Nick James is the author of books covering many genres. From ‘The Misplaced Man Trilogy’ and ‘The Victorian Vampire’ to ‘What Zombie Apocalypse’. He has now hit the ground running with science fiction titles; ‘The Time Travelling Tourist’ and his recent release ‘They Stand Among Us’, an alien invasion story. All are written in his easy-to-read style, with action and humor. He has countless other stories and sequels in the planning stages.
Chasing The Dragon (The Misplaced Man Book 2) is another fun-filled book by author Nick James. If you missed the first book, you might want to pick it up to read after or before this book to get a better idea about the main character Sam. With that said, the author clearly writes with a tongue in cheek style, garnering a lot of laughs along the way. Sam has a wry sense of humor even in the most dire of situations. Take for example the beginning of the book, when he is attacked in his London area home. Not only does Sam survive, but he becomes embroiled in a ton of controversy, through which he struggles to break free. Sam never loses his verve for life or his appreciation for the female form, even the two officers who come to his home to investigate. An exhilarating read, one that will reverberate in your memory for a long time, mostly for the character of Sam, whom you can't help but root for, even if he is kind of obnoxious. Fun book, and highly recommended.
This is one of those rare moments where the second book is on par with the original.
Nick has maintained the humor and fast pace that he established in the first novel and has developed the characters even more so.
This is a quick, enjoyable and light hearted read which anyone who was raised in the 80's will like, and has left me wanting to know what's going to happen in the next part.
The story is narrated by Sam, a tech guy who has a banker girlfriend, Bunny. The two live their life like any other couple. The start of the story gave the impression of a romantic novel that had couples openly love and care for each other. Sam works for a mobile app company called Shimmering Dreams. The software Sam’s company makes is strange as it enables the user of the app to download their dreams straight from their subconscious while they sleep. The two live a pretty ordinary life facing common challenges any couple faces until weird things start happening in the lead character's life. The author's development of Sam is what makes him a distinct character. I enjoyed reading Sam’s conversations and how he dealt with situations. He also has a light heart and a funny bone which made him unique. His personal traits made him my most favorite character. The book gets exciting when we see how Sam has zero control of most things he does. The techie looks good and perfect from any strangers' view but only he understands how difficult it is to be Sam. Reading about the forces controlling Sam was both intriguing and eerie. Sam’s life took an interesting twist after the attack by the lone gunman. Controversies followed him, he got involved in funny businesses and he had to fight some struggles. Sam’s love for eighties music and movie references together with the unseen forces that were controlling him made the reading a little eccentric. Even with all that was happening, one couldn’t help but fall in love with the main character. His habit of taking things lightly and appreciation of females made him a delightful character. Nick James is a creative genius. The plot never stops being captivating. The reader falls in love with the diversity of the characters and their roles. The writing style the author used is smooth and easy to follow. One notable thing in this book is the character formation. Sam, Bunny, Bethany, Peter Sanderson, Sharon Andrews, and others had different qualities that made their roles unique. Every character executed their roles well. Conversations which included dialogues and arguments were also fun to read. The writer knows how to make the conversations not too long to avoid the monotony that comes with lengthy conversations in stories. ‘Chasing The Dragon (The Misplaced Man)’ will entertain you and have you laugh through some situations. You will love some characters and feel let down by others. Bunny was great but disappointed as she sometimes failed to calculate her steps. Her anger issues came as a blessing and a curse to her, making her personality a little complex. I like her when she came to help Sam during the gun attack. The storyline is brilliant and the plot excellent as every chapter intensifies. The sense of humor in the author’s text was fantastic. It is impossible to keep the book down once you start the first chapter. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy crime thrillers.
Chasing the Dragon is a fictional book by Nick James, and it is the second book in his series. This book follows the life of Sam and his girlfriend Bunny. What seems to be a normal, everyday life for Sam and his girlfriend, turns into a rollercoaster ride of mayhem. We see Sam, armed with 80s references and sarcasm and his girlfriend, Bunny, is armed with anger issues and a pension for violence navigate their lives. Through a series of wild events, we find there is corruption, assassins, and a whole lot of violence within this world built by James.
The book immediately started with action, and it seems as if it were written and designed in a way to cause intrigue, suspicion, and to hook the reader. However, after the beginning of the book, it seemed somewhat disorganized and hectic, but not in a negative way. I was not sure where the book was going at all. I could not guess what was coming next. It was like watching a fast-paced movie unfold before your eyes, and you had to really pay attention to detail to understand what was going on throughout it.
The book also switched between points of view often. At first it seemed to not be seamless, meaning that it was a bit erratic and made the book read as hectic and totally disorganized. However, after reading through part of the book for a bit, the change in point of view began to make sense and feel more authentic. Referring back to the movie, it is like a classic crime movie, with multiple people, and it shows from each vantage point to get in each character’s head. While it was interesting to see from these different points of view, with a third person point of view twist at the end, it did come off as rather confusing at times, and I would have to check back to see whose point of view I was reading from. While it is a minor detail of the book, it was my only serious issue.
I think my favorite character in the book was Bunny. Though I was concerned with some areas where it seemed as if a character was racist, but that was the character itself, and it did not seem, at least to me, that the author was being racist, which I think is important to note. Bunny was funny, albeit violent, and seemed to have a talent for getting into fights and finishing them. It gave an interesting twist on Asian women, who are often portrayed as meek. Female assassins in the book were also intriguing to read.
I had a hard time putting this book down. While I found some of the characters to be utterly exhausting, (Sam was a bit much in the beginning) I found the book to give me that want to continue reading and not put the book down. I would recommend this book to those who like crime and thrillers.
An hilarious mystery – the further adventures of Sam Blades
Author Nick James made an impressive debut of a new series with THE MISPLACED MAN and now he offers the second installment in that series with CHASING THE DRAGON. His writing style is already polished and he has decided how to blend espionage mystery with a sense of humor that makes his novels well worth the attention of a wide reading audience. He offers no biographical information: his language suggests he is of British origin.
Sam Blades continues as the lead character an das is his style the author provides a portal to this tale in his Prologue – ‘Sam and his girlfriend, Bunny, a Hong Kong expat, are your normal professional couple living in the borough of Barking in the city of London. He works for a mobile app company called Shimmering dreams. Their software allows the buyer of the app to download their dreams directly form their subconscious while they sleep. Bunny works for a multinational bank. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Despite how it looks form the outside, Sam’s life is being controlled by forces seen and unseen. His passion for eighties music and film references will only get him so far! After just six months in his new job, he was attacked in his own home by a lone gunman, who seemed to hate him, and his fish. Luckily Bunny, along with her anger issues, saved the day with the help of a prop from the movie Kill Bill. Will he be able to live his life the way he wants? Or will his enemies conquer? We shall see if a crooked policeman and a drug- and drink-riddled boss along with his Chinese transsexual girlfriend/fixer will win the day over poor Sam.’
Just the right balance between fascinating characters and incredible circumstances, all told with a sharp wit. Nick James is a solid talent to watch closely! Recommended.
