Rate this book
With the eight southern cities joining forces with the demon army to create the new Meraldian Commonwealth, Veight's dream of creating a nation where humans and demons can live in harmony is almost within his grasp. Upon discovering the sword recovered from the battle at Zaria is an heirloom belonging to the viceroy of Krauhen, Veight sets off to return it as both a gesture of goodwill, and as a way of putting Krauhen in his debt. On his arrival, he meets not only Krauhen's viceroy, but also a dangerous foreigner, the imperial princess Eleora. This meeting sparks a chain of events that culminate into one epic battle between the north and south, deciding Meraldia's fate once and for all!

Ember Island Players

Great transitional volume for the Der Werewolf series. In it we see the final resolution of the Senate, the establishment of the Southern Commonwealth, and an increase in scale with the mysterious new empire from the north leaving isolation.

This novel closes many old threads from ther previous trilogy and opens many new ones for a new, oncoming story arc. It genuinely uses plays as a metaphor to recap what has happened, how the public percieved it, and how our protagonist frames his exploits in universe, as part of propaganda.

Really well executed and really makes me want to read more. Props to Hyougetsu for this masterful setup, I loved the plays too, really puts things in perspective and reminds me of the Avatar: The Last Airbender episode "Ember Island Players" but an entire novel of it.

Expanding the setting is the main objective of this volume of Der Werwolf, as Veight sets his sights on a confrontation with his Northern foes after successfully uniting the South under his banner. Unfortunately, a new complication throws a big spanner in his plans after discovering the existence of a more deadlier foe conspiring with him.

I will admit that this volume's pacing felt rather rushed and let me down quite a bit due to that. For starters, the prior volumes have been setting up the Northerners as ruthless, despicable enemies but they are easily dispatched of in a single chapter in this volume.

Instead, the focus this time falls on the new Rolmund foes that are suddenly introduced, with little foreshadowing or setup and for half the volume, they do steal the thunder out of Veight's story.

Of course, this doesn't last long and eventually Veight manages to subdue them with little effort and finally unites the majority of the continent under him, while setting up yet another confrontation with the new Rolmundian foes.

Der Werwolf is still an entertaining read, but this volume definitely feels like a pretty rushed one with all the new characters being introduced and cutting in to the development of the other characters. The major events and turning points of the novel also felt very contrived as rather than relying on Veight's genius, it feels like the antagonists of this volume deliberately set themselves up for failure so that things just conveniently fall in Veight's favour in the end.

The volume also semi-resolves the current arc, while setting up a new arc where Veight now has to deal with a previously unknown foe, separated geographically and looking much more formidable than before. I'll be looking forward to see how he'll deal with them as the stage is being set up to turn in a much more political intrigue kind of fight rather than having Veight's creative open warfare take the spotlight.

After getting the light novel reading itch from Der Werwolf volume 3, it only made sense to continue on with the series! Volume 4 is a slightly stronger story and covers the invasion of Meraldia from a foreign nation, something hinted at in the previous book. I enjoyed this a little more than volume 3 but the last third or so of the book is not as well executed as the rest - . Despite this, the newly introduced characters and technology are interesting and it's nice to see Veight's allies displaying their strengths on the diplomatic and cultural fronts.
