Inked #2

Uncomplicated

Rate this book
Two men with a rocky history, and one with an all-consuming love for both of them.

Sometimes I’m so lonely I swear I can’t breathe. I bring men and women into my bed to chase away the ache, but it never seems to help. I want something real, something lasting, but I’ve never been more afraid of anything in my life. If I have nothing else in my life I can count on, at least I have my best friend, Cas. If I have nothing else in my life that feels solid, at least I have Cas.

Until one sad smile from a beautiful man tilts my world on its axis.

But Finn is Cas’ ex, and that means he’s off limits, right? What if I could have something permanent, if I’m willing to put my heart on the line? Finn and Cas may have a history, but something tells me the three of us could have a future, if we’re willing to let things get a little complicated.

**This is a MMM spin-off of the HEATHENS INK series and there ARE appearances by your favorite Heathens Ink characters. However it CAN be read as a stand alone.

Enjoyment factor: 4

Steam: 5 (some very creative ménage à trois action)

Angst: 3 (early on, we know what the MCs don't: that Cas was Finn's high school boyfriend who rejected Cas in a misguided attempt to protect him; of course when this is revealed, all three MCs suffer)

Plot: 3 (fairly predictable and mostly relationship focused, except for the storyline involving gang members going after Finn, which offers some suspense)

Romance: 4 (VERY sweet!)

Writing: 3 (I like Neuhold's writing style actually, but there were numerous typos and grammatical issues that pulled me out of the story)

Ending: 4 (tentative HEA)

P.S. I desperately want Owen's story!

Fabulous and my favourite in this set of interconnected books so far.

An exceptionally good MMM narrative which perfectly demonstrates how a two can become a three with good communication and a whole lot of feels.

And believe me, there are feels all over in this book.

I've been intrigued by Beau and Cas throughout the Heathens Ink series and now, in this spin-off, we finally get the story.

It's incendiary, Beau and Cas together, Beau and Finn, Finn and Cas, each one brings something to close the circle of love which began when Cas and Finn were just teenagers.

All three together takes the roof off, they are not only hot, but they're all emotionally connected and the sex only strengthens the bonds between these men.

I loved this book.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

KM Neuhold does SUCH a good job with MMM pairings. I never feel like a character is left out or a third wheel. I love that her characters communicate, they figure out what works best for them in their relationship, and they make it work.

This story had a solid plot, a dash of angst, great chemistry between the characters - Finn and Beau, and Cas and Beau, and all 3 of them together, and it was an incredibly enjoyable read. I know that the MMM doesn't fully happen until late in the story, but the progression worked for me as a reader to make sure that all three men were ready to try it.

This didn’t work for me. I disliked Beau immensely and I kept wanting Cas to ditch them both and find someone who cared about him as much as he cared about Beau. The unfairness was too much and just because Beau didn’t touch Finn when he and Cas decided to go exclusive, doesn’t mean he didn’t cheat on him in any other way he could. Pour Cas... but he just took it and ended up apologizing to Beau for keeping them from each other. God...

Cas and Beau have been best friends and roommates with benefits for several years. Both have deep feelings for the other, but they have their reasons for not letting it go any further. Beau has a serious fear of abandonment and can very easily feel lonely. Beau who is a bartender and Cas, who is a police detective, are usually on different work schedules, so Beau fills those times by being a big flirt and bringing different men and sometimes women, home for just hookups. Sometimes, he and Cas even share those hookups.

When Cas has to go away for a month of Reserves duty, Beau brings home Finn, and the two hit it off and spend most of the month that Cas is gone together. Beau ultimately hopes Cas will feel the same way about Finn once they meet. Finn himself, is not without issues. He's an ex-con who was slightly involved with a gang, but that all happened years ago when he was young and unbeknown to either of the guys...Finn was actually once in a relationship with Cas. He really has no idea that Beau's Cas is the same Cas that he had a relationship with. When he went to prison, he cut off all contact with Cas. He returned home to regroup, which is where he met Beau while couch surfing at Owen's, his friend.

Now we fast forward to when Cas returns... do we even need to say that it wasn’t all smooth sailing? They had past issues to clean up, but there were bigger issues than who slept with who...there is a gang that thinks Finn had told the police about their leader...and they were going to see that he paid. Cas is alerted to the gang issue coming back to haunt Finn, he moves him in with him and Beau to keep him safe.

The three guys end up communicating before too long which clears everything up and sets the boundaries, but it takes a bit longer before Finn is fully brought into the fold. When he is, these three are wonderful together. It is clear to see each of them fills a void in the "throuple" that makes them each integral parts of the whole. They take things as they come, deal with them quickly and work to strengthen the relationship.

One thing that I didn't understand, and it was never explained was why Cas sometimes called Beau “Blue.” No matter...I really enjoyed watching this relationship play out.

This is my first read of the Inked series (a spin off the the Heathens Ink series, of which I haven't yet either), so I wasn't familiar with any of the characters going in. I was pleased to discovered that wasn't a hindrance at all.

I wasn't expecting this book too be as emotional and stocked with the sharing of feelings by the characters as it was. It's refreshing to see characters that cry and show emotion and talk about feelings from the get-go. Having said that, the display of feelings by both Finn and Beau in the immediate aftermath of their first hookup was a bit strange for me.

And this wouldn't be a Neuhold book without hot sexy times, and this book is full of them. The chemistry among the three is off the charts.

Darum geht's:

Uncomplicated is the second book in K.M. Neuhold’s Inked series, a spin off of her Heathen’s Ink books. I have not read any of the prior books in either series, but this story stands alone completely and I had absolutely no trouble jumping in here. While some characters from earlier books get mentioned or make small appearances, this story focuses almost exclusively on Cas, Finn, and Beau, and so really it isn’t necessary to know anything about the other folks who pop in briefly.

When I read a menage story, I am looking for distinct characters that are well developed and where I can see clearly how they all fit together as a threesome, rather than just as sets of two. Neuhold really delivers on that here with Cas, Finn, and Beau. We get a great sense of each of these men and what makes them who they are, as well as how they all fit together.

Funny that the first thing I “see” is the lack of tattoos on the cover model when the series is called “inked”. The colors of the brushstroke background kept making me think it was a British book although I know better. Not a fan of the cover and only the fact that I like this author’s Heathen’s Ink series prompted me to read this one.

POV ~> Alternating first-person, between three leads.

A bartender, a felon, and a cop. No, it’s not a bad joke, it’s the latest release by KM Neuhold.
UNCOMPLICATED is anything but. From the first page to the last, there are complications!
Even though Cas, Beau, and Finn are introduced to readers, at various degrees, in the Heathen’s Ink series, not enough is given about any of them prior to this book to make you feel you already know them and their story.
Cas and Beau have been living together for years, both denying the love they feel for one another. They are NOT in an official relationship though they do have an intimate one. While Cas is away for a month-long Reserves training, Beau meets Finn. Being in an open relationship with Cas, Beau brings Finn home and they become very close while Cas is away. When Cas returns, he discovers that Beau’s new beau is Cas’s first love – the one that utterly destroyed him.
All three men have major issues. Commitment phobia stemming from abandonment and cheating pasts as well as having horribly low self-worth. I like the characters and the plot concept but, for some reason, the book did not flow as smoothly for me this time and it felt MUCH longer than it’s less than 250 pages. There were some secondary characters that felt more like gratuitous cameos, not necessarily benefitting the plot.

I really enjoyed the Heathens series, and the first book in this spinoff, Unraveled, so I was looking forward to this one. I do love a good threesome. I was a bit disappointed at first when it had two strikes against it before I hit page 3. The first is purely my own preference, so not taking anything away from the story – it is written in first person, which I find extremely difficult to read. I can do it, but it pulls me out of the story and I find myself trying to change it in my head. The second issue was the over-the-top descriptiveness – feeling heat splash channel walls, let alone feel it through a condom just gave this an unrealistic, almost cartoonish feel to it. But, thankfully, I pushed on, because those issues faded away and the story took over.

Cas and Beau have been besties and roommates with benefits for a few years. Both have deeper feelings for the other, but they have their reasons for holding back. Beau has some serious fear of abandonment issues, gets lonely very easily. He and Cas are usually on opposite work schedules, so Beau fills those voids by being a huge flirt and bringing different men and women home for strictly hookups. Sometimes, he and Cas share the hookups. When Cas is has to go away for a month of Reserves duty, Beau ends up bringing home Finn, and the two hit it off and end up spending most of the month together. Beau ultimately hopes Cas will feel the same way once they meet.

Finn has some issues of his own – he’s a down-on-his-luck kind of guy, an ex-con who was slightly involved in a gang, all of which happened when he was young and in an actual relationship with Cas (though he has no idea Beau’s Cas is the same Cas). When he went to prison, he cut off all contact with Cas. He returned home to regroup, which is where he met Beau while couch surfing at his friend, Owen’s.

Fast forward to Cas’ return and let’s just say that it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were past issues that needed clearing up, but when Cas is alerted to the gang issue coming back to haunt Finn, he moves him in with he and Beau to keep him safe. These guys end up communicating before too long which clears everything up and sets the boundaries, but it takes a bit longer before Finn is fully brought into the fold. When he is, these three are wonderful together. It is clear to see each of them fills a void in the throuple that makes them each integral parts. Rest assured that once any commitments are made, there are no other hookups, etc. They take things as they come, deal with them and work for the good of the relationship. One other thing that niggled was Cas occasionally calling Beau “Blue.” I kept waiting for an explanation of some sorts, but it never came. However, I really enjoyed watching this relationship play out and look forward to the next installment.

UNCOMPLICATED is a bit misleading in the title because this relationship was definitely complicated! Roommates and best friends, Beau and Cas, have a casual and open relationship which is primarily something that Beau pushes. Both guys are pretty much in love with each other though they refuse to admit it and past relationships have left them with some commitment and trust issues. While Cas is out of town for a month, Beau (with Cas's knowledge) meets and begins sleeping with Finn who has been struggling with his loneliness and self-worth ever since he got out of prison several years ago. What no one realizes is that Finn is actually Cas's teenage love and the one who broke Cas's heart and was the source of most of his trust issues. Holy cow, talk about awkward when that finally comes out though the discovery occurs in a funny way.

This isn't a love triangle because these three guys work their way around to a poly relationship, however, there's a lot of feelings, histories, and pain that needs to be addressed. I liked that it was a slower process because it fit the story but I do wish more of the book was on the uplifting side. A large part focuses on Beau confronting his issues and Finn being on the outside while Cas works through his pain over their breakup. These were such emotional parts of the story and I felt so bad for Finn who has to watch Beau and Cas finally admit their feelings and decide to give a closed relationship a try. Making matters worse, Finn is now living with Beau and Cas because he's been targeted by his old gang and Cas is trying to protect Finn. Like I said, complicated!

The last 20% or so of the book is Beau, Cas, and Finn as an actual three person relationship. For me, the amount of time it takes to get to that point doesn't balance well in the overall story. The ratio of sad and heartbroken to happy and fulfilled tilts way too long on sad and heartbroken. I also felt like the external conflict of Finn's past gang is wrapped up so quickly. It just never felt like it got the space it needed to be a necessary plot point. It would be mentioned and talked about like it was a big concern for the characters and then it seemed like it would disappear for a few chapters before popping back up. Overall, this was a good read and I'm glad we got Beau and Cas's story with the addition of Finn. I'm not an angsty reader so that affected my enjoyment of the story but if that's your thing you'll probably really enjoy this one.

Wow, this one was really all over the place. A bit convoluted. Took forever for these guys to get their shit together. I do like the intense feelings they all had for each other but wasn’t the best executed. My favourite was probably Finn. Glad they got their HEA, but I think this is my least favourite Heathens Ink/Inked book so far.

I got irritated with the pacing of the relationship; it was two against one for too long and I never did feel like things were fully equal. The gang thing was kind of a contrived conflict for no discernible purpose. It wasn’t all bad and if you like a lot of sexy times it should work for you. A bit much for me, entertaining and escapist though.

Cas and Beau are roommates with benefits. They are in love with each other but think as long as they don’t ever say it they will be safe from hurt. They aren’t exclusive and have had threesomes before. Beau hates to be alone so when Cas goes away for a month he is miserable.

Finn has spent time in jail and his life pretty much sucks. Beau gets him a job bartending and since Cas is gone Beau invites Finn to his bed. They both know as soon as Cas comes home their time together will be done. When Cas returns problems abound and the three men will just have to uncomplicate the situation if they want to be together.

It seems like I’ve been waiting for Cas and Beau’s story forever. Then Finn gets thrown into the mix and I knew it was going to be epic. I wasn’t disappointed. Each man was uncertain that the relationship would work. But as issues arise they learn that trusting each other is the most important thing (except maybe for ice cream).

This author brings her men to life and it’s such a joy to discover each individual personality. And glimpses of the Heathens Ink crew is most welcome too.

I received an arc of this book.

Aww man, it’s so good being back in the Heathens world. I’ve loved every story so far, and all the guys have taken me on a journey where I’ve felt every emotion going.

I was intrigued by Cas and Beau from meeting them previously, but throwing in Finn blew my mind a little and I couldn’t wait to dive in. I so wanted Cas and Beau to communicate more, they both had a ton of feelings they were walling in, and treat each other so carefully and tentatively, something had to give, and the catalyst here was Finn, who also happens to be Cas’ ex.

What follows is something really beautiful; Beau and Finn hook-up while Cas is away and although it’s supposed to quick and temporary to quell the loneliness of both of these men, it’s ends up being anything but. What happens when Finn returns? You need to read the book and experience this really honest and organic tale of three deserving men finally finding what they deserve.

I just finished my ARC of this book and OMG!!!! Holy smokes!!!! I don't even know where to begin with this review. I've always loved Beau's character and how flirty he was with everybody, but I always sensed his loneliness. Cas was always a cool character. I liked him as soon as he was introduced. As for Finn, well I was interested with what would happen with him when he popped up as a friend of Owen's from prison. I saw the chemistry between Cas and Beau, but adding in Finn just made it so much better. The pain and loneliness they were all feeling gutted me. Beau was so sweet and vulnerable and fragile, yet he was so strong, and so capable of seeing the loneliness in Finn and so full of love to give. Cas was so patient with Beau and willing to settle for parts of him. I loved that even though Cas was hurt by Finn, he still did everything to keep him safe. Finn I loved how he was willing to let Cas and Beau be happy together even though it was hurting him. The chemistry between these three was explosive and the angst was so worth the end result. I loved this book. Can't wait for what comes next

Marie's Tempting Reads ARC Review:

Magnificent, passionate, incredible romance that was profound and showcased what proper communication can do to enhance a relationship and add a new partner into the mix. It was sensual and caring and sexy too.

I am thoroughly enjoying this spin off series. There are so many emotions and feels galore up in this story that made my heart sing and sigh and weep. The characters have fascinated me from the first time they have been introduced and I loved finally getting their story and watching love and the trials that come with it unfold. There is a fabulous amount of heat and pleasure that had me panting and fanning myself. Every turn of the page felt like a new and wonderful sensation that I couldn't get enough of. Watching the delectable threesome fall in love and find something special was pretty amazing. Everything about this book was good and solid and perfect.

Where have I been?????? This author has been sitting on my TBR but after reading this book, I am so heading to the back catalog.

These 3 men are wonderful. I love the dynamic they all share and how easy they all flowed together in dealing with their complicated history. 1 scared of commitment, 1 scared of losing the other, 1 scared he doesn't belong but all 3 learning to trust each other regardless of their past. When the past decides to come back to haunt him, Griffin has to decide if will stay or if he will repeat his past and push away Cas while at the same time proving Beau that he is right and everyone leaves him.

The thing that puts me off of most love triangles is the jealousy. Thankfully not a triangle and no one has to choose but there is plenty of jealousy. I liked how all three of them have problems and the only way they work is when they’re together.

The relationship between Beau and Finn was sweet. You could see how they needed each other and how they were kindred spirits. I liked how there was no sex between them and how faithful Finn was. The relationships weren’t slow or fast but felt genuine. Favourite parts were Finn sleeping beside the bed and how Cas just says no, despite his feelings. Bittersweet three way, I’m glad they got a happy ending.

KM Neuhold has become a favorite of mine this year, so I have been DEVOURING her books. I love this installment into The Heathens Ink Universe, finally giving us the story of the flirty bartender Beau. I love a well-written menage and this was a great one, with Cas and Finn's history and Beau and Cas' current relationship all fitting together to make one amazing relationship. And such hawt times!!!! Oooh, baby!!! There's plenty of drama and romance, even a tear-inducing moment or two. A great read.
