I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It's not an 'all about the gore' kind of story. It's more about the building madness in the MC. The author has a very direct way of writing. Every sentence is necessary for the story and nothing more. It kinda reminded me of American Psycho in how cold and impersonal the MC is portrayed and with how the writing style is.
Extreme "walk on the wild side" tension filled book!
How far would you go to win some cash? Would you step out of your normal routine and go to extreme lengths of hurting yourself to be able to lay your hands on some big money?
That is what happens in this book as TV producer Damon Dahmer has a reality show where people come on the show to win cash but the catch is they have to be willing to hurt themselves in horrific ways to earn the money. The contestants play off against each other and the one that is willing to do extra hurt to themselves is usually the one that will win the game.
I really liked the characters in this book as Dahmer is trying to make a go of his show, which in the beginning of the book he just wants the show to bring in some good ratings, but as time goes on he becomes more ruthless and will do anything to keep the show bringing in top ratings.
His secretary/assistant, Mary, is hesitant at first to even see what the people go through to win the cash, but Dahmer seems to rub off on her and she becomes just as involved as her boss on pulling in contestants to the dark world of the show.
How far is Dahmer willing to go on his show to get the ratings he wants? What are the contestants willing to sacrifice to get the cash?
I was very impressed with the writing style of author, Sea Caummiser, as she brought this world together! I was captivated right away by the storyline and was transported into her world quickly.
The story is an extreme horror romp and will take the reader over into the splatter punk realm without causing too much damage to their psych!
I am always willing to "walk on the wild side" and see what lies beyond that threshold of the extreme side of life. There are more books in this series and I will be moving into the second book shortly to continue on with the "extreme games" that lurk in the mind of this author. It really should be a fun ride! Four stars for this one!
I am ready for book two in this story. Each time I thought I had seen the worst of Damon he surprised me with something new. If you enjoy a good dose of shock and gore once in a while this story is a good place to go.
The scariest part of the whole thing is that the premise of the Reality Show is not that far fetched. It seems like something that could very easily become reality.
So Caummisar's work was new to me. This intro to the Deadly Reality Series is just what it claims to be. A gorefest.
The writing and plot in this novella is straightforward. The story clips along quite quickly and efficiently. A guy, Damon, who is a TV producer. He's a psycho, lacks any empathy for humanity, and frankly an ass-hat to boot. You learn early that That has made him essentially said psycho ass-hat and driven only by occupational success. Damon and his assistant Mary get a little bit of character development. There were so many times I wanted to punch Damon's head off.
The story is scary in the premise: in today's world it isn't too difficult to imagine a producer and a network would go that extra step to create a game show where the entire purpose is to watch people hurt themselves for money. It is not difficult to imagine a TV producer as self-centered, self-important and monstrous as Damon, either, truth be told. Mary serves as kind of a nice emotional/moral counterpoint, even though she actually ends up going along with it all. And frankly I'm pretty sure if somehow the game show in the book Easy Money actually became a reality, there'd be an audience for it.
At first I wondered why people wouldn't "game" the rules of hurting themselves (in the "first episode") by for example, making the But as the plot develops (as a new show would too) they formalize instructions that would prevent a person from minimizing damage.
I was impressed by Caummisar's ability to work in a twist at the end. I hadn't really seen that coming after all the plot before that was linear and direct and focused on describing harm to people.
Wow Sea, your mind IS dark! This was an insane premise but at the same time frighteningly believable. How far is too far in the reality TV world? How close to the edge of morality are TV execs willing to go in the name of entertainment? In this book the answer is pretty fucking far. Would definitely recommend, a gory thrill ride!
Got the bind up with the books but will rate each novella separately. Not sure if I'm going to review each book. It was as depraved, gory and disgusting as expected however it made me really think about how much money have over people or at least the need for having means to pay for things in life and the desperation that can come from that
If you desperately needed money, would you go on a reality tv series where you had to hurt yourself in some fashion in order to win some? The challenges get progressively harder but hey, there's medical help for you should you need it and remember, pain only lasts a short time - this money could change your life!
This is one of those where I would absolutely watch a movie but if this were real life... well, could I stomach it? Would I assume it was just theatrics? How true would it be that people would be so engrossed in this horror show that it would absolutely do well with the masses?! Honestly this world is going in an "interesting" direction so it's really hard to say how a show like this would actually perform.
Damon Dahmer (ha with the last name) is one sick son of a bitch and the lengths he goes to in order for this show to succeed is almost a tiny part compared to what he needs to do for his own self satisfaction. While they're largely intertwined, he's quite the sick pup... and quite frankly, I'm here for all of it. I don't know or care what kind of person that makes me but this is the type of read I totally get into.
Absolutely intrigued where this might go in book two: Pain For Gain. Those who love movies like Would You Rather would definitely enjoy this creepy and sadistic novella.
I am old enough to remember when the only "reality show" was the nightly news, and maybe The People's Court, Cops, and a slew of talk shows where people mostly complained about their spouses. These days, there are a ton of naked dating shows, surviving the wilderness, and willingness to marry a stranger for a chance to be on TV. So is it really that far fetched to think there could ever be a show where people willingly injure and maim themselves for cash? Probably not, and the author imagines just such a future where people will do anything for cash while a live audience enjoys their pain. "Easy Money" is the brain child of a twisted sadist who may have once been something close to normal but since the death of his only child and dissolution of his marriage, has embraced his darkest desires to see human suffering up close and personal. This was a quick and gruesome read.
4.5 rounded to 5. This is Sea's first book and it is a doozy. This is the type of book you sit down and fly through. Sea's characters are believable and the story moves at a good clip. I found the thing done best in Easy Money was the squirm factor...Sea has a way of putting you up close and personal with the violence in this book. If you like the run of extreme horror writers that have been blowing up in 2020-21, you will love Sea Caummisar.
Although I liked the concept of this book, I think it lacked in execution, I thought the writing was clunky. It was a very he/said she said book, I don't mind simple writing but this was almost childish. The gory parts of this book lacked any realism because of the writing, no matter how good the narrative is if the writing doesn't work for me it's never going to be more than a three.
What I will say about this book is that it does shine a light on the nature of being human, people really do like violence, especially if they are watching from behind a screen. This is something I could see happening in the future. I didn't enjoy the sexual elements of this book, I know violence and sex always seen to go together, but I don't this it was needed.
I didn't like any of the characters, it's pretty hard to develop characters in such a short book, but these characters were so dull and predicable. I think the character was trying to do something with the main character but he felt one-dimensional. I won't be continuing with this series and I'm not in a rush to pick up anything else from them.
Damon works in reality television and his recent show has had a drop in viewers until someone gets injured. That leads to him and his assistant Mary to come up with a competition show in which people injure themselves for cash prizes. When Damon is determined to get a specific young man named Marty on the show, Mary becomes suspicious about Damon's motives for getting him to compete.
The concept of people putting themselves at risk of injury or death for money isn't new, but as long as there is a system in which some people are put in situations where they're desperate and will do whatever it takes to get "easy" money, stories like this will remain relevant.
Also, this is extreme horror so content warnings are redundant, but there is a lot of gore and torture in this book.
Okay, let me begin by saying I liked the premise of this story. It's not every day an author approaches a "game show" theme and makes it into something almost resembling a plot.
It addresses a very real thing - the amount of stupidity people will go through to earn money. We've seen it in Survivor, Fear Factor and other ludicrous shows.
That being said, I didn't like this read solely for the lack of plot. It was a typical gore fest which isn't something I don't enjoy but I at least want a story.
What scenes there were of Damon I almost wanted to see more of him and less of the show.
There was no character development, no world-building and no plot. Three major things I look for when reviewing.
We get it: Damon is a narcissitic asshole with a complex for violence and blood. But is that the only side of him?
What point of view were we supposed to be seeing things through? Things jumped all over the place so bad, I got confused and couldn't connect to any of the characters.
All of the information dumping in the beginning could've been replaced with more development of the characters. I nearly DNF'd it because of all of the information.
I think this series has potential, don't get me wrong but when reading, there needs to be a plot.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book is different from anything I have ever read
This book is dark, suspenseful. Like the show in the book you couldn't look away. You keep reading because you need to know what's going to happen. You need to know if they will go trough with the contest. It terrified me, yet I loved it.
But some parts I felt as if I was reading a book from a sport commentary person who was telling me step by step every play and the person making the play. That in it self was a little upsetting to me.
Yeah. In the world of Reality TV, it ain’t all the glamour, glitz and long-stemmed roses that you might have imagined. There can also be a seedier side to the industry where the sound stages don’t overwhelm their hard-working contestants with ice sculptures scattered with gimme-size bottles of Cinzano, Grey Goose Vodka or Calvados, all on offer inside of opulent makeup rooms staffed with liveried attendants whose sole intent is to convince the contestants that they are indeed the stars that they have become. At least for a brief moment.
But… Pause for a sound cue. Increase gain a bit, get the boom boy out of the way again, then blend in a mix from the old sound track of the Twilight Zone. The spooky voice of Rod Serling intones: “But… There are other, more low-rent sound stages hosting a rougher sort of Production Company, in a side of the town where the streetlights don’t quite work. And the management there is more likely to greet contestants in the back parking lot and hand them their own personal army surplus Tactical Trauma Kit. And where the friendly staff may be discreetly piling body bags out of sight in the prop room.” Welcome to…”
Okay, he never said anything like that, ever.
Welcome instead to the bizarro world of ‘Deadly Reality TV’ where our heroine, the upstanding Mary has recently gotten a job working for the wonderfully named Damon Dahmer. Damon suffers a few little quirks, such as being a total psychopath with a little touch of bipolar that results in violent mood swings ― so basically just your average abusive spanks-snapping producer in the entertainment business. But it does get worse.
Damon Dahmer has come up with a new high concept Reality TV programming niche that even Johnny Knoxville’s production company didn’t think of, or wouldn’t touch. I don’t wish to alert anyone to an unintended spoiler so I will just describe this high concept as: contestants get into bidding wars to see which lucky person will be allowed to part with an essential appendage or epidermis layer that they originally received chromosomally from their parents and over the years have become very attached to and would certainly never ever wish to be separated from ― except for the offer of very large sums of money.
Originally, when I considered reading this book I saw something referencing the category as ‘horror’, and that gave me pause to self-evaluate if I were really in the mood to get grossed out (when I could just turn on Fox News or CNN and get the same effect). Well, stuff and nonsense, Scarlett. I have survived one of the first mass school shootings, worn khakis drenched other people’s blood , seen beheaded people in Mexico, been stabbed in the right kidney, been shot at, shot back, seen beheaded people in Yugoslavia ― and all that was ‘before’ I even got drafted!
So I’m thinking that I must be tougher than I suspected and there just must surely be a new Goodreads Book Category for “Cozy Horror”. Although I would really call this book more like a medieval German Morality Play where Mary plays Faust and the Devil is Damon Dahmer. Or think: Stephen King put through a strainer. (No, don’t.)
Anyway, I survived all the horror ― and actually found that I liked it!
Because here is the author’s gift. In her book the TV audience is constantly finding themselves squiggling in their seats wondering: “Why am I watching this? There must be something wrong with me.” And then I finally got the joke.
Because I was doing exactly the same thing! But ‘reading’, not watching. The author’s crisp no-nonsense delivery of narrative and knack for seamless nonstop action lulls the senses into believing that, yeah, this could really be happening. Couldn’t it?
A game show like no other. Contestants take part in a reality show where they take part in games that require them to face pain in exchange for a cash prize. The higher the amount the the great the pain. How much pain are they willing to endure? Is their need for money greater than their fear of pain?
This book will have you questioning why do people have such fascination with violence? Is money is worth going through it all?
A scene had me flinching! It reminded me of a scene in a supernatural episode but more gory obviously. The attention to detail wait great! I l love when horror can do that to me since it’s once in a blue moon thing 😂
If you love the Saw movies then this book is for you!
Damon Dahmer, producer of a reality game show involving harmful stunts for cash, craves to introduce extreme pain-inducing acts. To find suitable applicants, he mixes with the dregs of society, who are influenced by the money on offer. As I progressed, I found myself detesting Damon, but was curious as to how the storyline would develop. A fast-flowing and enjoyable read with a vast array of weird characters, I anticipate reading more from this talented author. Not for the squeamish... believe me.
Damon Dahmer is a psychotic satanist oh and he is a entertainment producer who he has come up with a new Reality TV show. It has a simple concept all the contestants have to do is out bid each other and earn the right to injure themselves for very large sums of money.
The author Sea Caummisar has taken an original idea and come up with something spectacular.
This reader found herself feeling queasy at the lengths the contestants would go to win money . I don't think there is any amount money of that will convince me to my harm self.
If you're looking for something new , something different something that will leave you squirming in seat and q really good page turner definitely give this book a try.

Easy Money by Sea Caummisar. Deadly Reality Tv series, book 1. Published March 2019 by Amazon Digital Services. Kindle edition, 116 pages. The author gifted book 1 and 2 in order to beta read book 3. Possible triggers: self inflicted mutilation.
This was a very fun little novella. Super quick read. A “real life” type of horror story, spatterpunk lite. The concept of the reality tv game show like Easy Money seems very plausible and sounds like something we would see on tv any day now. Tv is always pushing that boundary of what can be shown and the bar is constantly being raised. Things are always getting more violent, or bloody. More, More, More. Easy Money is just the right place to go for more blood and gore. Every challenge the contestants have to do is crazier then the last. What would you be willing to do to yourself for 50,000 dollars? The price gets higher and higher. People are always desperate and or greedy. Everyone wants money. Would you shoot yourself with a gun for money? Would you walk on broken glass? Put your hand in boiling water? Beyond the game show, Easy Money turned out have a twisted little revenge plot to it. This was an interesting book and was very entertaining. The ending sets the stage for the next book.
At the heart of this story is the main character Damon Dahmer, the executive producer who created the show. Damon is one twisted individual. As the show gets more and more dangerous, so does Damon. He wants to push his own personal boundary just as far as he wants to push his tv show. While the show might actually draw the line at some point and put an end to the extreme nature of the show, Damon does not seem willing to ever stop his own personal graphic displays of the extreme. How far will he go? Is there any hope left for Damon or is he past the point of saving? I don’t know… I think Damon might be a few fries short of a Happy Meal, and he might never come back from the dark places his mind travels to.
The writing was a little stiff in some spots. It wasn’t terrible. It just felt not as polished in some spots.
Dark and twisted, Easy money was a quick, fun read. Has some graphic, gory injuries that might make you flinch a little. This is for the gore fans out there. It was an interesting concept for a tv show and it made for a very entertaining novella. I look forward to seeing how the story progresses in the next book.
What a romp! Never knew I needed Fear Factor taken up to Saw levels of gory, entertaining fun. It's so ironically good that the story delivers more than shock value. Can't wait to follow Damon Dahmer further down that dark mind of his. But I could NEVER do that last thing for a mere $3000 or love. Listened to the audiobook and the narrator announcing "EASY MONEY!" gets me every time. [3.5 stars]
Want to see how far some people will go to win big cash prizes? Read this book. Heads up, there might be amputation, hot plates, and carving of the skin.
Okay, wow, I wasn't expecting this to be so good. Such an easy story to follow, and every bit of this story was WTF. There was no pause while reading this one for sure!
Well...this was certainly different. I am a big fan of reality tv like Survivor and Amazing Race (NOT those Housewives shows lol) so this seemed like it would be right up my alley.
I do not think, however, I was prepared for how gruesome the reality tv show in this book was. The show asked contestants the question "What would you do to earn easy money?" and in turn, they had to prove what they would do in the form of inflicting pain on themselves.
Game show creator Damon Dahmer may as well be related to Jeffery Dahmer because he is just as sick and twisted as he was. * shudder * We are taken through the creation of the show, the vetting of contestants and the actual show itself. I am cringing reading the pain the contestants are putting themselves through for money. I get weak at the sign of blood IRL so yeah, it was gruesome to read for me.
While the idea of the book is unique, I think it was really rushed. I didn't realize how short it was when I started reading it so when it ended I was like, "huh?" * eye blink *
The character development is weak. I get Damon is a douchebag, has a lost a son and is quite sadistic but there is very little development other than he likes violence.
The series does continue on to another three books. I may jump into the second one because I don't have a sense of closure after finishing this one.
My wife and I listened to this on Spotify together for part of a road trip today. I loved this. It made me laugh so fkin hard. Props to Sea Caummisar for such a creative story with a ton of dark humor. It helped our trip go by so much quicker. Since we listened to another book for the first part of our trip, we didn't finish this during our nine-hour drive. After we got to our destination, we got a quick bite to eat and headed back to our rental condo so we could finish the story. I wasn't disappointed.
I am looking forward to reading more from Sea Caummisar in the future. The narrator's voice was great, but there did seem to be some technical issues with the volume changing unexpectedly. It was difficult to hear him at times, but others seemed quite loud.
This was both a great beginning to what looks to be an interesting extreme horror series and a darkly funny look at the plague that is reality TV. From a sociopath producer to a simpering assistant to some rather desperate and half crazy contestants, Easy Money is a show destined for greatness. It was enjoyably fast paced even in the backstory chapters. Damon is a character you can't help but love to hate, and I can't wait to see where the series goes next.
What an absolutely thrilling read. Don't read if squeamish or easily repulsed. As this book is in your face. When contestants appear on a live reality show they have to be the lowest bidder to win the money. They also have to go completely thru with the dare or they will not win the money. I wish it had been longer. Seems like books are getting shorter and shorter. Sad.
A solid start to darkly interesting series. I'm cheating slightly and writing this while halfway through the second book. No worries either if you are (like me) a reader who must have all books available before diving in, all three are available. I've also heard the third book gets a bit more intense. Here's hoping! I'm sure I'll add more after completing the next two books.
A new tv show is out out and the prize will go to the one who will.do anything to hurt themselves. The worse the device used the larger the prize fund. Who.would do it? Would you? See who will and.just how far they will go
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
