Rating: 4 Stars ★★★★ (Maybe 4.5? Still deciding on a rating!)
Love In Focus is a manga series that follows Mako, a passionate photographer who transfers to a new school after deciding to join her childhood friend Kei, in the photography club!
Volume 2 delves more into the emotional sides of the main characters and focuses more on the romance as we get a little more backstory from Kei! There's also more interesting developments into the relationships between Mako, Kei & Mitsu!
When I read Love In Focus Vol. 1 last year I knew from the very beginning it would be one of my new favorite manga series: the characters are all likeable, the art really brings a lot emotional and metaphorical depth to the story, and explored the beauty and impact art brings which I loved!
However, while I really love this series and while yes there are subtle moments/hints of romance & a love triangle, the story itself really just grew on me and I just loved it! So, I reread Vol. 1 to prepare for Volume 2 after that shocking ending & once I got to the next installment, it felt not underwhelming, but like something was missing here in this volume!
We get more internal dialogue from the 2 guys and their complicated feelings for Mako. I personally really enjoy emotionally-driven stories, but there was something about it in this volume that made it kind of different compared to Vol. 1 (I feel like it was a mix with how the tropes became more obvious, Mako takes kind of a step back from the story development wise until the end & we get a level of depth to Kei that, to me, made me like him a little less in this volume). I think with Kei's backstory taking more of a focus it slowed the story down.
Though this series does continue to be a favorite and I will of course be reading Vol. 3, it would have been a much stronger volume if it was focused more on plot and character progression, because I personally feel like the characters really make this series shine! One of the biggest highlights of this volume in my though was Mako & Mitsuru's dynamic! (1 of a few theories for Vol. 3 is that they'll end up together? <3)
The art as with the previous volume is so nice to look at! From the characters and their subtle expressions to the backgrounds and how they influence the emotional depth and atmosphere of a scene--it continues to beautifully showcase a depth to the series that weaves its way into many different layers of the story. The choice of backgrounds and specific panels that are highlighted with bigger panel space really a beautiful sense of place and emotion unlike any other manga series I've read before!
Nearing the end of the volume we delve more into Mako's complicated emotions and how they impact her as she begins to realize her feelings about Kei & Mitsuru. I personally really enjoy the love triangle in this series because (although there's more obvious layers to these characters that we get to see), the trio as a whole are likeable, nice characters and the slow development of the romance is so fun to follow!
What really stood out to me in this volume too was how metaphorical the writing was and the symbolism of the panels (maybe its just how I interpreted it? But I felt it gave more emotional weight to each of the scenes). There's also a slower and quieter pace to this story that allows for more time to build on these characters in interesting ways!
I'm hoping to see more of those elements develop or carry over into volume 3!
As with the previous volume, this one leaves you wanting to read the next one asap! I'm sad that Volume 3 is the final one so I don't want to pick it up right away, but I'm so excited to see how the story wraps up!
Love In Focus Vol. 2 delves more into the emotional depth of the characters as it follows Mako and the her new life as part of a school's photography club! The wonderful cast of characters, gripping story and impactful art continue to make this such a dynamic series! This is a pretty underrated manga series and I recommend checking it out!
