easily be read in an afternoon (or less), or it could be used as a springboard for journaling and reflection over a longer period of time.
Read this to preview for upcoming puberty needs. Loved it. Many reviews said it was too hippy dippy, but it was just right for me. (That is more a commentary for me than the book.) It said everything I want my girls to understand and celebrate about their amazing bodies. It had enough info so as to keep them from being concerned, but it can be read within an hour or so for the older girls. Lots of ideas for menarche celebrations with lots of flexibility and honoring our own personalities. Will totally be using this as we approach puberty with the girls.
I couldn't ask for a sweeter, more empowering book to welcome my daughter into her moon cycle! This book said everything I want her to hear (which she often can't hear from her mom, because ew). It's also everything I wished someone had said to me when I began to bleed. Now I've just put it in her hands and hoped she absorbs it!
Wonderful and unique! I will be honored to give this book to my daughter, to celebrate and ensure she learns to view her body and spirit with reverence and love. Lucy Pierce does exemplorary work, and this book teaches young women about menstruation in a very honest, kind and accessible way. Thank you for this gift!
This is the book I needed, we all needed, to help us through understanding and getting our periods! Such a great book for younger people going through it, or reading it as an adult and wishing we had read it!
This book is very informative. A little old for 9 year olds, but great for teens. To mention sanitary towels to a novice and stressing the environment was a little beyond, because I remember a time when that was all there was.....other than that it was a good book for both mother and daughter to read.
my mom gifted me this book many years ago, and i never got around to read it but now i wish i had done it sooner. i think every person with a period should read this book when they first get it
