From the letter A to the letter Z, B is for Breathe celebrates the many ways children can express their feelings and develop coping skills at an early age. Fun, cute, and exciting illustrations, this colorful book teaches kids simple ways to cope with fussy and frustrating emotions. This book will inspire kids to discuss their feelings, show positive behaviors, and practice calm down strategies.
Read for my toddler's bedtime. Fantastic introduction to the letters of the alphabet and the use of words with each letter in a sentence. Sentences were an actions and they are positive for kids.
Was curious to see how this topic would be dealt with and also how they would tackle the alphabet with coping methods.
First of all the book doesn't go into what fussy and frustrating feelings may entail but instead is hedging bets that you may have already over those with your child or as a child reader you know what the author means by that phrase. Anyway the rest of the book is most definitely an alphabet presentation of different coping methods with each letter having a formulaic presentation of the "letter" is for "___" with most being about four words long unless they are meant to embrace more than just the one thing such as xylophone and other musical instruments. Secondly the word that is being used as the letter subject is put in all caps to make it standout to the reader.
The rest of the book are brightly colored illustrations that are full page size with the text at the very top in many cases although there are a few exceptions.
Since of its brief presentation and bright colors I can definitely see this book being included to help young readers talk about coping methods or emotions in general. But since of the breadth of the subject and some of the vagueness of the entries I would most definitely suggest this as an adult-child read so if something does appeal to them such as a glitter jar they may have assistance in getting the item researched as well as made.
B is for Breathe by Melissa Boys is a great book filled with strategies for children to use to cope with big feelings. I loved this book because all children deal with intense emotions and can benefit from learning how to handle them. Without teaching these strategies they will not know what they can do to regulate their emotions. Books like B is for Breathe can help children feel less alone as other people experience similar feelings and can give advice on how they manage them. Overall this book did a wonderful job accurately portraying children's mental health is a comforting, informative way.
B is for Breathe: The ABCs of Coping with Fussy and Frustrating Feelings
B is for Breathe is a cute and amazing children's book in A to Z alphabetical order. This is a wonderful concept to teach children about alphabets and various activities . I think this is the most amazing alphabet book ever which teaches children about expressing their feelings and some simple activities like H for Hug , K for kick ,R for read ,W for write, Y for yoga and a lot more . It's a beautiful book that talks about self love, shows positive behaviors, and practices calm down strategies.
This book is a wonderful read for children so they can understand how to deal with fuzzy emotions and feelings. The Illustrations in this book are just mind blowing and kids can easily understand this book with the picture itself. This book is worth reading with the children and can be used as a teaching tool in school libraries. I just want to admire the author for writing such a wonderful book for children which can be read daily with them to grow them as confident human beings so I highly recommend this book to all the parents out there. perfect for 1+
B is for Breathe is a great informational non-fiction book to teach children how to deal with their emotions. The author, Dr. Melissa Boyd, is a Clinical Psychologist and has three children of her own. Each letter of the alphabet represents creative and fun ways for children to calm themselves down. Dr. Boyd created thought-provoking, kid-friendly calming techniques. However, it may be difficult for younger children to sit through the whole book as there is no plot. The illustrations correspond to the text and are interesting for children to look at. The illustrator was sure to depict diverse characters that represent many different backgrounds.
This story is such an amazing tool for early childhood educators as we search for new resources to naturally introduce social-emotional learning and development into everyday lessons. I was referred to this book by a peer of mine who recommended it as a great way to merge language development, social-emotional skills, and other domains of early childhood development; it did not disappoint!
Although the story does foster literacy skills (specifically print awareness, print motivation, letter recognition, and vocabulary expansion) for children as young as toddler-age, the story is really useful to the teacher themselves as they show young children ways to process and positively act on their biggest feelings. Older toddlers and early preschool children will probably be able to replicate and reenact some of the 26 activities listed without prompting while younger toddlers may benefit from learning about each coping strategy bit by bit, with authentic opportunities being provided for young children to use them in situations of high emotion/social conflict/overstimulation. A few of the phonetic sounds are not the best early examples of beginning letter sounds, but still a good bouncing off point for working on the alphabetic principle (pairing written letters to the sound it is associated with).
I highly recommend this story for educators with the goal of pairing explicit instruction (i.e. alphabetic practice/phonic awareness during structured group gatherings) with everyday behavioral lessons (i.e. SEL techniques, social etiquette), but would say that for children under preschool age some adaptations would have to be made to keep the attention of a younger audience.
I had never read this book until it was recommended by a peer.
I feel like this book would be a wonderful read-aloud for toddler and preschool-age children. The letters, followed by a word with the same beginning sound as that page's letter, help to build alphabet knowledge, phonemic awarenss and early print concepts. Young readers are able to see and identify letters on the pages like the ones they may be learning to write. The illustrations are simple and allow a younger reader to use the picture to determine what the story is telling about.
Reading this story aloud with young children would provide the opportunity to model how to read a book. An adult might share about the different parts of the book, how to hold the book, how to turn the pages, and reading from left to right and top to bottom. The story allows for many opportunities to for young children to ask questions or talk about the topic (feelings). This is a great way to increase verbal communication and the ability for children to share their own thoughts and ideas.
This book would also allow young readers to engage in the story by completing a letter scavenger hunt during a read-aloud or expanding the story by finding other things around them that start with the same letter sound. Another extension would be to match lower case letters to the upper case letters found in the story.
It is a sweet alphabet story that addresses a need in the social-emotional domain.
The author used the letters of the alphabet to explain different happenings in daily life. A pictorial view of every concept was given. Some social concepts were covered along with ways to relax the body (Boyd, M. M. (2019). B is for breath. The abcs of coping with fussy and frustrated feelings. Melissa Munro Boyd).
In my classroom, I would utilize this book for preschool to kindergarten as designated by Amazon. It has easy to understand pictures for every concept that is covered.
I would make this book part of my library to go over coping skills with the young children. I would let them know all the positive ways to handle feelings of frustration. I would explain the benefits of doing this.
A fantastic and simple guide to mindfulness for young children! This book uses each letter of the alphabet to introduce different calming techniques, with "B is for Breathe" being the core focus. The book helps kids understand the importance of breathing deeply and being mindful of their emotions in a fun and accessible way. The colorful illustrations and rhyming text make it easy for children to follow along. It's an excellent tool for teaching emotional regulation and encouraging relaxation practices in a way that's engaging and enjoyable for little ones.
I am a mother and I am a therapist. I work with adults and work with children. This book is beautiful for everyone! It was beautiful to share a book with my children that shared pictures of Kidd that look like them. It’s an wonderful book written in simple and plan language and a reminder of how to take care of ourselves holistically. Ready to add a hard copy to my library!
This is an interactive book that uses the alphabet to tell a story. The children will learn new vocabulary words to increase their language skills. Also, this book teaches children about their feelings and how to express them in a positive way. There are different strategies given to calm children's minds and bodies when they are having a difficult time calming down - the strategies are age appropriate.
Learning to self-regulate and respond to big emotions has a tremendous impact on the social, emotional and physical well-being of young children. "B is for Breathe" is a wonderful book that provides some great ideas for things children (and adults!) can do to calm/sooth themselves. The illustrations are beautiful and make the content accessible to children whenever they need it. And the alphabet learning is an added bonus!
Great way to introduce young children to their ABCs and incorporate relaxation techniques. As a parent, my favorite letters were U (UNPLUG electronics) and Z (sleep) because I can definitely relate and cannot emphasize enough it’s importance on a daily basis.
Another great alphabet book which introduces different activities to cope with stress. A book not only to children but can be used by adults too. The author Melissa Boyd is a clinical psychologist and has used activities which are simple. The detailed illustrations make each activity easy to understand.
As a 28-year-old woman with full blown anxiety, it absolutely warms my heart to see a book available for children on how to deal with their feelings and frustrations. I could have definitely used something like this years ago...I recommend to everyone of ALL ages!!
This story uses very calming language, and is very easy on the eyes. Showing great images and words. Using the ABC's, the alphabet, something that children will already know and showing them ways to cope with stress. Showing young children how to deal with things and teaching the their coping skills is very important for them to learn form a young age.
This book is amazing! I love all the ways and examples the author gives that will lead to positive mindful changes for child mental health. The illustrations are adorable and I had a lot of fun reading this book with my kids! Highly recommend adding it to your library!!
The vibrant images that adorned each page wowed me. Each letter of the alphabet represented a short statement describing a positive Mental Health attribute. I wish there was an activity page at the end. This is a read aloud book it has education plus ways to help children's mental health. This is one of my favorites I would love to have in class for kinder to 1st graders to start.
A cute ABC book to teach of ways to cope. This book represents students of different race which is a nice visual and teaches kids ways to cope. I will read this to future students as it meets SEL requirements as well and can be interactive by asking students how do they cope with different situations. Grade level is Prek-2
I bought a physical copy of this book for a friend with several small children. It has lovely pictures that feel as relaxing as the message of the book itself and has been well received by the giftee. Definitely recommend to anyone with active kids!
A good basic book helping kids to cope with stress and anxiety. A parent and child can expand on each letter with projects that fit the child's interests and abilities.
This is such a great book to talk to your kid about dealing with frustration and fuzzy feelings. It shows alternatives to throwing tantrums and children can pick their favorite way to deal with frustration. We love this book!
A very simple ABC book with coping mechanisms and positive practices. Some things like “V is for Vision board” will require the parent, teachers or guardian to explain what a vision board is, but this can be a good conversation or activity starter.
I am a high school counselor and, even though this book is intended for a much younger audience, I will keep a copy in my office. I wish I could get picture cards of the illustrations!
Simple, easy ways for children to find their calm place. Love that this book, unlike some others, was truly diverse. I'm going to keep this one around to remember for myself.
I love and appreciate reading books to my children with pictures of people that look like them. I love the fact that this educates our community about things not everyone knows.
These ABCs teach readers how to use coping skills to keep a healthy mind. The illustrations are adorable! Readers will relate to the character’s expressions and simple language.
I enjoyed the read. I also appreciate that the author incorporated colleges including an HBCU on some of the sweatshirts. Great tool for parents to use to teach their kids coping skills.
