Without any doubt the best small town mystery I have read in years! The sense of snark and in house jokes add a lovely sense of humour. An excellent story line coupled by vibrant characters make for a read that is difficult to put down. More please!!
I recieved this book for free from amazon and this is my honest opinion
I actually liked this story. I liked the silly donut names. Amazing how in this book the entire town goes to the donut shop. I don’t understand the shadows and it took among time to get to the murder. But I really did like the story overall.
Maybe it's because I read the first book in this series more than two years ago, but this book felt a bit flat to me. While I didn't expect a recap of the first book, a re-introduction to the major recurring characters would have been appreciated. It took several chapters to figure out who they were and how they're all connected, which was a distraction from the story itself and cost the book a star in my rating.
That said, I like Karen, the MC. She's an ex-con who has recently completed her time in prison and is determined to make a go of her new business. She is wary of those who seem a little off or shady, but is quick to help others who don't have the support that she has from her friends and community. Some of her friends wore me out, especially the one who talks incessantly, but they're there for Karen when she needs help, as is the local sheriff and his officers.
The mystery in the book was good and kept me guessing. The shadows Karen saw off and on throughout the story added to the tension, as did her dreams/nightmares. I didn't figure out who was responsible for what was going on until just before it was revealed in the book, and even though the motive was sad, it made sense.
I have the next book from this series in my Kindle library, so I'll read it eventually, I'm just not sure how soon.
This was the first book in the series I’ve read. It was a bit like reading a book and not knowing the ages, looks or anything at all about the characters, their associations with each other and trying to figure it out as I read. So it deserves less than 4, but it’s not as bad as a 3 star review. The humour is good, i felt the plot was lost amongst all the other happenings, it almost seemed secondary, far too much going on. As far as the donut shop and all the people working and caring etc for each other, well it’s totally unbelievable.
Four stars because although I enjoyed the story and most of the characters were well developed, the author insists on letting anyone and everyone to cook and/or serve food in a commercial food establishment. Unless South Carolina is the food poisoning capital of the country, which I doubt, the writer did not do enough research on food safety.
This second book in a delightful series does not disappoint. The story is richly populated by engaging characters who add warmth and humor. The Donut Lady, a convicted felon who has served her time, is up to any challenge, including thwarting a killer intent on making her his next victim. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
This book just wanted to make me laugh and cry. For someone that came out of prison and went straight to cooking donuts and helping each other is literally an angel. Now mix in solving murders and you have a saint.
I enjoy reading about donut lady and her life. She sounds like someone I would like to know. I like that she includes Mia and Colonel in every part of her life. I also enjoy the fact it is a clean read.
This book was pretty good, but seemed a little scattered to me. I would like to read another book in this series just to see if it would help me make the connections. The characters are likable and the editing is decent.
This is the second book in the series and this story was as good as the first. The characters were likable and interesting and makes you want to keep reading. Looking forward to t he next book.
Many characters from book 1 and some new ones. Add in the donut lady's house being damaged by a storm and a real estate scam. I would love to try some of the unique donuts.
A small town populated by those people everyone would like as neighbors. Sweet, fun, and quick read for pure enjoyment purposes and likely to cause hunger with the donut varieties!
