Stand: Putting on the full armour of God

Rate this book
When David volunteered to meet Goliath's challenge to Israel, King Saul was concerned about what David would wear into battle. In fact, Saul placed his own armour on David. But it didn't fit, and it would have proved more of a hindrance than a help in David's battle. He was better off without the king's armour, carrying just his sling and five smooth stones. But there's no reason for today's believer to be gazing off toward the battlefield mumbling, I just don't have anything to wear. In Ephesians 6, God tells believers exactly what to wear to stand firm and His armour is tailor made. Stand will reacquaint you with each piece of armour God has provided and you'll learn how to use that armour in your daily fight on the battlefield.

An A5 sized book based around Ephesians 6: 10-18, which I received as a gift at the end of a Church group where we discussed the passage (about the armour of God) over dinner. The book, which make a good daily devotional over a fortnight, starts with the idea of making a stand, and then looks at the Enemy we are battling, his tactics and how the different pieces of the armour allow us to deal with these tactics and stand firm.

Satan Hates Integrity – The Belt of Truth (dealing with division)
Silence the Accuser – the Breastplate of Righteousness (dealing with denouncing)
Blessed Are the Balanced – The Shoes of Peace (dealing with destroying)
Put out the fires – The Shield of Faith (dealing with doubts)
Think like a soldier – The Helmet of Salvation (dealing with discouragement)
Spiritual Swordmanship – The Sword of the Spirit (dealing with denial)

The author is keen to emphasise the interconnectedness of the armour – and the chapters therefore often reinforce each other. I found the Breastplate and Shield chapters the strongest.

The last four chapters look at the importance of prayer (which is how the passage ends), scripture and true worship – the latter two I feel slightly let down the compactness of the book.

This is a really encouraging and accessible book exploring the meaning and significance of the 'armour of God' that Paul wrote about.

I appreciated that Warren Wiersbe didn't fill this book with 'theologian-speak' but used clears everyday language to explain big concepts.

My only criticism is that, in keeping things short and simple, he occasionally made some sweeping statements or judgements (such as criticising worship songs that are 'about a problem') which might have benefitted from a little bit more nuance.

That said, even though it's short, I found this book challenging and encouraging in equal measure. It challenged my sometimes too relaxed attitude to the Christian life and encouraged me to be more passionate about prayer!

This was a really accessible read laying out clearly how to put on the armour of God and live our lives to the fullest. This book clearly explained the function of each section of armour and how we as Christians can equip them in the modern world. I find Warren W. Wiersbe's writing so easy to read and digest, I would really recommend his books.

A great deep-dive into the armor of God. It is a great tool to help you better understand each piece of armor and how it all fits together in order to help us resist the Devil’s schemes.

A decent book geared towards a youth group or small study. I'd quibble with some of the language but he does a good job of emphasizing the gift-ness of the armor.
