Ali Parker is a full-time contemporary and new adult romance writer with more than a hundred and twenty books behind her. She loves coffee, watching a great movie, and hanging out with her hubs. By hanging out, she means making out. The man is hot. Hello. She’s a creative at heart and loves coming up with more ideas than any one person should be allowed to access. She lives in Tennessee with her hubs, teenage son, two grown daughters, and two love-of-her-life grandbabies! Telling a good story that revives hope, reminds us of love, and gives a vacation from life is all she’s up to.
This book tried to fit too many tropes in it without actually going anywhere substantial. Within the first few pages, the story sets up a billionaire, firefighter, best friend's little sister taboo romance. A few chapters later there's the added virgin saving it for someone special and I was rolling my eyes. There were a stack of cliches thrown in, quite a bit of repetition a plot that was drawn out and went pretty much nowhere. I obviously missed the bit in the description that said this book ends of a cliffhanger, so if you avoid trilogies, you've been warned.
Ben had been continuing his father's legacy, running his billion-dollar company after his dad and his step-mother died in a plane crash. He's incredibly rich and has women everywhere but sells the company to his uncle to go back home to Portland and chase his dream of being a firefighter. After catching up with his best friend, Jerrod, he runs into Mila, Jerrod's little sister. She's now a looker and he's instantly attracted. Mila's had a crush on Ben since she was young and is still pining after him.
*Slight spoilers below* I had quite a few problems with the book. Firstly, apart from a stack of repetition where they swoon for each other, there's only a few steamy kisses a couple of times and that's it. There's a slight twist chucked in when the uncle dies (again by a plane crash - what are the chances...) and there's a possible nefarious motive threatening Ben's company as a result. There was a heap of 'he/she's really hot and I want to be with them but it's a big no-no with the brother so we can never be'. Wash, rinse and repeat because this was brought up throughout the whole book, unnecessarily I might add.
While there weren't any obvious grammatical issues, I found the writing very stilted with a lot of random details thrown in. If the characters were thinking it or doing it, the author included it which meant there was a whole lot of nothing in the book and it made Ben and Mila come across as a bit juvenile. There was also the constant harping on about how firefighters and nurses (Mila was the latter) risk their lives and do it for the good of the community, but how fulfilling their job is even though it's so difficult to be such heroes. It was laid on really thick and brought up a lot to the point where there was more eye rolling from me. Righto, superheroes, you're both amazing, selfless people. We get it. But just in case you didn't, the author jammed in a lot about how they're just ordinary people that save lives. Well, thank goodness we cleared that superhero complex right up.
Lines from Mila included rubbish like 'A thrill went through me to think that Ben and I had so much in common. But I suppressed it almost immediately. Just because we thought alike didn't mean we were soul mates'. Yep. Mila then says she was being a silly girl with a crush and that pretty much summed it up. Ben wanted to do something good for humanity as all the women and money just weren't cutting it. Tough gig. There was also a bit of possible falling in love within the first section of the book. And it would be remiss of me to not mention when Mila makes a pun about playing with fire and Ben laughs at her joke and thinks about how her wit surprises him. That's condescending, Ben. Maybe she's surprised that you even got her reference. Die in a fire.
The book was pretty much made up of Ben returning, he and Mila having a couple of casual dates under the premise of catch-ups, Ben starting his firefighting career and Mila working in the ER. Seriously, that was about it. There was some gratuitous other woman drama thrown in that also went nowhere and, quite frankly, was ridiculous. On his first call out, Ben is called back by a supervisor to share his opinion. Three others run in and the house collapses and his workmates are injured. Ben was freaked out and his workmates were already close to him like brothers (eye roll - this was just over a third of the way in). Why am I bring this up? Because the author did for CHAPTERS. Sheesh. Ben gets a call back to New York, Mila gets upset because he doesn't say goodbye (because he's gutless). They lament over the relationship that never actually was anyway. Throw in an anti-climatic cliffhanger. The end.
I wasn't invested in Ben and Mila's story. Neither of them managed to endear themselves to me as characters, both were walking cliches and nothing in the plot drew me in. I ended up having to skim the book after about half way for my own sanity. Needless to say, I won't be continuing with the series. Oh, and the cover model for Mila is blonde - she's a brunette in the story. This always drives me up the wall.
I loved this story. It is the kind that you can identify with the characters and immerse yourself in the story. Very well written and characters to win the heart make this book a must read.
"I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book."
I have loved Ali & Weston Parker's books and it amazes me that with each storyline & plot with every new book seems better than the last! I think most readers will agree an almost 500 page romance seems like alot probably too much but once I began reading this one I was thinking it should even be longer! Yes I was shocked myself, but this book will suck you in & you won't want this hang on to the edge of your seat, suspenseful read! It starts out with hot & sexy firemen so it's got to be awesome, but when tragedy strikes a 2nd time and it seems a bit too familiar the twists-n-turns in this storyline begins....... Ben had moved to New York City several years ago after he inherited 1/2 of his dad's company when his dad & stepmom died unexpectedly in a plane crash. Recently Ben decided to move back to his hometown and was trying to get accustomed to his new job as a fireman. Mila, his best friend's younger sister, who's a ICU nurse helps Ben work through some things he sees and feels as a fireman. As it happens, Ben also now sees Mila all grown up which doesn't make Ben's childhood friend too happy. It seems like this one is your typically BFF'S younger sister romance, but that assumption would be oh so wrong because what unfolds is a full length read & a plot filled with lots of drama & suspense, some love, angst & lust, a side serving of the mafia & kidnapping, a bit of romance, and heck yes, steam! This book packs a punch as only the Parker clan can write; Billion Dollar Man is not a book you want missing from your Kindle library so I definitely recommend one-clicking this hot & sexy read by Ali Parker, Billion Dollar Man! I am voluntarily leaving this voluntary review, but for full disclosure I did receive an review copy, ARC, of this book but loved this book so much I also purchased it myself too!
What a wonderful Best Friend's Little Sister Romance! First, Ali Parker did an outstanding job developing the characters in this book, and then she pulls you into their story, so that you feel like you are right there with them. This book has love, romance, steamy hotness, family, best friends, suspense, and the mafia all intertwined together into a very well written story that you do not want to put down. It is a very lengthy book, but is so good, that you just want to keep reading. I very highly recommend it.
This is a story about a man who wanted to be a fireman and fight fire. But he has little choice when his father dies and he has to take over and run the business . He sells out to his Uncle and moves back to where he was to become the fireman he wanted to be and is now attracted to his best friend little sister and then things start to spiral out of control and he has to go back to New York. Will he stay or go back to where he calls home
I loved Billion Dollar Man!! I just loved Ben and Mila!! They are such a amazing couple!! When she was little all he saw her as was his best friend little sister!! But when he came back to town he fell in love with her. the had a rocky road but in the end they got there happy ending!! I would recommend this book to anyone!!
This was an enjoyable read for about 48 chapters, the last 20 dragged a bit. I loved the characters but there was so much going on in the storyline and some repetition that my mind started to wonder a bit - yes, I wondered when it would get done with the nitty gritty details and wrap this baby up.
I really did like the storyline, but the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars was because of the length of the book. Too much repeating the same things and it made the book way too long. Glad Ben finally woke up to what he wanted and there was a hea! I don't think I could've taken him changing his mind again!!!!
He was pulled from his home to carry on his father's business after his death. He spent seven years there before finally admitting it wasn't for him. He returned home to pursue his dream as a firefighter. What he wasn't expecting is to see how beautiful his best friend's sister had become & he sure as he'll didn't expect to fall for her.
This one is a little slow. I would prefer a book with more action and less repetitious "thinking" from the main characters. Also some things were not at all believable --i.e., the mafia storyline.
The book was well written but way to long. The back and forth with Ben was kinda annoying. Also, there was recaps of what has already happened in some of yhe chapters. It was almost like it was 2 books turned into 1.
This is book one in the series. It's was a brief look in to what could or should happen. There is more ground to cover. I'm excited to read the next book and continue Ben and Mila's story.
I really enjoyed the way that a lie created the characters and the emotions they go through of trying to explain their feelings and examine their feelings to just incredible
I liked this book a lot. Both h and h were likable. One supporting character was a dick and at points I couldn't take the back and forth but happy ending all around.
Great book. Lots of suspense. Fantastic connection between characters. Must read for anyone who loves a great love story and hoping for happy ever after.
I love Ben, he's the brothers best friend and the hottest thing in Portland. Mila is a grow woman chasing & hoping to date the man she's loved forever....
This novel was a fairly lengthy read that told of romance mixed with drama and suspense. The story flowed well and was well written. The story was a bit wordy in parts but this did not detract from the overall telling of this tale. The characterizations of the main male and female characters, as well as the rest of the cast of characters in the story, were well developed and believable. Even though the main male character lived through some exceedingly trying times, his life choices were sometimes questionable. He seemed to be wishy-washy in some of his life choice decision-making. This character trait resolved itself over the course of the story but unfortunately not before the main male character had caused unnecessary pain and suffering to people close to him. The main female character was an independent, strong, capable, empathetic young woman. She had one weakness, the main male character, who through her deep love and compassion kept forgiving him for hurting her. To say these two had a troubled and difficult romantic relationship is to put it mildly. They even had very harrowing circumstances to overcome as well. With the support of close friends and having very loving and understanding family, these two weathered their battles. In the end, this couple did attain their happy ever after.
I voluntarily received an advance reader copy of this novel and I am leaving an honest and unbiased review. I have no affiliation to the author.
A bountiful tale of two adults stuck at the crossroads of their lives. Ben and Mila, lust and insta love cause the two who have known each other since they were children to become stuck in a 'Ground Hog Day' cycle, as they battle with their guilty consciences, and the immense amount of feelings thrown at them at once. " Bro Code" broken, sisterly secrets, dangerous ties, heat's rising and hearts broken while fights are breaking out everywhere! Is it all too much? GAH! Oh, that Ali Parker... I do believe she tried to kill me slowly! My frustration levels throughout this romance hit some shall we say.. interesting degrees. Ben, Mila, Jerrod, and even Skylar, they've got a crap ton to work out-- and.. well, let's just say if they had been real people I knew in person.. I may have walked away from that crazy train on it's way to derailment! Phew! After all, is read and done this one heart pounding, sensually and maddening driven love story of forgiveness, friends, and what happens when you let the past go, and focus on what is right in front of you. Creatively written, with details galore, well worth the rise in my blood pressure!
I 'discovered' Ali Parker's books last year and have been addicted to them ever since. I love the way she weaves a story. The way she develops her characters that are so believable and 3-dimensional. The way they pull at your heart strings and I always end up liking them [well apart from the obvious unpleasant ones ]. In this book I loved Mila as the heroine. The hero was Ben, who is her brother's best friend so obviously their love would break the 'bro code'. She had a crush on him as a child but nothing happened. He always wanted to be a firefighter but work in New York pulled him away. When his parents and 'uncle' die in suspicious circumstances he gets a chance to come back home and they reconnect. Passions overtake them but then he feels that he 'has to' leave town to protect her. Ben did annoy me at times because he need to be more assertive and not floundering in his thoughts. This is a longer story than normal but it was so full of what was going on that it didn't seem long at all to me. This is a real page turner and you won't want to put it down. W|ell worth purchasing so that I can re-read it whenever I want to do! Most definitely recommended!
5.0 out of 5 starsWhat a story read it and you find out why i recommend it Bysharon rapsonon 22 August 2018 Format: Kindle Edition This book was awesome Ali Parker has written yet another fantastic book that you will truly adore. Ben has always wanted to be a firefighter but thing have not always gone to plan. After inheriting his father's company which he is finding it hard being stuck in a office he leaves New York and heads back to his hometown of Portland. Mila hasn't seen Ben in 7 yrs ever since he left following his father's dead. Ben and Jarrod have been friends for many years they are like brothers but will the friendship survive when jarrod finds out his best friends secret. With lots of emotional backs and forths and a love that is meant to be will Ben finally find his place and will it be true happiness. I highly recommend this book the story held my attention from start to end
I loved this book and it drove me absolutely batty at the same time. For a bunch of fully grown adults, they sure do behave like tweenagers a lot of the time. I loved watching the complex web of friendship and family ties between the Atwood and Castle families. Those made it possible to create more drama than the most critically acclaimed reality TV series. Ben and Mila have known each other for most of their lives. She’s his best friend’s little sister, so there’s lots of unrealized feelings roiling just under the surface. Add in the secret his father kept from everyone, and suspense and danger get added to the mix. What that means is that Ben and Mila’s story is an angst-y, emotional read that’s as much mystery thriller as it is romance. I hope we can see their best friends get books of their own in the future. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.
What to sayabout this book...amazing! They way that you brought all the characters together was brilliant. Mila and Ben are what I'd like to call that forbidden love. They find they're attraction is pure and full of love but when you families have been friends for 25 years it tends to cause a few problems. After Ben inherited his father's half of the the couple he realizes that it not for him so his uncle buys him out until he's killed to. Also finding out that his father was a bad guy, mixed up with the Mafia things definitely had to change. Mila is this carefree nurse and amazing woman who is just coming to realize that she's wants what ever girl wants...love. Ben and her go through some serious ups and downs but they make it work in the endd. This is a must read. I give it 5 stars. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book as an Advanced Reader's Copy.
BEYOND BOUNDS!!! Say what? Yeah, so much for not being able to date his best friends sister. Man, broken bro code. Ali kicks it up and stages one fantastic adventure with all the excitement and drama you can't help but follow. The two main characters have a chemistry that's off the charts and challenges both. With all the suspense and danger along with family issues this relationship is doomed from the start. Not so with Ali. She totally nails this on point tale and raises the stakes as well. The characters are well developed and intriguing. The scenes are so graphically detailed it comes alive before your eyes. Ali keeps the suspense high as she leads our strong characters to their destination. Remarkable job Ali, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.
Ben is finally back in Portland after six miserable years as CEO of his late father's company. He can finally get his life back, become a firefighter, and spend time with his best friend Jarrod and the rest of the Castle family. That includes Mila, Jarrod’s baby sister, except when he sees her she is all grown up and beautiful. Mila has crushed on Ben her entire life and he seems pretty interested in her now until he remembers the rules – you don’t mess around with your friend's little sister.
This is a nice afternoon read but it's only half a story and ends in a cliffhanger that leaves loose ends all over the place. It was very disappointing. More of a prequel than a series start.
Billion Dollar Man is the friends to lovers story between Ben and his bff’s younger sister, Mila. It’s a bit on the lengthy side but the flow was steady. It had elements of suspense, indecision, drama and love. I was torn in my opinion of the m/c’s. Ben was too indecisive considering he knew what he wanted and didn’t want. He wasn’t the dominant alpha that I was expecting but still maintained the “upper” hand when it came down to brass tax. Mila is smart and strong willed but we see her weakness play out when it comes to making moves. An overall dreamy read. I received this book for a voluntary, completely honest and non incentivized review.
