Between3-4 stars, but not really enough to round up. 3+ I liked it, but not really enough to bump it up to really liked it.
The Kindle edition I read was titled "Hero in my Bed." Cover model was blond and clean-shaven (which is how Preston is described, FYI)
Preston is a great H. Active and hot (of course) and self aware (what job makes him happy? what type of relationship?) and strong enough to stick to his convictions. Not a man-whore or overly alpha (though there are a few moments where he has to push it when dealing with Nina's stubbornness). I loved his banter with his friends too. Good banter in an H is always a plus for me.
Nina wasn't my favorite h, though. She's a "tough girl outcast" sort of character, but she still fell sort of flat for me. Also, while I'm glad that she did try to talk to him as an adult when their relationship started changing, the fact that she tried to cold-shoulder him in the first place and then dropped him so fast afterwards... a little immature for my taste. If I could have expanded anything in the book, it would have been Nina's character development. Yes, she's had a lot of stress in her life, but she was well-loved until her uncle passed, right? So is it THAT out of the realm of possibility that people could want her as a friend (or more, in Preston's case)? Also, if she didn't want people all up in her business, why on earth did she move to a small town???
Pretty basic plot overall. The 'oppostites attract' recipe. Preston's the town golden boy (an oft-repeated description), with a touch of fire & rescue. Nina, while not a "bad girl," is definitely from an opposite upbringing. Pretty straightforward and simple, really - not tons of angst or unique twists on the trope. Not necessarily an author or series that is now lodged at the top of my To-Read list, but it was sweet, fun, and straightforward with some enjoyable characters. It's an enjoyable bit of escapism, and I'd've loved to have it developed a little more (escpecially some of the charactes) - the flip side to being such a quick read, I suppose. As it is, it's a very quick read, though might be a bit fast-paced for some.
Alternating 1st person POV. Most of the OW drama was from Preston's mother, and it wasn't an overwhelmingly major plot issue - no stupid Mean Girl antics or love triangle drama. Just enough for Nina to have some angsty moments and push the plot along. No overwhelming angst or completely immature lack of communication issues (though Nina does push it at one point). As you can see, my most common adjectives here seem to have been "simple," "straightforward," and "fun." So, take that for what it's worth! HEA and no cliffhangers (though a few characters and plot threads introduced for future books in the series).
Would I read more in the series? Definitely yes. I can always use another good "escapism" series of reads on my Kindle.
