Academy books are still fairly new to me but I’m really liking them. Sloane Murphy has been on my radar for a while now but this is my first book of hers. I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint.
Eden is new at the Black water academy. She is trying to make friends and work out who can be trusted. Black water academy is for paranormal students. It’s split into houses and the students have different gifts. Eden is more than a talent.
This is the start of a series and I picked it up from Amazon for free. Book 2 is available on KU and the final instalment is out later in the year. This book will leave you wanting more. It has a paranormal school feel; with drama, flirting and a lesson to learn.
Well, this is awkward. I feel literally like the only one who didn't like this book - or worse! DNFed it!
What happened? I don't get it? I can't stop using question marks now? I don't know if some things I say are considered spoilery or not, so proceed with caution.
- I really didn't expect to read a story set in a rip off of a cheap Hogwarts? The Houses and their descriptions are embarrassing enough, without the addition of a fifth House which can basically be described as the Mary Sue House, which barely ever gets new students because Mary Sues are so rare?
- Guess in which House our girl is sorted? Yep.
- Do all smart-ass girls wear leather jackets? Is it mandatory? Is being a loner makes you too cool for, well, pretty much anything so far?
- Is that a Love Triangle that I see in the distance? If I had 3 wishes, and 3 wishes only, one of them would be to eradicate the trope from this world.
- Mad flip-flops of stomachs and flutters of thingies for da hot boyz at something like 9% of the book? I'm an old-school fan of both Slow Burn and The Chase, so yeah. InstaLust will not work for me either.
- Bitchy girls, mostly being bitchy because they all swoon over Hot Boy from Slytherin Scorpio House? Can. We. Stop. With. That. FFS.
So considering all this, it's no surprise that this book and I didn't click. Maybe I should have kept reading? And Draco would have turned out to be only a spy in his own House because he's a Hufflepuff at heart? And Girl would have rejected both boys in favour of...good taste? More certainly, this book is just not for me.
This book in my eyes is 5 stars right across the board! It has secrets, supernatural creatures, mystery and a great plot. I was hooked from chapter one. I do enjoy a good supernatural story! This one felt so different in the beginning, so much mystery in Eden and a few other members.
Eden is holding a secret only one other person knows and she took it to the grave. Each page I finished had me guessing what could possible be this huge secret! And of course the book ended with me freaking out about needing more. I definitely suggest taking time to read this story! I know I will again and again.
WOW!! Sloane is back, i freaking loved this book,i have so missed her writing, her pnr world is just amazing the story telling is highly additive,it just picks you up and takes you along for the ride, where you don't get off until it dumps you out at the end,a end you don't want
This first book in the Black Water Academy was totally captivating and additive,i read this in one sitting as i couldn't put this book down.It starts with 17 year old Eden who is a orphan going to the PNR school as she is special and the supernatural society doesn't know what she is yet as she is keeping secrets about what she is,all they know is that she is a vampire. This is a school where you are taught to hone in on there powers and learn how to use and control them.
Eden meets Creed and Ethan who help her with her powers and they become close, but not all is as it seems and i just love Creeds character he is the bad boy of the two and am definitely rooting for him. This story flowed along beautifully and you get to meet all the characters which i loved, can't wait for the second book as this does end on a cliffy.Five Huge Magical Stars.
Marked by Sloane Murphy is the first book in her Black Water Academy Series and I'm happy to say, this is a winner. She's back and her writing is better than ever. Eden is a 17 year old girl, all alone and about to attend Black Water Academy, The PNR school. Eden is special in a world of special beings and her skills are undiscovered, she carries deep dark secrets. The book contains just the right amount of danger, drama, meet cute and love that it had me glued to the pages and made me read it, cover to cover, in just one sitting. Marked is unputdownable, a nailbiting pageturner. I must say I'm addicted to the story and I really, really can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. I highly, Highly recommend Marked and wish I could give more than 5 stars.
☆☆☆☆ 3.5 STARS ☆☆☆☆ **Copy provided by Tour Host, in exchange for an honest review**
I love the idea of this book. It reminded me so much of Harry Potter and Twilight together. It’s really a great idea having this kind of story. I love the characters, but I wanted to know more. I see how great this series will be, but I don’t really feel like this was a complete book. It’s more of a novella. The story was too short to really get to know the characters, there wasn’t enough time to really have character depth. Right when the story started to get going it ended. That doesn’t mean I’m done with the series, oh no. I need more, I just hope the next book is a lot longer than this one. I can’t wait.
This was such a fantastic read. It’s like a cross between Harry Potter and Vampire Academy but with Sloane’s own unique supernatural twist to it.
17 year old Eden enrols at Black Water Academy after the death of her guardian, Dannika. Black Water Academy is a place where teen supernaturals go to hone in on their powers and learn how use and control them. Eden is a vampire but there is a lot more to her than meets the eye.
I love Sloane’s style of writing. It was written in first person and once again it was so easy to get swept away into a whole new world. I loved the characters, although I did wish for more character development, delving into their lives at the academy and more backstory but that’s just me being greedy and wanting more, more, more story! And no doubt we’ll find out more in the next book! Which, by the way, is it ready yet? I neeeed to know what happens after that twisty plot twist! I’m so impatient haha! I’m really intrigued by Ruby. She’s so peppy! It makes me wonder if she’s hiding something. I loved the romance in this book. I’m a sucker for romance and there’s a bit of a love triangle going on between Eden, Creed and Ethan. I was actually unsure about who I wanted Eden to get with and I’m still not entirely sure whether I trust Creed either. I know I’ve said it before but....is book two ready yet? If you love the supernatural/paranormal genre then this book is for you! I wholly recommend you read it!
Eden DeMontford lost everyone she loved. And she can not tell anyone that. Near the age of 18 and with many secrets she needs to protect, she is sent to a place that can be her salvation. Or her downfall.
Old and magical halls. Welcome to the Black Water Academy, where teens with supernatural powers are trained to keep their powers in check and learn their place in the world. Eden does not know yet, but soon, she'll find she's not the only one keeping secrets.
Mysteries, intrigues, dangers and conspiracies. In a place where nothing is what it seems, with her emotions on edge and her life at risk, she will learn the meaning of the word betrayal and the true meaning of a broken heart.
With fluid writing, well-constructed narrative and revelations to the last page, the author leaves the reader intrigued and thirsty for the upcoming events in the second book of the series.
'This place isn't a school it is a place designed to trap you.
This book is so well written you get so drawn into the story you believe it is factual.
The author has laid it out in a manner that makes it so enjoyable and easy to read.
The characters are so real. They each have individual traits and come to life as the story unfolds Eden is a young girl having to face her changing abilities alone, she is untrusting but also carefree.
When she starts at Black Water Academy she plans on staying in the background however, that doesn't go to plan when she has boys fighting over her.
If you enjoy angsty paranormal romance then one click this book.
So Paranormal isn't my typical genre and it has to be done just right in order for me to able to stick with it. Sloane hits the MARK every single time. Pun intended. Marked follows Eden in her initiation hand settling as a student enrolled in Black Water Academy. A magical school for Vampires, werewolves and other creatures it's host to most of the story and beings in her magical works. You're introduced to a few very different characters. Being wise and character wise. The scene setting and characters were amazing and interesting. As always, Sloane writes an incredible paranormal book. I'm transported back to my love of The Descent books when reading her write paranormal. Marked will leave you dangling at the edge of your seat, aching for more, in true Sloane fashion. Book 2 - Chosen - releases August 22nd.

What a way to start a series! Marked is the first book in the Black Water Academy series by Sloane Murphy and I can't wait for more!!!
This paranormal series has everything and is a great start to what will make an amazing series. Marked is the groundwork for what's to come and gives a glimpse of the stuff we don't know. That has grabbed my attention and left me wanting more.
This book is so well written that, right from the start, the mystery about Black Water Academy grabs and pulls you in. All the integral parts that start weaving a web that builds the story is amazing.
Eden is approaching her eighteenth birthday and has not had an easy life. She is dropped off at the Black Water Academy where all the supers in the area come to learn, handle and grow their skills and powers. But secrets always have a way of coming out and the past can sneak up on you even when you are not ready.
What I loved about this paranormal book is that it did not restrict itself to just one supernatural entity. There is werewolves, vampires, fae and shifters. There is so many different levels to this story that have me excited. The details and connections between characters are perfect. The ending is something else. I can't wait for book two.
This is my first book by Sloane Murphy and I am hooked and will be reading more of her stories.
***ARC received in exchange for an honest review***
I have to say this: I didn't expect Marked to have the plot, characters, and flow of a Harry Potter fan-fiction, but it was nonetheless entertaining and likable.
The writing and dialogue can be awkward and clumpy at times, and the premise is very much 2009 Chosen One iM nOtLiKe OtHer GiRlS , but I love murdering, cruel main characters. I'm also a sucker for soulmates concept. Most scenes are quite cringe, but the overarching plot and premise is enjoyable.
Marked is a 200 page (basically romance) novel, so world-building, character development, dynamic plot, and a satisfying conclusion were all definitely there and satisfactory considering the length. Impressed. I can't see myself re-reading this, but if it Black Water Academy #2 happens to fall across my desk, I would be intrigued.
As far as I can tell, Marked is a prime example of what authors strive for in fiction! There is a recipe that when altered can lead to greatness like Kate Atkinson's Life After Life, and then there's not so great series that sorta stumble through the story like Fifty Shades Freed. I enjoyed the 1st 2 Fifty Shades, but book 3 was just "meh"! Anyway, Marked may not be considered a jewel of literature to mainstream critics, but it's literally textbook perfect. And I for one enjoyed every sentence written! Lemme break this down for ya
PLOT: A tried and true "coming-of-age" story of a teen with a tragic past overcoming her fears and finding out just who and what she is with the help of her peers.
SETTING: An academy for supernaturals
CHARACTER: Eden, our protagonist, is a humble teen who's reserved and guarded nature was purposely ingrained into her by her Aunt to protect her secrets. Now how can you go wrong with a character like that? You can't I say!
CONFLICT:So without giving to much away I'll just say forbidden magic is center of the conflict in Marked! Unless you wanna know about Creed & Ethan the two hunks that's battling for Eden's attention, but nah...you wouldn't wanna hear about that🤨
SYMBOL: Oh well, without ruining it for you I'll say there is a prophecy and in that prophecy it's prophesied a Vampire will kick some booties!
POV: Throught the book multiple characters share their POV. It's tastefully done and thankfully it's in regards to our protagonist. You won't be time traveling to a distant land listening to Ahaba Sheik speak about the infidels he considers our protagonists are. That crap gets annoying unless the author REALLY knows what they're doing!
So you see, Marked is textbook perfect. Why do I keep saying that?? Because I enjoyed this so damn much that I didn't want to sound like a fanboy claiming perfection. duh!! Too many times I've read the whole "I can't live without this book" review, and frankly...I won't be one of those. So...I found a way to logically call it perfect😁 yay me
I'm moving on to book 2 just as soon as I get off work. I hope you decide to read Sloane Murphy's Marked. It was a fun YA novel to read!
Marked is an Academy based urban fantasy. It has echos of Harry Potter with the main protagonist Eden being an orphaned child with magical abilities. The Black Water Academy has a similar feel to it as Hogwarts and there is a sorting ceremony where students are placed in houses but thats where the similarities end.
There was a jump at the being of the book between Eden collecting her belongings and starting at Black Water Academy. Chapters 2 and 3 are marked 'Then' and 'Now' but I still had to go back over chapter 2 to see if I had missed something.
The remainder of the book is a cozy, comfortable, easy read that draws you into a false sense of security like the walls of Black Water academy itself. But not everything is as safe and secure as the reader thinks to begin with. Eden is harbouring a dark secret which leaves you guessing as to what this is. Clues are woven into the story which allow for speculation. The story centres around building up the four creatures (Vampires, Shape Shifters, Fae and mer people) and the Academy whilst also giving us vital background information on them. Recent history has been blighted by what is known as the uprising and has a feel of genocidal cleansing against the vampires in a bid for power from the other creatures. Those who were most at risk from the actions of the uprising are of the original vampire bloodline.
As Eden turns 18 and becomes a fully fledged vampire the story starts to pick up pace. Her powers teater beyond control and I found myself questioning again just who or what Eden really is. It seems the old battles of the uprising are being ignited once again and Eden will be forced to play a role in them and a society she doesn't feel part of. The ending of Marked hits you like a blood lusting vampire captivating your mind and making you hunger for more.

Reviewed on behalf of 3 Degrees of Fiction Blog This book is the first book in a new series set in a supernatural boarding school environment by Sloane Murphy. As such it can’t be read as a standalone, since the plot is not finished at the end of the book. This book is mostly used to set up the world. We get to know different characters, learn about how the world and the school system works and what different kinds of supernatural creatures exist. It is the setup book and as such it was interesting, but in my opinion not a lot was happening. We got to know a few characters who will probably be important in the future. First and foremost there was Eden, the female protagonist. She arrived at the Academy as an orphan and with seemingly not enough information about the supernatural society as such. Of course she had special powers that sorted her in the house with the fewest members who are all kinda important. She had to train a lot with her buddies who did not like each other, but liked her a lot. Unfortunately she did not really develop during the first book. She always stumbled upon things that some people would have questioned, some would have demanded answers and others would have tried to find out more about herself and her powers, but she did nothing. She accepted things too easily in my opinion, which made her character a bit flat. The other characters were similar to her in their acceptance of their fates. None of them really questioned anything. They all just accepted it and went with it, while the world around them began to crumble. All in all this book was a typical start to a series. It was a little bit too slow and too much telling for me to really get into the book, but it was a nice and easy read and a promising start to a new series. 3.5 stars

Marked is book one is Sloane Murphy’s Black Water Academy.
Eden DeMontford has lost everyone she loves, she has a secret that she can’t share or tell anyone about, as it can be dangerous for her and anyone that knows. Eden is a seventeen year old girl that is now having attend the Black Water Academy a school for Supernatural beings, where they learn to hone theirs powers and abilities up until they are 21 years old. But keeping her secret is more at a risk now more then ever. She was told to stay invisible and not bring attention to her but that isn’t going to be easy.
There is somewhat of a triangle between Eden, Creed and Ethan. As they become close, secrets and betrayals will be revealed.
I love Paranormal books and this was just superb, I was hooked from the beginning right up the end. I love all the characters although I was a little disappointed with a certain Lion. Kane, Cam, Ruby are fantastic characters to help with the suspense and drama that is unfolding. I love Creed, he is the bad boy and I have a thing for the bad boy and he is it. From the first time he meets Eden there is this instant connection and he wants to be with her and protect her. I’m rooting for you Creed.
I can’t wait to read the second book and find out what is in store for Eden and the gang, she is going to have a rough time now with a few people knowing what she has tried to keep secret. Pre-warning this book does end on a cliffhanger so make sure you have Chosen reading to read right afterwards.
Eden is a 17 year old girl with no family to speak of, but has certain special peeress. It's this uniqueness that lands her in the Black Water Academy, so they can help her figure those powers, as it's a school for that kind of stuff. Unfortunately, she's got some secrets that are doing her no favors, because secrets don't make friends, and I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. She makes friends with Creed & Ethan, who are helping her with her powers, and you already know there are other things going on. That means there are f-bomb worthy twists around every corner. Normally, I don't read a lot of YA paranormal, but I'm super glad that I took a chance on Marked, because seriously, I was hooked from the beginning. I guess the biggest thing was that it didn't feel too young, and I don't mean that it was too old either, but it was just right. I know that doesn't make sense, but in my head, it makes perfect sense to me. However, it did end on a cliffy, so now I'm dying inside a little bit, and need the next book now! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
What an fantastic start to this new series. I am fairly new to Sloane Murphy's wrting but I can see myself becoming quite a fan if this is her style of writing. Once I started I was completely enthralled and didn't want to put the book down until I had finished it.
This is the first book in this new Paranormal Academy series. With all the interesting different kinds of paranormals, the interesting and intriguing characters and the suspense that runs along this is one addictive and gripping story.
Eden is a 17 year old Orphan that is now attending Black Water Academy. She's a vampire and at the academy to learn her vampire powers and to how to control them. She's hiding some serious secrets and having to navigate around with who she can trust or not.
All the characters in this instalment are interesting and seriously peek my curiosity. Eden ends up being stuck in a sort of love triangle with two older vampires that have been assigned as her buddy to help her navigate the awakening of her powers at 18. I honestly can't decide who I am rooting for between them as Ethan and Creed are completely different.
I am honestly excited for the next book in this series as some secrets have been revealed and so many new questions raised. This will definitely be an addictive series
ARC received in exchange of an honest review from the Author and Bare Naked Words
A fairly typical YA PNR novel, following quite a formulaic recipe: an orphaned teen super-heroine with no support system whatsoever, who is introduced to her supernatural powers on her 18th birthday. Two ambiguous love interests? Checked. Heroine saving the day only to get into deep trouble? Checked. Extra points for unexpected allies. I have to give the author credit for some world building - the supernatural species, the backstory, but I would have liked to see more of that - the limitations of the first person didn’t allow that and it’s a shame. The entire book is a single POV and, out of the blue, you get another in the last chapter. I think the story has potential, but it just wasn’t exploited, and some of the elements just screamed cliche. I didn’t particularly relate to any of the characters and though the heroine offers the premises of a brilliant character, she is underdeveloped. All in all, I think it is a nice book for younger audiences and all the points I mentioned above as less than stellar can be easily fixed in the next-in-series.
Marked Black Water Academy Book 1 is just completely badass!!! I truly loved this story.
You follow Eden a 17 year old vampire who’s lost everything, but is still trying to do this thing called life. She has quite the amazing journey to be told and I enjoyed reading all about it!
The Black Water Academy is a school for the supernatural. The students attend for 4 years once they turn 17. You learn your skills to hone all that is your powers and you’ll learn them to the best of your abilities. Eden knows she’s different from her peers. She doesn’t realize how different though.
When she hits her 18th birthday her peers Creed and Ethan help her try to find her way since new powers are unlocked.
There are many twist, turns, and obstacles in this story and when I tell you that you’ll enjoy every bit of it, I am not kidding! Sloane has done a phenomenal job with this book and I can’t wait to see what the next addition to this series will bring! Job well done!
4.4 stars Eden is different. She loses her family as a young girl and all of a sudden has magical powers when she turns eighteen and no one to tell her what is going on. Prior to her eighteenth birthday, she enters Black Water Academy surrounded by other “special” children. All Eden has ever been told is to not trust others and keep to herself but that is becoming more challenging when she is assigned two upperclassmen to help guide her powers and an upbeat classmate who lives next door. However, when strange things start happening and some students are murdered, can Eden keep who she is under wraps and if not, how much will it cost her? If you like Harry Potter then this is one book you want to add to your collection. It is engaging with twists and turns that leave the reader wanting the next book to see the continuation of Eden’s journey. I volunteered to read an advance copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt as though Eden developed nicely. It was nice to go along her journey of self discovery and wondering who she could trust. Creed was an interesting character and I liked how his personality played off Eden's. I would like to have discovered more about him during the story; but I did like how the last chapter was from his POV. It gave us great insight into him. I hope this continues in the next book. Kane was also a nice supporting character.
As for the world. I liked the world building. I thought that is was somewhat like all academy style books; but, I don't think that is a bad thing. I quite like seeing how different authors deal with the "same" worlds. I did find the houses closely resembled those from Harry Potter but I don't think it detracted from my overall enjoyment of the novel.
I really enjoyed this story and I am patiently waiting for the next one.
The premise of this book is simple. "Ordinary" girl who has a dark secret in her past, goes to a school with others like her. Only she is better somehow. Faster, and stronger, and just naturally seems to be the center of attention despite claiming she just wants to blend in to the background. She is the center of two boys who are both trying to earn her affections. And the school for supernaturals has all children divided into houses based on arbitrary traits which, from what I could read, are not even reflected in the individual characters all that well.
I don't think it's the worst thing I've read, I just think it is overwhelmingly similar to the things I've read in the genre, and not even the most well-written of them. I feel like, where the story left off in the end here, the remainder of the plot could be good and get stronger, but this one book is not enough to convince me to read on.
So every book i have ever read by Sloane Murphy I have loved and this book is no different and i was not disappointed!!! After losing someone close to her Eden is alone and about to start attending Black Water Academy. All we know is that Eden is a vampire, but as she reaches her birthday her powers begin to emerge and it leaves you wondering who Eden really is. This book completewly drew me in to the point where i just couldnt put it down. I love all the characters, they all have their own stories to tell and ye are slowly learning about them all. OMG.....Creed he is defintely my favorite chsaracter in this book. This book is just so well written and flows beautifully. I didnt want it to end and i cant wait to read what happens next. This book is definitely worth the 5 stars i have given it!
5 stars! This was a great introduction to this series! To all kinds of supernatural in one place with a mystery to solve but hide at the same time. Eden must hide her true self but will she be able to at the Academy? She's never let anyone in because she fears for their safety if she does. Can she trust anyone at the Academy or will they learn what she's hiding? I feel for Eden and what she must do. She is a great character, she's strong and smart. Her co-characters seem fascinating in their own right. Sloan did a great job keeping me interested and the story moves along nicely. To can feel the emotions emanating from the pages. This is definitely a must read for supernatural fans, you get a bit of each supernatural out there and what they can or can't do. Can't wait for the next installment. ***ARC provided in return for honest review, read for Sweet and Spicy Reads***
This new series by this author had me hooked from the first page and hasn’t let me go. It’s set at Black Water Academy and its a school for everything Paranormal. It centres on Eden a vampire who has to hide what she is as she cant risk her secrets getting out. Her journey sees her having to trust people around her, something she isn’t used to doing. With the help of Kane, Creed, Ethan ,Ruby and Laney we start to find out answers to our questions. This book is oh so good. It kept me hanging on the whole way through and I was devouring the words. Packed full of mystery and intrigue we find all is not what it seems and Eden isn’t who we expect either, she is so so much more. I loved this story and its characters and I cant wait to read book 2 as I need to see what becomes of the love triangle that had started just before everything went pair shaped.
Nnnnoooo, it can't end like that!!!! I need more ASAP!!!!!!!!
Sloane is back and her writing is powerful. I love reading her books because it brings me out of my normal reading bubble. Her words draw a reader in and allow for them to get lost in them. Sloane is very detailed with her words and the characters are amazing. You'll love some and hate other's or you could love them all.
Black Water Academy is a new series that will have you hooked. I know I was. I finished it in one day. You'll meet all kinds of supernatural creatures and they will keep you on your toes. Eden is the main character and her secret is so powerful that it could end her.
